    Thomas, you made me laugh when you stated that you were going down a very dark path (LOL!!). I don't have anything close to what you or your friends have and I enjoy my system. I do like electronics and what different components can deliver, but I take it as simply a hobby. I enjoy the music first and foremost. Nothing will be perfect with reproduced audio unless you have the musicians themselves perform in the room with you. Thank you for sharing!

    I held on to $4000 CDN system for nearly 10 years without any urge to change. Now with my ~$30K system, I am constantly looking for a change. Sometimes I have remind myself that I have an awesome system and just enjoy it what I have and be real critical on the next purchase.

    Hi Thomas, I have the Canton SL 596. Their woofers are titanium so wondering what would be a good amp pairing? The Denon pma800 I am using now seems lacking for some reason and little fatiging. Should I try class D with the Crown for higher power, upgrade my solid state, or even jump to tubes? I am a newby so having difficulty deciding how to upgrade. I just know the speakers are capable of much more.

    I really do not like to see the cost of a system used as a specification of performance; IT IS NOT.. For a basic analog system, you can buy various pieces and have under $1500 in a really nice SOUNDING system. I have heard very high end phono cartridges costing over $10,000 and was not impressed. I have heard some $150 cartridges that were very nice and detailed.
    If you read some of the high end magazines, I generally find the more adjectives used to exclaim how great an item is is often inversionally proportional to any real science behind the claims.
    There is and has been more SNAKE OIL in high end audio than any other field of electronics ever. Cables are among the worst area of all.... You can try 450 ohm feedline for about 60 cents a foot has very low capacitance since the spacing is wide enough. They attenuate high frequencies very little. They are NOT sexy like other so called high end cables but for amp to speaker feeds they sound wonderful.
    The problem, to some extent, are the huge number of NON technical people with lots of disposable income who thing more money is more sound.
    Don't worry about competing with someone who has $300K or even $20K in their system. It's not the dollars that count but HOW DOES IT SOUND TO YOU !!!! Try listening to what you have and if the sound moves you, BE HAPPY !!!!

      不必擔心與系統中擁有30萬美元甚至2萬美元的用戶競爭。不是美元重要,而是如何向您發出聲音!試聽您的聲音,如果聲音讓您感動,請開心!

      I absolutely agree that price does not always dictate how a system is going to really sound. I am running a slew of car audio amps for my home theater system. All amplifiers I am using are old school Phoenix Gold amps, and they sound amazing. I didn't spend over $100 on each amp (I'm running 5 separate 2 channel amps) and I am using 3 EQ's to tailor the sound along with the built in crossovers in the amplifiers. As for speakers, I pretty much replaced all the drivers in my front stage and my surrounding speakers with higher end speakers like McIntosh, Polk Audio Lsi, Boston Acoustics, DCM speakers, Phase Linear, etc... I have a killer sounding home theater system that does everything I need it to. It is loud, clean and clear.

      Hi Thomas, I got a question. With your ear and knowledge of equipment. Can an mp3 file or something similar be musical? As a consumer with small pockets. Can that be achieved? Thank you.

    • @916vp
      @916vp 6 лет назад

      Also, besides resolution loss in mp3. What else is loss in the process? Sound stage, Imaging etc. Everyone I know either stream mp3 type of file or stream from RUclips. Thanks

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  6 лет назад

      Usually for mp3, ideally you want at least 320kps as I find 128k a bit 'hollow'. It all depends what you mean by musical. For a lot of setup, regular mp3 is ok and hard to tell a difference from a cd, only when you have a highly resolving system, you can hear the difference. (Even then, I am not sure everyone can pass a blind test on it)

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  6 лет назад

      That is a good question, I never compare an mp3 file against a cd to see if it affects anything else. Here is an interesting article. I would say unless you are have resolving system, I would not worry it as much. I personally don't use mp3 and i can hear a difference when I stream from Spotify compare to my cdrip but I still enjoy listening to spotify.

