In this Video I went to KEF HQ to find out more about the Reference Speakers History, how the company manufactures them, how they are designed and tested. This was followed by an interview with KEF Head of Acoustics Jack Oclee-Brown.
I put him through his paces with a lot of questions and he has given us a real insight into the though process behind the Reference Speakers Range and the other speakers KEF make.

I see my 104 ab's on display in the museum, still used as my speaker today, and still love them 46 yrs later
Thanks for this. Very interesting. I learned from the interview in particular.
Fantastic information session Lads, this video helped more of the KEF Reference part 1 to 3 videos make more sense to me. I felt this to be the part four of that trilogy haha. Tech explained and how it implement in the room 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Amazing to see inside KEF. Good work!
Thanks and excellent review and look forward to speaking with Jack soon as I order my KEF
Thanks for the vid. Very interesting. I have LS50s and they work wonderfully with my Icon Audio Valve amp. Would love to upgrade to the reference 1 - a dream for the future.
Fantastic interview.
Really liked this video. I still use today (after 23 years) the Kef 103/4 as my main speakers. They sound better as you use better components and cabling.
I was blown away with the Kef Q series when I got them and just upgraded my front mains to the LS50 so I can only imagine the spectacular sonic image you are experiencing with the reference.... maybe one day i bite the bullet to a reference 1.
I agree with this statement whole heartedly......I've started with Q700 and have been blown away by the UNI-Q array.....SOO GOOD!!....I'm contemplating scaling down my footprint and going to LS50's as well.
Great video Terry, good to see your channel doing so well. I bought your old LX83 amp back in the day!
Hello mate what a surprise :) Thanks very much all the best hope your doing well
Pursuit Perfect System yes I’m good thanks. I was researching the Kef in wall and ceiling speakers and found your videos - very useful. Last time I saw your channel there was only a few videos - now there’s hundreds! I’ve subbed.
@@ntube7 Thanksfor subbing I really appreciate it. You only have about another 750 videos to go to catch up :). be another hundred or 2 by then haha
I too have spent all my money on Kef speakers and a big amp to drive them, and can no longer afford shoes.....
ZERO REGRETS!!!
One day I'll get that Ref 1. One day...
subbed! today I bought a pair of R700s and the R200C to replace some of my 3005SE eggs. hopefully they'll be delivered sometime next week. So excited my first floorstanders 😁
Thank you 🙏 honestly I’m all over the place, I’ve settled on a Luxman 509 AB, Kef refrence 3 meta and HiFi rose rs150b all in silver, kimble 8tc as they genuinely are the very best for conducting the right frequencies between speaker and integrated amp, nothing comes near, the high end cables are emperors clothes, a rip off, I think now I’ve got possible the best sounding system for my space possible, I’m sure I can get better we always can, but ugly cables and boxes everywhere is just awful. Aesthetics and the sound are what matter. Thank you for all your hard work, you’ve given me good advice. Top bloke
The best comes from England .i am the owner of the LS 50 .Music that i know for 40 years are suddenly so very detailed.Amazing for such a "small" speakers.Joy
Hi, great video however some constructive criticism. Can you pay more attention to your volume levels please? I turn my TV up so I can hear you talk them the music during your B role deafens me. It's a constant battle with the volume adjustment to watch. Cheers.
Yes, I had the same volume problems on my Imac whist viewing in RUclips. Not a biggie but perhaps something to be mindful of.
jaspal kallar as I mentioned below it seems fine on my phone, even on the phone speaker and was ok on my computer when I edited the video. I cant test on everything obviously will try and fix it for the future for you all. Thanks for letting me know though its helpful
Had this fucker cranked in my car. Then the music started. I almost had a premature death.
jibba02 sorry about that it tested fine on my phone through headphones. The music is designed to get ones attention but not cause a cardiac arrest sorry man
Pursuit Perfect System what these people mean is, can you normalise the whole videos volume levels.
Instead of the talking part of the video being low in volume, then music loud - increase the volume of your speech in post so that one does not have to keep changing the volume.
I want to hear these!!
Hi I would like to know which one you think is best. KEF ref 5 or b&w 800 d series? Thanks
Thanks for all your insight - as a 805D3 owner (and formerly 802D2, had to go because of smaller room) I'm enjoying great dynamics & clarity but lack the image size. You (and others) report that KEF reference is great in this regard. Did you ever compare B&W 800D3 series with the reference? Will I lose clarity for a bigger image? Or is the high end just different? Waiting for testing them myself directly, but already asking you :)
Bowers 800 sounds very different to KEF Reference - KEF REF are great for stereo imaging that is where they really shine IMO but they are a bit rolled off in the treble for a smoother, warmer maybe more "refined" sound - that is open to interpretation.
Bowers 800's are livelier sounding in the mids and treble especially - they seem to image really well between the speakers and even above the speakers - more "air" to the sound, maybe not as good imaging to the left and right of the speakers as the KEF - "maybe" I havent tested enough to know for 100% sure.
There is a very big scale of sound from the 800 they are very big speakers - more price comparable with KEF Blades.
KEF blades in a bigger room are really good for a 3D sound stage and really up the anti over the Reference in terms of transparency and therefore soundstage imaging.
