@@michaelmackelvieGood content buddy, and I'm intrigued to see what you say in your next video, since I am prone to expressing how the NBA has become an exhibition league where rules aren't enforced correctly just for the sake of more offensive highlights and inflated stats for the star players
It was amazing to me to first watch extremly athletic American players consistently just standing still and ballwatch on defensive rebound after defensive rebound. And then hear respected NBA analysts explain it with "lack of size". Thanks for validating what I saw with my own, unqualified eyes. You have a sub!
The USA team also has 0 chemistry, the team practiced probably 5 times then went and played in the world league and got 3rd. Not too bad when you think about every other team in the league playing together all year long.
The Harden-ification of the NBA. Guys got their big bags, just want to launch threes not play D not bang for rebounds, then throw temper tantrums about not getting max extensions or championship teams not want to trade for them.
It’s a cultural thing. The US has developed that hero/idol culture around athletes to the point where it’s more profitable for players and clubs to have high profile players than a team that’s working in unity. It’s not rare to have teams win by having a few standout players beeing at their peak rather than the whole team performing as one. European teams are working like machines with every player beeing just a cog in them and while they ain’t superstars they sure do work smart because there isn’t really any game to gain as a basketball player in Europe.

@adytiohardianto5496 also american football key position requires a brain, and hockey has open substitution making the sport much less superstar oriented, baseball has a longer development cycle and has the batting order meaning mike trout or votto can't get their team above .500, let alone win a championship.
A fun quote you might enjoy... Vince Lombardi (yes famous football coach, however) early in his career of coaching he was asked to coach a basketball team. He spent an ungodly amount of time watching tape. Came out and said one thing, "we need to pass the ball to win."
Got into basketball last year watching the Nuggets. I couldn’t believe how different their play style was - focussing on a passing game that goes through Jokic - and how effective it was.

At 14:43 - that’s the logo of the UEFA Europa League which is an annual European soccer tournament. It’s a strange and obvious error to make given the speaker’s international experience. I mean, UEFA Europa League - it’s quite a different name to EuroLeague.
This Channel is a breath of fresh air, not just compared to other basketball oriented channels, but this kind of quality is rare on RUclips in general.
I think most US basketball culture is concerned with how they look doing something and individual success rather than actual team success. Look at how NBA players shoot free throws. Players who struggle with the traditional method could often times raise their percentages by going underhand or single hand but "it looks weird" and "isn't cool". That to me is pathetic and shows a mental fragility.
These passes are even more effective in national team basketball because teams are less organized to make the necessary quick and coordinated adjustments. Awesome analysis.
I average like almost 30 assists on 2k just moving the ball and hitting the open guy without trying to to too much. I know videogame doesn't exactly translate to reality, but if you use proportion it does make sense.
@@jamesp1289 True but eventually the coaches will need to embrace it again in this country or else their "Team" players will lose their edge in this country.
Team USA would still be going undefeated if the best American players actually cared about anything other than NBA rings. They don't care about medals.
@@woop6078Sounds like excuses. You win titles by assembling a team and winning the title by actually competing for it. You don't win by waving some spreadsheets arguing that you should have won. England has the most competitive football league but they've been rubbish at every world cup for the past decades. So for now the champions of world basketball are the Germans. Sucks to be you
The next all-star game should be USA vs. The World. Maybe the players could finally take the game seriously. It's been going down the drain the past few years.
The reason why they got away with it for so long is because Basketball were largely underdeveloped and unpopular everywhere else, so the US playing the way they are were never a problem considering they didn't have any challengers around. They got comfortable
So we in Europe believe in teamwork fundamentals, if you knowledge which play give you which advantage on court is primarily goal, and then talent comes when you need to use ur advantage against your opponent. Talent is just a +, if you learn how to play and know how the defense will react
I think so much of this stuff, specifically the ball reversals/cutting, explain why Jokic and the Nuggets have been so successful. Their entire offense is based around an unselfish 7 footer that is one of the best passers we've seen
Offenses based around intelligent, talented, willing passers are always the most efficient ones, because most of the shots will be open and wide open shots.
@@vamoneygroupless minutes per quarter, no defensive 3secs , basket interference and goal tending. It’s not the fault of the Americans players it’s HARD to play defense with those rules becaue it opens up the game way more offensively . That’s how jokic punishes smaller players , you have to have bigs, be able to switch 1-5 in mordern nba. It’s not easy
This puts to words my experience in playing hundreds of pickup games over the last 10 years. I have lost so many games despite having some of the "best" players in the gym on my team. So many guys think something like "im the best shooter here, why would i pass the ball to someone worse". I have won so many games with scrubs simply because everyone bought in to a team first approach; we had to pass the ball because none of us were good enough to win by playing with an individualistic style. If you simply find 4 other dudes that are willing to all play defense and move the ball unselfishly on offense you can lock down the gym for the whole night.
My man! We were the least intimidating team in our league, but we moved the ball and D’d up…credit coach for that. We were probably a .500 team without the culture and system he created!
“Move the ball and D up” Winning strategy in basically any team invasion sport. If you can shoot from outside and use both hands/feet, you’re fucking deadly. Loved this video, my favorite I’ve seen for ages because it spoke to me on a personal level. I’ll look to connect with you somewhere to see how far you’re going to expand with this idea, because I have at least 3-4 other video ideas that are related to this topic that branch into youth sports, the development systems like AAU, the NCAA, the nature of our sports leagues in the US vs the European structure, ease of integrating academy youth products into a professional first team with a ball movement approach vs an individual quality approach, the whole modern tactical shift in soccer because of Pep Guardiola, the Miracle on Ice, and Wayne Gretzky. I think there’s even a video to be made about the triangle offense. Real tactical nerds would want something on offensive structure to prevent transition in turnovers. I think there’s a lot to this. I live in Spain and part of the reason is their tactical vision of football (soccer) vs the rest of the world. I’m sure you saw it reflected in their basketball. I’ll try to find you on Twitter or LinkedIn. Love the channel man, looking forward to the next video.