      No no no. Not double, unless you have an empty room. If your system sounds a bit thin and leaves you cold, then no room treatment will solve it. Once you have a great sound, putting a LOT of books in the shelfs will help a lot, but we are talking 20% better sound - which is a lot- not double and triple. But I get it what you mean. Again, books, books, books. No treatment pannels can beat them, to my experience.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  5 лет назад

      Everything piece in the stereo chain matters but for me, if you are looking into holographic 3D sound, then I would spend more time looking into the preamp. Check out my video on why tubes. A high end solid state can do it too.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  3 года назад +1

      The top end is very different between these 2 speakers. One is detail and sharp while the Elysians are not. The 3.2 has a smoother midrange while the Elysian have more texture....and so forth. So it really comes down to a question of taste. I personally am more into sharp and bright speakers, that is why I am a Focal fan.

    You shouldn't be having any doubts about the quality of these Canton's. These are wonderful speakers and I can vouch for them because I've been listening to them for many years now.
    Same disappointment at first, but as you start adding the absorbers and the diffusers at the right places you'll simply enjoy the quality of the sound. Better details? Add quality silver wires and the interconnects.
    I've paired them with Accuphase integrated amp e460, Analysis plus BSO speaker wires. Beats the more expensive systems by a mile.
    In my opinion the accoustic treatment one does to the listening room, does lot more to enhance SQ than any additions of perceived better/more expensive hardware

    • @klewja
      @klewja 4 года назад

      @@ThomasAndStereo I was at the shop tonight and listened to the s1 mk2 and the Magico a3. They were both driven with a chord hugo tt2 as the dac and pre with a d'agostino momentum stereo amp. Needless to say the d'agostino is not in my price range right now I think it was over $40k USD. But they both sounded incredible. The A3 had more bass output as it is a three way design. The s1 mk2 had better treble I think it has to do with the diamond coating on the beryllium tweeter (the a3 has beryllium as well but no diamond coating). The mids were also a bit more controlled on the s1 mk2 and I had more precise imaging and a bigger and deeper sound stage.
      I am going to be taking the s1 mk2 home this weekend. I was made an offer that I couldn't refuse ( almost 40% off of the retail price). So pretty close to the price of the a3. I really liked the a3 and the extra bass but for the price and added resolution and better mids it was the s1 that won me over. I can always add subs too but they have great bass for a two way design. Do you have any experience with subs in a 2 channel setup?
      It will be interesting to see how they play with my gear. I have a hegel h360 and meteum onyx r2r dac. The shop did have a h190 that I listened with too. The h360 has more power so it should do well.
      I am thinking about making some videos of my setup including my headphones. I currently have the Abyss AB-1266 PHI TC which probably still sounds better than my two channel setup at less than 1/5 of the price. There still is no substitute for speakers in a room though.

I know they are not popular in the North American/Canadian market but Over seas they are a big contender for there unique use of tungsten and ceramic for speaker/tweeter. Any recommendations on bookshelf with floorstanding characteristics? Great channel on RUclips!!

      Thanks. The reason I bought them is first I had the 809DC before so I know their speakers are decent. Next, it's because I am always trying to find value for the best price. For them to be well recognize in Europe, they must reach a certain level of performance. Given the fact, they are not known here, they are not expensive in the used market, which is the main reason I bought them. Bookshelves are great as they disappear easily, the Buchardt S300 will fool you into believing they are full towers. I have a review video on them. I actually made a review on a few bookshelves. But then I came across an offer for Canton Reference 3.2 (4000EUR) and I have heard you say that you liked them. I don't have an opportunity to audition Tektons or the other speakers because no store in my town has a lot of speakers on display so I am buying based on other ppl opinions, forums etc.

    Like many audiophiles I have developed very expensive tastes, but I knew logically that I needed to do something to be able to enjoy music without nitpicking about my equipment. The answer for me was to get some old used speakers that I knew well would not be as good as my main system speakers. Those cheap old speakers certainly sounded different, and not as good, but they were a novelty. I went back and forth between the two pairs of speakers and I started to appreciate the differences, not just that one was clearly better than the other. It let me see that there is no perfect speaker or system, especially when one considers the various scenarios in which they would be used. Now I am able to appreciate what I have more. I like swapping out components just to hear the differences. Yes I still think some things sound better than others, but usually even the lower end stuff has some little obscure advantage in certain recordings or at certain volume levels over even really expensive alternatives. So I am keeping myself sane by appreciating things for what they are and avoiding the trap of the pursuit of perfection. For reference, I typically spend many hundreds to a few thousand for a piece of gear, never many thousands, so my tastes are already far more modest than Thomas's.

