Funny you said that, in a behind the scenes the creators and Nickelodeon did to further promote the show, the creators had stated that all the bending are based on real life martial arts styles.
Earthbenders in general use a combination of Tiger and Crane.
Toph's Earthbending, however, is based on the Mantis Style

Earthbenders use Hung Gar. Toph uses Chu Gar Southern Praying Mantis. Waterbenders use tai chi. Firebenders use Northern Shaolin. And Airbenders use bagua.
Now that toph is in the gang, there's guranteed to be laughs every episode. She's my favorite character, and for a reason.

Yeah, as somebody with, very mild, autism myself, I love seeing people with "disabilities" do stuff no "normal" person can do, like Toph does here. I myself don't have any special "abilities", though I've always been top of my class, and am very intelligent in general, but I know other people with autism who do, and it's incredible to witness.
I love the episode "The Blind Bandit." Great episode that introduces an amazing new character. Toph as well as her bending style are awesome. The next one, Zuko Alone, is also an amazing episode. In fact, the rest of the season from here on out really cooks.
Also the earth rumble match, what we get to see of it anyway, was a really cool idea and a lot of fun to watch. I also love their visual choice of showing us how Toph uses her bending to feel the vibrations in the ground. Perfection.
For Toph, it's not that Aang is really quiet, even if someone was completely silent she'd be able to tell they were there. She does use sound, yes, she listens very closely, but she sees with Earthbending. She can feel them through the ground/earth or stone, and when Aang uses his air to levitate there's no way for her to feel his presence besides feeling the air and listening
They call it seismic sense! She feels the vibrations produced by movement, through the earth. But Aang is basically levitating; as he barely interacts with the ground, he produces no vibrations at all, so she can’t feel him moving! :D

Toph is seriously one of the most intriguing and interesting characters I've ever seen, I hope you enjoy her journey with the gang as much as I did.
Would love to see her fight Bumi, but more interesting is their completely different fighting styles. Bumi is very flashy, with the big moves and powerful attacks, while Toph is very timid, and defensive, at least when fighting 1v1, with the way she holds her arms in front of her center all the time.

Well, I believe it's your lucky day my friend. there's a canon comic story written by Mike and Bryan of Bumi vs Toph, it takes place during Toph and the gang's stay with the white lotus before the final battle, give it a go, it's really good.

Season 2,not only does it introduces Azula THE villain,it also introduces Toph THE best character of the franchize tied with Iroh and adds lore to THE best avatar, Kyoshi.

@@adeolaadeleke465 we meet another avatar who's even worse about that. Kyoshi is probably on the worse end of the scale, though. Also, I'd disagree the Avatar's job is to intervene in wars. It's to mediate between the four nations. Intervening in intranational wars, like one earth king conquering the others, falls below that threshold.
Sokka's hat is real. The hat is called a wushamao (乌纱帽) and was traditionally worn by government officials and civil servants in Imperial China. In Sokka's case, he's taking on the persona of a public investigator; more specifically, he's likely referencing China's most famous investigator: Bao Zheng (包拯).
The Boulder is voiced by none other than The Hardcore Legend himself, Mick Foley. This series is the gift that keeps on giving.
This show needs a 4K remaster, for streaming, besides Blu-Ray, it's the one thing where the legend of Korra is really superior.

Fun fact about Toph’s martial arts form. It was invented by a blind martial artist! The creators talked about that, apparently they found out AFTER designing the show! Crazy coincidence right?

But it never occurred to me that when Toph is flying on Appa all she sees is his guts. Thank you for that thought.
Flesh isn't earth, so she can't even see his guts. While riding on Appa Toph is no different than any normal blind person.

