Does Greece have any exhibition games before the Olympics?
I think toliopoulos needs some credits also, he scored about 20 points at the last 2 games without missing any shot. Great analysis one more tme!!

Great strategy!
This is precisely what Itoudis miserably failed to pass on the team. Its the first time in years that I see Giannis being utilized so well. Let's hope for the best.
The key is to make 3 pt open spaces
@@gregwaste2594itoudis is a 40m + coach and onky kniw with top players to play.Big dumbster and always complains when he loses. He is never responsiboe for defeat others are
If you remember the last recent years, this was definitely a beautiful display of basketball. Our eyes were hurting seeing Giannis forcing attempts with 3 players locked on him while the rest of the offense was sitting around the arc frozen.
Exactly, Spanoulis actually uses every player to his fullest instead of just feeding the ball to Giannis and expecting everything from him
They need to get Spanoulis to Milwaukee, teach the Americans some proper basketball. This is the best version of our national team ever since coach Giannakis' and the world cup epic.
There is no such thing as proper basketball. I think the Europeans should accept that the talent is so high in the NBA that fewer actions are needed to get a basket.
@@noname-xz2nsIf you actually watch the defense the greeks are playing right now and do not see the insane gap in quality to the defense that Milwaukee played last season then…
The NBA is for show, its like a top quality circus. They would send Spanoulis packing in less than a month
@@noname-xz2ns offensive talent 100% what about defensive talent? what about defence in general?
@@noname-xz2ns Sure the talent gap is enormous.. But outside NBA , the field is smaller, defence is tighter .So , a well orchestrated offense needs MORE actions. We ll see how many points 'dreamteam' USA can score in olympics per match ..
My predition for Spanoulis is that except a Euroleague legend, will become a coach Legend!
Intelligence above all!
Exactly! Coach job fits him so well!!
Papagiannis sprint at 6:18 is at least impressive for a guy his size.
The problem with Greek teams is that they never have all pieces set everytime one piece is missed. For examble I would argue that in the previous eurobasket Greece had the most complete roster with Sloukas, Calathes, Papagiannis, Antetokoubros etc and still missed a key player like Mitoglou a heavy 4 and great 3point shooter that would have made the difference against Germany. Greece is also very unlucky that Germany got so hot handed in this game, if Germany had the 3 point percentage that had in the final with Spain (to be realistic we have to admit that Spain played better defense than Greece but Germany was also tired after the game with Greece) Greece would have taken the title (it finished 5th).
This year we have a great defensive team, we arguably play the greatest defense we played the last 15 years or so, but we are missing scoring power, ability that Sloukas could provide but he is missing due to injury. I think this will be the biggest headache of Spanoulis how we find a consistent 3point scorer that will score even on a bad day of some other players, if he somehow manages to find a consistent play system and scorer (for examble Toliopoulos) then Greece is a medal contender.
I loved that roster until Mitoglou got injured.. And I agree Sloukas would be huge for this team. Someone who can be a constant threat off the dribble in PnR. Extra level

