I disagree with the caption ... the Ryanair pilot did a great sideslip to counteract the crosswind. The telephoto lens created the illusion that the wing tip was close to the ground.
I've come to expect any video with Ryanair in it to be bad, but that was a skilled landing. An LDA approach with a nasty crosswind, it was beautiful. Now if other Ryanair pilots could nail an easy approach that well.....
I have to agree... that was an extremely tough approach on the best of days and that was blowing a gale of a crosswind... Some pretty good flying in my book imo and that wasn't even close to a crash or wing strike...
I have been a passenger in a plane that had serve side wind gusts blowing while trying to land. Well bringing the plane in sideways with immediate straightening up worked after a few bumps etc. But we were al safe and thanked him.👏👏👌👍
Nothing very strange about the landing in Madeira by Ryanair... Most of the times there are strong crosswinds at Madeira airport that make it very hard to do a stabilized approach... Probably one of the most difficult airports to land in the World! It's a test to the pilots skills!
First clip with Ryan air at Madeira... not saying that it wouldn't have been better to go around (or even divert to another airport), but holy &$^# that was some impressive aircraft handling.
Yep; same. I was expecting a float or a bounce or something, but they got it on the centerline, kept it down, and it looked reasonably smooth (by Ryanair standards anyway).
Just watching that was a wild ride. Ok, ok, whoa, ok, WHOA, nice, Bang! Centerline. All of that to absolutely stick the centerline in crazy crosswinds.
That wasn’t what I was expecting considering how often Ryanair gets trashed… Excellent landing under extreme conditions… Kudos to the aircraft Captain! 👍🏼🍻😎
sorry, the first one was a fuc...g genius! it may looked like the wing is close to earth but look on the shadow, it was far from it, just genius skills!
I never understand why people seem to think Ryanair have firmer landings than other airlines. Surely it’s just dependent on conditions, same as any other airline. Ryanair don’t exactly train their pilots to do hard landings or have less go-arounds than other airlines. They have an exceptional safety record.
Your video title is totally unfair spin. You say the pilot "Almost Crashes Plane". That sounds like "pilot royally screwed up". To me it looks like the pilot did an excellent job landing under difficult conditions.
Why did the British Airways jet at 1:00 take off again, were they doing touch and go's ? It looks to me as if the plane was happily on the ground with plenty of runway left. Great flying by the Ryan air pilot, misleading title??????.
How do you know the Ryanair approach was unstable? What criteria are you using to make that claim? A challenging approach does not mean it was unstable. A wing strike doesn’t mean the approach was unstable.
Dude, that Ryanair pilot needs a raise. O_O That was an impressive landing in strong crosswinds. And they hit center of the runway. That's a testament to that pilot's skills.
What ? That title should be renamed to "Skillful Ryanair pilot makes a successfully difficult landing". He/she was nowhere near crashing. Sorry but you get a downvote for this.
I've just reviewed the approach plates for runway 05 at Madeira. The video doesn't seem to bear much resemblance to the published visual approach path where the aircraft is expected to be lined up with the runway at Rosario 1.1nm from the threshold at a minimum altitude of 460 feet QNH. The Ryanair flight is still turning as it crosses the runway threshold.(note the shadow). I think if I'd been flying that approach in the sim there would have been a few choice words from the training captain afterwards - like "what the f%%% was that all about?!?!?". I don't think that pilot will be celebrating the (lucky/fortunate) landing and won't be boasting of his exploits on RUclips. Airline flying is about safety, not military-style fighter approaches!!! With all due respect what the general public sees as 'heroic' is not usually contained with the airline's SOPs. Oh, and remember a superior pilot is one who avoids situations that require the use of his/her superior skills. Retired B737 pilot, flying instructor and flight examiner
Ryan Air flight was not unstabelized. You can hear the wind in the video and the pilots were in a crab for the crosswind that makes it appear that the flight was "unstable."
Clickbait video title: Ryanair Pilot Almost Crashes Plane. Translation: "It was a normal Ryanair landing". Okay, actually a skilled landing under difficult wind conditions. (Editor's note: if Funchal was limited to stable approaches only, they would have plane service there once every two weeks or so). Iceland scenes...way cool (or hot!!). A380 "high lift system" with slats and flats...is this any different than any other aircraft?
bro yesterday took a flight for the second time in my life and i can feel every small movement, and when it goes down i get the same feeling that when a rollercoaster goes down from the top, i cant imagine what that people felt omfg
There's an element of truth here. Ryanair work to ridiculously short turnaround times (i.e. getting the passengers off and a new load on). They plan 25 min turnaround slots whereas other airlines plan 1h. So a go-around is to be avoided if it can be done so safely. This is also the reason why they land the planes with a hard thump - to reduce the risk of missing the turn-off to their gate and having to take the next turn-off, which would add valuable minutes to the gate time. That plus the fact that Ryanair order 737s with steel brake discs rather than the more expensive ceramic option, so once the plane is down it needs to stay down and brake hard. Source: Close family member was a Ryanair 737 pilot.
I am a commercial pilot since 1970 and the Ryanair pilot did an awesome text book performance for landing in a high velocity crosswind landing. This is just another typical exaggeration from this channel trying to make pilots look bad. Probably from someone that wanted to be a pilot and don’t have what it takes to be one.
Dumb question, but why do a go-around if you already have all wheels on the ground for a handful of seconds? What's the worst that can happen if you're already fully on the ground?
The pilot may have floated past the touchdown markings on an already short runway, and by the time he finally got all wheels down, may have decided there wasn't enough room to safely stop. I've heard it makes for a lot of paperwork if you damage the aircraft. Oof!
I wish internet nobodies would stop criticising Ryan air. That Funchal approach is so tough. The industry doesn’t allow bad pilots to fly that approach.
There may be a requirement for wings level by 500ft on approach, but this may not apply here because of the requirement to turn base instead of being established on a LOC.
I've seen similar landing videos from Osaka Itami Airport in heavy cross-wind conditions. It may look ridiculous but the pilot is purposely flying into the wind until the very last minute. Ryanair looked like a highly-skilled landing.
Luckily "almost"only counts in Horseshoes. For all that can be said about Ryan Air one thing is it carries the 3rd highest amount of passengers in the world and never had a passenger fatality. Airlines 1,2, and 4 can't claim that.
@@jamessimms415 you have no idea how much this airline emphasises on safety and training. It's not down to luck if they never had a serious incident. Nothing is done without a purpose in aviation

yeah, his video captions/titles are always clickbaity. good vids, though.
Crab, not slip
Agreed. It was not an unstable approach. Nor was it a near wing-tip strike. Well executed cross wind landing if you ask me
I agree with you.
Yep! Telephoto lens distorts all sorts of things. Mountain ranges made to look closer in Hotel/Motel webpages etc etc.
Kudos to the Ryanair pilot, outstanding skills.
For real, that was not that close to a wingstrike, he was still pretty high up
Right on the center line 👍

That was impressive alright! Imagine doing that landing in extreme winds with your RC plane.

That was not very close to a wingstrike. Perspective is everything here, especially from that angle things tend to look a bit weird.
Indeed, no way it could come out all right after being at such an angle to be able to wingstrike.

Harder landings saves tires. Ryanair makes revenue by landing bit hard.
I've read they do have firmer landings because it's safer and that's how Boeing specifies a 737 should be landed
It's become a meme. Nothing sinister. People like hyping things ... All great marketing.
Ryan air, not an unstabilized approach. They got hit by a bad crosswind, but the pilots handled it professionally.