I mean she would be able to feel Appa breathing and his heart beating and maybe his tummy grumble but that’s about it I would imagine. Considering she can feel how someone is lying or telling the truth.
Easily one of the more anticipated episode of season two.
One small point i i don’t se commented in on is that Toph can predict where an attach is going by the way someone lines up there feet.
You see this in her fight with Fire Nation Man. There is a slow motion focus on his foot moving into position as he prepares his strike. Toph moves out of the was of where it was going. And then strikes back.
Tooh isn’t just over powered ro be over powered. She has smart strategy as well as skill. And then she beats everyone up
I love that in this joined reaction, you met two of the most badass female Earth Kingdom natives: Avatar Kyoshi and Toph.
To answer your question, yes the hat is a real thing. It looks like a Chinese scholar hat, part of the futou, a type of traditional Chinese headwear usually worn by government officials/important people, you also see it in a lot of other Asian cultures (like Korea and Japan) because the headwear was introduced, and adopted, in their cultures as well. So basically, it's a government offical hat. And because Sokka is investigating, being a detective, i think it's a reference to a Chinese historical magistrate and detective called Judge Dee or his fictional counterpart based on the historial figure, Detective Dee, he was known for being really intelligent, with a strong sense of justice. Think, sort of Sherlock Holmes... before Sherlock Holmes was created? There's actually quite a few movies, TV series about this character.
Most, if not all of Avatar has a very heavy Asian influence - in the clothing, the culture, the customs, the fighting styles, etc.

So due to the location of which Sokka is wearing the hat, it is most likely a reference to Korean scholars. The areas around Kyoshi Island are influenced by Korea and Japan. The world of The Avatar isn't just a mishmash of Asian cultures. It has distinctive zones with mixtures. Within the map of the world, you will be able to separate out cities and regions and their influences but see the change of influence within the same kingdom. Most people like to simply say Fire Kingdom is Imperial Japanese/Chinese, Water Kingdoms are Inuit, Earth Kingdom is Chinese, and Air Kingdom is Tibetan but it's not that simple.
Finally Toph has appeared, she's my favorite character
Toph was truly the best addition to Team Avatar. And even later in the show we see her take on the whole Earth Kingdom's army
4:28 Sokka's hat was based one the ancient Chinese Wushamo & was worn by judges, investigators, magistrates & officials.
Toph has a unique fighting style. All earth benders are based off of a real marshal arts (forgot the name for earth bending) but toph mostly relies on the a unique marshal arts created by a real life blind kid, praying mantis. Arms tucked in, fast, precise sharp strikes. Even her arm swings are slashes

The Avatar Day judge guy is the same voice actor as Po’s goose father in Kung Fu Panda.
Kyoshi started out as a criminal and had little problem killing people, also she lived for well over 100 years old.

The Boulder was supposed to be voiced by The Rock and the Boulder was originally supposed to be Aang’s master. Notice how Community Service was not next to Boiled In Oil. Toph is awesome.

Most earthbending in this show is based on the Chinese martial art, Hung Ga. It is characterised by low powerful stances, creating a solid form rooted to the ground. This is in contrast to Toph, who uses a rare form of Kung Fu, the Southern Praying Mantis style. Southern Praying Mantis is characterised by a strong stance, powerful waist, fast heavy forearms and quick hand movements.
Trivia buffs will know that according to legend, the Southern Praying Mantis style was created by a blind woman, but the show runners didn't actually know this when they chose this to be her fighting style. Sifu Manuel Rodriguez, the show's martial art expert, would tell Bryan Konietzko later.

Water tribe should be the preeminent naval and trade power. That's probably less true after the war, but it's not a stretch to think that 100 years before everywhere would accept water tribe money.
@@Colp2 Very true, but most institutions will understand the exchange rate and allow you to transact with minimal friction. Imagine trying that with the Chinese Yuan or Turkish Lira or Bangladeshi Taka.
And here is (in my opinion) the best character in the whole damn show. And her style of earth bending in the show actually IS a different style from the other earth Benders. A lot of thought and detail went into the show that just makes it so so good.

2:52 If I recall correctly, a scene went out of its way earlier to show a merchant accepting water tribe money. It could be an official government thing. But seeing the village's sense of "justice" demonstrated thru the episode, I've always taken it as a way for the officials to be pricks to the Avatar.
Also love the "Emperor has no clothes" gag at 7:10. Doesn't get acknowledged enough.