I think indeed this is the best Greek team with Yiannis. I feel that previous coaches made plays especially designed to take advantage of Yiannis but Spanoulis integrates Yiannis to his vision for this team. As a result the game plan is more cohesive.
Of course it is the best team with Giannis. It is the first time that Giannis appears to be included in the team plan.
that's not true at all
Its all about team this time. Not Giannis and after the team. Spanoulis changed that
actually it's the FIRST TIME that we have a real team with him on the roster and not always running the same system "give a pass to Antentokoumpo". I take this as a trolling comment.
Complete bs, actually it's exactly the opposite... Itoudis expected everything from Giannis and we did horribly but Spanoulis' Greece is an actual team
@@kondoesroblox69420 actually with Croatia Antentokoumpo stayed on the bench on purpose for some minutes because Spanoulis wanted both Mitoglou and Papgiannis to stay on the 3p line and drag out Saric and Zubac to open up space inside
"I think the show is fantastic. You analyze things very seriously and very objectively. I wonder why there aren't more shows like this. Keep up the good work because, among other things, we also learn about basketball through your analyses. Well done!"
Since Sloukas is not going to be there, the squad environment is going to be fantastic! I have high hopes for this team
Sloukas is a ridiculusly good player though.. he led panathinaikos The king, back to it's throne.
Greece is going to be in the medals, mark my words.
Itoudis and other coaches of Greece tried to just have Giannis gather people around him and hope for free shots if he threw the ball to a free player. However, Spanoulis has usually 2 creative PG that look for free players before Giannis gets the ball. And Papagiannis is given more freedom to stay far away from Giannis. If the other center guards Giannis, Papagiannis is free to shoot for 3. And if a 2,20m guy has no one close to him guarding him he basically shoot entirely free. It's a bit like Wemby shooting. Although the two starting guards of Greece, Calathes and Walkup arent' the best of shooters, the rest of the team have the space and permition to shoot for three, a lot.If you decide to guard them you leave space for Giannis which is never smart. Defensively Greece is pretty good too, Spanoulis had a tough defensive team with Peristeri anyway. The group of Greece is very strong but I think it can make it to semifinals. Not the best of teams but a very hard team to beat.
Great analysis guys. Keep up the good work.
thank you!
Papagiannis has significantly improved this year. He can shoot, he can hedge... Not a liability any more. Everybody gives their best to make the defensive plan work. It is a Team, finally. Let's see...
Very good points, and very thorough analysis. I think this is the best leveraging of Giannis ever seen so far, allow me to say not only in the Greek team but in the NBA as well, I would expect the same plays only in a Popovich team.
What I like about this new Greek national team is that at last they play with offensive and defensive plays. Coach Spanoulis, like Olympiacos' coach Bartzokas, seems to have quite an arsenal of plays for each one of his players. Giannis is a global superstar and I can understand the pressure he might feel to win a trophy with the national team. But this time we have a coach who can easily use Giannis' tremendous talent. Not to mention that Giannis, during this tournament, was out of rhythm (a result of his injury and prolonged absence off the court) but still he was a threat for every opponent. A healthy and ready Giannis, under Spanoulis guidance, will boost the entire team.
Its very important that they played as team and not as Giannis team. That was the mistake with the Slovenians that they played as a Doncits team!
Fun fact: "Nick Kalathes" means "Nick Basket" in greek.
Really good and informative analysis Augustas.
I think the main difference compared to previous years, even though this roster has some weaknesses and absentees, is that Spanoulis has actually sat down and thought about how to utilise Giannis in the best way possible, whilst not making the rest of the team feel like they're just there to make up numbers. Whilst we had some decent coaches in the past, they were not able to incorporate Giannis in a meaningful way most of the time and the team essentially boiled down to "give the ball to Giannis and cross your fingers". Worked great when the opposition didn't/couldn't deal with him in an efficient way but only then. Having players that were of top euroleague calibre and reducing them to just "pass to one guy and stay out of the way" was abhorrent.
Spanoulis commands the respect of the whole team and has a winning mentality, which helps by itself. Combine that with making everyone in the team feel useful, having plays that use Giannis as a distraction to create for the rest of team and also letting Giannis do his thing when he can, and you get a good team.
It also helps that Calathes seems to somehow, at this age, play the best basketball of his career, Papagiannis adding a 3pt threat and a few other bits and pieces, and this team is fun to watch, as well as having the ability to always turn the defensive screws on when things in attack are not going too well.
Nevertheless, I think that even going through the group stage is going to be a challenge, with the likes of Canada, Australia and Spain. Running the floor against Canada (a mini-USA team) is not going to work too well I think. Australia is full of NBA players, even if they aren't as good as in previous iterations and Spain is maybe average in terms of roster, but Spain is Spain. Our frontline is somewhat weak in numbers (especially if Kostas Anteto is injured) and whilst having big men that stretch the floor is good when Giannis is on the court, it doesn't work as well when he isn't (and we don't have a traditional C that can play with his back towards the basket). Would have liked to also have Sloukas on the squad (not so much for his creativity, I think that's well covered with Calathes and Walkup, but mostly for his scoring) but injuries are part of the game unfortunately.
If we get even better than this we will get a gold medal 🥇 for the first time in the Olympics 🎉🇨🇾🇬🇷😊

Calathes deserved more credit, he was the mvp of the final and he averaged over 10 ast in the tournament
Outstanding analysis! Could not agree more with every single point you have made. Greece can and should improve you are absolutely right.,
Spanoulis as a coach seems to utilize his bigest asset as a player, often overlooked by basketball experts. This asset is situational awareness in play making, making sure everyone gets the task the can succed in.
It's USA, France, Serbia and after those 3 powerhouses there's teams like Germany, Greece, Spain.. Olympics will be lit!

