- May 15th, 2014. Went to St. Paul, Nebraska to record their Thunderbolt 1003. My dad works with a guy from the fire department there and said they test the fire signal on the 15th of the month, so I had to go see.
Any reproduction or distribution of the contents of this video for commercial purposes without written permission from Tyler Shaw will result in legal action taken against the offending parties.
NOTE: It is NOT mounted solely on a tall standpipe nor does it even have a standpipe. The air from the blower passes through the pole to get to the siren head. It isn't going to fall. Comments regarding it "falling over" will result in me replying in a snarky manner.

The thunderbolt is arguably the most famous and innovative siren in history. It was able to do Steady, Wail, Alternating Steady, Alternating Wail, Pulse, Pulse Wail, Undulating Hi-Lo, Growl, and Fast Wail (this one had to be done manually). What makes it more impressive is that it was invented in 1952. Truly remarkable piece of equipment.

Mostly the 1003 series when this siren launched it out won the 1000 series because the extra signals it could do thanks! To the two solenoids the high and the low tone

This tone was used in the event of a nuclear attack in the civil defense days. A steady wail was used for tornadoes being the Cold War is over many serins of older origins still use the hi-lo tone. Clearly it grabs the attention as intended

@@dfwrproductions Both solenoids open and close at the same time rather than alternating, which causes the sound to "pulse". Pulse wail is the same thing but with the attack signal.

I've seen so many "what siren is scariest" youtube shorts and I never see this one on the list. Alternate wail is practically supernatural sounding.

There's nothing wrong with it. It's a steel light pole anchored into solid concrete. Steel flexes. The thing has been there for 60 years and has taken 80+mph winds before. It'll be fine.

There is a "Refurbished" Thunderbolt 1003 all they did was repaint it. It's in Derby KS
If you go to Olney Texas there is a working 1003 right in the middle of the town

Too bad we don’t have tornado sirens in my area. I love seeing them. I saw the rare ACA Hurricane in Milwaukee, WI in July 2018. There’s a new FS 508 by my grandmas house that replaced a 2t22 and the new siren was moved to her house.

Update: The Tilly Thunderbolt 1003 has been replaced with a Gurio-Umino Tempest 128 because it fell over and caught fire.
Nope it was replaced temporarily in 2018 and got refurbished and switched to 4/5 port because the 5/6 burned. And came back in 2021

I'm confused on the story on this siren... In this video (2014) it was a 5/6 port, and then in 2017 there was a 4/5 port, and then after that they swapped the head with the 5/6 that doesn't rotate?

They triage you on scene, and do all the medications and everything from the fire truck. Then when the ambulance shows up, they just package you up, put an bow on you, and send you to the hospital.

Is the direction and speed of rotation due to the pullies and wiring in the box directly under that fabulous horn?
The speed of the rotation was supposed to function like that i think.
@@budgie508 ive seen videos of Thunderbolts being rehabbed by collectors, there is a gearbox with a motor and 3-step pullies on each one inside the box below the horn. Also, the motor can be wired to go either direction, i learned that in a class about electrical devices. The rotation and speed are different from one manufacturerer to another, except for those that dont rotate. If i was younger, i would have been thrilled to have a Thunderbolt to "play with", but that would have upset my late wife to no end! She did put up with my trains and lawnmower hobbies, and i appreciate her for that.
