Let's build a bike from this exceptionally beautiful and technically bizarre set… Perhaps you will forgive me my hands shaking a little…!

Tak tedy pojďme postavit kolo z této výjimečně nádherné a technicky prapodivné sady. Snad mi odpustíte, že se se mi trochu třesou ruce…!

Back in the day, we’d twist the toe straps twice as we lace them through the back of the pedals to stop any travel of the buckles.
Thanks for the support, DA AX is truly an amazing kit. Sometimes I even put two straps in the pedal to hold it properly. Thank goodness for LOOK!
I was in the bicycle business here in the U.S. from 1972 until the early 1980s and remember how beautiful and well made the Miyata bikes were. Didn't see one very often, but each one was a treat. So is your restoration....looks good!

Subscribed! What a beautiful bike. I am biased as my first bike that I purchased with my own hard earned summer money was a 1983 Pro-Miyata with full Shimano AX group, even the handlebars. I still have it even though it does not get ridden too much, only on special occasions when I want to relive my youth. Along with it is a NOS 1982 Team-Miyata I purchased around 2000 when nobody wanted them. I built that up with a full DA EX group with AX stem and handlebars. I couldn’t leave well enough alone and in 2005 found myself rescuing a 1991 Team-Miyata from becoming somebody’s next fixie. I ended up building that one up with a nice DA 7700 series group. From then to now, I’ve managed to pick up another Team and European Full-Pro, and even a late ‘80 Team track frame. The one bike that I’ve never come across is the 1983 Team-Miyata-SL with Campagnolo group. That is one I’d love to have. Even back in the day, my Miyata bike shop never got one in but had a couple of the Aero-Miyatas, go figure. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks for watching! So you're a great connoisseur and collector of first-class K-M bikes! I like steel bikes and the DA 7300 is such an extraordinary set that I am very glad that I was able to finish this construction. It took me a couple of years to get all the parts and the frame.
@@OnRoadVintageBikes Over here in the US, Miyata did not have any affiliation with Koga but yes, I like Miyata frames. I've always loved the blue and gold color combination. And their paintwork back in the day was heads and shoulders above that coming out of Italy for the most part. My paint is original and for the most part, still looks great. Generally, I was careful to always wash down my bike after rides, removing any sweat. I had a Pinarello Montello in 1988 that even with that same care, ended up developing some rust, mainly towards the head tube and under the forks. The finish was not the best and was actually quite delicate. I have another Pinarello Montello (w/original matching finished and pantographed stem and seat post) in the original Cromovelato finish and I am hesitant to take it too much because the finish is quite thin, although it is sprayed over a fully chromed frame. I probably should have it clear coated but I already have too many project bikes on my hands, LOL.

Almost a year since I last commented, and wanted to give a quick update on my brakes. On my Pro Miyata, I had previously replaced the AX brake levers with a pair of Aero Gran Compe levers. Since the last time I commented, I have reinstalled the original Dure-Ace AX levers and at the same time, replaced the original brake pads that were getting very hard with Koolstop pads. The braking performance is now much better than before, even with the older AX levers. I did this at the same time that I reinstalled the original Dura-Ace handlebars with internal routing, so now it is 100% all Dura-Ace AX groupset. My Team Miyata is not 100% Dura-Ace EX as the EX levers were non-aero and I much prefer the 7400 series (and aero look) levers, even though I have a NOS EX set. However, what I am doing at the moment is having a set of late Dura-Ace levers from the early 2000s (I believe they are the last model of brake-only levers) slotted and pantographed to replicate the Dura-Ace EX levers, using my NOS set as a template. Other than that, the bike is a full Dura-Ace EX groupset, except for the handlebars. Those handlebars are AX as Shimano, as far as I can tell, did not make handlebars for the EX group, only AX.

I have a 1981 MIYATA PRO AERO which I bought new in 1982. .. very rare.. over the years much modified mostly with Suntour Superb Components.

Bummer. it got stolen. I still have my MIYATA Pro Aero from 1981.
Back in the early 80's, I had a friend who had a Team Miyata with Dura Ace AX, (6 speed) with those Dyno Drive pedals. .People I ride with, call my bikes "Vintage", as a joke. Two of them have Dura Ace 7700 (one of them with the dreaded 7700 bottom bracket, and another bike with Dura Ace 7800. One of the old ones, still has a Dura Ace 1" headset and the Dura Ace seatpost.

