Has Team USA Learned From Their Past Mistakes?

- Will Team USA regain the FIBA World Cup glory? Their last appearance in 2019 ended in a worst-ever result for the country, but this year the composition of the team and a superstar coaching staff that includes Steve Kerr, Erik Spoelstra, and Tyronn Lue look extremely promising.
In this video, BasketNews' Augustas Suliauskas analyzes the adjustments to FIBA rules USA players will have to make, how the opponents will have to adjust playing vs the Americans & can Brunson, Edwards, and Jackson Jr trio lead the USA to gold in 2023.

You fucking know it you are just not ready to say it, team USA has always been better!!!!
LEBROL NEVER PUT USA ON TOP. U MEAN GARNETT CARTER AND KOBE DID. LE BRONZE PUT ON BRONZE MEDAL LIKE DUNCAN.
Stop with this narrative please. Tatum got injured as early as Group Stage last WC in 2019. They went into that tournament knowing they'll be relying on their athleticism & talent alone cause they accepted the fact that almost all of their key guys begged off so small ball is the key all the way.
But the thing is it's hard to do that if your best player isnt gonna be able to play... and it ruined the rotation, as if it wasn't complex enough knowing they had awkward combination of guards and tricky set of wings, especially when they lacked high-caliber bigs (despite Myles Turner showed up and did a great job for them. No disrespect to Plumlee & Brook though but they didn't have enough confidence because I feel their roles weren't specified that much)
And now they formed a very balanced "team". They now have secured that they'll be solid on any positions and their team composition made sure they'll have any roles they'll need for whatever situation they'll face. Don't get me wrong, they're so much beatable, Germany led by 12 against them earlier but I just don't get it why 12 NBA players (mind you, not just "players" but stars or atleast starters) wouldn't be favored against non-NBA players or those who hold a few.
And yes, this is enough to beat Slovenia, mainly because they still just don't have enough replacement for Goran & Cancar who tore his ACL. But maybe it's a toss up against ESP, GER, ofcourse FRA, and yes CND & AUS, maybe even DOM & LAT. I just felt they faced France way too early last world cup which didn't help at all because that was their worst possible match-up that time.
2:49 Anyways, great analysis & observation... and sound takes as usual.
What I like about this USA squad is that its built like an actual team and not an all star team. Give them a little more time to iron out the rough areas, and they will have great odds to win it all
Definitely. Their friendly games look promising. Kudos to those who picked the team
Yeah Slovenia losing 40-100 against the us🤣🤣
They just need to start haliburton and things will flow, and will have an absolute bucket off the Bench in Brunson
No, they suck, it’s our JV squad vs the world. They need to grow up fast! Or it will be an embarrassing experience. 🤷🏾👎🏾
@@kennethjackson9288You're going against countries with a population of 2 million. US can chill and do well
Making this team a less star oriented will definitely help them. -from what I can see they play more as a team, while also having young players that can play the whole game if they wanted to.
They're already playing as if they've been together for a while and without egos. They have great coaching team. It's exciting to see them play.
The 2010 and 2014 squads were similar to this. At the time, those players were great, but that was before they became iconic stars. 2010 Durant? 2014 Curry? USA in 2019 hurt by Tatem injury.
Ppl who supposedly analyzes TEAM USA leave out (on purpose) critical details. It would prove their dumb arguments wrong. This year Team USA reminds me of 2014 too.
That 2014 squad went off the following NBA season too. Almost all of them became monsters in their own way.
@sosmooth13 Mason Plumbley was on that team too and is still garbage lololoo
On the cut that Reeves opened up, he did more than cut. If you look, he slightly taps the player guarding bridges with his hand. Enough to make him turn around a split second and check on a pick. It was good movement + psychological game. It's the things stats can't show.
