After 75 years i'm just looking at knives now. Yep. And its great to have Nick show me around. I figure it might brighten up my post-covid world a bit. Thing is, i always did love small steel, but never quite had the time or money. My appreciation to all you knife vloggers.

For Nick: I used to buy and restore knives. Diassemble and give a vinegar bath. Removes a lot of rust. Use a pair of pliers to squash que-tip heads and use the heads inside of like Spyderco knives. Works very quickly.

That Wiha bit set is awesome. I have one Kershaw knife with their annoying soft torx screw where one is stripped out some, and there like one of the allen keys that opens it without an issue. It really saved me a lot of headaches.

For tougher cleaning jobs, I'll use a facial scrub brush, like one from EcoTools. Very soft bristles, much softer than a soft toothbrush. Also, Citadel Black knife oil works great on knives that you will use for food prep.
Hi Nick, thanks for the enjoyable content and comprehensive/tools page. I’m just getting into this world of EDC and knives (despite being 50) and am finding it’s a good non-computer related hobby. I’m a programmer by trade and live in Redmond, WA, so I’m otherwise inundated with tech. :)

19:00 I am actually perusing your videos because years ago I bought a frog lube kit and being enthusiastic about it promptly coated all of my firearms. then having a new thing as you do... I went at my knives.
I will say that the froglube protected my firearms being in cases and put away for a years without every taking them out and looking at them. I am very impressed by that. the ones i use/carry I switched back to synthetic axle grease for automobiles in a light schmear across the slidy bits.
the some of the knives on the other hand, have become gummed up and lost their handy dandy quick flip action. I need to tear them down,clean them up, and hopefully restore them to their proper functionality.

I use aerosol cans of isopropyl alcohol, with the red to tube forcefully spray gunk out with the alcohol and it works great

Another great pry tool is the orange plastic tool that comes with most Lego sets. Obviously not as durable as titanium, but it wont scratch

Nice video! I also use Wiha screwdrivers and will check out the iFixit handles. There are two things I differ from though: Oil and threadlocker.
I tried all kinds of US made oils (e.g. Bluelube, Froglube, CRK greese, Daiwa reel oil, and nano oil) but I always come back to EKS Solingen Hi-Tech (sic!) oil. EKS produces this oil for surgical instruments but it is rebranded and sold by other companies as well, e.g. Böker. It is relatively cheap and works for lubrication and rust protection, doesn't smell and it is 100% food safe (in my experience most US made lubrication products aren't). I will check out KPL Heavy Lube though, because sometimes I'd like to have something with more viscosity to it.
When it comes to threadlocker I came across Loctite 222 some time ago. It's "low strength" compared to the 242 which is "medium strength" and in my experience it usually does the job just as well in most cases but is even easier to remove.
Last but not least I can recommend Flitz Matte Finish cleaner and Flitz Wax. The cleaner cleans well and has a pleasant citrus smell to it. It works good and seems to be gentle to just about every material you use it on (Benchmade Bluelube Cleanser once removed my Spyderco PITS' blue 'anodization'). The wax is basically your typical high quality car wax. A carnauba/ bee wax mixture, but a liquid. It is insanely economical (a pea sized drop will be plenty for a folding knife blade, a huge bottle costs like 18€) and works just fine. It will prevent fingerprints to a degree and help to keep non stainless free from rust under light use circumstances.

Nick. One way to get good torx bits is just order them direct from Wiha. They have most sizes in bulk packs of 10-30 depending on the size. Once you get below #8 they start getting more expensive Also make sure you use the right size. Too easy to put a 6 in a 7 screw and say it fits and that’s how you ruin either the bit or the screw itself . Good tools last a long time so it’s worth a little more to get them from the beginning. On buying in bulk it might help if you had some friends that wanted some bits also then you could get 20 and divvy them up between all of you

Backdrop:
I have a folding KāBar pocket knife that was presented to me not too long ago. Today, quite literally, I gently unscrewed the 3 tiny clip screws to tighten the body of the knife for better control of the launching of the blade. In all, that piece was unsuccessful for the screw kept turning. Now for the climax, while reapplying the screws, 2 were good to go, but that final 1 just kept turning and turning. I knew then the screw was ruined. Is there a way to retap that tiny opening and replacing the worn screw with one, once I have been able to rethread the opening? Also, is there something I can do to correct the forever turning main body screw? Semper Fi
FrogLube is great for shipping overseas. Especially if you are certain it is going by boat. It WILL arrive rust free.

I use alcohol for most of my cleaning but I will say once I stumbled upon the Benchmande Blue Lube Cleanser, I've found I can't live without it. I've soaked those Gnat nut size IKBS ball bearings in that stuff and just watched the grime and grease float away with zero residue. Works great on watches as well!

