"Think of singing as words with melody, rather than melody with words." This is a fantastic TED Talk! I watched it on a whim and I'm very glad that I did.
''THINK OF SENSATION,BEFORE PRONUNCIATION.'' So liberating,to sing your every word. And how much more meaning and expression you can add to your life by singing out your thoughts.Great mentor!
I'm so glad I say this Ted Talk the day it was posted. I love singing and have been trying to teach myself to sing using free resources, but sometimes I still hesitate to sing in front of people.
Insatiable Folie but she's right too... in my church, we have periods within a cermon where EVERYONE is meant to sing and you only ever see elder women and small children sing, never anyone else, especially boys and men... I personally think they choose not to sing as to not look "cool"
Insatiable Folie Yes... I sing in a semi-professional choir and when people ask me to sing in front of them, I literally panic. When you sing you're completely exposed to the people in front of you (you feel kinda naked) and to their judgement, that is what scares singers the most...
ap Cast That's probably because they either don't want to be there or they have no idea the words to the song. I've been going to church religiously every Sunday since I was a child (I'm an unwilling participant but yes I do go) and I still don't even remember most of the lyrics.
Paul Pruett Well it's not really pleasant to hear bad singing in the first place. Also I don't know any child that's under 10 that got made fun of for their high pitched voices considering that's pretty normal for a child that age. As for the preteens well you can't really help that. It's part of nature. It happens to everyone. Will it really create such a deep trauma for guys to fear even singing?
Insatiable Folie I think you are right that its not that singing terrifies us but its just standing in front of the audience that traumatizes us. Also I have been learning classical music for more then four years now and still if I am asked to sing in front if some guests or in a program / concert I am scared because of the audience...all I want to say is that I agree with you :)
A lot of people DO sing, in the shower, when cooking or doing household chores. I sing to myself when I walk home from work. But it would be quite embarassing for me to sing in front of people, as I have very bad childhood memories about it. Yet, I have done it sometimes, and I'm always amazed that actually, people tend to like it, if they're not professional musicians.
"do they not breathe in your country?" Oh... my...gosh... YES. When I annoy my family by singing a lot and they ask me to stop singing I just say... "That's like asking me not to breathe!" and it is so true... Life should be a musical.
As a student and friend of Janet Planet, I idolize her will tell all of you viewing this video, that her techniques work, as long as you apply them. The techniques can be awkward and frustrating to use, however you cannot build muscle unless you pick up the weights , push through the pain and repeat until muscle memory takes over, right? These techniques should be implemented at age 5 or 6, before bad habits set in. If you are fortunate enough to have Janet as your singing coach, you will also find your speaking voice improving. Like all coaching, you must apply what you are learning to reap the benefits. I am grateful to have Janet as my coach, and friend. Whether you hear her on the radio, in person at a concert, or through her studio recordings you will feel her words and tone touch your soul.
Lol! My friends in Vietnam always ask me to sing through a voice note, and although I've been told that I have somewhat of a voice, I'm still a bit scared. HA! Loved this.
I would think about a song and then sing it, you ask me to dance I'll do it, you ask me to do anything artistic I'd do it 😂 because I don't really mind what other thinks, I mean I know I don't know how to sing or dance but I'll do it just for the fun
But I'll tell you as an adult people don't take kindly to this.. I am fairly expressive and enthusiastic when I speak/ with my facial expressions and people are always giving me dirty looks
I can relate to what you said. Im somewhat expressive too. People act like its a sin to have a personality. I could pretend like I care......naaah. ;-)
1:47 I believe your brain does differentiate between singing and speaking because it uses different parts to do either. This is why people who have a stutter oftentimes CAN sing without stuttering but when it comes to speaking it's a completely different ball game.
Anyone can abbreviate. I Brasilian and im cant understand well. And the legend in ingles is a lier. I beginning the lessons of inglessh, but inchoate. And this is so relevent to me. I wanna singer, im write, thanks and peace. 😊
The background guitar music and the melodic way she speaks made this talk so engaging and enjoyable I love it

I really liked this, she's got a huge point. People lose this expressiveness the older we get

So basically we should all live in a musical.

It's not the singing part that's terrifying. It's standing in front of an audience that really scares the sh*t out of people.

Occasionally I feel as though I've been led to knowledge that I need by God. This is one of those times.

I don't like singing in front of people because I'm scared of being judged.

I think I would run as fast as I can...I'm too afraid of people to feel good about myself.

The answer is , I'd ask you who said you could sing?
I would only make you laugh by the way I sing
Amy J my voice is always amazingly funny during song presentations.
