"most people who claim to be tone deaf are just unfamiliar with their voices. most of our wrong notes are really just the result of nervous tension" "You do not have to write your own lyrics to sing. Reinterpretation offers you the opportunity to say something deeply personal through words and music that you identify with. With that framework already in place, you don't have to search blindly to express what's inside of you, and you gain the opportunity to learn about yourself" love it.
I teach singing and I am very happy to know that these ideas, which I employ in my work, are surfacing all over the place. Singing is a human right and everyone should make it their own. Singing does not exist as a "thing" - it only happens when someone starts to sing. She is doing a good thing, telling people about the power they have, but do not always use. I love the idea of saying 'making noise' rather than 'warming up the voice' ... it's true. Most people have wonderful noises that they make that simply don't have the "singing" label. Moving away from destructive self-criticism is the most important message!
There are no words. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have used singing, intuitively, for all the reasons she puts forth here - while retiring my brain to recover from a chronic illness, to teach myself self acceptance, courage, and to build strong bonds with my 5 children once I returned to mothering. What an experience to hear her lay out all the science (that I am somewhat familiar with in different contexts) that I have experienced in my own healing. Just wow. And what an experience to hear her, and at such a time in her life. What a gift this is ❤️❤️😍🙏
Is this random that I am from the Czech Republic watching this English Ted talk where she sings one of the most famous song of our great composer Antonín Dvořák in Czech? Wow! Made me cry!
I love singing, i just don't have what i call the sound space to feel i can use it to it's full potential. Sometimes i wish i could move to the middle of nowhere just so i could. Tell me i'm not the only one afraid of what the neighbors will think.
haha me too , but just only for 1 month , I get better and make less stupid sound when I started , Finnaly my mom and my younger sis can approve when i sing :)) Maybe you can go karoke with close friend or fing cheap karaoke for only you to sing :)) ! I Do it like 3-4 hours every time i go to Karaoke with friends
A lot of it is learning to stop caring. I close the windows cause I like to blast the music I sing to and don't want to be a nuisance as far as sound levels go, But I'm well aware that the sound still carries through the walls cause I hear my neighbors playing piano, drums, sax, or flute.
music heals when medication can't. I have epilepsy and I love music. When I was at school when my epilepsy started my education turned upside down but my music could never be taken away from me.
i can feel your passion through your speech and i thoroughly encourage you to continue following your passion and you're right , singing can help people get though bullying , i was bullied but through singing became confident in myself and so wasnt bullied singing is a true gift which all should use
Music is 70% hearing and 10% skill and another 20% effort and discipline to practice. Since so much of music is mathematical, in my 55 years as a musician, I would venture to say that I could teach 99% of the population how to sing or play the guitar if they will simply learn to listen. I don't think the wrong notes are always due to nervous tension. I suspect most of the time, it's due to not willing or able to hear the notes and find a way to hit them.
Music has always been a huge part of my life but I was too afraid to sing thinking I had a 'bad voice' recently I have started singing almost daily to my cat :) it has been wonderful. My cat is sick and I am chronically ill. It really lifts me up and makes me laugh. My cat responds by purring and I through in a few high notes to startle him. Smoky jazz numbers suit my voice best I have found.
Thank you for sharing that beautiful, thought-provoking presentation. Your voice is incredible. I hope your family has the best of health and happiness.
This speech is amazing and really resonated with me, really inspiring words ❤️ music really is the greatest joy in the world and it is an amazing thing to dance and sing. Her point on using other people's words and melodies to express what is personal to you hit the nail on the head about how it feels for me when I sing, I loved this ♥️
Like you said people who have had a stroke can sometimes sing much better than they can talk. People who stutter can also sing fine even though when they talk they stutter. People often with neurological disorders have a good ear for music.
Nice messages, very uplifting and fantastic voice. You remind me of the absolute love of my life, my choice of every day. Or is it I who sees her everywhere? Anyway, you are very beautiful. Excellent discourse.
Marcelo Bassalo Reminds me of a solo in church. The mic was cracking & popping only it was really bad, it hurt my face as l used ever muscle in fighting off the laughter.
