  • The Para3 is basically a shrunken-down PM2. And so is the disassembly!
    The paper discussed is:
Titov, Andriy. Effect of fullerene containing lubricants on wear resistance of machine components in boundary lubrication. 2004.
Also, note that Spyderco has now changed their warranty policy so that disassembly is A-OK and Red-Loctite is banished. For more information: • Spyderco just fixed th...

I love how much these videos hold their value over time. A guy like me struggling with their first Para 3 scale swap can do a quick RUclips search and find a 3 year old video that answers all his questions. Thanks for making these Nick!

spyderco actually made a statement to say that from now on no more red loctite and that disassembly of the knife does not void the warrant. damage due to disassembly does

I know this is an old video, but I thought I’d add something to maybe give a bit of hope, my new Para 3 arrived on Monday, and I decided to disassemble it today as I’ve been ordering aftermarket parts for it, and instead of red thread locker, I found blue thread locker, which is what he stated in this video was ok. So I’m guessing that Spyderco has had a listen to it’s customers and switched to blue Loctite 😁
Edit: Also, to add, the knife wasn’t difficult at all to disassemble! I mean it took a slight amount of force, but not enough to even remotely threaten the screws of being stripped!

Thanks this gave me the confidence to take my para 3 apart to clean it. I just left the lanyard hole alone and rotated the body to clean inside the scales. I used just a tiny bit of synthetic gun oil on the washers after wiping away some gunk and it's buttery smooth again, quite easy. Thanks!

Is Loctite really necessary? I ask because I used BLUE Loctite recently on two ZT 0452 Carbon Fiber knives and BOTH of them got so tight that I had to send them back to Kai USA for them to remove the pivot screw. I'm not a "brute" or he-man and I doubt I torqued them down that much. I just rarely have any knife's screws slip that much so I question the need to use Loctite in the first place.

Nick Shabazz When I took apart one of my Paramilitary 2's, I ran into the red loctite menace. I didn't have much luck with the hair dryer option, other than an upset wife. What I found that worked was putting a screwdriver into the screw, and after a couple of good hits from a hammer, the screw came right out. Think it was something to do with the vinrations. I don't recommend trying this with any screwdrivers that are precision, Wiha comes to mind, but good ol Craftsmans did the job for my problem. Thank you Nick for this video!

It's such a shame that some of the best companies in the world are incorporating such anti-consumer methods into their manufacturing. However, there's a huge difference between the ones that listen to their customer's needs and walk back these practices and the ones that continue forward regardless. It's effectively choosing profit margins over the customer.

Then that's it, they have just started using red. But don't you agree they shouldn't be doing it as a lot of other knife markers one of which is Benchmade of which I have a lot of respect for. I asked for different pocket clips And also I lost a screw from my Emissary and straight away they sent new ones out for free no questions asked and I live in the UK. "Fantastic"!!!

    • @andrewryan1203
      @andrewryan1203 7 лет назад +2

Blade Lover I can't say I agree with the use of red loctite or the policy of disassembly voids warranty, but from a company prospective they want to cover their ass.
There are many different types of knife carrying people.
      People who take them apart,sharpen,clean,etc.
Spyderco has such a reputation like benchmade that lots of working class people get them and never take them apart. When the knife is used they can just send it back and have a like new resharpened spyderco no questions asked.
So yes it is annoying for us that like to tinker and fondle our knifes but it keeps them just that little bit safer for those who don't.
I use a kit called the ifixit kit and it has from t4 to t12 and the driver has a breaker bar so you can get loads of leverage on a correctly seated screw.
I've never stripped a screw or even skipped in the screw head. If it feels like it's going to skip I use a soldiering iron set to 650f for 15 seconds and it turns any threadlock into liquid.
You take the risk of taking apart a knife you need the tools.
It's annoying but that's what you "pay for" in something like a benchmade it's the no questions asked customer service.

I just want to put it out there that it's actually not legal under the Magnuson Moss warranty acts for disassembly to void the warranty. Spyderco would have to demonstrate why disassembling it damages it and voids the warranty they can't just assert it. The same thing applies to those warranty void if removed stickers as well.

If it really is Loctite™ 271, it will take a bit more than a hair drier to melt it. I suspect it is some other red thread locker. Another interesting feature of Loctite™271 is that the prevailing torque is higher than the breakaway torque.
    This is from www.loctiteproducts.com/tds/T_LKR_RED_tds.pdf
"Loctite® Threadlocker Red 271TM is designed for the permanent locking and sealing of threaded fasteners. The product cures when confined in the absence of air between close fitting metal surfaces. It protects threads from rust and corrosion and prevents loosening from shock and vibration. It is only removable once cured by heating up parts to 500°F (260°C)."
    "Clean-up
Clean adhesive residue immediately with a damp cloth. Cured product can be removed with a combination of soaking in methylene chloride and mechanical abrasion such as a wire brush.
For disassembly, heat parts up to 482°F (250°C) and separate parts while hot."

"Spyderco’s knives are assembled to exacting tolerances by trained technicians, so we discourage end users from disassembling or adjusting our knives. If a knife has been disassembled and reassembled correctly-so as to maintain its proper mechanical function-this warranty remains in full effect. However, if a knife has been disassembled and reassembled in such a way that, in Spyderco’s sole determination, the proper mechanical function of the knife has been compromised, it is no longer covered by warranty."
I have asked them to clarify before I do anything.

    Ive ever disassembled any knives.
But always throw them into ultra sonic washer and blow them dry.
Put a few drop of lube is good to go!!!!!

I honestly don't understand how to get the lanyard tube out without destroying it. No one takes it out on camera.

I suspect it's the legal weed in Colorado that is affecting the construction. Still, a competent knife if one can just leave it alone and not fiddle with it.
    But what fun is that?

So spyderco ruined the knife before you got it, nice. I don't think they are so heavy on the TL as they used to be. I think they have mellowed a little now with regards to disassembling your own knife, that you paid for and own