Yep. Often, the rule is - no contact, no switch. So the hand-touching actually makes it tricky. Does it count and we switch? Or it's not enough? Loved every detail of it
For me, when I looked at some of the coaching staff (Kerr, Spoelstra, Lue) and then some of the guards (Brunson, Halliburton, Hart, Reaves, Bridges) I was really comfortable and happy with how the team would perform collectively. Even if they don't win it all, I feel this will be a great showing for them. All of the combined personalities, skillsets and coaching experience leans towards a fun viewing experience for us hardcore USA/FIBA fans!
Who do you think is going to be THE guy?
@@AugustasSuliauskas I think it depends on the opponent between three players: Brunson, Edwards and Ingram in that order. I feel all three of them are more than capable of scoring in volume when desperately needed.
@@AugustasSuliauskas So far it's been Edwards. His off games are still good defensively and he still gives you 10 pts regardless
Great vid! Can you do a similar one on Canada? I think their small ball lineup where 4 players who are guards/forwards play at the same time is very exciting!
Beautifully made breakdown well done my friend ❤
I appreciate that a lot. Thank you!
Thank you for covering this USA team. I think they’re very exciting to watch and nobody is talking about it!
You got it. You mean the USA media is not giving them enough attention?
great analysis, good job
Thank you
It's the Kerr effect, hes a coaching genius when it comes to knowing how to get 5 man units working as 1
very impressed with the game analysis man this was great
I'm bummed that I'm just seeing this video! I really appreciated the explanation of the difference in gameplay between FIBA/International vs. NBA and the court-size details!
Happy birthday Augustas, great job as always 👍🏽
Oh thank you very much!
@@AugustasSuliauskasYour name is Augustas and you're born in August what a coincidence!
Great analysis once again! Thank you Augustas!
Appreciate the comment! Thank you
Great breakdown. I live in the USA and I like the make up of this team. Also with some of the absences from the other major teams, could be a nice tourney for the USA. One thing I want to see is who will be the go to player in the crunch. Kevin Durant was that guy in the past. My guess would be Edwards and/or Brunson.
Great point. I think Edwards as we saw yesterday vs Greece, but Brunson has been very active on offense and wasn’t shy of taking iniative
Smart video, solid critiques and insight.
Doncic: " scoring in the NBA is easier than in Europe, because of the three second rule in the NBA"
I like this team they just have to adjust to the rules and learn to play with chemistry with each other and the guys that are primary scorers for their teams have to put their egos aside and not lack when they don't have the ball... but US vs Canada would be interesting this year
I think it’s possible only in the finals because of how the bracketa are made this year.. But who would pick in this hypothetical final?
@@AugustasSuliauskasUSA. Jamal Murray ain’t playing for Canada this year unfortunately, SGA ain’t gonna be enough
Thanks for the great analysis! USA have it all and should take the trophy! Watch out for Germany aswell ;)
I have them at #3 in my own personal power ranking. How your’s look like?
Haven't thought about that '19 team that finished 7th in a while (I tried to forget). Went back and checked their roster. On the surface, there's a lot of similarities to this team. There was a lot of young talent. I don't think their problem was lack of effort. But I saw Kemba Walker was the only true PG on the team. Tatum and others could run the offense and create, but right away, it seems this '23 team has a big upgrade at the 1 spot. Is Ant an upgrade over Donovan? Hard to say, but Mitchell never got his offense rolling in int'l ball. Did he not adjust to fewer minutes and fewer touches? Ant is a steamroller and a better defender too. JJJ is a clear upgrade over Miles Turner. Rest of the guys are pretty even on paper, but I see more versatility in this team. And Brunson has that X factor. But we'll see. The talent level is high around the world, even with the big names sitting out. Anything can happen in a single game elimination tourney.
I think the no defensive 3 sec in FIBA is hella underrated. You can tell team USA isn't familiar to it. That is why bigs like Gobert and Boban excel and not a liability on defense in FIBA comp because of that. The NBA should abolish the defensive 3 seconds violation. that would be interesting to say the least.
