      So glad you saw this, clarity helps so much. As for breathing techniques, they often are quite tricky because they so often become a way we try to have control… and when we no longer attempt to have control then sleep and peace of mind happens automatically

    After going on a 2 week camping/road trip with my brother that involved miles and miles of hiking and driving when I was dealing with insomnia on a nightly basis, it made me realize that you can still accomplish great things with no sleep. I was lucky if I got an hour of sleep a night on that trip but that still didn’t stop me.

      I don't know how you did that. I feel terrible all day if I don't sleep and can't function at all. I always dread trips. You are incredible.

      @@mybossisinheaven523 it was definitely hard but looking back I’m so glad I did it. In my experience, the decision to still live my life during insomnia wasn’t a quick fix but rather it’s those moments to look back on and say “oh ya, I was barely sleeping at the time but I still got a lot of stuff done” and that realization brings clarity.

    I have had insomnia off and on for a while now and I have been watching your videos Daniel and bought 2 of your books, and I love your passion and gentle way you try to help people. God bless you. Last night I had a bit of a speed bump again and as I struggled with the anxiety that was trying to overtake me I was able to keep it from spinning out of control by telling myself that I was safe, I am safe! I am safe, why am I so afraid? I know I am safe! But it is is a feeling of loss of control that I realized was the main problem! And of course the dread of how bad you might feel the next day. And as you know we can't control our sleep, but it is as you say tricky because I am often able to fall back asleep on those nights even though it may only be for a short period of time or very light, dreamy sleep, but it seems like I made it happen! So there Aha! I think I am controlling sleep! Not true I think maybe I am just letting it happen? What a journey! I have so much compassion for anyone going through this, I am a Christian and love the Lord and have prayed for healing, and have slept well at times after reading Psalms 91 I also prayed to God for courage too! Maybe this is developing my courage, I hope so. Anyway just food for thought for anyone having similar struggles. Take care and my prayers will be for everyone having trouble sleeping.

      ❤ I am almost 2 month into this journey and I am averaging about 3 hours per night sometimes 5 hours but in increments, I am also a Christian and pray a lot… it’s humbling and very hard

    This is so true. Now that I've mostly recovered, I look back and realize that even though I slept horribly I still functioned quite well. The fear of it was worse than what actually happened.
    I learned to eat better and exercise on those days which gave me a lot more energy after those bad nights.
    The bottom line. The fear of what might happen during my insomnia stint was worse than any ACTUAL thing that happened. I had to mentally train myself that I will be OK no matter what, and I was! When I truly started to notice that, I relaxed more and ultimately slept better.
    Like you're always saying, this is not about sleep. It's about mastering your anxiety. Then sleep will come. I sure wish I had found you when I was in my darkest times.

      Can you share how did you mentally train yourself to understand that everything will be ok? I used to have insomnia problems 2 years ago, for months and I managed to master my sleep but now since few months I think am going through some anxiety - although I sleep 8h, my sleep is totally not refreshing it s so misleading. What happened I was at a party in february, didnt sleep whole night and trained in the morning after a lot of alcohol and stuff..got weird heart racing and I got a bit scared after that. Since then the problems started...could this all be anxiety and overthinking stressing about it? Obviously i did tests and everything is fine. I m also a bit lonely so this doesn't help and it s a vicious cycle..

      ​@@puhacz4271 It's definitely a vicious cycle, and alcohol is a big trigger for me too.
      Last weekend I had a sleepless night after drinking alcohol. The heart racing was so uncomfortable.
      The difference is now I knew it was temporary whereas a year ago I would have panicked and worried the following night and so forth.
      The only thing that trains yourself is time and paying attention to the small progress.
      You've just admitted that you struggle with loneliness. This was a BIG reason for my insomnia too. Getting out of the house or finding some sort of social life is key to de-stressing your body. No one ever talks about this, but it's huge!
      Even if you don't have a lot of people to hang out with, just getting out and distracting yourself helps.
      So a combination of making sure I'm getting exercise, social interaction and busying myself was key to not thinking about my sleep issue.
      Doing so, boosts your mood, lowers anxiety naturally and you eventually learn that will help you sleep as you notice your body sleeping better.....even if it's just a little.
      So it was a gradual thing for me. First step was realizing it was lifestyle and making those changes. Second step was noticing small improvements in sleep AFTER making those lifestyle changes.
      That trains your brain to notice that these little things help over time. So you slowly begin to realize that you CAN sleep and that lifestyle matters.
      Once this happens, you don't worry as much because you realize you actually DO have control over the situation.
      So try to change up your lifestyle. Maybe spend an entire day outside the house / outdoors if you can. Distract yourself and stay physically active that whole day.
      See if you notice that you can sleep a little better after lowering your anxiety through activity. Keep a journal and write down when you notice your sleep improves.
      Your brain needs to start noticing that you have control and it's not permanent. Once that happens, you start to relax and sleep better.