TRUE STORY:
I love Team Miyata race bikes from the late 70s early 90s because I became a professional Cat-1 racer on a blue & gold Koga Miata team replica with all Shimano DuraAce AX. I used to run ARAYA Tita-Ace Titanium rims with large 700 x 27c Clement del Mundo tubulars. I also used to speed balance my wheels just like a motorcycle or car and rode on large 27c tubulars which was my key secret to being one of the fastest Cat-1 descender's in So Calif USCF district.
Problem was my super expensive ARAYA Tita Ace rims kept developing hairline cracks around the spoke holes after a month of training and racing. So I kept taking them back to Araya's US office in Glendale California as they guaranteed them. One day a small group of Japanese from Araya & Shimano came to my bike shop and gave me a case of Araya Tita Ace rims and asked me if I could help them solve the hairline cracking problem.
About a week later my friend and road bike customer came to my shop, who at the time worked at the near by Burbank Lockheed secret Skunk works. He was in charge of the SR Black Bird's titanium skin maintenance. So I showed him my titanium hair line cracked rim and asked him why do they keep cracking at the spoke eyelets. In less then 3 seconds he figured it out... He told me Araya made a big mistake using Galvanized steel spoke eyelets on titanium as both cause a chemical reaction which causes the Titanium to crack.
About week later a van shows up with an other group of Japanese engineers including the president of Shimano USA all asking if I found anything on why their rims cracking? They were shocked by the news I gave them. They quickly went into a huddle outside my shop and were talking pretty loud in Japanese about the situation. After about 10 minutes they came back into my shop and offered me a Job on the spot to work for them. I said yes... A week later I shut down my shop and two weeks later I was in Japan at the Shimano main office. For three years I ended up going back and forth to Japan almost every other month. I was in seventh heaven and eventually I married the secretary of Shimano's US president, Mr Ken Fujimura. I also got to know Mr. Miyata pretty well, he was a lot of fun to be around with especially when he used to come to the US. He had the habit of wrecking rental cars. So yes, this all delightfully happened to me.
Your story is spectacular! And I am even more pleased with your praise, thank you very much and I will be happy to read your life stories and advice. In the former communist Czechoslovakia, we had very few opportunities to meet top cycling equipment in the 1980s. That's why now I'm building bikes that I couldn't have then and I'm trying them out. Something else I just remembered after watching your video for the 10th time, is those early AX brake levers on your build. I have these (in a light blue color) but I replaced them with a set of Aero Gran Comps on the Pro and a Dura Ace, 7400 series I believe on the Team. Those early AX levers were not very good and at the time, I was riding the bikes more than I do now and wanted to modernize the builds in the areas of braking and wheels. Still used the original AX and EX calipers though. For my wheels, I rebuilt with some silver Mavic CXP, 30s I believe, and then finally made them tubeless. I did save all the parts, so a future restoration could remove those improvements if someone wanted to take it back to period correct although the AGC levers are not too far off from period correct. I can tell you that I won't be changing anything.
The 7400 brake levers are the absolute top in their category and time, but in this video I tried to make the AX mystery set as original as possible.
Also the Shimano AX sponsored team I rode with had problems with the cranks cracking around the pedal hole. probably why Shimano reverted back to the standard size. And yes the brake levers were fragile
The 'Ko' in the Koga name is from Kowalick. She was the Czech wife of 'Ga' which stands for the family name Gaastra. So it's KowalickGaastra - Miyata. So the bike is Czech, Dutch and Japanese. Miss Kowalick did the administration of the company.
Great bikes, until the 1995 modelyear imho. But that's from a mtb point of view.

miyata was very famous and now in Japan they are producing some incredible rugs. with tange tubes.
In Korea, where I live, builders are making frames after completing the course, and keirin racing is still active. (It's a little different from track racing and get some high salary rather than olympic gold medals)
but…. I like french lugs~🙏 prugnat s4 long point + columbus SLX tubing I will make soon 👍

Wow! You did it again. Your videos just keep getting better and better. Campagnolo made their center pull brakes a few years later. But I think I prefer the Shimano. Everybody used center pull brakes in the 60's. That changed with Eddy Merckx.

Loved watched this being built up, takes me back to a time when we'd fitted dozens of AX groupsets to frames, though being in the UK, the Koga Miyata frame was one of the hardest to get hold of, most 'off the shelf' frames came with a gear cable stop either on the bottom or top of the chainstay tube, this caused headaches but several frame manufacturers started to make the frames with suitable placed gear cable guides.

