      100% I currently have 01 mk4 supra GE which I intend to manual swap and build up and this video has been an absolute gem.       @@BigHorseCK2.0 overall yes you're right, the GTE is going to handle more horsepower better, and if you left a GE engine stock, it can't handle a ton of power. BUT! If you upgrade to an MLS head gasket and get some beefy con rods on the GE, it's essentially the same as a GTE engine but it just won't have the oil squirters which is why some people like the GE more, because you can maintain a higher oil pressure because it doesn't have oil squirters!

    You don't need a machine shop for most stock 2JZ engines, a $50 cylinder honing tool and 400grit sandpaper will fix most crankshaft and cylinder walls issues, your crankshaft doesn't need to be mirror shine, it just needs to be smoother than 400grit, stains and discoloration will not affect it's operation.

      I'm totally with you that a DIY honing tool and some sandpaper can be a cheap and quick way to build an engine or fix some cylinder wall/crankshaft journal issues, but the quality of that build isn't going to be nearly as high as an engine worked on by a machine shop. Not to mention that a high power engine will need extremely precise tolerances that the DIY stuff can't get you.

    You missed the extremely important cleaning and disassembly stage. Bad cleaning can cause failure from particles and rusting, while disassembling the engine you need to pay attention to how loose or tight bolts are and ensure the valve buckets are not mixed up out of order.

      Very true, the cleaning and proper disassembly is extremely important. The reason I left it out of the video was because I was trying to focus more on how to build the 2JZ, not disassemble it.

    Another great video! I was delighted to see many of the part I used in my build were highlighted here (eagle rods, cp pistons). Something I learned from your video, which I am hoping turns out okay, is the finish of the head and block mating surfaces. Everything seemed to go together well but I know the machine shop I used did not specialize in 2JZ. Curious though, what were your goals for your 240 build? Any drag or drift in your future or strictly a street machine?

      Hey Chase thanks for the comment and congrats on your 2jz build! I wouldn't worry too much about those mating surfaces, most shops do a good job resurfacing those parts, I just live in a area where the machine shops aren't super high quality! So don't sweat it. In the worst case scenario, you do a leak down test and find there is a little leakage around the headgasket area, and you just take the head and block back to another shop to get those mating surfaces smoothed out! You could even try using copper spray on the head gasket if there is leakage around the headgasket, but I'm 99% sure you'll be ok!
      And thanks for asking about the goals on my 240! As of right now, I would like the car to be around 650whp, with a 8500rpm redline. It will be mostly a daily driver in the summer and spring months, and I would like to end up autocrossing it when it's finished! I have no plans to drag race the car or do any serious drifting though I'm sure I will be sliding that thing around more often than not!

      Thanks man! For a 1JZ, along with all the engine/fuel management mods you'll have to do, you really are going to need some aggressive cams because the ones that come stock on a 1J won't get you to 600hp. You are also gonna need a pretty large turbo!

    so basically i could find a deal for oem gte pistons and rods install those as long as i get the bearing measurement right in a ge keep the cylinder head stock if i really want to and since im not lookign for 800 i could get 400 out of that really easily and it would be much more reliable install a turbo kit and boom is that really all if i dont want to upgrade valvetrain or cams besides injectors or stuff i was thinking of sourcing anything that may be too weak on the ge from the gte such as injectors and fuel pump also i have a gs300 would the stock auto be able to handle that i do have a bit of a need to budget and was researching and if the compression ratio youre trying to achieve is 8:5 to 1 or 9 to 1 the oem gte pistons and rods have that exact compression ratio of 8:5.1 and since the crank is the same or similar if the bearing measurement is correct those pistons work fine the problem is if the tranny can handle the power and also am i missing something could i do those pistons and rods do the mls head gasket and a turbo kit and get 400 reliably? i was thinking of tuning the car to only have access to full hp in pwr mode and in normal ect mode i have maybe 250 or so so i keep reliability since alot of stuff is still stock maybe idk the true limits of the ge

