- Monthly test of my Federal Signal Thunderbolt 1000T tornado warning siren. Both the alert and attack functions were tested in this video. Matt (videogamer24385) did the honors for activating the "alert" cycle, and I activated the "attack" signal via remote. Listen for the echoes.

This sound has been apart of the lives of many generations in the Midwest. Anyone living there instantly will recognize it's sound.
My town still has 5 and one of them is only a few blocks from me.
Yup. Ha. It’s so crazy to me that Even now as a 30 year old grown adult (who has lived in New England for 10 years so it’s been a long time since I’ve personally heard it), the sheer panic and fight or flight mode my body goes into when I hear this siren is funny.
The Midwest gets the best sirens, wish we had some interesting ones everywhere here
I grew up in Wisconsin right across the street from one of these. Loud AF. 12pm every Saturday and when there was a tornado nearby
And the south, too!
I remember being woken up from a deep sleep in college because of a Thunderbolt siren. This was in 2005 and it was 7:00 AM. It had been raining the night before. When the unmistakable growl of a Thunderbolt shook me out bed, I looked out the window of my apartment and the sky had a yellowish tinge mixed with some boiling, very black low clouds. I could also see both city and university police staging at the nearest intersection. I headed for the laundry room, but got caught up in the maelstrom of panicked-but-curious students. Some used the occasion to actually do their laundry. As for the tornado itself, it touched down just outside town, off to the west, heading east-northeast - right towards us. Thankfully, it was summer semester and instead of 12,500 panicking students across campus, there was maybe a couple thousand. Further, the tornado was rated F-0, not EF-0 (it was a couple years before the Enhanced Fujita scale was implemented, anyway). It dissipated before it could reach too far into town. Great times.
Wow, 2005. That's my birthyear! (So it was 17 years ago)
I remember hearing the sirens during the Joplin tornado 4 hours away but our sirens sounded too so idk but I remember being in the basement in perfect safety (lots of hills in my area so tornadoes don’t touch down or go towards my immediate area. Correct me if I’m wrong) my dad had a SFX app and tricked me into thinking that my elementary school was about to get destroyed. I was 4-5.

Jefferson Steelflex never heard any siren in my life but whelens
The Thunderbolt sound still makes my skin crawl. I live in tornado alley and used to live pretty close to one. Many a very stormy night did it wake me up. A horrible sound to break you from your sleep into instant panic and fear till you can unfray your nerves.

@@loveanlife7084 In the 1960's, those weren't used for severe weather but were for air raid and nuclear attack. Tested statewide once a week at noon. There was a lot of tension between the United States and Russia back then, plus our nation was involved in a war in Southeast Asia where Russi and China were supporting the enemy. Germany was also separated into two countries by the "Iron Curtain". Communism was (and still is) a serious thret to the free world and particularly the United States. For those who don't know much about tornado sirens, the thunderbolts run off of a blower and a chopper. The blower is powered by a single motor that spins a belt blowing air up to the siren head through a tube. Once it gets to the head it goes into the chopper intake and goes out to holes going out the horn. On the 1003 models, there are solenoids that block of ether chopper hole. Yeah I am sure that if you watch this video you already know this.
I am starting a petition to change the term tornado siren to sex alarm because its funny
That was in nice condition!!!!!

Am I having Deja Vu or do I remember you?
This was the siren by my old house in the 90’s, it seemed like the end of the world when you hear this sound. Miss them
That whirl up is terrifying
💯
The Thunderbolt will rein forever! I grew up in the 70’s hearing this from my childhood 🙂
I grew up in the 80’s listening to one like this in my little town. Every weekend they would test it at a certain hour, for functionality... I guess.

