Would you still recommend this machine today? I’m just starting out in this world and just looking to get into it!
It's been a long time since that machine so I would suggest looking into more current models. For home use this was fine but it is very slow for any type of commercial work. Just be sure how it fits your needs

Think this will work to embroider hats ?
No. You could make a patch and sew that to a hat but with the bed on machines like this a hat just would not fit.