I have little to zero interest in basketball but the way you told the story was fantastic. Couldn't believe how few subscribers you have compared with the production value!
The selection system is better in almost every sport in Europe. From the age of 12, you can join a boarding school for training to study and prepare for your future career. At 15, you can sign your first professional contract if you are skilled enough. Players in Europe therefore reach maturity earlier because they have been exposed to the professional world at a much younger age.
We also have sporting clubs everywhere and are not school related. I played football in Nova Scotia, the only real football league was/is their college league, which is/was trash. USA is similar. My hometown in Germany probably has more basketball teams than an equivalent Merican city. Assumption here, but that what Merica feels like. They would rather build fast food chains and pointless roads than focus on their health.
I can't properly articulate how much this video satisfies my interests in sports and science - 12/10 Video - Continue this great work! *Just one small hint, the Europa League logo shown at 14:54 is actually for a football (soccer) tournament with the same name, not the basketball europa league
You're absolutely right, that was the UEFA logo for the second tier club football competition. The Europa League. The EuroLeague logo has a basketball hanging above a net made of stars.
This is not exactly related to the video, but your thoughts on team USA makes me think about why the Philippines is perennially poor in international basketball tournaments. Many attribute it to a lack of size, but in reality, it is truly about the style of play. Every Pinoy kid wants to iso and like in the NBA, and the inferior quality of coaching encourages them to do it in the national league, the PBA. While that style of play may work in against against inferior Asian competition, it's clear it doesn't work against higher quality European and North American teams. That graph you showed where PH was second last in ball reversals coupled with their stinker performance in the tournament was all the proof I needed to make the connection. I believe if Gilas adopted a more European style of play they could see much more success in the tournament. Excellent video btw.
I think lack of size did plague Gilas for a very long time not until recently, but I do agree that they should adopt a more european basketball style since now we have evidence that that's what we need, Tab Baldwin proved that already. anyway, thats all.
The Philippines doesn't even have quarter of the talent the US does so that makes it even more miserable, always ending up close to dead last in these competitions. Shit's embarrassing
The ball movement was one the reasons why I fell in love with the 2014 Spurs. Such a beautiful execution on and off the ball, waiting for the right moment. It was such a amzing thing to watch (at least as a Euro-Basket fan). No flashy spproaches, almost all fundamentals
Hi, i'm from Lithuania. Good video but i don't agree when you say that only Valančiūnas is nba level player because we have Donatas Motiejūnas, until his serious back problems he was a starting center in harden's houston rockets. Also we have Rokas Jokūbaitis who in one of the best team in Europe - Barcelona. He is two time Euroleague young player and New York Nicks have drafted him and he may come to New York when his contract with Barca is over. There is Mindaugas Kuzminskas who played in knicks and Ignas Brazdeikis who played in Orlando magic and now he is playing in Euroleague's vicechampions Olympiacos. Alright we didn't have 4 or 5 key players includins all nba player Domantas Sabonis but this team was strong and i think few guys could be a roll players in nba. Good video, keep going!!!!
There’s a reason why the Spurs were so successful for so long. Euro guys & Timmy D that didn’t play for stardom, they played to win the game. Banking a midrange shot in isn’t going to get the fanfare, but it was extremely productive. Pop had a system & the team was a force.
Thank you this guy leaves that out just like the money ball movie this guy talked about. Let out A's baseball team had 3 of best pitcher's in the league. Let's see his soccer philosophy this summer paris Olympics. With a 1st time ever team of steph Curry, LeBron, K.D? Joel Embid. I hope he bets on Germany if there is a rematch.
@vijayadhari8717 I get his point . Duncan made pop's system come alive being self less. But only having a player like Duncan can that happen. American basketball isn't good because of system or philosophy. But TALENT over everything is the truth. Wooden and high post offensive. Phil Jackson Triangle offense. All look great with Great American took teir TALENT without it phil & Pop haven't been the same. Larry Brown in the Olympics with young Wade, Melo & LeBron on the Bench was only pro team to not win Gold medal! Larry Brown motto "play the right way" was crap ! Without the talent on the floor.

