We could argue that... Aang IS a kid, so he's going to make stu#id desicions but still, it's their perception and i couldn't agree more that Aang was being selfish, i don't think it'll make them like the show less because of it.

    • @Axxidous
      @Axxidous 9 месяцев назад +21

I would argue that it's not silly to criticize people for not being empathetic to a fictional character because the point of stories is FOR them to play on our emotions. As long as a character is portrayed, we view them as people. So if we lack empathy, it isn't about whether or not the character is fictional. It's about whether or not the person has empathy for them, regardless if they are real or not. They're either an empathetic person to the scenario or they aren't.

If someone has an opinion and someone else as an opposing opinion, that's fine. Literally the reactors on the couch also discuss and disagree and debate on opinions as well. As long as we aren't demonizing each other or trying to control them. But making a case for a different opinion is fair game. Like they did. Like the OP did. Like you did. And like I'm doing.

It can be a dramatic call back and a stupid decision. Which is what makes the writing so good in Avatar. Characters have more depth than a single character trait and are allowed to experience and convey human emotions. I can understand why someone would find Aang's behavior frustrating but personally it's episodes like this that makes me appreciate the script writers. Aaron Ehasz definitely cooked.

I agree. Just because we empathize with someone and understand the motivations behind their behavior doesn't mean we agree with excuse the behavior. It's perfectly fine to say that you understand how someone feels and also acknowledge that they are expressing it in an inappropriate, unhealthy, or abusive manner. In "the Desert" for instance, Aang had every right to feel enraged but he didn't have a right to lash out at his friends. In this episode, I can understand how upset Aang is because he doesn't want people to think he abandoned them again but his behavior is reckless and endangers himself and everyone else.
Someone in the reaction pointed out, "we all make stupid decisions". I think that's an excellent reflection that demonstrates empathy and the recognition of poor decision-making and that these two things are not mutually exclusive.
*I want to clarify that I don't think there was anything wrong with the points that were made regarding Aang's point of view and character growth. I just wanted to make the point that it's also okay to show empathy and also point out unhealthy behaviors.
**Also, I can understand is that during the reaction portion, it makes sense that some people will feel super frustrated or irritated by characters' actions. I think that in itself is fine because those are just raw unfiltered initial emotions which these reaction videos are meant to capture. The place where you can sort of resolve those unfiltered emotional reactions with the consideration to context is during the discussion portion of the reaction which I think you did an okay job with here. As long as those issues are brought up in the discussion portion, I think it is fair for viewers not to be too critical of the reaction portion; it's important to keep in mind, that the as previously mentioned, the reactions are meant to be unfiltered so I don't think that's the way they would act towards someone the real world. I would imagine that they would react in a more composed and thoughtful way in everyday life.
      ***edited for clarification points.

I love the scene with Katara and Hakoda so much. I love the angle they went with, where she's harboring resentment towards her dad and doesn't even realize it until Aang leaving brings it all out. Her processing her feelings is so well done, saying that logically, she knows Hakoda did nothing wrong but she can't help but feel the way she does, and just needs to pour her heart out.
Katara had to take on so much responsibility at a young age, due to family tragedy. She can appear to be the most "put together" a lot of the time, since she always is trying to take care of her friends, but she has open wounds. (In fact, her being so motherly can be read partially as a trauma response, she essentially became what she lost.) She feels so real, she's such a good character.

Aang heading to Fire nation might be stupid to us as audience but not to him. He failed at protecting the earth kingdom amd he feels guilty not only that the people in earth kingdom r now pretty much war criminals but also the fact he was right there. Unlike the at attack at Airtemples where aang wasnt present at the time, aang was there in earth kingdom and he couldn't do a thing. Ik it's frustrating but I also think it's sad when he tries to go in that Storm.
Also I think people overhate aang and don't hate zuko at all (it's not just u guys, many reactors). I'm not saying people should hate zuko and love aang I'm saying when people hate aang for not being perfect and being "whiny" and "angsty" but when zuko does it u let it go because why? Because aang is the "good guy" and zuko is "bad guy" so it's for him to frustrating but aang has to be perfect.