      i have them pretty close to walls, its a small office space with heavy sound absorption. tried plugging the ports on day and found that i fixed some room modes and cleaned up the bass, without a subwoofer ports helps get some lower bass extension but with a subwoofer the ports brings some drawbacks also.
      i am not very found of ports, but without a subwoofer or eq, ports its the only way for most speakers to go low enough.
      the clean and accurate sound of a sealed enclosure is to my liking.
      there's not many options for me to get sealed bookshelf speaker, i know wharfedale got one and its better than plugging a speaker that not meant to be sealed with a plug....

    I have always bought Marantz Amps/Receivers since I moved into the Hifi world (40 years). On a hunch I thought why not buy an expensive hybrid amp to hear a difference or not. I wanted a normal brand so I went to Monoprice for their 50 watt hybrid. I did roll the tubes to North American made tubes (although the Chinese tubes were okay). My Canton pedestal mound speakers are what's used with the amp. I can honestly say the improvement was enormous for a wide detailed sound. Forbes magazine had a similar reaction when they tested the amp to the tune of "How can an amp this low in price sound this good'. The reality is the tubes redefine the sound, and going forward my next amplifier will be a hybrid one. (Rogue, NAD, Schiitt, and some others are quite reasonable in price).

    Audiophillia is a disease that prevents you from just enjoying the music. These days i see kids listening to music from their phones and they dont complain and nit pick about the quality. Its easy to get sucked into the upgrade path. I HAVE a few times but luckely managed to break FREE.
    I remember the first stereo that I bought, very bad indeed. What I have now is not high end to be sure but when I think back to first stereo and listening to music, ive realised that I dont enjoy music any more now.
    However the music is reproduced, the music is still the music. Good music is still good. And its the music that gives you goosebumps not the electronics.

I've been into "Hi-Fi/home theater since an adolescent and paid $100 for a Dolby Pro Logic decoder from Radio Shack in the late 80's. I was probably 11yrs old and everyone thought I was nuts, still am by most peoples standards. I finally learned and ACCEPTED many years back that there is a quality/performance/cost ratio that need not be crossed. Once you come to terms with this understanding and approach then you can be happy with any system built under a reasonable budget.

    Je t'appelle bientôt et en attendant ENJOY YOUR MUSIC !!!!

    Fix the acoustics in your room that is the problem no amount of money spent on stereo equipment can fix that. You don't have to spend a fortune doing this either. I've seen simple solutions like putting a large sofa on the far wall with a large tapestry above it and putting thicker curtains over the windows. Then putting blankets on any wall that seems to be reflecting to many soundwaves. Then making sure the speakers are placed in the optimum position. These are some very simple and cheap solutions you can try. I've heard some very cheap speakers that had a flat ferq. response sound like a million dollars. All you have to do is tune your room. Nice stereo equipment can only fix so much. You can try to cheat it with very us digital sam tuning software like Sonos but that is only a bandage on the real problem and that is the acoustic tuning of your room. Yes, your speakers are to big for your room and that is causing a lot of standing waves in your room. However, tuning your room to accommodate the large speakers by put up thicker padding or bafulles on the walls and ceiling might help. Don't forget to enjoy the music.

    Hi Thomas, cool videos! Just to share my experience, I noticed bigger speakers with more bass output (nothing to do with going lower down the frequencies) may be worse if the room has problems with resonance. I too upgraded from the kef ls50 to the kef reference 3 only too find these kind of problems. What I find is the so called punchy bass you are after is only possible if your room is free of resonances. So either you correct position, dampen the room or do as I did reducing bass output at the problematic frequencies with EQ (after measured by a mic). I got punchier bass and the rest of the music shines through. Bass resonance was extremely audible for instance at 41hz on hotel California live by the eagles from hell freezes over on the beat at 0:20secs. On this we should hear 2 beats slightly different tones, where I previously heard 2 loose and diffuse resonated beats. Regards

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  6 лет назад

      Thanks for sharing, yup, the punchy bass will have resonance problem if the room has an issue. I either use an equalizer or i close off the bass port. I never measure with a mic, what software to use?