Here's my roster of LeBron's "Dream"-Team: Bron, AD, KD, Mitchell, Dame, Steph, Book, Zion, Ja, Ant, Haliburton, and, of course, that great American, Embiid. But when it comes the development of the tacktics of the game Ajax with Rinus Michel and Johan Cruyff created total football that is the basis the modarnd football almost all teams play to day. The Italians is also important with their defensive dicipline. We should also bring in Bielsa and his extreeme high intencity style. When we look at it Brazil have been a back water when it comes to tacktical inovations of football but you also created the most wonderful induvidal players. Ye Messi is the goat but Ronaldinho is the most entertaining player ever of any sport and no one is even close.
It's less so other teams caught up, but Brazil has been losing grip of their traditional identity that made them the undisputed kings in the first place. Like Germany, they have been trying too hard to replicate other brands and philosophies that worked for other teams which hurt them more than helped.
Really nice video. FWIW, many of us growing up outside the USA learning to play basketball were told early on: “you’re not 6’6” with a 40 inch vertical so you’re gonna have to learn how to play”. Getting repeated good looks through ball and body movement and adherence to a well-drilled system was the way. 2 hour practices repeating one play over and over to learn all the options was normal. But even in Australia we saw kids who were excellent athletes that could win often enough that way that they didn’t have to learn the game to the same degree. And some kids that should have gone on to be pro didn’t because they failed to develop sufficiently to compete at the next level. I feel what you are describing is a version of this same problem for guys that actually went pro. It’s learning the game and what it takes to win.
Both Kerr and Brown have been under Coach Pop's wing too, and the Spurs were definitely THE international team of their time. I wonder how many ball reversals that 2014 team did per game 😮
It actually started with the 2011 Mavericks. It's shocking to me how often that team gets overlooked, when they are literally the ones who ushered in the modern style of the NBA. Before the Mavericks, it was conventional wisdom that championships were won in the paint instead of on the perimeter.

By far the best RUclips video I have seen in years. As a sports coaching lecturer out in the UK and an avid basketball fan, I am going to send all my students here to understand how to evaluate performances!
Happens in many sports. A team is or believes it is the best in the world, discovers it's no longer true, then responds by doubling down on how they used to play the game instead of moving on.
Happens in maybe 2 or 3 sports at best. I will apologize for my lack of ability to recognize and/or reason with hyperbole if that was your intent. To be hyperbolic? Now maybe you meant to say it happens to many teams in every sport you currently observe, which is not that many. Either that or my autistic tendencies are tender tonight.
@@Chewy_GarageBandDad Off the top of my head other than basketball it happens in soccer, volleyball, and cricket. Arguably add track and field if you consider national teams as a whole and state sponsored drug use as a way of playing the game.
Michael put it clearly, this sport is chaotic in so many ways and he's answered some of my curiosities as to why I've been obsessed since only last season. The points he made about player valuation and ego versus a coach's presence as a coach was such an enlightening point. And this being something specific to American basketball makes so much sense, and I haven't even dug into the regulations and level of play in the rest of the world for this sport.
Great video. I’m not a huge basketball fan myself, but whenever I do watch this baffles me somewhat. The way defenses are static or obvious passes are overlooked in favor of more difficult shots.
I’ve never seen any of your videos nor heard of your channel, but thank god I found this channel because this is lowkey top3 basketball analysis videos I’ve ever seen
I’ve been saying this for years, NBA players, specially those from the USA, don’t box out or rebound unless the ball falls on their head. Most teams don’t play a “movement offense”, and too many players are just ball watchers with terrible basics, which they try to make up for with physical superiority, but it’s not enough anymore.
I laugh when the Gen-Z say this is the most skilled era of the NBA. I see so many players who can't bring the ball up from the back court. I see so many players who can't create their own shot. So many big men without a post up game. So many players who don't box out. The plays are mostly pick & roll then pass to a corner three. People just parrot hot takes without analyzing the game.
@@One.Zero.One101 90s basketball ain't better buddy, how many of those players would struggle to defend with tighter rules and extra spacing. It's not just 3pt shooting and pick n roll, you clearly are the parrot.