I love the augustas videos he's so good
I appreciate that a lot! Thank you
And it's his birthday today 🎂🎉
I’m going to be honest, this team is probably the reason Kerr is coaching the team. These aren’t the B team players. These are pretty clearly handpicked players. If you look at their NBA careers, I’ll say this about them - they’re easy to roster, are highly adaptable, and can fill a lot of different roles on their teams. People are saying that Ant-Man is the best player on this team, but I would say Halliburton and Brunson work so well as the beating heart of the team in their roles. I think Kerr likes coaching this team much more than he would a team with already established superstars, if I may be honest. It’s more rewarding for him, in it’s own right.
Very interesting, we will see what they’re capable of when everybody is giving 100%
Real tournament separates boys from men, or at least, that's how they say it. Looking forward to the World Cup
They are team USA... don't think for a second they are not getting 100% from every team they play, any game they play. All they see is the USA on the jersey. Trust me, all players have pride... you can't shake that.
Secondary objective of running a fastbreak after a basket is also to maximize the number of possessions , statistically its significant to the more talented/better team , just as less talented teams want to slow the game down.
What I really like about this squad is that they all have something to prove, they’re young and hungry to win, I see no divas or egos this time around.
Winning it all? Possibly, USA is so talented that they can build 5-8 different teams with a shot at a medal.
But this squad is at least making semis, other teams are really good too and everyone is always hyped about playing and beating USA
Good points..USA must utilise those advantage they have like their athleticism coz of the reduced size of the court I think the biggest problem that the USA will face is when a defense oriented team who knows to use the size of the court coz in a FIBA rules game the spacing is much lesser since you point that the US team is not known for the half court offense hopefully they will adjust to that as they go deeper into the tournament coz the game will be tighter specially on the defensive end..half court set up plays will be the factor
and if i remember, please do correct me if i'm wrong
zone defense are completely legal in fiba rules so that's one of challenge that usa must to face
@@muhammadrizkisatria5059 you are right..zone defense is allowed in a FIBA games that’s why if a team know how to use the zone defense it will be a nightmare for opposing teams coz the space will be much tighter..specially those team that plays trap defense..
The channel has some of the most interesting discussion of basketball on the internet ❤
They look pretty good, thought your analysis was well delivered.
Thanks a lot! What’s your top 5 teams in a power ranking before tourney?
If this young team perform above expectations under Fiba conditions I wonder how Kerr will treat Olympic selection when the all stars come crawling out of the woodwork for their obligatory gold medal 🥇 I hope Australia gets a chance to play this USA team in this tournament
Good video
Thank you
10 days later, France didn't even make it past the group stage
Why'd you do steve dirty with that thumbnail 😂
Even if they don't win it all at the WBC, this gives these young players valuable international experience which can carry over to the Olympics. It's all about establishing a lineage of players experienced in the international style of play.
But who of these guys can be on the team next year? When probably all of the big names commit
@@AugustasSuliauskas Ant? Jalen? AR? Paolo? Maybe JJJ? They're next in line for sure. The others can be at the select team. We'll see how it goes.
Whether they win or not it's clear that the future of the NBA is bright in the hands of these young stars
So pumped for the World Cup!
It’s been exciting Spain vs Canada was great Us vs Germany was great. And Lativa vs Germany was a classic to
Latvia will give u most of nightmares....
Vid on Canada they tearing it up
Just wondering… in soccer, all the stars were heartbroken if not selected for international teams. It feels like playing for their flag is the pinnacle of their carrer. Does it happen in basketball too? Particularly USA, since I dont see any protest from other stars when not selected for this event (I mean where is Durant, Curry, etc?)
No it doesn’t because winning fiba holds zero importance to us in america and holds no weight. It’s not a big deal for america to win it
It's not super important like the Olympics. All the starts play Olympics but FIBA is more young players who often become stars later in their career
Has USA learnt? First cut - Fortis travelling against Spain with 4 steps 😂
It’s a very unselfish team that’s willing to give it all in both sides of the court. I’m not sure yet how they will finish, but they might be a very good team overall.
Where all the Europeans now who say Americans can’t play defense ?