Walkup-calathes-Papanikolaou-Giannis-Papagianis is a top tier 5 squad with an active Nba player and 4 that passed from NBA and now top range Euroleague players . Adding to that Mitoglou, Larentzakis,Charambopoulos, Toliopoulos, Kostas ante if he plays sure Greece has very good players overall Nba, euroleague , defensive players ,passionate players sure a player to change the rythm like Dorsey is missing or a tool and cheerful guy like thanasis but it is what it is . The big star for sure its tha coach that has understand his players . As a Greek they only thing I want is the team to fight every game and we see. No big talks
and imagine greece is missing 3 top class euroleague players
Papapetrou and Rogkavopoulos are mid tier, Sloukas is the only "top class" missing.

The title is misleading, Spanoulis made the big difference. The national team has echoes of Peristeri, a very team orientated mentality, Antentokoumpo would take his shots only if he has the best shot in a possession. He would go to the bench also when he's not the best option like it happened against Croatia when it was crucial to get Saric/Zupac out of the paint and Spanoulis CHOSE to play with Mitoglou/Papagiannis and Antentokoumpo on the bench.
A Greek speaker called him Pistol-iopoulos.
Very funny but accurate.
Credits to their defense it really made them the best team out of the group
Excellent game analysis! Spanulis must to be with Giannis in Milwaukee Bucks
I am looking forward to see what spanoulis can do with this team after one month of perpetuation. Definitely I want them to the next round in Olympics. Hopefully a.medal too. They deserve it
yes and i feel this team, even with some absences, is more connected and more chemistry than previous years
As a Greek, thank you for this educational video because people think that Greece only won because of Giannis. Of course, he is our best and star player, but everyone in our roster is playing fantastic, and Spanoulis as a coach, is doing an amazing job. Great video.

Would love to see an Olympic Greece vs France final and the USA vs Spain for the Bronze.
Greece and Spain are not competitive teams, they can never reach the final
Very good analysis
Giannis didnt have the big moments this tourney the other guys had. He was just doing his thing
Giannis he is one of the top three players in the world .With Spanoulis he understand what basketball its not a one man show game and some times its better to pass the ball .He put his self under the team and Greece now its more strong.
he understood well that with Billy playing diva is no more an option or he would be out of the team
Big Papa the better Brook Lopez!
Not even close... Papa is great and all, but regarding defense and rebounding he is below average.
@@dragonxx444 He's more mobile than Lopez though, he cuts inside better, he can block higher, he also has a mid ranger while lopez doesn't
you can't compare the two, Papagiannis is more like a 2.18 m cornerman and not a center really....
Also, he (and almost every European player), needs to visit the gym more. Excellent talent and skills for so many guys but couldn't compete at the same level at NBA just because of that.
Having +10 inches(25cm) vertical, +30lb(13.5kilos) more of muscles and spending more time training,
would make all the difference since NBA is 95% super athletes (and also very talented too!).
Even if you are more talented, you can't play defence if train of muscles is coming towards you or if they are physically that much better than you (try defending Curry running circles non-stop and being lighting fast at shooting)
The Bald Mamba, V.Span, is the glue keeping this team together. I won’t be surprised if Greece upsets teams like USA or Canada on their way to an Olympic metal.
Kalathes surname is translated in English as Basketmaker. And is not a joke.
I can't help but wonder how stronger greece could have been with euroleague mvp Sloukas not injured
Really good team they have great strategy
Definitely more work to be done is necessary. Very high level at the Olympics. Still, the potential is there

2008 Greece didn’t have a NBA Superstar like Giannis but they had a better team in the overall, coming from a Eurobasket tile and a World Cup final, Late 1980s Greece led by Galis, Giannakis and Christodoulou were legendary but not really comparable to nowadays game, this Greece is in a really difficult group, had lots of trouble in previous tournaments leading to early exits. The fair comparison would be if they could eliminate a team like 2008 Argentina and play a quarterfinal, that’s when this Greece can get in the convo, better than the recent years, lots of grounds to cover to reach the heights of 1987-1989 and 2005-2007
Galis can definetly be considered as a superstar

Rogavopoulos and Papapetrou wouldn't make such a big difference, they all have the replacements in the roster. Spanoulis' roster is very "Stacked" on every position, maybe not as stacked as the US team but it still is a deep roster and that will help us go through.