I've always wondered how the Spanish National team could have fared as an NBA team. When they had the Gasol brothers, Ibaka, Rubio, Fernandez and more.
If Yugoslavia never fell apart, Team USA would've had bigger problems than the Spanish national team. Players like Jokić, Luka, Bogdan and Bojan Bogdanović, Vučević, Dragić, etc. would play together in the nt. The last Yugoslav team was the most dominant European team ever, with 4 Hall of Famers (Dražen Petrović, Vlade Divac, Toni Kukoč, Dino Radja) and at least 5 more outstanding players, but Yugoslavia collapsed in 1991 - a year before the Barcelona Olympics. Original Dream Team would win, but it would be much more interesting game.
@youcanteverknowagain1788looks like u didn't watch this video, they weren't the leads on their teams in NBA or even EURO, but they played together in a certain systems and in a different way, from their childhood. Similar age, same generation, serious quality, no star, all playing for one another. It would be a hell of a game !!!
@youcanteverknowagain1788a team of idiots won't win just because they have Michael Jordan leading the team. I'd take a team that consists of a couple of really solid players, rather than a team of average players + one legendary player.
in NBa they won't. Cause u not playing B.Ball, u just advertise top stars, and sell their stories. All stars get advantage from teams, the plays will cather to their egos and refs will give them more fouls.@youcanteverknowagain1788
The response to Prozingas by the Knicks showed the ignorance US fans had to international players. It was assumed that if you did not go through the American college system, you were automatically inferior.
Karma for acting like he was too good for certain teams during workouts. It’s taken that dude half a decade to play to 40% of what he was projected to be. What a failure of a career
This tracks so well with what my coaches in both school and college have always said. They always INSIST on fundamentals. There's a reason my current coach likes watching Euroleague a lot more than the NBA. Olympics is going to be fascinating this year.
You have well earned my subscription. The production you put into your videos is astounding. I am impressed with your level of research. Reversing the ball is a simple tactic that opens many opportunities. I never played High School level, I’m just a fan of the game. This video was very educational.
Fellow Oregonian, went to Lakeridge back in the 00s, and even refereed some Wilsonville games (frosh/JV) post graduation in the 2010s. Roche was a nice guy and would give me my kudos if I worked a good game even if Wilsonville lost or a number of calls went against them. Great video overall!
Potentially a future topic - the coaching market is massively inefficient...there are some incredible coaches at the HS level, and ludicrously bad coaches at the college and pro level (despite enormous pay gaps)...I was lucky to have the coach I had in high school.

Great video topic, scripting and editing. If I may share one of the best coaches I’ve seen Kirby Schepp mentioned this in one of his talks. That he observed with his teams that when you reverse the ball you score better. Needs to be more well known, there’s too many talented players being limited by poor strategy
Great analysis of the game , I totally agree with everything, moving the ball is the key to breaking down defences, and creates better shot opportunities. However i think you also miss one key element and one that is not so easy to define. Moving the ball involves the whole team , once the whole team becomes involved and invested in the game, it lifts their tempo and mood of each player, this then translates to how they defend , how they set ,how they rebound, how they compete, how quick they run, how aggressive they are and how they want to win. The whole team is invested in the performance no matter who scores the points.
Thoroughly shocked to see you have 12k subs. This is high quality content and I look forward to seeing your channel grow exponentially as people find you
Thanks for the great analysis! The editing is Vox level quality! I think the potential lack of media, ego, and the promotion of players in Europe compared to the NBA might be what helps these teams win on the world stage and also being committed to fundamentals, like what you said in the rebounding section with Ant. Keep it up! I would love to see more NBA videos!
It's also a factor that NBA analysis is the worst among any sport in the world. Stephen A. Smith, Skip Bayless, Kendrick Perkins, NFL players, they just say the most standard excuses. To fix the problem you must first admit that there's a problem.