I believe that USA will go for gold 🥇
They have great chemistry and powerfully players. France in their good day maybe can beat them. All the other teams look average or bad against this USA team...
There seems to be a pattern where the young up and coming talents participating in FIBA turn out to be the next generation of superstars in the NBA of the next season, young LeBron, 2010 Durant, 2014 Curry.
There is one issue that everyone always tend to leave out . specialy in olympic games . and to be more precise leave usa teams and players out .
will anyone ever check them up for dopping ? Because lets face it . with the amound of games these guys have every years , the short rest period between games , you will need to take supplements of all kinds , good/legal or bad/no legal . The human body can not keep up with these tempos that long duration of time ,year after year after year .
As always the best teaching short videos !
Russia got banned from the Olympics. If america was doing something they would have been caught by now. Stop being weird.
4:38 I don't really like this USA team but haven't they already proved they are good enough after beating not only Slovenia but also a stacked and veteran Spain team?
I agree,Luka is what makes Slovenia tough to beat, without him they’re basically food to team USA 🥴
@@warleyonwednesdays2286 What about Spain?
@@Miranda0752 Spain is a problem, they gave team USA a run for their money last game but they can also be beat. Of all of them I want to see how well Germany does against us because they’ve been pretty good so far
All i ask is for US nba fans to start respecting european basketball
They never watch it but they always try to talk shit
The way the team came back in friendly against Germany was nice. And, yes, deflections were very important there. I just hope refs can keep up with US pace and control the game equally for both sides. In the past, US team was so fast, FIBA refs looked like viewers/fans ;) letting go loads of travel.
this team is soooo good together
Can't wait to see them vs Germany tonight. They are one of my sleeper picks to challenge for gold, so it's going to be a great matchup today
The US team doesn't care about the FIBA World Cup because their players don't have that patriotic love the other teams have. If 7th place is the worst result they had in this competition, it speaks volume about their power over the other countries. The US team could easily make a team of at least 10 elite players while I don't think any other team can gather more than 3. The fact that they don't do it gives the tournament a balanced chance for other teams to win it, otherwise, no one would like to see them strutting to a championship with 150-70 wins every game.
I know there are 2 or 3 teams that can pose a threat, but let's be real, they are miles over the rest of the world and the past results are proof of it. They've won every Olympic gold since 1992 with the exception of 2004; 2010 and 2014 FIBA WC, most of them being blowouts.
Their only mistake was their best players not caring enough to come play.
The speed they play at, Steve Kerr 😂 we play way for 8 years now. The motto that always work, get them tired.
No love for Thyrese Halliburton? :(( He's my favourite up and coming NBA player
Great great player, will be a major key in this tournament. Loved how he pushes the ball, ignites the ball movement, makes the ball arrive to the right time at the right moment while doing it with a bit of flair
Im not that optimistic, I think lithuania (already beaten them), germany, even canada will beat them, and perhaps they wont go past quarterfinals
Well I need you for betting purposes lol I would had made some money from your comment if I’ve known
i wanna see steph dame and kd light it up from half court
USA will CRUSH Slovenia and Luka. And I'm from Slovenia. Our roster is SUPER thin this tournament.
What’s being missed by the video creator is that even when the US lost to France it was due to France having athletes. Most likely if the US loses again it will be to a team like Canada. Even the the European teams the last decade a either signing foreigner players or digging into their countries minority group to get athletes. Look at the demographics of the Euro teams in fiba the last decade.
I know what you mean but in the end a tournament's a tournament - no excuses for the results you get, especially since USA basketball is so insanely stacked 3rd or 4th team USA would still be competitive, or even dominant in international competition.
So in the end if Serbia loses they should not make excuses for not having Jokic, or Greece with Giannis, same for the US: your team is the team that is on the field, not some hypothetical world class superstar chilling in the Carribean on a boat.
My thing is, the rest of the world takes FIBA way more seriously than the US and the US still finishes top 3-5 most of the time usually with players not even in their prime yet. Most of the US FIBA teams have 2nd-5th year players. So players not in their prime or just entering it. It’s why we typically destroy in the Olympics.