I think actually the mic could handle the highest levels before clipping, of all the rest of the system components. It sounded more to me like a loudspeaker breaking up. The speakers are typically capable of handling less power than the amps driving them can deliver. This is by design, because they're the cheapest components to replace, if system overloading occurs. With bigger, stronger speakers, the danger of blowing the amps increases, since the system can then be run louder without speaker breakup, but consequently strains the expensive amps. Also, standardized electronics troubleshooting always starts at the output end of something & works its way back toward the input end. So in the case of a bad speaker, it's always great when you find the problem quickly, with the first component you normally check. Not to get too technical, though. It's just that many working sound crews hear that same, familiar loudspeaker breakup, more than they'd prefer, over the course of time. In a way, this noise serves them, as a reminder that they're running the system a little too loud.
Ah! What she talks about around 11 minutes (mirror cells) is something I noticed about myself! When I'm listening to music, especially many of my favorite songs, it's as if I'm warming up my voice without vocalizing.
Katie!!! Brava fire child. I hope to stumble on you more. Best - Jen E.D Sing and Relax and Unleash the Hearts Academy. Combining Civic engagement and Artistry for a better tomorrow.
I AM A TENOR OPERA SINGER, AND HWO TALK TO MUCH ABOUT SINGING, IS NOT A GOOD SINGER, AND EVERY BODY CAN SING, BUT NOT EVERYONE CAN SING GOOD, TO BE A OPERA SINGER, GOD BLESS SOMEONE WITH SPECIAL VOICE,
It can lessen loneliness and depression. The key word.. lessen but not enough to stop some singers from committing suicide. Having said that I'll take it. Depression is hard. I'll take all the help I can get.
russ mac Do it.....do it NOW and everyday!! Im a depression sufferer as well and Im finally able to get through my days of uncertainty without tears and fears. I encourage you to take a deep breath and sing your way into milder depression episodes until they become few and far between.
After yet another sleepless night I forced myself to overcome agoraphobia go to a singing lesson today. My soul is once more filled with joy and a glimpse of optimism. Hang in there!
Such a powerful and informative presentation. Especially after watching Ysaye Barnwell's TEDTalk on the importance of collective singing. Only thing that marred it was the use of the g* slur. :(
Alzheimer's patients often can still sing in stead of talk, especially if it is songs they knew in their youths. Also we have had reponses from non-responsive patients in hospice care in the last days of their lives. PS What a shame about the microphone she is using at the end when she sings Dvorzak and the mike can't handle the volume. Beautifully sung otherwise.
Yeah nah, I took voice class in high school and both my girlfriend at the time, as well as my voice teacher, had this "anyone can sing given the proper instruction" mantra which they both retracted and apologized for after the semester was over and they were unable to get the results they expected from me. Fortunately I am a decent guitar player so no one asks me to sing, but yeah it's really annoying when someone comes along with the "everybody can (activity) with the proper instruction" because it's just not true or fair really
Ah, the mic is not synced for her....I should think diaphramatic control would be a bit difficult with weight of child nestled therein womb...Much enjoyed her presentation from beginning to end.
Two comments. First, if you're not sustaining your tone on purified vowels and retuning your FORMANT spaces to match your harmonics, you're not singing. Second, don't sing in your car, the space is modified to damp road noise and produce cancellation of sections of the audio spectrum. Consolidating faulty technique should not be your accidental intention.
Cheers for this, I've been looking for "spiritual guide meditation" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Banulian Lonameron Breakthrough - (just google it ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my brother in law got cool results with it.
Listening to your voice in a tape is horrible Makes you don't want to open your F mouth again Imagine hearing you own voice singing in a tape as a bad singer. I did thanks to this Well I suck
The ideas are worth sharing but starting and ending with hard luck stories is not real TED. So what about her mole? I almost stopped watching. It’s such a cliché. Every single person on earth has a hard life in a way that’s very personal to them. It’s the point of life apparently. So let’s share ideas and take more time exploring them and less time sharing how we feel sorry for ourselves.
nursuitan, you're kinda right, four" too many unnecessary words" from you. Better luck next time, Firstly embrace the spirit, and it's not ALL about YOU, Her delivery was probably just about right for the majority of people fortunate enough to be there. Don't think, feel. You're welcome, I know, I know, sometimes, but not all the time, can't say it's never happened, but if my memory serves me correctly, I'm pretty sure I did the same kind of thing myself,at some point in the not too distant past, I myself did the same thing and used four words too many to try to convey my propensity for excellent speaking and writing skills.
"most people who claim to be tone deaf are just unfamiliar with their voices. most of our wrong notes are really just the result of nervous tension"