Toph is a super neat character!! Also all the different styles of bending ARE based off of tradition styles of fighting!!
The water benders focus more on traditional Chinese tai chi (which focus a lot on how the body movement flow from one to the next there is continual back and forth motion as energy is slowly pushed/pulled)
The earth benders focus on hung guar or more stance oriented fighting styles (a horse stance is the most common fighting position of earth benders because the feet stay on the ground and center of balance is basically at the max- allowing for blocks or grapples super effectively)
Fire style is more like shaolin - which focuses of breathing and ferocity of hits both in power and speed. (Being more fast paced kicks or fast paced punches. A punch that has a spin into a backhand or a kick which spins into a back kick- the blows are to be made as fast as possible and with motion constantly flowing)
And air style is most similar to Baguazhan or circular style!! Basically it’s all footwork! You’re constantly moving your feet in a circle and walk as if writing the letter C with you toes. Because the focus is on footwork you’re constantly dodging or spinning away from whatever is coming directly to you. The force applied to someone is pushed to the side and away or the blow simply moves past never connecting. The idea is your body can move to dodge at every opportunity or how your body can pivot/bend/turn at different axis’s
All this to say that each fighter you see almost always follows these basic guidelines : once they are Masters they usually follow a specific style of fighting within those larger generalizations
Toph was based off of praying mantis style - which is why her poses are rather iconic as praying mantis style was used by various famous people - the writer were not aware when giving Toph this fighting style that the ORIGINAL CREATOR OF THE STYLE :: WAS BLIND.
It was a coincidence that for their blind character they picked the #####1 blind person fighting style devolved by a blind individual. It’s just perfection once they learned that they started giving her more fighting time and looking up more reasearch into how those specific fighting moves could be used for her character (as it’s almost too perfect that her character has mastered that style and to see her physically move and see almost the same way as intended by the inventor of the style is pretty phenomenal)
Mantis style focuses on quick movements absolutely but the main focus is feeling for when your opponent is moving and simply reacting. With that hands in front position looking like a mantis if a blow is to strike from the front both hands and feet are able to respond: one hand/wrist with a block the other hand for a grab/punch and the legs to kick and either close the gap or push the person away. For a fighting style it’s extremely defensive while being deceptively confrontational when necessary.
(Aang is fighting to never have the fight purely based off of how his martial arts style demands his movements to flow - the style wants you to stay light on your feet and to move around any thing coming towards you- earth style asks you to expect the weights/force/blows and to either use that momentum or have it be rolled/grappled/stopped. You can squat and have perfect center of balance and hold tremendous weight above you // that conflicts with staying in a circular walking pattern shifting one’s weight constantly or avoiding the weight all together.)

you mentioned tophs style, its based off of Southern Praying Mantis Style, which is closely related to Southern Dragon Kung Fu. every bending style in the show is based off of a real martial arts style from around the world.

The Boulder=The Rock Dwayne Johnson, the name, is a dead hive away, but also his body language and maner of speaking of himself at the 3rd person like...the Rock did.
-The BAd Hippo= Hulk Hogan, Big Dumb and also talks like...the Incredible Hulk (Hippo SMASH!=HULK SMASH) and the Only Wrestler who had the nickname "the Hulk" was well... Hulk Hogan.
-I'd say that Xin Fu is kinda like the Undertaker due to his gloomy looks, but i ain't sure.

Cool trivia about "Avatar Day:"
Avatar Kyoshi lived to be 200 years old and did have the largest recorded feet.
This is also where the joke about Kyoshi's bloodthirstiness came about, but all she did was not save a man from his own foolishness.
The Rough Rhinos are a reference to Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders.
You might recognize the mayor of the town as the wormy, kiss-up government official from Mulan.
Burning the effigies of the past and current Avatar could be seen as a reference to Burning Man, a popular pagan ritual where people believe to cast their old selves onto the Man and burn it so that they can leave the place a new person, like the Avatar's reincarnation cycle.
Sokka's hat and bubble-pipe are references to Sherlock Holmes.

Toph's earthbending style is specific for her. It's called Southern Mantis, which is known for its footwork and arm posture. It's appeared in cinema before, once in a James Bond movie and Kung Fu Panda has the character of Mantis.
The earthbenders in Earth Rumble 6 are based on wrestlers or wrestling archetypes. Fire Nation Man is the Heel, a character intended for the audience to hate. Then you've got a Luchador, an MMA Tarzan-type, and The Boulder is definitely based on Bautista.
Speaking of The Boulder, he's an update of what was intended to be Aang's earthbending teacher. And his back tattoo is of a Badger-Mole.