      @@zoomie9734 thanks for the questions my man, there's a lot to tackle here so let's get started.
      1. There is no need to install GTE pistons for 400hp. Installing new pistons in a block is a lot of money and takes a lot of measurements and procedures to get right. All you need to do is install a thicker metal head gasket on your GE engine and you would be good to go (keep the stock pistons). As for the rods, you might get away with using the stock GE rods but I would swap them to GTE rods for reliability. And yes you just need to correctly size the bearings if you do end up swapping your rods for the GTE rods.
      2. I'm not sure if your automatic transmission can handle 400hp. I know a lot about manual transmissions but next to nothing about the automatic transmission in the gs300 so you'll have to do some research on that one, sorry!

    This would be my first ever building 2jz engine ...so I bought a car with spun bearing ..... and I don't no if I need bore or not .... I was thinking just buy stronger part like eagle rod like you said and I go with STD rod, pistons ,cylinder head and just buy stronger part like for head like valve springs Aggressive cams more....

      First of all, congrats on starting such an awesome project Tiger! So you can make 800hp on a 2jzgte on std rods, pistons, and head, and upgraded springs and cams. Heck, there are people out there making 800hp on a totally std engine! If I may recommend some things though... First, make sure you can rebuild your engine with std pistons in the first place. When I was rebuilding my engine, i wanted to keep the std pistons however if I were to hone the bores, my piston to wall clearance would not have been within spec, so I had to bore out my block for bigger pistons. Secondly, if you are planning to do upgraded cams and springs, get a valve job and upgrade the valves, valve stem seals, and buckets/retainers while you're at it. The more things you replace now, the less you will have to replace later!

      @@tigerbrown6799 So first thing you have to do is buy some valves, I bought GSC STD size valves for my build. Then you would need to take your cylinder head along with the new valves to a machine shop and ask them to do a valve job for you. Basically, the shop will take your cylinder head and cut the valve seats with a machine to give you a better seal against your valves. Hope this helps!

    Why cant we use higher compression like 10:1 or 11:1? Im new to 2jz, but not k series. K series can use up to 11.5:1 on 93 until around 450hp then e85 after. 12:1 will need e85 right away though. I wonder if its possible for 2jzge?

      You can run higher compression on the 2JZ but you're right you need e85. I don't know of anyone running higher than 10:1 on a 2JZ on 93 but like you said you can go higher CR with e85

      Hey man! Good catch! So I left those out because most of the time when you buy valve springs they will come with retainers, so that's why I mentioned the section on valve springs and didn't mention retainer choice. Also, most of the common big name companies that supply springs and retainers will be fine for general 2JZ builds, it's usually those guys that make 1500+HP that really start to get picky over specific retainer choice.     And would I be fine to run The engine as is unchecked at 500hp with a Single turbo exhaust manifold and with a stock intake manifold or should I just do preventative maintenance I just want my car to be a fun daily driver

      Hey brother! So price will differ from shop to shop. I can tell you from experience that getting my cylinder head built by HeadGames Motorworks cost around $5500 USD for parts+labor. If you want your bottom end done as well, you may be looking at around $4000-$6000 in parts and labor. I assume you are curious about labor costs and not about the labor+parts cost though. Most shops will charge around $90-$150 /hour. And depending on what you want to have done to the engine, you could be spending anywhere from $1500-$5000 in labor alone.
      To answer your second question, if you have a stock GTE engine, you will be fine to leave it stock and run it at 500hp with a single turbo and stock intake manifold. Some things I would check is your compression ratio and do a leakdown test to ensure your engine is healthy. I would suggest running a standalone ECU so you can have a reliable tune set on your engine but that's just me. If you have a GE engine, you will need to build the engine to have it make a reliable 500hp.

      I'm actually not sure man! With enough money you can put that engine into anything though! I don't know anyone that has done that swap before so you would likely have to do a ton of custom fabrication for things like the engine/transmission mounts.