Hey BasketNews, what do you think of the USA making a team out of FIBA players?
Anyone can win in the NBA. Its only entertainment
0:38 The top NBA players refusing to play in World Cup has little to do with the fact that there is Olympics next year. It is because they are afraid of injury. They will very likely refuse to play next year as well for the very same reason. We saw this situation multiple times before.
Gold is a big deal though. You'll get a few more stars although yes some will absolutely sit out
Mhm, Olympics just mean more to USA athletes. Just compare the rosters of the World Cup to who comes to Olympics. I believe next year we'll see some of the biggest names as well
@@AugustasSuliauskas That's true. Not only to the US athletes, but also for the US public in general, the Olympics matter as opposed to the World Cup. Yet, NBA contracts are much more important for them. So I think only some of the top NBA stars who will be invited (much lower than 50%) will accept to play next year. Usually, if a few top among the top leads the way, the others follow. James' or Curry's participation would mean a lot (Durant, not that much as his participation is used to). Yet, it might be also interpreted as signs of upcoming retirement than a care for playing for national colors.
I don't see why USA is a questionable team while Canada is considered a dark horse when it's basically the same (bunch of NBA guys put together) composition like USA roster-wise. Anyway, I personally think Germany will be the surprise team on this event.
Oh yeah everybody is sleeping on dennis schroeder and germany
@@SplinterCataloguewe’ll see

All sports books has USA favorites to win the world cup. Who cares what talking heads say on stupid ESPN shows
Because the US has a more talented roster, even if they are composed in a similar way.
JJ Jr.
Not sure they have. They at least are trying a different approach now, and sending a team instead of a list of stars but this team also barely beat Team germany last night. If the german team had continued their gameplan like they did for 3.5 quarters, the americans would probably already be back to crisis mode by now.
hey
I mean they did win gold two years ago...
USA vs Philippines in the gold medal matchup make it happen
Thats USAMNT they always sending young guys to fiba world cup but in olympics many super stars players go to Olympics.
Ant Man Reaves Haliburt 🔥
In short: Anthony Edwards is americas saviour
Only Canada can stop'em.
But do canadians have FIBA experience, you're talking about?
So actually USA will be golden
True only Canada and France because they have the athletes. That is what has changed that no one wants to talk about when it comes to international Gina ball. The demographics have changed when you look at who is playing on the court. Canada and France actually look and play like American teams. In American football they say you need athletes to beat athletes.
France and Canada understand that. Also helps that they have the diverse population to pull from.
@@PA-zt6xu hmm..
Good breakdown but i think they are walking machines and that gives them unfair advantage.
They are still underestimating Spain
Am I wrong to want this team to also be the Olympic team as well? 🥴
They are really bad at collective defense
I believe this team USA could actually crush it in the league still
USA has been disrespecting the World Cup and other teams ever since.
Secret is Anthony Edwards is a super star
World champions of what?!
I really wish to see Lonzo in this, he will dominate in defense. Just imagine a healthy lonzo.
Healthy Lonzo exists only in the imagination atp
I mean Haliburton is like a much better version of prime Lonzo with his vision
Man most of the powerhouse countries really don’t prioritize the FIBA WC tho. But the USA is kinda worse coz they just give it to the younger guys to shine
But they were beaten recently by Germany... What do you think about that?...
Why do folks always assume that US must win every time?? Yes, they are the favorites each time, but we have to acknowledge that the rest of the world is actually getting better, many international players are in the NBA, not to mention NBA reaches across the world now.. All these things set up for exciting games to watch...
Because team usa is still miles ahead in terms of talent, even if the world is getting closer. It really shows you how important chemistry is, how the rules have a big impact, and how important fit is when stars dont necessarily have skills that can scale back to a smaller role.
Jalen Brunson >>>>>
Euroleague Fanboys coping about the American C team with no chemistry prior to these warm ups being undefeated is hilarious.