Everyone here saying how awesome thunderbolts are and i'm just here like holly crap this is like the only 2011 siren video with both HD and non ear-bleedingly bad audio.
I think an in-depth video of this piece of equipment is in order, I wanna know about the blower and how the control wiring works, what you had to do to restore it and so forth. It would be much appreciated.
I actually had to remove this siren a couple of weeks ago - we just sold our house. Definitely was a sad day, but the news isn't sad for long. It's going to get another full re-restoration (using far superior quality again this time) and I will definitely shoot a video on that progress, installation at our new place and an explanation of how it works!
Interesting to see you’ve put a red light on its pole and what is the anemometer for? 🇬🇧
I can do that for you no problem. Follow my channel and see my videos on these
Just a little update - the siren is still down but it’s going to be restored again (this time powdercoated!) so whenever I can finally afford property in my area… a video going through the whole process will be in order
She looks amazing! I love the little flashing red light you got on there. Fantastic...
That startup echo though😍
Can you update us on this siren, and maybe explain how you have the remote activation set up?
Still sends chills down my spine.
The spool up and wind down of this beast is siiick
This is childhood. I can't explain how this siren makes me feel both nostalgic and nervous at the same time.
Awe man, that is the scariest sound, I appreciate you downloading the video I remember back in the day of the '88 tornado, it was rough.
4th grade, summer, outside for Phys Ed. 1pm rolls around and the sky blue Fed Sig Thunderbolt 1000T went off. It was probably 50 yards away on a large mound hill. Scared the crap out of me, and was damn loud. Though I love the sound this and the ACA Allertor 125 (that's the funky oval top horn with the chopper at the bottom section). These two sirens where everywhere in MN. We had a few others, but those two were the main.
The upper horn is a Projector and the Bottom horn is an Intake
That startup was the coolest shit I ever heard growing up
I can see why nick loved this one so much
These sirens are still my favorite.

Sweet siren!!! I miss having the thunderbolts in my area. Anytime one went off for a tornado warning, My skin would literally crawl. People actually took warnings seriously too. And they actually worked; those Whelan sirens we have now seem to break down and fail a lot during testing. Plus they sound terrible!!! You most definitely got a healthy sounding siren!!!

These are so amazing and the sound carries really well. I could hear them in the basement from blocks away during tornadoes in the city where I grew up. Currently, we have electronic sires (I think?) and I have to open the windows or go outside to hear if they're really going off. Has to be some lowest bidder crap.
This thing sounds absolutely great!
Ok, I have followed you for years and how did you get permission to use the sire? Or do you test it whtn your county tests theres?

I grew up in the cold war era in Tucson Arizona on the Northwest side. We had these throughout the area. I remember when they used to test them how loud they were.
The San Onofre power plant where I live has a thunderbolt on top of one of its buildings. I don’t think they use it, but it has been rotated.
The only sirens I’m ever going to hear is the dust/sand storm sirens in AZ
Was listening to this and then the emergency alert system came up on the TV in my living room....is this what I think it is??? Nah just a coincidence.
Edit: also just now on 6-4-18 I was listening to this and the siren in my town went off.

Think I've commented on this video before but it came up again so just had to come back and say how amazing it looks and sounds! Thunderbolts are untouchable in the siren world! 🔊😍
I would say the Hurricane is more likely untouchable than this siren, wayyyyy too common.
@@rainyrec I love the hurricane too. I wish we had more sirens here in the UK.... We have a good few systems in place for plants/factories etc, but mainly in England. We do have some systems here in Scotland too, but not many in comparison 😩 wish we had loads like America but we aren't big enough for that many and we don't have as many reasons as America to have them like tornadoes etc 🔊

When My brother of 3 years walk in the night:
We have one of these where I live, it's the exact same pitch and procedure too, it's loudest when it faces you, and when it is, it drowns out the other siren, I don't remember what it is, on the other side of town.
There used to be lots of these around Minneapolis. I miss them now. It sounded like they were all set at different speeds, creating an oddly musical effect.

Whenever I was younger I used to watch your firealarm videos all the time what happened to those?
Grew up in suburban Chicago where they put up one of these beasts 0.7 miles from my home, I believe in the spring of 1970, as the town was expanding; there was already an Allertor in the older part of town, about which, as a very young lad, I never knew anything until after the Thunderbolt went up in '70. The Thunderbolt was even closer to the school I attended, right across the street from it. Always freaked me out when I was a kid.