    Generally pretty good info in the video except for the compression ratio section. Not as simple as you explained, you need to also consider power goals, boost limits, fuel type, just to name a few. And changing compression ratio with the head gasket is a stupid way to go about it, you interfere with 'squish depth'. The GE head has a step in it which is why it has a thinner head gasket than the GTE.

      Thank you for the info! You're absolutely right those are all things that need to be considered. I had mentioned changing the CR with the head gasket thickness because in my experience people will buy pistons around the CR ratio they need and then after all the machine work is done they will buy the properly sized head gasket to get the CR right where it needs to be. I didn't mean that people should just go out and buy 11:1 CR pistons and then buy a super thick head gasket to compensate😂

      @@TunerFaction Yes I got that impression later in the video but still wasn't super clear. So many guys start with a GE and just buy/swap all GTE internals including head gasket. Going from a ~O.4mm gasket to a ~1.35mm has a massive affect on the CR.

My point was more that there are a lot of fake parts being sold on eBay and if you aren't careful, you could end up purchasing a replica park instead of a genuine one. I'm not saying that happens often that someone buys a fake part, but it takes just one fake rear main seal to really give someone a headache!

      I did not end up keeping the A/C because the radiator does not allow enough room for the condenser part of the A/C system to sit in its normal location. I was hoping to buy a kit someday that will allow me to retain the A/C but I'm not too focused on it right now!

    I’m gonna be given a 2jz-ge or GTE engine either one has 40,000 miles are coming from Japan so I assume they’re the vvti iterations I also could get Toyota parts at cost through a dealership how beneficial is my hook up and getting Toyota parts going to be if I’m trying to get about 6 to 800 hp reliably out of one of these engines I will be putting the engine in my FJ cruiser since it’s a direct now mount if anybody wants to try man who is an expert, it would be greatly appreciate it the engine is a 161gte or 160ge

      Hey man! So I'm hoping I understand your situation correctly that you are getting a 2JZ-GE/GTE to put in your FJ Cruiser and you also have a way to get OEM Toyota parts and you want to know if that will be beneficial for 600-800hp? In my opinion I think it's super helpful to have a hookup to get OEM Toyota parts but those parts won't really help you increase the power of your engine, they are more like seals/bearings/gaskets.       Hey Keller! So a lot of people that build the NA-T 2jz run either the OEM Toyota TT head gasket which is around 1.2mm thick, or run an HKS 2mm head gasket which will drop the compression closer to 8.5:1. It's up to you what you want to run, but I would personally go with the HKS 2mm gasket!

      @@silvercross2020 when I said it's a simple build, I was referring to the fact that 800whp on a 2jz does not require a lot of complex parts or custom fabrication to achieve. In reality, 800hp can be achieved with all off the shelf parts and there is a lot of info on the internet on how to achieve 800hp which is why I labeled it as a simple build. I understand that it is still expensive and I'm not negating that fact, but the build in of itself is rather simple. That's awesome you are building a 2jz ge and I hope that goes well for you.       Absolutely Brandon! That's kinda what I was like when I started my project, I hadent ever really worked on a car before! The biggest advice I can give you is to do a TON of research before you start the project, it will make it a lot easier in the long run. Another piece of advice is to know the goals for the car before you start, things like what HP you want, what the intended use for the car is, etc. oh! and, as unfortunate as it is, the more money you spend on the project the easier it gets😄

    I watched this to mentally prep on what I need for my build.
    Later when I get money I’d definitely get more parts but I’m just thinking about getting rods, pistons and valves to throw in on my GE, since I got bad rings in cylinder 5. Any other parts I may need? I’m not looking for more power yet. Just to get the car up and running so I can continue saving.

      So far I’m planning on pulling the engine apart, taking the block to a shop to see if I need any machining, then I get the rods and pistons and possibly some valves just to get one step closer to a turbo build, but am trying to get the car up and running since I’m trying to make it my daily. Then I source a manual swap and get acquainted with a manual before I put a load of power into the car. I’m 100% gonna fall back to this video when I start putting more power.