They are all very good speakers, great to listen to but go about things in different ways - different strengths I really like them all :)
I’m new to all of this ‘audiophile’ gear, now own a pair of LS50 Metas and a Pair of R11’ , both of which I love. Can someone please breakdown the jargon I keep hearing!
Imagining
Toe in
Soundstage
Coloration
Sound signature
Apologies in advance if this sounds a daft question 🎵🔊
I am wondering if the uni-q driver in the reference is the same as the one mounted on the LS50 meta
They are the same design principle but the more expensive speakers get better quality parts in the uniq
I searched for kef TDM hoping to get some kind of a review or something about the TDM series. When your video came up I thought I was on to something ... Wrong..... Good video though.
happy to please and sad to disappoint you all at the same time :)
The Reference 2C and 5C don't have ports, how do they sound compared to the ported reference 1 and 3?
I am continuously amazed how bad the audio quality on some of these audiophile review sites is. Don’t they listen to their own audio?
You need $15k speakers for it to sound good, lol!
I thought the first current dumping amp from Quad was the 405, the 306 was before that.
Would love a Reference but can afford Q900, which I enjoy.
What’s up with the shoes?
Hi Victor - I assume you mean the fact I am not wearing any. Its a very cosy room with nice carpet and a nice rug - its also bloody hot in there :)
Pursuit Perfect System Hahaha good answer! When you have nice carpet, it’s Ike perfect grass... so go no shoes!
Great video but I wish you would wear lapel mics or use a good shotgun mic. Way too low level audio.
this was one of the first videos I ever made so I made a lot of mistakes for a long time and had to learn a whole host of skills along the way. Sorry it's not better but if you check my recent videos the quality is now very high
Hi what's your opinions on the R series compared to the b&w cm series ?
Harry Critchley Hi Harry I have only heard the r series very little. The B&W 700 series are good speakers much better than the cm range more 800 series tech in them. if it was me I would be looking at 700 series over CM. Then it's a KEF vs B&W decision tough one both good.
Pursuit Perfect System I have heard that the 700 series are a lot better than the cm series, unfortunately i bought my cm9 s2 6 months before the 700's were released ! But now im wanting a speaker with more bass , better sound staging and a sweeter treble response so i have been thinking about the R 900's with there uniQ and larger bass driver's. No one near me has them available to listen too so i would be buying them without an audition and i wanted to be sure if they were a worthy upgrade ?
Harry Critchley oh ok mate sorry didn't know. Tough one for me an alternative might be from Dali as well worth a consideration. where do you live
Pursuit Perfect System I live in Gloucestershire so there are places around but none that have speakers i want to listen too, I have heard dali floor standers before and wasn't totally impressed with them but i used to own a smsll pair dali sensor 1 book shelf speakers and they were great ( infact i still regret selling them)
I demoed the kef r500 and thought they were pretty good and i keep hearing how good the rest of the R series range is.
Harry Critchley my advice is get in touch with Nintronics and line up a full demo worthy of the drive to and from theirs.
They have a ridiculous amount of speakers available for demo but best arrange it so they know what you want to hear then try a lot of different options.
Then make a day of it and maybe come home with your speakers of choice either in the car ordered that way it's a worth while long trip.
You need to hear them all really and no other way to do it. It's hard as a HiFi enthusiasts to get to hear all you want to. sadly means a lot of effort but it's a lot of money and something very important. It's worth the effort in my opinion and can be a great day out. Say Terry from You Tube said to contact them and they will look after you even more :)
The music volume is about right but your voice is quite hard to hear unfortunately
alphanumerix1 i do test all my videos out on my phone on headphones and I didnt notice any issues with the vocal volume. I was whispering a bit in the museum as it felt like a library. Sorry if you cant really hear me. It didnt really notice it during the editing etc
I love your videos Terry, but you should wear sock and shoes…..pants too.
Peace and love
is kef and wharfedale related
no :)
as the others have mentioned, there is uneven mixing of audio in this video.
Put shoes on Bro,be serious:)
Jarek Marek hahaha it was 30 odd degrees in there that day was trying to stay cool. no shoes is the way forward :)
yea put some gloves on to. what the fudge are you thinking
/sarcasm
The sound on this video is horrible, you should seriously consider investing in a wireless lapel mic.
haha this is one of the first videos I ever made I now have amazing sound in my videos. Check the date of this video and check my newer work
Pursuit Perfect System you’re indeed right, I hadn’t noticed the date. You do amazing work. Thank you for your efforts!
Not the old Reference saying again who ever came up with that for the use hifi in equipment makes me laugh.😀.In reference too what???
Good video but Disliked for that totally unnecessary burst of noise that is supposedly your intro music. What a stupid thing to have. The soft volume and suddenly loud sounds are so inconsistent
That is a little harsh dont you think considering watching the video cost you nothing and cost me time and money to make??
This is one of the first videos I ever made so I made loads of mistakes
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Reconsidered and Liked. Indeed it was an early attempt by you. Good of you to respond, and Subscribed :)
@@MaharionPendragon haha cheers man
The only speakers that look any good are the blades