      @@quickpstuts412 Definitely it is gradual I remember once I improved my sleep with time restriction I began to realize I dont need hours to fall asleep..and then I was falling asleep faster. I will definitely try to spend the whole day outside..this is what I actually did in the past. But freaking covid and work from home since 2020 does not help at all. Thanks for all your suggestion I will do my best

      @@puhacz4271 Oh I totally hear ya! I work from home so I am isolated a lot more now and that does not help at all.
      And if you can't get outside, at least just find a hobby or activity that you can get lost in. The key is distraction so you aren't so hyper focused on not sleeping.

      @@quickpstuts412 By the way you mentioned to spend the whole day outdoors, I haven't done that many times due to my sedentary job and lifestyle but when I was desperate and had sleepless nights I actually decided to go out the whole day and come back home when it was time to go to sleep. I was surprised how much energy your body has even after such bad nights. It was crazy but I walked almost whole day did probably around 50-70000 steps. I passed out in my bed and had such deep sleep. I also didn't use electronics those days at all. Just left it at home. Now I think this would help but it's like my brain telling me "hey..sth is wrong so you better stay home " :(

    I relate to a fear of feeling run down the next day and not really a fear of wakefulness. I’ve been watching your videos and they have been really helpful and I still feel frustrated when I feel tired the next day. Working on acceptance and being ok with it. When I have slept and feel rested, focused, productive, happy etc. I like feeling that way. So also working on not being attached to that as well.

    This is exactly what I was looking for. I'm happy lying in bed at night and I'm not afraid of that at all. I'm only afraid about how ill be the next day.
    I'm worried about my appearance (my eyes currently look terrible, dark rings and bags), and how I will function. But today I'm actually functioning OK aside from the appearance. This is the scary part for me.

      After befriending wakefulness too much say I was up till 3 AM doing what I enjoy bt still I don't have that much sleep drive..can I just lie in bed closing my eyes & give my body some rest with 0 expectations of sleep & no anxiety. Can I do that??

      SAME. Call me materialistic but appearance is the worst of my fears. Forget the fatigue, the memory loss, the dizziness, the weak muscles, shortness of breath, etc. I’m young and seeing my appearance fade away rapidly is making me more depressed than I should be ):

      In my personal experience dark rings under the eyes are a combination of heredity and nutritional deficiencies. Eg I no longer have raccoon eyes now that I have access to better food. All the info you need to fix the raccoon problem is available on YT btw. If you are willing to poke around a bit, you will eventually find what works for you. Maybe, at the end of the day, you will embrace the raccoon look. After all, raccoons are cool 😎. I hope this helps. 😘

    “We cannot have peace when our means are violent.” Well stated, Coach Daniel, thank you! 🙏 BTW, since both the sleep universe and the field of health&nutrition are plagued with misinformation these days, I’ve got to wonder how much these two realms overlap. if we were to clean up our gym and our pantry, wouldn’t we eventually sleep better as a result…? 🤔

    Started going to bed at midnight & getting up whenever I felt like it, slept good 5 days in a row.. then
    watched TV too late.. about 5AM ..Even though it was very late i wasn't sleepy because of too many movies. I lay down to go to sleep.. All of a sudden I became anxious.. It's been a long time since I was anxious.I was afraid of the anxiety so much i never tried going back to bed.. Did not sleep at all tonight. at different times during the day I could feel the anxiety building a little bit.. then at 10 PM I could feel it building up.. I walked the hallway about 10 times slowly 3 times, this helped me calm down. I started to say: gently let it go.. something I learned from Nina's recovery. then I did one finger light tapping from my head to my toe.. saying gently let it go.. working down the body relaxing each part of my body.. saying in paradise I will go walking along the creek and maybe go fishing, talking with my friends and pick black berries and fruit and have a delicious meal with all my friends And then maybe we'll go hiking in the valleys in mountain area and have a great time as we look at all the beautiful things around us, living such a happy life full of joy and peace In God's new kingdom. this calmed me down so much I just went to bed at 11:00 PM I got up I think four times just relaxed in bed thinking about nothing.. got up at 9 AM. This was my best experience ever so far since having insomnia for a long time. I learned everything from watching over 75 recovery insomnia talks, thank you very much Daniel Erichsen.