    • @joaomantunes
      @joaomantunes 6 лет назад

      Thomas & Stereo I use Room EQ wizard. Measure the freq response (I find that measuring combined L+R results best) then set a nearly flat freq response target and it will generate EQ configurations for you to input on your audio player. Tipically problems occur bellow 500hz and should only try to we below it. Let me know if you need some help. Cheers

    Well, I watched this review because I watched two previous videos on Quad 989's and SF Ellipsa's. I was intrigued when you said the Quads rolled off early and then you said the same thing about the Ellipsa's, so I went digging once I finally found out what Canton's you owned. I read KR's review in Stereophile and then looked at the measurements for your speakers. For some reason, Canton puts in almost a 20db notch filter in the high frequencies right at 20k (Stereophile review fig. 4). I can't help but think this must cause some kind of phase anomalies lower down. There is practically zero response above 20k. I also found that the Ellipsa's are rated flat out to 30k, so they are still loafing along at 20k, easily within their performance envelope. Meaning most likely better phase response and lower distortion (I didn't look to see if these had been reviewed). Apparently you liked the high frequencies of your Canton's, so it 's all good, everyone's tast and ears are different). I am sorry you sold your big Canton's, they looked like nice speakers. If I were you, I would try to find a speaker that interacts minimally with a narrow room. One possible option would be omnidirectional speakers, at the lower price point Ohm Acoustics and at the upper end would be German Physiks. Deuvel may also be a possibility or even used MBL's (the standmounts). Also, electrostatics have very little radiation to the sides, it is almost all to the front and rear (the so called figure 8 pattern), but they need to be placed at least 3.5 to 4 feet out into the room (the more the better, usually) for them to breathe properly. You will probably want a sub with any of these speakers since you like that deep bass grunt. Just some things for you to think about. Don't let your room dominate you, find ways to work with it. A couple more thoughts, I hate to see anyone give up on high end audio. What about a pair of DeVore Gibbon 88's? They work well with low powered tubes. I have heard them and loved them. I think they reach down to the low 40's or upper 30's and then you should have plenty of room gain to get another 5db or so of low end response. Usher makes a slim tower with two mid/bass drivers and a diamond tweeter, there are ton's of them out there, do some digging. Some have ribbon tweeters, diamond, cone, you name it, almost every manufacturer has a 6 or 7 or 8 inch two way. I just thought of another one, the Verity Audio Parsifal. There are several generations out there, the Ovation is I think the most recent that you still can no longer buy new. The most recent is the Anniversary. The great thing about the Parsifal is the 8 inch woofer can be placed either forward or to the rear. Their preferred implementation is the woofer to the rear, but they say many customers have had great results with it pointing forward. You may want to consider a supertweeter addon to your Dynavector speakers, plus there are a couple of other speakers that might work for you mentioned in the final two pages of this article (6moons.com/audioreviews/enigma/6.html), the Albedo Aptica (didn't really need the supertweeter) and a MV One single driver speaker. Probably any good single driver speaker would work fairly well, just watch those first reflections. By the way, have you ever heard of a case of beer? That's what fiends are for, free help for your room problems for free beer. :) Or wine, or gift certificates to HDTracks, whatever floats their boat. Don't do too much to your room until you figure out what speakers you want to live with for a while. Best of luck.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  5 лет назад +2

      wow, thanks for talking the time for writing a long comment and caring. My friend has the Parsifal and I think speakers that size are perfect for my room. My room now is 11 ft wide, 8 ft tall and 15 ft long. With added bass trap, I don't hear any boominess with the bass anymore. Side reflections have been taken care off too.
      It could be the terms I use but I can hear a difference when comparing speakers with super tweeters and not. Probably owned abut 50 pairs now. Although detail are present in both type of speaker, the efffort to hear them is different. I have pioneers that can reach 100k but they do sound roll off. So I guess what I am trying to say is that it feels like they voice it to sound 'laid back' as I heard confirmed by Andrew Jones in some interviews. So it's not about how they respond in measurements but how they sound. Hence for the sake of a conversation, i just distinguish them by calling them roll off and classify them as musical. I think everyone taste is different and age also affects it. There is no correct way to listen or neither should everyone should aspire to have their system sound natural because for me, it's whatever makes you feel good and that is the end goal for me.

