The may have changed her design but the super buff jock is still her personality haha
aeris44 She acts a bit different now too , Toph was also going to ACT like the Boulder along with having his design. It would've been a little toned down from what it is now , but she would've been obnoxiously testosterone driven nonetheless.
Notice that you can see the 'neutral Jing' in Toph's technique. Her fighting style is largely based on counter attacks, waiting for the enemy to commit and then exploiting whatever openings they give her.
John Evans I was hoping someone else notices this. her "attacks" are so lethal because as you point out out, she is really counterattacking swiftly and accurately.

Kind of a blend of the two, I think.

Toph doesnt hear everything, she feels the vibrations in the earth thats how she "see"

She also has amazing hearing though to complement the vibrations
She is basically feeling the vibrations with her feet and she can't see anything in the air
And only solid things, she can't ever read writing on paper or pictures.
But she has proved to have incredible hearing senses
which is why she had trouble with aang he was very light on his feet so she couldn't see or notice his movements as well
That, and his airbending attacks caused very little if any vibrations. Toph might be the most powerfull earth bender ever but she wouldn't be able to do much against an air bender playing it's cards right for that reason.

The Boulder takes issue with that comment.
Most of Toph's environmental awareness is based on feeling them through the earth. Like I'm sure she has really acute hearing, too, but she definitely relies on the Earthbending Eyes the most. So any sneak attacks from the air or projectiles (that aren't earth, which she can sense) are where she's vulnerable. Which makes fighting while flying on Appa a bitch tbh
Yeah, and the series doesn't shy away from making use of that. Hell, that's how Aang beat her to begin with.

One thing I like about Toph is that the writers remember that she can't actually see anything. It's one thing to give a blind character some sort of super sense to compensate, it's another to then use that as an excuse to write them like they're not blind.

"The Avatar has kidnapped my daughter." The amount of ignorance in that statement! He doesn't even think that his daughter is capable enough to run away herself. He can't even consider the possibility of her actually making a decision of her own free will.
I actually always thought he knew she ran away, but he wanted to spin it like she was kidnapped, because that makes it less morally ambiguous.

Also, one of the creators is a big WWE fan. Earth Rumble 6 is based off of wrestle mania and the earth benders are based off of wrestlers.

I think the Fire Nation guy is actually more based off of Nikolai Volkoff...he'd come into the ring waving a Russian flag and would then sing the Russian anthem before the match. Volkoff was a frequent partner of the Iron Shiek, though.
I always thought the boulder was more of macho man randy savage..foley even sounds like him.

Glad you guys mentioned the camera work and superb animation. This episode won a few awards for its animation and it's very obvious why. For me this marks a turning point for Avatar when it turns from a good show into a classic.

Toph doesn't "hear" the eart, she FEELS the vibrations; and she probably did hear the belt falling but that's not enough sensory information to catch something falling (she can't feel anything in the air on account of it not producing vibrations on the ground for her to feel)...
About toph, Ive noticed something throughout the series. When we first get an explanation on how she sees, the show tells us that she can only see what's on the ground. And everything floating or flying through the air, she can't see. But she deflects several airborne projectiles through the whole show.
She can usually tell when people throw or bend projectiles at her based on their posture and movement, and when the projectile is made of Earth she can sense it too. The reason she didn't see the belt coming is because she couldn't sense Sokka's movement due to him being on top of Appa

FYI: "The Boulder" is voiced by Mick Foley, the pro wrestler. From articles I've seen, the show tried to get Dwayne Johnson but couldn't so his bud, Mick F., did it for them.
Toph is honestly the best girl of Avatar, she exudes that aura of incredible.

Love all the different styles of earthbending fighting shown in this episode
So interesting fact: All the bending styles are based on real forms of martial arts. Airbending is based on Ba Gua, Waterbending is based on Tai Chi, Firebending is based on Northern Shaolin, and Earthbending is based on Hung Gar (However, you may notice Toph's style of Eathbending is a bit different. This is because she uses a style based on Southern Praying Mantis, which was developed by a blind woman).
DiggerTheDwarf I think they're already aware that they're based on real styles and stances. They mentioned it heavily in the first few reactions , I'm fairly sure.