    This is what I fear as well. Not only the fatigue of the day after no sleep, but also my appearance. Since I’ve had insomnia for the past few months my eyes have aged 10 years. Big bags and sags have taken over. Deep sadness for the loss of normal sleep is also part of this picture. Gone is the bright shiny happy rested look. I’m not sure that men feel this loss (of attractiveness) as much as some women do. Thank you for showing us this fear/fatigue loop. It’s helpful.

      I’ve simply accepted that maybe I no longer look my best but that this is perfect preparation for growing old. No joke, it truly is a lifetime goal to become at least 80-something. Personally I have not yet met an oldie who still looks super hot. 😮

    I think one other way to overcome the fatigue that comes with insomnia is to see your body as only a medium that carries the real you and you can still push your body to achieve things

      You are so wise! If I may ask, what would you suggest for someone who, not only fatigue, but also experience extreme diziness and constant low blood pressure after sleepless nights. I keep saying to myself that life is short and it is okay to have no control over my sleep ability, but I feel like deep down my brain is not buying it and keeping me in fear of death/ sickness.

    Practice breathing in a way that feels comfortable to you: inhale and exhale say in your mind softly: let it go relax forehead.. breathe let it go relax temples, breathe let it go relax all the muscles around my eyeballs, breathe let it go relax mouth, breathe let it go relax all the muscles inside my mouth, breathe let it go relax cheekbones, let it go relax cheeks, let it go relax eyebrows, let it go relax entire jaw, let it go relax entire face, let it go relax every muscle all around my head, breathe let it go relax and work down the body until you get to your toes. you will feel more comfortable after a couple minutes, sometimes it feels so relaxing to just: [ breathe and say in your mind: let it go relax ]. you can do this anytime of the day sitting or laying down, you can practice this just about anytime. you can instantly feel happy, full of joy or completely at peace just by thinking of a time in your past when you were feeling this way, for me I felt this way when I was going for walks along the Creek at Oak Creek Canyon north of Sedona Arizona I would pick blackberries turnover rocks looking for worms to go fishing, I was a teenager very happy just enjoying life to the fullest! picture that time in your mind breathe Let it go I feel so happy, breathe let it go happy, breathe let it go full of joy, breathe let it go I feel great! breathe let it go I feel my very best!

    I have learned a lot from your videos and enjoyed 2 of your books (Set it and Forget it and Natto). Just wondering your thoughts when you have "locked in" thoughts about insomnia. For example, I had a sales meeting to go to the next day but the "thought" that I won't sleep at the hotel is "locked in" to my brain and I can't shake it. I have basically convinced myself that I won't sleep - which ultimately leads to not sleeping because I already have pre convinced myself of it even though that may not be the case. I know your thought patterns are a key part of the insomnia journey put would like your thoughts when you have "convinced" yourself that you won't sleep and you can't shake that thought or how to be more at ease with them when it occurs.

    Anyone else have insomnia sleep about 3 hours then scared all day to sleep even though your so tired? My health anxiety scares me when im tired as i associate it with illness and death, so i fight sleep and panic 😢

      I feel you, victoria! I also experience diziness and low blood pressure. Plus next month I will undergo surgery for my ovarian cyst and I think I will die soon as I dont have enough sleep pre surgery. And I am not ready for any of it.

      Aww I really hope your surgery goes well, you will be fine, my dad who's 81 has dementia and AF, was almost refused a hernia op due to his age, illness ect, he had the hernia op was fine, then had a fall a week after his first op, he broke his hip had another surgery and again bounced back, he gave me hope for operations, he's only a tiny little man and he smashed it, I'm sure you will do, my dad was classed as high risk due to his health and age, but he had 2 big ops and was absolutely fine and recovered well.
      I do meditate a lot and I have started using magnesium salts in a bath, then magnesium cream and a spray , maybe try this ❤

    I get dizzy when I don't sleep, get chest pains, and dizzy and out of breath when I move on tired days. It's been 6 years without a decent week of sleep. I thought I was dying the first year but now I'm worried about the health issues it's caused. Doctors haven't looked into the health issues, they just talk about sleep hygiene but I feel like I've tried everything. Some days I can't leave my bed because of the dizziness and doctors not helping it feels like I'm pulled into a black hole and it will never get better.