    I've watched this review several times, and I'm enamored by the Canton Reference speaker. It seems that you have since moved on from this speaker, and I wondered why. I also wanted to know how the Canton Reference compared to the B&W and Revel that you mentioned in the review. Reviews of the Canton Reference speakers are rare.

      I felt my room was too small for it. Eventually I settle on the Silverline Sonata cause it is not too expensive and it sounds really good. I don't want a super expensive speaker because I don't have the time to enjoy it. I have had other high end speakers and just end up sitting there. The reason is because of my youtube channel, I end up spending most time listening to review samples instead of my own speaker.

    I feel the key is the overall concept of the room, including power supply, room acoustics, components, cables, location of the components and listener spot. To limit the focus to budget & speakers only is missing the essence of a system to a large degree, based on my experience. In the past i also underestimated the importance of the overall concept. I am very familiar with Canton Reference & Canton Reference K and i can assure you, that these Speakers - as all high quality speakers - need the correct ingredients in order to perform according to their capabilities.

    I feel for you. There are tremendous variables in Audio that come before the system you listen to. There is how it was recorded. With what equipment. Which microphones. The room that it was recorded in. How the mics were placed in relation to the instruments. The recording engineer. The mastering engineer. The studio monitors that the mastering engineer used. Ad Infinitum. Were the engineers smoking left-handed cigarettes at the time? Then there’s listening room acoustics of your system. One final bit I should add. Absolutes are not obtainable. However anxiety over the money spent on the system interferes with the pleasure of listening to good music well recorded. The problem with an “UNOBTAINIUM AUDIO COMPANY” system is that it is not for sale on earth at any price. Now, one can have decent sound from systems starting at about $1000 on up. Stop listening to the system and enjoy the performances. Good luck.

    Hello Thomas, I enjoy your quest to find that special sound, however I feel you may be focusing too much on numbers. I recently went back to Magnepans as this was the first speaker that gave me the audiophile bug. My system is composed of all used components, but they have "synergy" and that is what makes a system special. My system disappears and I can sit back and listen to the music and not the equipment. All of my components were only around $2500 used (originally around $4000 new).

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  6 лет назад

      Congrats on building a system that has great synergy. I am not really stuck on numbers, that is why I try speakers from all price point. From $300 all the way to $20k. I went thru 30 pairs and all of them have their strength and weakness. Magnepans, I never tried because of space. I have a home theater projector screen and those speakers would block the screen. That is the ONLY reason I never try Magnepans.

    Thomas, i have made some comments about room acoustics. And I will do it again. Your speaker set up is fine and for sure well balanced because you have passion and put alot of effort into chosing that equipment and you are very detail orientated. But its the room causing the problems, not your equipment. These large speakers are almost "trapped" in the narrow room. I bet if you place your speakers in that 300.000 speaker room you will be amazed how good they sound. The room makes 90% of the sound. Maybe a project for you, testing these speakers in another room.. maybe a new path out of the dark path where you are right now..

  • @rotorfix
    @rotorfix 6 лет назад

    Thomas,
    I can't help but think you might benefit from some less conventional designs. I too went through numerous 3-way, narrow-baffle floorstanders. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any that tug at the heartsrings, whether driven by SS or tubes. In a previous comment you said there was something you liked about the Spendors (i believe they were S5es?) but couldn't put your finger on it. I'd wager that something was musicality -- something I find is missing from 95% of narrow-baffle floorstanders. Unfortunately, Spendor is not known for "punchy bass," however, their newer models with the Ep77 cones, like the D7 & D9, produce a lot more "punch" and snap. Yes, these are narrow-baffle towers but they have the British midrange and timing which makes all the difference.
    Other speakers I suspect you might like are the Devore O/96 and Audio Note ANe...and maybe even a good horn speaker like the Volti Rival. These are brands that have discovered the all too elusive equation for sonic emotion. And let all those measurements be damned!

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the suggestion. I took out the Spendor S8e to listen again yesterday, I just like that sound and I am still trying to figure out why. One day, I will try their higher end model. I should give horn a try, and if I come across a pair of Volti, I will pay attention to it.

