Although she wasn't very happy about it, she kept it to herself n didn't make a scene while letting Aang interact with them as he taught them more of his culture, which put their initial mission on hold for a while before they resumed. For that, he thanked Katara later (unaware she was jealous tho) cuz the reason he hung out with the fanclub wasn't for the attention on himself but on the air nomad culture. He was just so happy to see people showing interested in his people's culture since it reminded him of his previous home. One of those awesome moments in their relationship that built up their trust for each other.

A small detail that goes unnoticed a lot about this episode. IS Aang wears the belt on his head upside down. So it looks like the arrow points downward to match his tattoo.
This part of the show gets underappreciated. These episodes about the fire nation that seem like goofy side stories are about humanizing the fire nation. That kind of sentiment is sorely lacking in the world today, I don't mean specifically in actual war although that obviously is happening but all over politics and politically adjacent group discussions.
along with that it gives us some great worldbuilding really fleshing out the fire nation. and more importantly it gives us a much needed break from the darker heavier tones. avatar wouldn’t be avatar without the goofy lighthearted stuff. and the whole ba sing se arc was pretty heavy and the s3 opener was too and most of the rest of this season is the darkest most mature stuff yet. so some levity in these early s3 episodes works pretty well
Calling these episodes filler (even lackluster ones like The Painted Lady) is like calling Thanksgiving side dishes "filler," or calling the milk in your cereal "filler." It's part of the balanced meal that makes the whole thing feel real. Can't have the icing on the cake without the cake itself!
@@SomeRUclipsTraveler Painted Lady is one of the episodes I had in mind when I wrote this and my hot take is its actually a good and important episode. (Spoiler after this point for anyone who may care) The episode has several important lessons to teach and also shows character growth for several characters. The most overlooked lesson is the importance of helping the people right in front of you and not sacrificing them to some big picture ideas. The village in the episode was suffering specifically because they were overlooked in pursuit of the big picture by the fire nation, which is the fire national greatest problem. Sozen started the war to spread the prosperity of the fire nation to the world, a plan that explicitly sacrifices the small people to a bigger goal and as time went on they continued to sacrifice people on the micro level which turned it from a prosperous nation into the tyranny it became. If the avatar is going to fix the world he can't repeat the mistakes that lead it to where it is now. Katara has to remind Saka and even Aang to a lesser extent to not overlook the people right in front of you. It also shows katara growth from her concentration with Zuko at the end of season 2. Zuko broke the ice for her recognizing the people of the fire nation as people by making her examine her own (admittedly well founded and understandable) prejudice against the fire nation. Then Aang shows the group how human the fire nation is with the dance party, he at this point is the least prejudiced against the fire nation because he has what are for him recent memories of the fire nation before the war, he remembers their humanity. Katara reminds Aang of that in the painted lady, he was starting to get too wrapped up in the big picture. It also shows the problem with over helping, which is a motherly figure katara is prone to do. She does a lot of things for the village but in the end they ultimately need to get them to help themselves and that's what makes all the difference in the long term solution.
Addie is so funny. And i love Maddies observations and predictions. And everyones first reaction to aang with hair is always hilarious, I saw this as a kid so it was mindblowing 😂
3:41 Addie really waiting for the beach episode lol she down bad. 12:16 WOW I didn't expect to learn this watching you guys, you learn something new everyday!
Back in season 1, we see how hurt aang was when all his friends wouldnt let him play with them anymore after they found out he was the avatar. Can you imagine how happy he must have been when that kid asked him to come play hide & explode.
i’ve always adored this episode even though it’s fairly close to filler. it humanizes the fire nation, gives aang some cool characterization, develops aang and katara, zuko iroh and zuko combustion man stuff, and it’s just funny. W episode
A fun fact I never knew until later on, but the R&B singer Tinashe voices Anji!! I thought that was super cool to find out after she had became famous for her music.
Yes, I love this episode! It's more of a fun episode, aside from the Zuko stuff, but like you guys said, it's our first real inside look at the Fire Nation and how they're just people. Also, loved Cannon and Carter's simultaneous, "Flameo hotman!", at 2:00. 😂 The reactions to Aang's rizz this episode were great too.
This episode is so cool for so many reasons and undoubtedly people have already pointed them out, but they’re just so cool in this sort of messed up kind of way. The Fire nation does propaganda their own people, kind of similarly to Ba Sing Se. For story reasons of Iroh not talking to Zuko is pretty amazing. He’s hurt and betrayed and scared for this young man that he loves as his son. Zuko still clearly struggling with the right thing to do, and who he supposed to be and I just love the fact that Iroh doesn’t yell at him or berate him, reprimand him in anyway. He just stays silent and lets Zuko figure it out on his own this time. Zuko has all of the lessons and tools that his uncle has given him, he just has figure out how to use them. 💔❣️
Loved how we got to see more of the everyday people of the Fire Nation, especially the kids and what kind of environment they're growing up in. The Zuko/Iroh moments broke my heart. I felt for Iroh...He looked so sad and disappointed and I can't blame him for feeling like that. At the same time though, I felt for Zuko as well because it's so obvious how conflicted and lost he really was. The dude has got some major issues he needs to sort out. I'm actually glad that Iroh isn't there for him anymore, because Zuko needs to do all of this on his own.
This was one of my favorite episodes when I was a kid. Probably because I was (and still am) a HUGE Kataang shipper, and I thought their dance was so cute 🥹
One of my favorite episodes of season 3! Seeing the normalized fire nation citizens and also how far the royal family went to keep the secret of what their nation did. Also just love the Footloose feel of this episode!
When watching the dancing scene I thought to myself "Hey that kinda looks like Capoeira (Brazilian fighting dance)". But then Brigg mentioned the Brazilian director and it totally makes sense why that's in there! :)
The Headband is easily my favorite "filler-type" episode. First, Aang is so adorable, and then Aang/Katara/Sokka shennanigans, Kataango, and this incredible version of the Fire Nation, these children being literally brainwashed by fake history and lies and not experiencing true freedom but finding it within themselves because of Aang's humanity and ability to connect with people. Ijust love it, it's just a pure Aang-episode.
I never put together this episode and how the school curriculum views dancing with what is said during the dragon dance episode until now. Interesting : )
11:50 Joaquim dos Santos is Portuguesese and not brazilian guys. He participated in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Justice League and many others.
Katara doesn't get enough credit for riding along with Sokka's shenanigans. "Fire. Wang Fire. And this is my wife, Saphire." Shit is ridiculous, yet Katara, without missing a beat, "Saphire Fire. Nice to meet you." Dude has the best sister.