      Hang in there Sage, you know how when someone has upsetting new for us, they say “please sit down” because we can get dizzy and even fall. This is very common in our community, and when we feel we aren’t alone and that what we are going through no longer is strange or us, this can help much

    I slept zero hours last night and feel an absolute wreck. I know that if I had to, I'd do whatever was needed, but I feel so bad. I really admire those who seem to face it with courage. I'm not ready to yet 😢

I have a new event in my life that has consumed my thoughts and made me feel quite excited but also nervous / putting a lot of pressure on myself to show up well.     Unfortunately I’ve developed sleep anxiety. I didn’t get any yesterday but hope to get some tonight. I need to just accept the fact that I have this and will sometimes not sleep. I need to accept that it will happen when it happens. I hope these videos help me. 3 weeks ago my sleeping was fine.

      At the moment I am using wakeful nights to read books I enjoy and to chip away at a few foreign languages. . I no longer attempt to learn Mandarin characters bcuz frankly I never enjoyed that. Might my approach work for you, what I have come to call “Night School”? 🤔 📚 🏫

    This was it for me, it isn't the fatigue though, it wasn't mentioned...
    When I can't sleep at all I'm not afraid of the fatigue the next day it's more my mental state.
    I feel like my sense of reality has dimmed and like I'm floating all day. I hate it and I feel very depressed like that.
    That is what keeps me up, not the fear of the fatigue/tiredness but the fear of my mental state.
    I was getting better for the first half of the year and this summer I relapsed and had the worse sleep...last week was hell...I barely slept an hour everyday....
    I hope I can get back on track...I feel so sad..

      Hang in there Johnny… so glad things got easier and sorry there’s been more struggle lately. We call this feeling groundless, it’s quite common when we have some strong emotions, like when we get some sudden news we can all feel this, but also when we have some ongoing strong emotions… I plan to make more content on groundlessness, but yes hang in there and we are rooting for you

    Hey Daniel, hope this reaches you: The fear/fatigue loop really resonates with me as I have learned this unconscious behavior over years of taking in bad information about the consequences of bad sleep.
    My fear is specifically relating to athletic performance suffering as a result of a poor night’s sleep (of course the mainstream tells us that anything less than 8 hours will ruin your body!)
    Do you have any insight or studies referencing this that show that sleep duration or quality has no detrimental effect on physical performance? Still being able to function makes sense, but how well? Appreciate your work and I hope this will give me and others some piece of mind.

    Hi brother you talk about like it's the easiest thing to do and actually I struggle with this for such a long time. I tried everything start at meditation for two hours everyday on it to the extreme case wich is sleeping drugs. And still, I have hard nights mainly before day with a lot activity and I can't just leave this fear. I will be happy for more tips for this

    Do you believe this endless cycle of fear can also me applied to other things when it comes to anxiety? For example, if I fear memory loss or no sense of concentration or focus then will my brain then make me purposely forget something or lose focus in order to create more fear like it does for the sleeping example you provided?

      Hi Eddied yes I do. When we are really scared, we won’t think about anything else, because the brain wants 100% focus on survival… so if we ask someone who’s having a panic attack how to boil an egg they probably won’t remember. And when we think it’s scary that we don’t remember, then we have a loop

    Hi Coach Daniel, I have a question about fear of boredom. I’m bored at night when I’m awake so nothing is distracting me. I know I probably need to find something I like to do but then that creates pressure and then the cycle continues.

    A weird trick/hack to bypass fatigue day. Get some easy activity in the morning just to kickstart that circadian rythm in( a brisk walk in the park ) than later go lay on your tummy on bed or sofa with hands hanging down. Head also a little outside. Laying on your tummy feels like you are grounding your body better to get physical rest. This way your heart rate will also drop quicker. Lay your head on your chin. You can read a book or enjoy something on your phone while doing some little stretching. Relax like that for 30, 40 minutes. Get up and if your body feels rested do a bigger stretch and a yawn. Splash some water on your face. Repeat later if needed. Closest feeling to a sleep. If a little nap kicks in even better....also fasting during that day give your digestive system some rest ( just like when you are asleep) and also feels like the perception of time moving quicker till the next opportunity (night) comes along. Sleep is just means to an end. Being rested. Actually, sleep is just one form of getting it.