I dont think USA can beat spain in BO7
But fiba is BO1 so anything is possible
1:05 Despite a large part of their squad being from NBA stars, Canada proved herself to be a joke in world arena multiple times. Even a laughing stock. So better rid with Canada there and insert Spain and Serbia.
If the USA play today with all the travels and flops they do in the NBA, I would watch just for the laughs.
I know best players often likes to skip World Cup but that 2019 team was especially bad just like 2004 USA olympics teams. Remember what happened after that ? USA gathered very best players in both 2008&2012 olympics. Well later not all best players arrived but still it was more than enough. Now this team is very similar to those 2010&2014 with young, hungry and very talented players. But the difference between these World Cups is that others teams is stronger and USA wont have easy time and I think it's even questionable if they gonna win it.
It seems that they haven't learnt
Past mistakes like their gold medals that they won?
Or the 7th place in the last World Cup in 2019?
@AugustasSuliauskas What about 2010 and 2014 world cup? Does that not count? To put things objectively it has been Spain and the US who has been winning the tournaments.

I disagree with you couple of players on usa team have experience on the u18 team.USA team will at least make it to the finals once they gain knowledge of the rules
Youth basketball is way different from the one played here. Of course, any experience is great, but it happened a long time ago + it was like 2 weeks of experience for them. But I do agree that USA will make it to the finals
@@AugustasSuliauskas huh the u18 team play against other countries u18 team at fiba World Cup so idk what you talking

i know we’re massive underdogs but we’ll shock some people… (i don’t believe they are underdogs, but i’m just following the story) lol
You know, how it goes. If USA don't bring LeBron, KD and other big names - everybody thinks they're the underdogs. I personally think that's misleading haha
Hearing your analysis leans positive towards the USA but just like everyone you have nickpick and lie about their mistakes as if other teams around the world is so perfect. I can pick holes in any argument you present me about the US. Because at the end of the day how many gold medals does the US have in comparison to the rest of the world? While the US has lost in the past, the level of playing at a high level for decades on end the rest of the world could ever dream of. Fun fact: Spain hasnt beaten the US since 2002 and even at their height on avg, the US has beaten them by double digits with MANY different lineups over the decades while Spain by and large has played the same players, this proves that Spain was never at the level nor ever will be at the level that the US is.
Where do I mention other teams are perfect? Every team has its' pros and cons, and in this video, we analyzed USA. I think it's objective to point out both and in the end, give my honest guess about whether the pros will outweigh the cons. That's all this video is about, nothing more.
@AugustasSuliauskas The title of your video says if TEAM USA can learn from their past mistakes? What mistakes? Team usa has only lost once in the past 13 years. You are correct and you didn't say that the other teams are perfect but if you look all over the internet TEAM USA is not analyzed objectively and most of the time, despite their accomplishments overall, gets negative press. You mentioned team first basketball and chemistry when you look back at the past tournaments, TEAM USA has beaten their opponents with different rosters while the world by and large again uses their same rosters tournament in and tournament out but you only want to point out TEAM USA's mistakes? It's very clear that the world is NOT on TEAM USA level when you look at the overall success. By the way, where are your videos about the world's weaknesses? I don't see you talking about them like you are talking about TEAM USA.
Slovenia 😂
Maybe 1/8
Didn't we just win the Olympics 😅😅 in 2020
2021
Of course in 2021! But you can't compare that roster with the one they have this year. KD, Dame, Booker, Draymond + many others. World Cup has a syndrome of the biggest stars declining because you have the Olympics coming up a year after. That complicates stuff for USA
@@AugustasSuliauskas Still even with our C team USA is by far the most talented team. However an upset is in the cards as this group of players is young and anything can happen in a single elimination game. If the team who advances was decided by a 7 game series this US team would destroy everyone
This is the world cup not olympics
@@josh35292That's the point, on paper it seems formidable but in reality we've seen such rosters struggling against the best European teams, probably due to numerous factors such as different rules, lacking motivation, being more mentally focused on the upcoming NBA season etc.