this video is incredible. i watched your NFL draft video and was entertained; but this video earned a subscription. what an amazing analysis of the US’ performance this past summer. i know your channel’s main focus isn’t necessarily sports, but please continue with sports related content!
Honestly a major reason for their recent losses is the fact that they do not care about these competitions. Winning a world cup or a eurobasket is the dream for every european basketball player, i've seen countless videos of players saying that they'd rather win a gold medal than a NBA championship. Europeans value these games much more, for example, when Lithuania beat USA. The game was completely meaningless as both teams had already advanced to the next stage (losing that game would have honestly given Lithuania an easier road to the finals). Yet us Lithuanians celebrated that win to america as if we'd just won the championship. Being a small country, every Lithuanian around the world gathered to celebrate this win, even though it could have been seen as unnecessary. The Americans are expected to dominate every time they play, which i believe is a factor to their lack of trying on defence. As they seem to belive that their talent alone will win them the games. Which did work back in the day, but isn't enough any longer.
Yes I could I already sence what was coming for us when lithuania where in the same group as Mexico it amaze me they didn't rely on Jonas but made smart plays lithuania had players coming from all over the court they just didn't rely on their scorer and it's a so much smaller country compared to the US and Mexico but US where expected to Win it all
They prefer eurobasket or World Cup medals because they play with their national teams. Ask Yannis or Jokic and will say the same. NBA players believe their national championship and the ring are more valuable than a neck ribbon.
Great analysis, thanks for your hard work and the deep dive. In addition to things that you pointed out, international teams have more continuous and long-term preparation for tournaments like FIBA/Olympics. Many of these teams consist of players who have been playing together for years, very often since their youth/junior national team days. This long-term cohesion provides a significant advantage in terms of team chemistry and understanding on the court. That might sound like an excuse - and I guess it is - but it's hard to imagine a scrappy and cohesive actual NBA *team* that's primarily composed of American NBA players (think Miami Heat for the last few years) wouldn't fare much better than this team. I think they've tried to add more role-player types and that's a good move, but there's just not any kind of cohesion there. And props for calling Ant out.. for all the accolades he received for his offensive prowess (and he's amazing), that is unacceptable effort when you are representing your country on an international stage IMO.
Man, who are you? 😮 One of the best videos I've ever seen in absolute, not only about basketball. All that seasoned with the right humour 😄 Bravo!! 👏👏👏 Fantastic your sentences starting from 19:00 I'm practicing my English, and this has been very useful also for this purpose. About the matter, I totally agree. I would also add that there's also a lackage in individual fundamentals training. Thank you from Italy 🇮🇹 Subscribing is the least I can do 👍
Its actually insane you only have 16k subs, this content is extremely high quality. I was expecting around 150-250K. You're a gem and you're about to blow up for sure
Only remember the San Antonio Spurs champs. Dungan, Parker, Ginobili... and a lot of good good players. But they were boring, Duncan efficiency bored, Parker a small Frenchman, Ginobili an Argentinian 6th man. I see the Spurs plays, the skill of the pass, the intelligence in choosing the pass, the sublime elegance of the pass. Those guys played beautiful basketball, with little ego, with a lot of energy and world-class beauty.
Eventually you could put it down to the business philosophy. American professional leagues are first and foremost part of the entertainment industry, geared towards selling stars and offering an entertaining night out.
Wow, amazing video. Only mistake is that at 14:53 you used the logo for a European football (soccer) competition instead of the Basketball Euro League. Love the content though and you’ve gained a new subscriber
It seems to me that the small ball approach is being played so well in the world that the US is too fixed in size, speed, etc. The 2014 Spurs are a great example of a twist in how the NBA can be more competitive against teams who utilize passing more than 1v1s and screens
It was like that in old school football in England kick the ball long to a tall guy and shoot or head it in now its all technical and you have to be good with the ball at your feet and play out from the back. They forced academys to change in Germany, England and France. It's mainly what happens though when you have european teams who have to win and usa where you cant get relegated the coach loses his mind if you dont do what he says and you will be dropped.
@@keenanmyers8576 One of the two teams that beat the US and the team that won the World Championships, so... The point being "small ball" or European teams playing any specific "style" isn't the issue.
Amazing video, equal parts informative and entertaining. But I need to point out at 14:48 the logo opposing the NBA one on the chart is from UEFA Europa League, a soccer tournament, rather than EuroLeague Basketball.
In the 90s, the NBA sometimes moved the ball more, looking for the best shot, as the league was extremely defensive. Today with the spacing, the increase in pace and 3-pointers, the fight for offensive rebounds in the paint was neglected, because the rebounds lasted longer. Just as the search for the best shot gave way to the fastest shot. In FIBA the space is smaller, the physical contact is greater, so they need to move the ball to get good shots.
That's incredibly untrue and shows that you weren't watching basketball in the 90s, by far the most stagnant, incompetent, 1-on-1 era of basketball in league history.
@@keenannorris3309 I saw the 90s. And you might think the era was more stagnant, or whatever, but you can't change what happened. My description does not mean that one era is better than another. I just think the FIBA game these days is more similar to the 90s NBA. Today's NBA game prioritizes attack, fast pace, 3-pointers and defenders have little to do with the current defense rules. As a famous coach from the 90s said, you can see a Picasso in a truncated game. But others prefer open, fast-paced play.
@@carloscostajr5326 No, I can't change what happened in the 90s. I would if I could b/c the amount of 80-75 games that I sat through was truly mind-numbing. If that's what ball movement results in then I think it's a good thing that offensive basketball was completely revised. Honestly, though, there wasn't much ball and player movement by the mid/late-90s. Everybody was trying to play like MJ, or they just played through a low post center surrounded by 3-point shooters. Offensive basketball is 10x better now. Almost every starting 4 can shoot from 3 w/ consistency. Teams have three and four very strong ball handlers whereas in the 90s teams like the Knicks and Magic got to the finals w/ just one. I'll concede that defensive basketball isn't very good right now, mostly b/c of the rule changes, but also b/c offensive skill is through the roof. Videos like this irritate me b/c I've been watching the NBA since the 80s so I know that there have always been similar complaints about the NBA no matter the style of play: The players don't play defense, the players can't shoot, the players are low IQ, the players are lazy, etc. Most of it has more to do w/ latent racial tensions than w/ the sport itself, which just goes through stylistic changes every few years
@@keenannorris3309 From the paint with passes to 3pt shots and so on. This is a context from the mid to late 90s. But I will mention one thing, the defense, you ignore its beauty, the defensive rotations, the double and even triple defenses, the defensive bolts of the 90s. Teams had their own ways of trying to stop opponents, this dynamic still doesn't exist today, other than a zone and that NBA teams don't know how to win, because they don't look for mistakes but are conditioned to 3pts and layups executed in 5s, at least the less intelligent teams. I imagine they will come up with something better defensively for this era. Otherwise, soon some team will score 200pts in a game, turning the regular season into an all star game. In the 90s it was a kind of defensive arms race, but it's not the focus today. And wanting to be like Jordan didn't go well in the 90s, and the majority had irrelevant success, everyone wanted to be MJ but in the 2000s. And today many imitate Jordan or his imitators, being relevant to the game, they are Tatum, Durant , Edwards, Booker and so on.
About 30 to 40 years ago the rivalry between Garfield and Mercer Island high schools was really intense. Garfield, in Seattle's largely Black Central District, had a very individualistic approach and a lot of individually skilled players. Mercer Island, a largely Jewish suburb, did a lot of what we used to call "perimeter passing," to generate the open shot. They were often the two best teams in the area. If you live near Seattle and these teams still play each other (perhaps in a league championship?) you might enjoy attending a game. Thanks for an excellent video.
Solid presentation ! I wonder if the fact most international rosters don't change much year to year also plays a part in building team chemistry, whereas the U.S teams are almost always wildly different between each competition
I think this is massive and hugely overlooked. Let’s not forget who the coach of that FIBA team was… Steve Kerr. The coach that obviously understands the importance of ball movement, as demonstrated in the video. Just looking at the rosters for these international teams from this summer, last summer in the qualifiers, and back to the Olympics, a lot of them look very similar, while the US is a brand new team every time. It’s nearly impossible, even for the best coach in the NBA, to build a good offense in 1 week, and so the most obvious thing that suffers is passing and ball movement. I think that is why the US has only succeeded in the past when they “brute force” it and just send the “nukes,” because they are generally very experienced players who can simply overpower the other teams, even when the offense isn’t firing on all cylinders. Overall I like a lot of the points in the video, and American players and teams should be learning from international players, but I think everyone is overlooking this.
Thats crap. Sorry. Team serbia is changing from championship to championship massively but they keep the same stile of the game because its a TEAM sport. Your selfpromoting culture is destroying your bball.
@@bandaranaike268 I agree that the Serbian basketball school is among the greatest in the world, and produces way more elite basketball players per capita than basically any other countries. That said, every single member of the Serbia roster at the World Cup played in at least 1 FIBA qualifying game, most of them played in many. None of the US players played in any qualifying games. Now I’m not saying it’s an excuse, i think the fact that we can’t field a consistent team is evidence of a self promoting culture, but let’s not twist facts. Let’s also not forget that the US has won the last four Olympics and two FIBA world cups since 2000…
I attended a basketball camp in Decorah, Iowa at Luther College back in 2005-06 when I was a freshman in HS. ESPN Imternational Scouting Expert Fran Fraschilla came to speak at the camp. The subject of his speech: how Europe - and most the rest of the world - was teaching basketball in a MUCH BETTER way than we do in America and that America will soon start paying for it. Its been pretty cool to watch everything he said come true.
that method of basketball was also taught in the US way back when. but when the players started getting faster and stronger, some coach somewhere figured he could just fastbreak all the time and out score the other team.. ala Rudy Tomjanovich with the Houston Rockets or the Running Rebels of UNLV back in the '90's.
Instant subscribe. Having followed the whole debate for a while, this is the most well-thought out breakdown I've seen. I appreciate your candid introspective review of the situation, it's one that traditional American sports media seem to have a hard time with
Damn man, I'm really impressed by the quality of this video. This should be a premiere basketball channel! I'm gonna go watch more of your vids and I hope more are on the way
I literally just told a small group of 11 year old kids at a birthday party in a Rec Center about reversing your dribble, making the pass across the top of the key to reverse the play side of the Court. All the 11 year olds got it pretty quick.
Another gem, Mike! The typical NBA analysis on ESPN is sub-par at best -- this video blows them out of the water! I'm curious about Phil Jackson's legacy and how good he, and Tex Winter's Triangle offense, really was. Granted, it was a different NBA then but It'd be interesting to see if the Bulls (when Michael left to play baseball) were more efficient (possibly running more reversals?) as I think The Last Dance mentioned something to this effect. It'd also be interesting to see the efficiency numbers when Kukoc was on the floor. I wonder if we'd also see differences between the Shaq/Kobe Lakers v. Pau/Kobe as well. Anyways, this is fantastic analysis, Mike! And I hope the Bulls reached out to you to work in their analytics department. Looks like they're going to be stuck in mediocrity... again. Oh, and it's downright criminal why you don't have more subs -- watching your content is like hearing a great band in their early stages right before they blow up!