Pretty surprised you didn't use the correct headset spanners ?
Shimano AX friction gear levers should be devoid of any such grease on all the moving friction parts, greased up washers/friction areas will only lead to the levers slipping backwards, only the threaded bolt should have a light coat of grease, my advice here is to take the levers off & fully clean the friction parts, re-assemble, levers will be far stiffer and won't slip.
I wouldn't have fitted the DA 7400 seat post, yes it's the same shape but the later text makes me cringe when fitted with AX & EX components.
Shame you couldn't find a DA AX handlebar stem - DA AX chainset - DA AX pedals - DA AX brake levers, though finding decent DA AX components isn't easy to come by and the prices can be crazy.
You've put the brake levers on the wrong sides of the bars ? Shimano designed levers that the cables run on the outside of the bars being encased in the foam covers, giving it a slight aircraft wing profile, I suppose no harm is done fitting them the way you have though.
The clear plastic AX headset cover ? All that grease you spreaded over the top and inside the head steerer! The grease will eventually go mucky and the cover will look a right mess when you look at it, what you should have done is slid the plastic cover right up to the top of the stem, using a elastic band to hold it up out the way, then grease the inside of the steerer tube, insert the stem, set to correct height, clean away all excess grease, then push the AX cover over the headset...Voila! A clean headset :-)
If you need to get the AX cover off in the near future... use a hairdryer and warm up the plastic cover, rotating it as you warm it, making it go like rubber, then it just pops off, I've seen newbies wreck AX covers by putting a screwdriver under the bottom, then trying to lift it, usually results in a ripped cover & marked headset :-(
If the brake blocks are still genuine Shimano, then they'd have gone hard, giving you less braking force, there is a company now making replacement blocks for the AX brakes, these are much better than Shimano, they are called 'Kool Stop'.

A few days ago I found some AX brakes in my roof space. I have a 1970’s Romet ex Polish Team bike that I want to restore. Plus a 1980’s Peugeot Anet with a weird seat pin clamp.

I had exactly the same bike in 1983, frame has a very bad geometry, when sprinting the rear wheel breaks out, looks where great for the era but not only good memories.

@@OnRoadVintageBikes I have a question for you. Excuse the length. Why do vintage cranksets gearing spec the double ring chainsets 42T-52T or 42T-53T. Modern chainsets are typically 34-50, 36-52, & 39-53. I just acquired a NOS Vintage Campagnolo Gran Sport crankset from 1985. The chainrings are 42-53 with a 116 BCD. There are 36T 116 BCD smaller chaingrings available for these cranks. In your opinion how well do you think a 36T-52T on this chainset would work since it doesn't have the modern pins and ramps? Was there a reason for the smaller gaps in teeth numbers on the older chainsets?
@@charlesmansplaining I don't think the RD were able to stretch the chain at the time, and also on bcd 144 smaller than 42z can't be put on, and 54 because the smallest cog were 13 at the time and later 12

Koukám, že používáte v hlavovém složení jen věnečky. Já dávám pouze kuličky. Asi jsou ty věnečky praktičtější pak při rozborce. 💁♂️
Pokud jsou originál tak používám, do středu jen Campagnolo věnečky ostatní jsou špatně.
Dneska jsem narazil na YT na nějakýho japonskýho týpka, kterej rozmontoval kompletně představec ax a je to složitý jak atomová elektrárna....
Tomu bych věřil, celá sada je tak trochu "jiná".

I have a couple questions about your restoration. Maybe you explain this in your native language but the chromed sections of your frame were there from the manufacturer, correct? My Miyata frames are in pretty good condition but I do have a couple chips of the paint in a couple of them that allow the chrome beneath to show through, mainly on the seat stays and front of the fork. My question about this is, was the chrome of a quality high enough to leave bare, or did you have to re-chrome those areas? My second question is where did you find that blue cable housing?

Hi there, i don't manage to unscrew the crankset arm, the bolt gets loose for half turn and then locks again, do you know what the problem might be? Super nice restoration . CONGRaTS
Thanks for watching. Something is stuck, use the WD40 or something like that and put the bike on one side for a few hours and then take it from the inside of the crank and again for a few hours. Then try to loosen it up.

I thought so too, but the holes for the end of the cable cannot be turned. Is it right. This whole group is set on its head against all customs.