    The Reference3.2 is really good. But the 18Hz bass extension spec is some funky -10dB German standard, totally unrealistic. Also Cantons have a passive high pass filter on the bass drivers to decrease excursion and increase dynamic range - they call it DC. That makes the bass punchy and clear but not deeper than the woofers can handle. The speaker has solid 30hz extension - that's all you need in a home environment, for music.

    • @ThomasAndStereo

    We have the emperors new clothes syndrome. Upgradeitis. Audiophilia Nervosa. Gear Aquisition Syndrome (GAS) The need to continually change/upgrade and never be satisfied. This is fuelled by a market of mostly Asian made audio jewellery. Parts are made in Asia, and assembled in other countries. Even genesis does this. Components are made for pennies on the dollar, and priced at an arbitrarily high pricepoint that is frequently 10-20x the manufacturing cost. This is for snob appeal. It goes hand in hand with the self-hypnosis that you autromatically assume more expensive is always better. FWIW: the human chest cavity resonates at 115hz. Any system with sufficient energy at that point will make your heart move. While I'm sure it's wonderul to change gear like people change socks, its more wonderful to find something great and stick with it. Psst--- NKOTB isn't a reference-quality recording. I care a lot about soundstage and imaging- that's vital to fidelity. No tower speaker is going to drive 18hz in a room that small, or very well compared to a dedicated sub. Who cares if it's 60db at 18hz? That's useless. A bit rediculous? It's like someone charging $2000 for a bottle of water.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  6 лет назад +1

      There are a few things I agree but some I don't. "emperors new clothes syndrome. Gear Aquisition Syndrome (GAS)"can be true for some people but not true for all the audiophiles I meet. At least not me, I will be the first to admit I have the upgrade bug and it's a disease I enjoy and hate. However, I don't think it's fair to say that for all audiophiles. I truly believe most people upgrade for very good reason and they don't pay high price for snob appeal. Just that price is set by the free market and the audio market does not work like the mass market. Cost to run business is different. Sure there are some stuff that are ridiculously priced such as, in my opinion, crazy expensive cables, but there are many high end gear that are price correctly based on their business model, even if it is 10x the cost of manufacturing. If you ever ran a company like I did, it's a bit more complicated than that. Some stuff, if you don't charge 10x, you cannot stay in business, for example, limited customers due to niche market as opposed to Sony selling to millions of people.
      You can charge someone $2k for a bottle of water, but does not mean people will buy it continuously. People might buy if our of curiosity but it is not sustainable. I think most people are honest and fair. Everyone is in this business to make a profit, some take advantage of the market but I believe most are doing what they need to to stay in business.
      Just to clarify, moving my heart, I don't mean it literally so I don't understand about the 115hz. The music I listen to actually don't have a lot of bass.
      18hz...yeah, on paper. Maybe I will get it in a big room but I can't imagine it's possible. Finally, remember, this is not a review channel. I am a nobody just chatting to an audience like a friend, so I really don't care about reference quality recording, think of it like having a friend over, I just do stuff like on a normal Sunday, that is why no high quality production with my videos.

  • @thomasblock1164
    @thomasblock1164 5 лет назад

    If you listen to much older music you are in danger of having better listening equipment than they had recording equipment. You don't want limit your choices because, "well I don't like the music so well but they recorded at my favorite studio." I know how your mind works because I know a guy very well whose mind works similarly. Each step taken makes the expenditure more "reasonable." I suggest that you might change your criteria. This guy I know so well is building his own set of, hopefully, fairly high performing front speakers for movies. The sound is where it is at. I almost have all the components and will start on the cabinets soon. They will never compete with the type of speakers you play around with but they should make me happy. I mean that guy I know. Anyhow...maybe go deep by designing your own system, "how good can i get with $10,000? How good can it be with everything at least 30 years old? It would still hold interest for your channel and might be a lot of fun. You are running into diminishing returns, maybe it's time to maximize returns. I can see it now, tears streaming down your face listening to the Scorpions and the Berliner Philharmoniker "Winds of change" Beautiful! On a system you scavenged together for less the half a years wages. (not making fun of you) Best wishes to you.