    Incredible helpful videos. Just curious what you guys tell yourself when experiencing such a day where you feel exhausted and almost not able to function due to fatigue. I really want to leave that fear/fatigue loop so I‘m working on a different mindset and approach, because for me it‘s also the big fear of the next day that makes it hard……

    Hey Daniel,
    How do you guys approach "thresholds" with sleep / or lack there of? I am always okay with 1 night of no sleep, I know I can pull it together, have a good day, and perform well the next day. How do you approach the thoughts when it turns into two, three nights of little to no sleep? How does one fight the urge to not bring on sleep efforts out of concerns for safety and well-being?

    I’m new here and I have watched many of your videos and it has helped a lot. Not sure if you did a video on this but one of my fears is actually not knowing if I know how to fall asleep. Are we supposed to be thinking of what we want to dream/happy images or are we just supposed to close our eyes and quiet our mind. This is something I’m stuck on every night and it leads to insomnia because I feel like I don’t know what I’m doing 😂 I also have panic disorder so idk. Any advice ? Thank you for your videos you are amazing.

    hi daniel its been 6 years of me experiencing sleep issues.
    i am a student of graphic desighning.
    1 week ago i found out your channel after listening to you a week i had no sleep worries.
    its been 2 days the worries or this strange confusion which i always want to escape are back.
    after i listened to you i felt that i was desperately trying to escape wakeful ness. desperately forcefully trying to force my self to sleep which rarely works. i kept on tracking time at night which made me worried. at night when i go to bed i listed to your videos is it a subtle sleep effort, because i am used to listening to music while i sleep.
    now that i have some knowledge about sleep what should my night time routine befoe sleep should be?

    I think I have problems sleeping due to performance anxiety at work. The past 3 Sundays I could not sleep a wink but I still went to work anyway. I felt like going to work was empowering the first coule of times but this week I don't feel empowered, just fatigued and scared. I see I am in the loop you just described. I am going to practice on acceptance of the fatigue. That is all I can do today. I did make it to work today but feel physically thrashed and mentally drained. Learng to be kind to myself but it can be hard sometimes. Is acceptance a form of self love? How can you be kind to yourself in moments like this? How do I implement self kindness without it feeling like it's such an effort? Tired and confused. How do I show myself kindness without all the effort?

The short take will be something like - it’s the fear that we won’t sleep that makes us worry about being too stimulated BUT of course common sense is helpful, I wouldn’t check my bank account just before going to bed if I’ve been worried about finances!

      @@thesleepcoachschool8192 thanks but I meant more along the lines of feeling stimulated in a happy way - either excited about something occurring, or something passed, or good news - not necessarily negative but preventing sleep. Sometimes my overactive brain seems to be unable to calm down properly even for no apparent reason, when it should be shutting down for sleep. I don’t feel insomnia is always about worry

    Before my insomnia I use to take part in bodybuilding competitions and building muscle requires atleast 6 hours of sleep and I always get worried at night time that I won’t be able to go to the gym the next day is there anything I can do or tell myself to fix this loop. thank you

      I too was always told that a successful bodybuilder needs at least 6 hours of sleep per night. I question that now : is it Gym Science or Real Science…? I’ve decided btw that it’s just DUMBBELL BS!

      @@1timbarrettfrom my experience with weightlifting and insomnia I’m only ever able to progress my weights when I get 5 hours of sleep, if I get any less I won’t be able to lift as heavy and won’t put on muscle

      One of the comments on SCS suggested the mantra “Just Do It AFRAID”, and guess what? I am recently home from a 40th-anniversary visit to noisy Amsterdam, where the food was laughably bad and I slept poorly half of the nights, yet I still had a GREAT TIME…! 😮

    I don't have anxiety-related insomnia. My mind is calm and still. I actually look forward to getting into bed. But, I still have severe insomnia. A lot of people are like me. CBTi doesn't help because we're doing everything right. I suspect there's a genetic component or in some cases changes in the brain after years of chronic insomnia.

      By no anxiety what do you mean? You get in bed, your heart doesn’t race fast? You can’t feel your heartbeat? You don’t have scary thoughts of what if I can’t sleep forever?

      @@user-zq4dj9ph3k No. I'm relaxed. I have gentle, calm thoughts. Or I do little word games in my head. When it starts getting to be around 3 or 4 in the morning, then I start getting frustrated. A busy mind is not what causes my insomnia because only very rarely is my mind busy at night. And sometimes I'm in a twilight state between being fully awake and the first stage of sleep. So I have ZERO thoughts. This can last for hours. However my brain doesn't enter the five stages of sleep. I wake up feeling horrific.