love it.
As a vocal coach, I could not agree more. I laughed and almost cried listening to Katie Kat'speech. Let's sing guys, let's sing!
My Happy Voice I'm looking for a vocal coach, where do you reside? I'm in Chicago
My Happy Voice just subscribed to your channel!
Her face is so expressive and her voice is so heartwarming. Thanks for this, so inspiringg.

This lady has a breathy speaking voice, I expect she will be the same when she sings. Breathy tone is wasteful and is largely white noise.
I go to the office very very very early every morning to sing. Feels absolutely fabulous!
A lot of it is learning to stop caring. I close the windows cause I like to blast the music I sing to and don't want to be a nuisance as far as sound levels go, But I'm well aware that the sound still carries through the walls cause I hear my neighbors playing piano, drums, sax, or flute.
Beautiful lecture and beautiful song. Thank you, Ms. Kat.
music heals when medication can't. I have epilepsy and I love music. When I was at school when my epilepsy started my education turned upside down but my music could never be taken away from me.
Thank you for your insight and inspiration, Amanda!
Im glad for you! Music really is the best!

One of the Best Tedx ever...
Thank you Katie
Oh my God! How her la la la is so beautiful and soft!!!

Brava! I intend to sing in the supermarket and walking downtown too! Thank you for this beautiful message.
Beautiful inspiration.🦋

Her heart beat is soothing me.
Omg, thank you so much! It's just so spot on rn for me! She's amazing!
Like you said people who have had a stroke can sometimes sing much better than they can talk. People who stutter can also sing fine even though when they talk they stutter. People often with neurological disorders have a good ear for music.
Thank u all very much
aww
PLEASE try singing again! Overcome the blockage from your earlier life. You will feel so much freer
They were probably envious. Don't let the dark take over the light.
Nice messages, very uplifting and fantastic voice.
You remind me of the absolute love of my life, my choice of every day. Or is it I who sees her everywhere? Anyway, you are very beautiful. Excellent discourse.
That mic should be ashamed of itself!
So much love in this.
The mic can't handle her.
She didn't even need it.
Marcelo Bassalo
Reminds me of a solo in church. The mic was cracking & popping only it was really bad, it hurt my face as l used ever muscle in fighting off the laughter.
actually she shud have taken it off first
some mics aren't made for high pitches, strong voices nor really low register
Even the rear walls were taking it on the chin.
I think actually the mic could handle the highest levels before clipping, of all the rest of the system components. It sounded more to me like a loudspeaker breaking up. If only her bullies as a youth could see her now! She's beautiful, smart, and personable!
Awesome talk! Thank you! :)
Well that was a breath of fresh air
Lovely❤
Thank you!!
What a beautiful soul
It can lessen loneliness and depression. The key word.. lessen but not enough to stop some singers from committing suicide. Having said that I'll take it. Depression is hard. I'll take all the help I can get.

Singing definitely helps, especially sad songs that tear you apart.
Russ can I recommend Justin Stoney? He is so gentle and easy to listen to and has helped me sing better. Jump on his channel
Pauli constantinou Damn. That is also nice. Thx
After yet another sleepless night I forced myself to overcome agoraphobia go to a singing lesson today.
My soul is once more filled with joy and a glimpse of optimism.
Hang in there!
Wow, Mother Goddess present!!!
Great talk,thankyou
Beautiful singing, too bad the mic kept bottoming out.
your are amazing and beautiful!
amazing!!!
I wanna sing now
Such a powerful and informative presentation. Especially after watching Ysaye Barnwell's TEDTalk on the importance of collective singing. Only thing that marred it was the use of the g* slur. :(
Woah! I did not see that coming
Perfect!!
Wow its so beautiful :)
NICE!
Whoever placed the mic , what better place to be
excelnte conferencia...
hi guys, the greatest results that ive had was with the Bens Singer Blog (just google it) definately the most useful idea that I have ever tried.
Where can I find the studies she mentioned? I would like to read more.
💛
Gr888est.
Singing is the only thing I do well.
I've struggled with this my whole life. I can imitate just about any singer, yet I do not have my own voice.
S D keep searching, its in there somewhere ❤️
coemba ya my lord
Yeah nah, I took voice class in high school and both my girlfriend at the time, as well as my voice teacher, had this "anyone can sing given the proper instruction" mantra which they both retracted and apologized for after the semester was over and they were unable to get the results they expected from me. I knew it! This is exactly what I believed. The endorphins and breathing etc...
can someone summarize ?
Nope
Yep.... you should sing, it’s a good thing
Distorted vocals made their way into classical singing trough this mic xD
Brendon urie who?????
sorry
Ah, the mic is not synced for her....I should think diaphramatic control would be a bit difficult with weight of child nestled therein womb...Much enjoyed her presentation from beginning to end.
Love you but I can not sing in tune only scream.
Should probably fix the typo in the description that says "If there's room and it's appropriate add;" I don't think that is supposed to be there.
don't ask me what color her voice was...
It’s always those who could sing all their lives that say that everyone can sing.
It’s nonsense
Idk why but now I feel sorry for myself.
The vocal folds kinda look like a reptilian eye lol
I can't carry a tune. Therefore I cannot sing. Simple as that
waterblonk singing is a skill, you lack the proper technique and training, that’s why you sound bad
who else is here from mrs. papizzo
+JustYourAverageSquad I'm Dawson Kemp XD

that mic should retire, oh man.

Its such a shame she had that mic.
Great singers are depressed, even commit suicide!!!
Im a singer with a perfect English but I cant understand even one word of her... she’s super hot, isnt she?
Listening to your voice in a tape is horrible
Makes you don't want to open your F mouth again
Imagine hearing you own voice singing in a tape as a bad singer.
I did thanks to this
Well I suck
But it is the worst you can get. Keep singing!

and then she gave birth to lady gaga......
too many unnecessary words
