This with the light vanishing in her eyes is one of the most terrifying things i ever witness in a anime, ive watch over 1000 animes but this one hits me rly hard. But the rly sad thing is, that this anime is actual a good example how idol-industry works.

This is one of the best first episodes in all of anime. And it really is great to go into it as blind as possible so all the twists and turns hit you the right way.

I've seen it a million times, but Ai's first time telling the kids "I love you" kicks me in the stomach every time.
When I originally watched this, I thought it was good so I held off watching it until season 2 came out, but now I'm such a fan of this show 😂

You really need to react to the OP, IDOL by YAOSOBI, now that you've seen the first episode. They made an English version that can be found on RUclips which is a must watch. It's incredible what the lyrics say in regards to the show. I won't spoil anything but it gives you a much deeper appreciation for how good the first episode is.
Just in here to give bits of idol trivia and details:
- 1:29 Kinda like youtubers, yes they do have a facade, but "always" like "entirely" fake is tiring. There's actually a reaction channel where various idols do react to the show. They try to be genuine and the happiest part of themselves for the fans, but naturally there's stuff you don't tell fans, since it's personal, and you can't get too close to fans.
- The opening performance is at Budokan, generally an iconic milestone of a venue to perform at. The timeline is weird if you think about it, but for a "legendary" idol, hitting that milestone would be rare but possible.
- 4:34 Ai's voice actress is Rie Takahashi; she's part of the seiyuu unit Earphones, and also voices a rival idol, Shika in IDOLM@STER. She has actual experience performing live! Not unusual for Japanese VAs nowadays. Ruby's seiyuu, Yurie Igoma, loves idols just like Ruby, and this was her big breakout role. Aqua's seiyuu, Otsuka Takeo, voices an idol, Eishin Mayumi in IDOLM@STER SideM.
- 12:53 Since the anime aired, an idol, Fujisaki Nagi, had announced she's actually a single mother (at 23, a mom of a 3 year old and 1 year old). Usually agencies and/or fans would raise a fuss over dating rumors, making them apologize or retire, but she's still an idol to this day. Dating at all is still a bit of a coin toss on whether or not idols get in trouble, but it's definitely improved since years past - depends on both the fans and the agency, they can be very accepting when such news comes out.
- 23:02 Personally I like to describe idols as the internship to the entertainment industry. Many may go on to live normal lives and pursue careers outside of entertainment, but with the right connections, being an idol and getting all kinds of work can help start a career in singing, acting, voice acting, anything.
- 23:35 Mini-lives may need lottery tickets - as the name implies, it's a smaller venue, but for a big name, it can be exciting to see them up close, maybe even getting to do meet and greets. The "OI! OI! OI!" are part of calls/chants that fans use - for common song structures you can pretty much guess what chants to use and follow vibes. It's all a bit of a reciprocal vibe check - the idols give out good vibes, the fans return the good vibes, and it's a feedback loop of hype!
- 24:35 What the babies are doing is wotagei. Penlights (also called lightsticks) may be used, but looks like the babies got some UOs - ultra orange glowsticks. Usually we snap these when at particularly hype moments of a song. Technically the babies don't exactly do any actual moves (waza), but it's a pretty fluid thing that one might just say they've just invented babu waza lmao. Look up "wotagei" and you'll probably find some people who do it as choreo - technically these choreographed dances has been named otakugei since it's done as choreo for an audience, rather than done in response to an idol performance.
- 38:59 There's several domes in Japan - usually used for baseball, but they're also great venues for concerts. Big western names easily have enough money and star power to tour these venues, but likewise, only the biggest Japanese musical acts could land such venues. These acts could also make it internationally, if they so choose. So getting Tokyo Dome is a very big deal.
- 41:37 This was generally agreed upon to be influenced by the stabbing of Mayu Tomita. Though initial reports, even in Japan, called her an idol, she only played an idol in a TV show, and was generally working as an actress and singer. The assailant attacked her due to her rejection of his romantic advances and gifts. Tomita still lives, but was very scarred and traumatized by the event. The assailant was jailed, and anti-stalking laws have been revised to protect victims as a result.

I can never cry but that episode when I watched it on Disney+ in English i sheaded a single tear that’s how bad it made me feel so sad and that’s like the 2nd or 3rd anime that made me cry.

For me, I got into the manga when I heard that it was going to be animated. I remember reading it and hitting that point and crying. I got into watching the anime when it started and cried at the end. Even with all of the reactions I’ve watched, I’ve yet to make it through the first episode without crying.

The themes, scenarios and struggles depicted in this episode even those briefly mentioned connects to future episodes really well.
I'm glad you guys appreciate the explanations of the entertainment industry in this episode because Oshi No Ko does a fantastic job describing many of the details, both good and bad, throughout the series.

Hoshino Ai is voiced by Takahashi Rie, which is known for her role as Emilia in Re:zero (among others, but that's the only part she had in the shows that are on this channel)
Oh and by the way, she specifically asked doctors how people speak when bleeding out so she can authentically portray _that_ scene

I think you guys figured it out since then, AI's voice actress is Rie Takahashi. Not gonna lie, if it wasn't her, I don't know if this first episode would have hype so much and so many people (she's damn good). You may have allready hear her as Megumin in KonoSuba, Emilia in ReZero, Tomo in Tomo-Chan is a girl, Hu-Tao in Genshin Impact game... and many other ones ;)
i love how Ai is always compared to the first star of the evening. that "star" is actually the planet Venus, named after the goddess of love. and what does Ai mean in japanese? love!
nobody was ready for the first episode i was a manga reader so i knew what was coming but the anime just showed it in such an impactful light that it hit even harder than when i read it in the manga. the anime is literally doing gods work especially in season 2 probably the best adaptation i have seen.

AI's parents divorced and she grew up in an orphanage, never knowing love. She tried to love her fans as an idol, but that wasn't love. However, she gave birth to twins and showered them with unconditional love, eating meals together, celebrating birthdays, dancing together, and more. The tragedy is that she was capable of loving people, but only realized this at the very end of her life... . What kind of lives will Aqua and Ruby, who received love from AI, lead as teenagers? Will Aqua seek revenge? I'm looking forward to it.

You guys know it's the same writer as Kaguya sama but the manga artist who gave birth to these beautiful characters is also an artist famous for their work on an anime called 'Scum's wish' which is basically about a highschool couple who don't actually love each other but someone they can't be with and are basically dating each other substituting them as the person they truly love to stave off their loneliness.
I watched it years ago and loved the art that time too.
Can't say it's a reaction worthy anime but a good show to watch in alone time when you just need some drama.

You're right the rest of the show is the same, there's funny moments, lots of introspection into the harsh and complicated realities of the entertainment industry and then it randomly hits you with really sad moments, it's an awesome show and the animation and music stays strong

On top of the fact that it's a "prologue" to the real story, I think the reason why they aired all 4 episodes at once, is so people know what kind of story they can expect;
At first it looks like a cutesy idol show, then it looks like a deep look into the industry, then it looks like a silly/cute reincarnation story, then it looks like a drama, and then a revenge story...
If they stop at any point before the 4th episode, people wouldn't really know what the real story is about!