Finally someone elaborated on this. The way team USA approach basketball doesn't work anymore add to the fact that they're playing against teams who have played together for at least five years from the youth level.
@@rustyshackelford4224Unit cohesion and team chemistry. Longer you play with your team you know their moves, plays, strengths, weaknesses, positionings and you make faster plays because you save time in making those micro decisions
@Michael MacKelvie. really good analysis, just a small thing on 14:46 where it shows NBA vs UEFA Europa League. UEFA is football asociation, FIBA is what you are looking for in here. :)
This will probably be a very long one but: First of all, the whole point about missing players, most other teams were also missing players. Spain were missing Rubio, the MVP of the previous World Cup. Greece was missing Giannis and Kostas Antentokoumpo, our best player by a mile and our backup big, our two main point guards Kostas Sloukas and Nick Calathes, and Dinos Mytoglou, another one of our better players. Serbia was missing Nikola Jokic, and Vasilje Micic, two of their three best players, Milos Teodosic, Nikola Kalinic, Nemanja Nedovic and Lucic. Lithuania was also missing players, including Sabonis, and Latvia were missing Porzingis. And these are just a few examples. Missing key players due to injury or them opting to rest is an unfortunate reality of international basketball. Another point is roster continuity. Most countries have a limited pool of players to pick from, so they always play with a very similar roster. Team USA on the other hand has a completely different roster every new tournament. Another point is importance placed on international tournaments. I'll talk about European teams in particular because I don't really know how people in the rest of the world think. So, in the USA, the NBA is the end all be all. The international competitions are just an afterthought, a side quest. For Europe, International competitions are the top achievement possible. This is true for every sport. Giannis won the NBA title and here in Greece we celebrated. But if he wins anything with the National Team, it will be more like a national holiday. The US national team seems to value different tournaments differently. In the Americup, theu send G leaguers, in the World Cup they send good NBA players and some stars and in the Olympics they send the best they have. This isn't true for European national teams. They'll send their best players in every single competition, EuroBasket, World Cup and Olympics and they are all really valued. And they're really competitive too. In the EuroBasket alone, you have Spain, France, Italy, Serbia, Greece, Slovenia and Germany as potential winners, with more teams that can make an upset like Poland, Turkey, Czech Republic etc.
All your points are valid except the point about missing players. The U.S will field an entirely different team that is MUCH better. The U.S sent it's C-team. When the U.S sends it's A-team then it can be a real conversation.
@@rogelioatempa1115 missing good players is way worse for smaller countries than the USA. You were missing your best, yes, but your replacements were also really good. Most of the players that were there for team USA are top 100 players in the world. Curry is at least a top 5 player, he didn't play, but Jalen Brunson played and he's in the top 50. Durant didn't play, but Bridges was there and he's also a top 50 player. But for Greece, Giannis didn't play, arguably even the best player in the world, definitely in the top 5, and his replacement probably isn't even in the top 1000 players. So for us, missing Giannis probably hurt equally to the US team missing multiple great players, because for the US the replacements are also really good and on a similar level while our replacements are a huge downgrade.

