Now that we've got the various stainless tanks and heat shields here at the shop, it's time to start doing this and that around Arabella that we put aside as we waited for their arrival. The starboard side's "main lines" of electrical conduit and get run, and we've just got news this week that we'll be seeing an electrical panel here, one of a couple, in about a month. Supply shortages are putting a delay into the electrical, but luckily, orders are still moving.
Joe "The Machinist", as he's known around here, came to work on a couple of different things, and the one we focus on here is for some custom hardware that will make it easy to beautifully mount the under-deck heat shielding that will go above the cook stove, wood stove, and diesel heater. It's always extremely satisfying to see skilled hands at the lathe.
And finally, the big project we hit in this installment involves fitting out the head with a few things, mainly the pedestal for the sink, which will act as a bit of storage, but will mostly be for hiding the drain pipe. The sink will be perched onto a surface of oak that will go over the top of the water tank, and of course, there's a cut-out for the inspection port at the top of the water tank. The composting toilet gets some pads of locust that it will sit on after it's permanently installed onto the locust shower grate.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

I want to thank you so much for the joy I get from watching you build Arabella. I am not a young man and I have been in the hospital 3 times in the past year and a half. Each time there was a real consideration that I would not survive. Aside from the normal drive I felt to defeat the devil I looked forward to see how well you were doing on this beautiful project. The wood the water and the workmanship all gave me one more drive to spit in the devils' eye and say "Not today ******* ********". Thank you so much!!!

Barometric relief dampers are used to keep the draft (air being pulled over the fire) from getting too high. A very tall stack creates a large potential to pull more air than you need. A short stack creates very little potential. The barometric relief evens the potential differences out by allowing you to move the weights around to create a small opening for a short stack or a larger opening for a tall stack. That way you pull the right amount of air over the fire and the excess is made up by the damper so that the stack, regardless of the height (within reason) works well. Good luck.

You will probably want some kind of H-style or wind following cowl on top of your chimney (which should address backflow), as well as a shutoff valve. Having an open hole from inside of the house to the outside is a terrible idea when it is below -10 C outside, it will suck an enormous amount of warm air from inside the boat really quickly, so shutoff valve is a must. As for having too much draft - this can basically never happen given how tiny your smoke stack is, but if you want to be extra certain just use H-cowl.

This is especially so with wood or diesel stoves, this is so that any creosote or other combustable residue runs back down into the combustion chamber to be reburnt rather than being allowed to run down walls or the outside of the stove creating a significant fire risk.

When i started watching you guys about 4/5 years ago, you only had about 10 videos on here, i thought wow this is stretched out over 10 videos, I'm gonna be an expert when I have watched all 10 and will be able to build my own boat 😂 😂 little did I know!! After getting through those first few videos I realised this was going to be a much longer journey and that I would learn far more than i could ever have imagined (including the fact that it is gonna take a lot more than i thought to make my own boat). I see you getting nearly to the end now and I'm kinda sad in a way, i dont want it to end! I'm so happy for you though that you have nearly made it and hope you have loads of amazing adventures.

Happy Bellota day! Seeing Steve sat on the head simulating heavy seas reminds me of the heads we had on our boat where you had to aim down a hole no more than an inch and a half in diameter. Heeled over at 30 degrees in the middle of the night was a challenge! We only had one or two significant misses amongst 20 people over 28 days. But the memories of praying for a following wind and a level head are coming back :)

Your vent should always be run the same way. The crimp side should always point upwards and out. The non crimped side should always point downwards or towards the heater. So as the hot flue gas heads out the exhaust vent they can't come back out and into the living space. Also there is a code here that says you need three screws in every joint. The vent needs to be run right or you could get CO poisoning. Love the build been watching from the beginning. Miss Alex glad you did a update on him. Keep up the quality work.

My maternal grandfather was a cabinetmaker for pretty much his entire life. As a kid, I spent a lot of summers hanging out in the workshop he had at home where, among many things, that I learned from him was how to kerf and form planks into round objects. Under his supervision, I made a small waste paper baskett out of Luan mahogany using this technique (as well as a clever dadoed clip that held the edges together from the inside!). Worked out nicely and looked good with the circular bottom installed, finish sanded, and varnished.
Even years later as a journeyman aircraft machinist I never had the nerve to try it again. So well done Steven

It is important to be able to clean on board. Narrow places, cracks and cavities are places where dirt accumulates. You will regret the wedge between the sink cover and the wall.

I just can't get over the epic juxtaposition of being mostly inside a large shed for years building every inch of this boat and then suddenly launching it and being out on the open ocean exploring the world. I built a go-cart in my garage and I was proud... I can't even imagine what it will feel like the first time you guys set sail.

The hare and the tortise... slow and steady, with great attention to detail, not only wins the ultra marathon, it lasts a lifetime.
Steven, progress may seem slow, at times, but just remember that the attention to detail means the boat will be that much better and more comforting to live aboard, and look at on the day to day, once you are out to sea on the many voyages to come.
Quality takes time, but it is oh so worth it in the end.
A plywood boat done up in stitch and glue may go together much quicker, but it won't last as long or be as pleasing to the eye over the course of circumnavigating the globe.
You are building a home, young turtle, carry your home with you, proudly, far into the future. You are building a boat to be proud of for sure.
I wish I could say I'm planning to attend so that I may leave my indelible mark upon this masterpiece, but the way my fixed income barely gets us by, I don't foresee having the funds to travel. I hope the gathering is yet another resounding success, as were past get togethers. Who knows, maybe I'll scratch together a couple of bucks and hit some money from the Lotto. 🤞🙏🌳⛵

Sink surround looks amazing ! Looks like you can access it and sit down in case of nausea... you mentioned storage of necessities in head, but recommend a primary storage rack/pipe for toilet paper and hand or bath towels just OUTSIDE bathroom in reach so it stays dry or for towels, can dry more effectively. Also makes it more obvious when you're out of TP before you're uhhh, committed to final approach... Thanks for early heads up on May 7/8 event, may be able to attend I hope !

You should look into tying small foot pedals (I've seen waist high levers as well) for soap or sink control. It can be very handy especially when using both hands to wash something, or when washing hands. The best part about a tension system that usually does this is it's only got 2 moving components and can fold out of the way.

Thinking of small confined spaces and the head, and what you said about "evacuating from either end," will there be a vent or fan to evacuate the unavoidable smells? On a small craft buttoned up against high seas, it seems it could get rather ripe in the cabin without ventilation. Just thinking through real life.

The Nature's Head has a built-in fan which constantly draws air out through the compost area. That's the best part of those dry toilet designs, the fan eliminates the odors at the source! A standard bathroom fan requires the smelly air to pass through the entire room before being removed.

The crimped ends of each section of smoke pipe and the fittings should be on the outlet (up) side. If you need to cut a short piece of pipe to go in between two fittings, you can either cut the crimped end off a longer piece of pipe and use that, or use a manual crimping tool to crimp one end of a short piece of pipe. In other words, DO NOT turn one fitting backwards (with the crimped end down) and connect two crimped ends with an uncrimped piece of pipe.