And that's what you saw Zuko going through when he was sick and Iroh was taking care of him and he then woke up as a better person. Him betraying Iroh did not make sense writing-wise seeing how Zuko was set up to go the other direction and team up with the gaang and Iroh to defeat Azula. This was foreshadowed in a previous episode as well. (This will make more sense when you look more into the chakra plot hole from the show and how Buddhism played a huge part in the series.)

it's also possible the intention matters with the spirit water healing. imagine the spirit water as fuel. katara can use that fuel to bring someone back from just dying (like she did with aang) but there's not enough fuel to heal his scar as well after bringing him back. if she used the fuel purely with the intention of healing the scar, like with zuko, perhaps there would have been enough fuel for it to work because she wouldn't be doing the wildly difficult task of bringing someone back to life
if your car is on empty, you have enough fuel to drive home or to drive to the gas station. you don't have enough to drive home then drive to the gas station, gotta pick one or the other. bad analogy but yeah, maybe katara didn't have enough spirit water left to also heal the scar after she brought aang back to life.

Then wakes up and simply panics, and when we panic, we do stupid things. Great people also had failures and irrational moments. Also the Katara tries to make him see that he as to accept help, also expect losses, but they choose to help him. Dont forget there were casualties and prisioners in the last season.
Aang is 14/15, katara 16/17, zuko and sokka 18/19.

Nah my G you're getting all the ages wrong. At the Promise comic, after the EOS, its stated Aang is almost 14. This means that during season 3 he was 13, even if at the start of the series he is 12. Katara starts the series as 14, but there is no reference if she has her birthday during the series or not, its possible that by EOS shes 15. Just like Sokka starts at 15 and maybe ends up at 16.
Zuko is supposed to be the oldest and he is 16. By the end of the series its really easy to forget how young they are, specially aang, because they mature so much.

@@pietroiso2 thanks for the correction, my memory. Still, my point is to emphatise with Aang's losses over the season and impact on a young kid.

This show had such a good progression of power in these characters, it wasn’t like katara was suddenly good, like it felt earned with how good she is in season 3

Katara could have healed Zuko's scar. That's the entire point. For one, if you want to apply logic to the "wave your hands and make a giant explosion and stomp your feet to do complex terraforming" universe, then it's that Katara was attempting to bring Aang back to life as her priority and thus she wasn't concerned about scars while if she'd used it on Zuko, it would've been solely to heal him. Thematically though, it shows what Zuko sacrificed by turning away from the path he'd chosen. He chose to go back to the Fire Nation and back in his old role as Prince Zuko, Heir to the Throne. Therefore he has restored his "honor" and achieved his goal of being back in his father's good graces...but at a cost.
Remember after he woke up from his fever, Zuko felt at peace. He was HEALING emotionally from his trauma. He'd given up on trying to appease his father and accepted that was not his path and was not good for him. He was content with the direction of his life. His initial reaction to seeing his sister was just like Iroh's - prepare to attack (only Zuko thought standing his ground when outnumbered 15 to 1 was a good idea). Katara offering to heal his scar was a symbol of the healing he'd done emotionally - an external sign of his internal progress. But he didn't chose that path, so he didn't get healed, just as taking the wrong path...well, you'll see as Season 3 progresses how well he's healing emotionally now.
Meanwhile, Aang's scar is a reminder of what happened. It's a reminder that the attack on Aang not only was deadly, but that it also took away his ability to enter the Avatar State. His chakra is permanently blocked because of the attack and he cannot access the final chakra due to the injuries he sustained. So it makes sense from a storytelling perspective (esp. on a kids show that was on when VODs and DVRs were in their infancy and streaming not a thing yet) to keep a visual reminder so audiences can go "Oh yeah, that's why he can't get into the Avatar State. Azula zapped him."

I’m pretty sure at this point in the show, zuko would be the heir to the throne bc he’s the first born but mostly bc he has the credit for killing aang. With that being said though if it came out that zuko didn’t kill aang and was he was still loyal to the fire nation, ozai would have no problem doing what azulon couldn’t (crown the second born)