I grew up in Russia and Serbia before moving to USA and have always preferred the European style of basketball that places the team above all else. Probably because my favorite sport is hockey, and even in the NHL that is the norm for every team. It is very anti-climactic to go from watching the best fans in the world at EuroLeague games with players giving their all to those fans, to watching a dead arena at the average NBA game with only one or two players on each team playing defense. I really think the NBA could benefit from a massive reduction in the number of regular season games and some rule changes, maybe even making the court FIBA size if we are being radical, and I think the actual basketball would improve greatly. But it has to also start from youth teams up. Watching maybe high school/AAU teams is like watching an entirely different sport than basketball.
Good video, but some things. The Euroleague logo you used is the Europa League, basically Champions League second tier in football soccer. The second thing is against the argument "the best players play here", it doesn't mean you are the best, in soccer the english premier league is considered the best league, as they have the mos money, with two sheik owned teams, but England has suffered internationaly, they have reached a final 2 times in their history, a world cup which they won, and last eurocup, which they lost. Same argument can be made with the Saudi League, as more and more talents go there for the money, it doesn't mean its the best. And lastly, the entire thing that is happening in basketball just happened in baseball a few years back. They made the argument that if they brought their best team they wouldn't loose, so they did that last wc, Mookie Bets, Aaron Judge, Will Smith, you name them, that team lost to Japan and Mexico, the ladder almost gets the mercy rule, against "the best team", both teams with basically half the team playing in the local league, and it will happen next FIBA wc, when they bring the nukes, someones gonna beat them. Greetings from Mexico, and again, great video!
Your argument works in the futbol world but not the basketball world. USA is still King Until another country or countries prove otherwise. For another country to be king, they will need a majority of their best players to be in the nba or have a league that rivals nba and produce most of the best players that beat usa in competitions consistently and decisively.
@@NewEarthSonNah, for the moment the “kings” are Germany (World Champions) and the US (Olympic Champions). You don't need to have the majority of players in the NBA to be the best team, this World Cup has clearly shown that. Heck, the NBA defensive player of the year got humiliated by a player playing in Lithuania’s 2nd division.

The pacing of this video is very slow, and the comedy bits are annoying as they only waste more time.
It was amazing to me to first watch extremly athletic American players consistently just standing still and ballwatch on defensive rebound after defensive rebound. And then hear respected NBA analysts explain it with "lack of size".
Thanks for validating what I saw with my own, unqualified eyes. You have a sub!
You just pretty much explained Jaylen Brown on D in the ECF😂
The USA team also has 0 chemistry, the team practiced probably 5 times then went and played in the world league and got 3rd. Not too bad when you think about every other team in the league playing together all year long.
Now you know how full of shit media is.
The Harden-ification of the NBA. Guys got their big bags, just want to launch threes not play D not bang for rebounds, then throw temper tantrums about not getting max extensions or championship teams not want to trade for them.

The lack of iq and actual team basketball in the nba is crazy. Most people don’t see this. Amazing video. Makes me feel way more sane.
It's the Murican way. ;)

@adytiohardianto5496 also american football key position requires a brain, and hockey has open substitution making the sport much less superstar oriented, baseball has a longer development cycle and has the batting order meaning mike trout or votto can't get their team above .500, let alone win a championship.