If I may be so bold as to offer a recommendation... I was was looking back at an old video on the Benchmade bugout and to you assortment of tool I suggest a feeler gauge. You can pick a set up at an auto parts store for less than $10 bucks. At least for the way you worked on the washers on the bugout.
Also for the rest of the tool nerds out there ifixit has a great set that has two different sized drivers one 4mm and one 1/4. The difference in size would be a great visual identifier vs tape or other markings.
I love IFixIt handles, but their bits---- not so much. Wiha bits in my opinion are better

Appreciate ur videos Nick thank u. One question tho doesn't the rubbing alcohol dull the coating on a blade ie: Spydercos DLC. Does it lighten the color?
Does anyone know a good disassembly pad like Nick shows at the end? There are a lot on Amazon. The one his store links to lacks the features he touts in the video (like no rim on the edges).

I bought a Michael Zieba knive and the detent Bar you can really hear scraping against the blade should I put some nano oil on that or should I just keep flicking it and it will wear down the metal more therefore making it easier to open and close?

Hi Nick. I’ve watched many of your disassembly videos and was curious about your tools. I ordered the small wiha set in the green box like you have, and ordered a couple of the ifixit drivers. Unfortunately I didn’t realize the drivers ifixit sells are for 4mm size bits, and the wiha set are 1/4”. So no working. So then I ordered the 1/4” driver size from ifixit which they call mahi or some fish name. Unfortunately this handle is huge in the hand. An improvement to your video might be to call out the bit sizes.

Have you heard of Loctite 243? Similar to 242, but way better performance on aluminum and stainless without an accelerant.
Why Loctite Blue when Purple is what is recommended by Loctite for those screw sizes?
Why have three separate Ifixit bit driver handles when for a fraction of the cost you could have excellent quality fixed blade screwdrivers by Wera or similar in T6, T8 and T10? Keeping a different handle for each size kind of removes the point of bit drivers, i.e. their interchangeability.
I was wondering what you were using Frog Lube for. It's an awesome lubricant for firearms, because they get so hot. I imagine it's terrible on knives as a lubricant since it's a few hundred degrees lower than what it is in a hot AR.

Why use the iFixit shafts with the Wiha heads? That seems like a bit of a pain to mix and match. I mean I get it on one level. Sometimes combining aspects of different items gives you precisely what you want and/or need. Eddie Van Halen's Frankenstrat comes to mind. He wanted the "fat" sound of a PAF pickup found in a Gibson, but wanted the playability of a Stratocaster along with a tremolo. Hence his combining the two brought about the modern day "Super Strat".

Thanks Nick...Frankie and Bird were using some EDCi on a recent review and said that they had it on good authority that it is food grade safe. At least that’s what I think they said. I may have to watch it again. If you get any new info on that, please let us know.
I've heard it's got safe ingredients, but isn't certified. But 'heard' and 'telling my viewers it's food safe' are different things, I'm trying to be more careful about these things.

Your experience, shared, is much appreciated. Particularly regarding the inve$tment in quality tool$, where it's important to get it right on the first try.
I really like the Fixit drivers (bought 3)... note that they take 4mm stock bits, not 0.25". I agree that the expensive bearing-handled drivers are an excess... for me, it's better to have money like that tied up in knives. Also like the Fixit spudging tools, and the Spyderco ceramic files. Lots of good recommendations here. One suggestion... wish I'd gotten a short 4" long caliper, instead of an 8" long caliper.

Where’s the T-handle driver that you used in the AD-15 disassembly video? That thing looks like a better tool for applying torque to the screws. Can you share make and model? Thanks!
It's a very poor choice, actually. Bits just don't fit so well.

I use Wiha 75802 System 4 Micro Bit to 1/4 ($6) with the Bahco Stubby Length Magnetic Bit Holder Ratcheting T-Handle ScrewDriver 808050TS ($20). The adapter lets you use the bits from that Wiha kit in any 1/4 hex driver, the Bahco is that. You can probably use Wera 013390 T-handle Rapidaptor but it’s pricey at $55 and I don’t think it’s a ratcheting driver.
I see that steel rulers everywhere and I want one. Every one I find in a store near me has a cork backing. I've thought about carrying the ruler from a combination square in with my stationery but that's a bit much for me.
I hate that handlens/magnifier/jeweler's loop. I've only had to use one once but it felt like I was putting in contacts. I am not skilled enough to operate one of those. I'm also not skilled enough to use a sharpening stone. I bought one for my chef's knife and ended up taking a monster chunk out of it. I won't be able to replace it for a good long while.
Jewelers loupe wise, get a lighted loupe. The two white LED’s are really helpful, and get a wide lensed one. Those have a bigger lens on them, which is much easier on the eyes.
The trick with them is to not put the loupe on the item, and focus that way. The best way is to have the loupe be brought up to the eye, THEN bring the object up. It’s not jarring and makes the experience 100% better.

For knives you should really be using the purple Loctite 222.