Man. The writing, editing, presentation, balance of jokes/seriousness, and analysis in these vids is top notch.

Basketball is similar to another sport Soccer. Europeans value tactics. American sports value the individual.
Symptom of extreme capitalism.
So when the individuals improve they already have an advantage with teamwork.
So why does US lose in tennis and golf if it values the individual so much?
I think so much of this stuff, specifically the ball reversals/cutting, explain why Jokic and the Nuggets have been so successful. Their entire offense is based around an unselfish 7 footer that is one of the best passers we've seen
Offenses based around intelligent, talented, willing passers are always the most efficient ones, because most of the shots will be open and wide open shots.
He's definitely not 7 feet. The NBA definitely doesn't have defense. Otherwise, how come fiba usa doesn't score 120 every game.

Exactly my experience in pick up hoop.

And even if they don‘t make the cut, they‘ll have a degree and are able to start a different career.

Well said
I think lack of size did plague Gilas for a very long time not until recently, but I do agree that they should adopt a more european basketball style since now we have evidence that that's what we need, Tab Baldwin proved that already. anyway, thats all.

Happens in many sports. A team is or believes it is the best in the world, discovers it's no longer true, then responds by doubling down on how they used to play the game instead of moving on.
The NBA teams are legitimately better still.

Most teams don’t play a “movement offense”, and too many players are just ball watchers with terrible basics, which they try to make up for with physical superiority, but it’s not enough anymore.
once the NBA rules begin to change, I feel it will force NBA player to adapt. The great ones will adapt, the frauds will not
I laugh when the Gen-Z say this is the most skilled era of the NBA. I see so many players who can't bring the ball up from the back court. I see so many players who can't create their own shot. So many big men without a post up game. So many players who don't box out. The plays are mostly pick & roll then pass to a corner three. People just parrot hot takes without analyzing the game.

The whole team is invested in the performance no matter who scores the points.

this video is incredible. i watched your NFL draft video and was entertained; but this video earned a subscription. what an amazing analysis of the US’ performance this past summer. i know your channel’s main focus isn’t necessarily sports, but please continue with sports related content!

The U.S. definitely isn't fixated on size. Almost all the top bigs in the NBA are Europeans, Africans, etc.
Nothing to do with small ball. Like four of five starters for Germany are 6'10" or above. The difference is they aren't just big.

Amazing video, equal parts informative and entertaining. But I need to point out at 14:48 the logo opposing the NBA one on the chart is from UEFA Europa League, a soccer tournament, rather than EuroLeague Basketball.
hahaha I was looking for this comment before typing in myself :D

I feel like The Duncan Spurs were essentially a top tier EU team dropped in the NBA and you can clearly tell that they can win
Elaborate please
Solid presentation !
I wonder if the fact most international rosters don't change much year to year also plays a part in building team chemistry, whereas the U.S teams are almost always wildly different between each competition
Possibly! Hard to measure though…

Diving deeper into what actually is making the ball go in or not go in the hoop instead of sensational opinions or claims about player mentality or clutch factor.
Will Smith! The man himself...an honor to get a comment from you. Will listen to anything you say, and unquestionably keep your wife's name out of my mouth.
Finally someone elaborated on this. The way team USA approach basketball doesn't work anymore add to the fact that they're playing against teams who have played together for at least five years from the youth level.
Why does that last point matter?

@Michael MacKelvie. really good analysis, just a small thing on 14:46 where it shows NBA vs UEFA Europa League. UEFA is football asociation, FIBA is what you are looking for in here. :)
This will probably be a very long one but:
First of all, the whole point about missing players, most other teams were also missing players.
Canada was also missing Jamal Murray, Andrew Wiggins, Chris Boucher, Brandon Clarke who at least 3 would have started for them
All your points are valid except the point about missing players.

WHOA, damn bro, this is awesome! Your sports data content like the NFL draft one is so good!! Keep doing these sports content stuff!
Thanks Eddie! Big sports fan too…more to come.
Oh my goodness! You played for Wilsonville High School. I know that gym. That was my school too! 😂 Your videos are great! I would love to connect, I am now an AP Stats teacher in California and have been raving about your sport analytics videos.😂
Amazing work, Robbie v The World! Impressive breakdown! Love the analytical approach you take in your videos combined with really fun, slick production value (graphics, videos, skits)... Highlights both your intelligence and your creativity. Yet, it's the insights that carry the day. Bravo!
Watching maybe high school/AAU teams is like watching an entirely different sport than basketball.
no way nba is king for a reason
@@elvangulley3210 Not in terms of atmosphere. You would get picked apart in Turkey, Greece or Serbia sitting in the crowd.
I know nothing about basketball but this quality of content made me subscribe.
Heck, the NBA defensive player of the year got humiliated by a player playing in Lithuania’s 2nd division.
nice content. like the video and suscribe. do you have any data about the 2013-2014 spurs? i think that team was the perfect example of succes in the nba with the things you are describing
