Religion is Flawed! A Christian reacts to Alan Watts

  • In this video I react to ( / @truemeaning ) True Meaning’s video: "It's Time To Wake Up - Alan Watts on Religion". Throughout history we’ve seen the fruits of harsh, distorted and authoritarian religious institutions. However, despite the flawed human vehicles that recorded and translated the words of the Bible and other religious texts, can we trust it to spiritually transform us positively?
Here is the original video: • It's Time To Wake Up -...
Let me know in the comments what you think!
If you would like to hear more from me about Jesus, the Bible, and religion check out my other channel / @offthelefteye . Here is a recent video where I talk about how the war between Israel and Palestine is NOT foretold in the Bible, despite what many Christians are told.

Yes it is you need to learn to coexist with other people's faith even if you don't agree with them everybody has the right to believe what they want to believe but what he's saying is true and he's a very smart man so atheism is the best way to go just like faith is the best way to go for you some people that are not raised in a cult like you are free thinkers of course the church will tell you not to question in blindly follow your faith what's better for expecting everybody else's faith don't pray for me there is no God that is the true God or who knows maybe there is but I know it's certainly not the Christian God

@Thomas-f3s I don't agree with that. For most people it gives them comfort. I'm fine with religions as long as it brings peace to people. I do believe in a life after this one. But I don't think it has anything to do with a man wat thing you 24 7 and judges you in your wrong doings 😂 if that's the case then God has a massive Ego. Energy can be created out of nothing, but it can never be destroyed. I believe we are Energetic type beings that roam around the universe choosing to live certain life experiences, maybe in other dimensions too idk. I just have smoll human brain lol

I love that Alan says divine messages are limited by the language of the person receiving them... so it makes even more sense why Swedenborg with his experience and background would be a clear receiver with over qualified communication skills 😅

These folks OTLE have a tough mission to complete and God willing they will. This one is one of your best works here. Thank you and May God Bless you all in His endeavors.

alan watts was an Anglican priest who brought an understanding of eastern thought/pholosophy/religion/spirituality to the western mind...he was a very educated man and he succeeded in bringing that understanding...his teachings are spot on...he was a wonderful lecturer who knows how to clarify complex ideas...listen to and read as much as you can from alan watts.

But there's books that weren't included in the cannon because of bias by the Catholic church. The book of Thomas and other Gnostic texts. There was the big Nag Hammurabi find in Egypt. I think 'A Course In Miracles' is an example of an inspired text in modern times.

Man! You guys are reading my playlist. First Falling in Reverse and now Alan Watts. Awesome sauce.
Watts has been super helpful in my faith journey, especially when trying to think through Christianity's relationship with other religions. I've come to believe that the Bible is good because it's true. Some people believe truth is good because it's in the Bible (catch the difference?). I really feel that God's truth is bigger than any one book can capture. It's infinite, so we can drink deeply from any well where we find it.

Curtis, I love your orientation and Alan's, as a Baha'i. We, of course, believe in the divine origin of all religious scriptures. However, we don't believe any of them are the final Word of God, but rather steps in the process of "progressive revelation" that will still happen in the future.

It has to be read individually...
It speaks to everyone where they are in life.
Its understanding changes as we grow spiritually. In my belief.
The bible isn't the word, is it?
It says in the bible that the "Word" was with God in the beginning.
For me the bible is actually spiritually alive.
We can all find our life within its pages.
The Church teaches it for the whole.
    Like reading a horoscope.
This is why it has to be read with an open heart, personally.
    It's an amazing book.
    In my own opinion.

This reminds me of the interest in the shroud of Jesus and the argument as to whether it's truly the image of Jesus.. So much interest in these kind of subjects and arguments about things like the history of the Bible, more than what Jesus taught. Just my opinion.

    These are my few questions;
    - Do you know that the Ebionites who were the Original Jew Christians members of Jerusalem church did not believe the deity of Jesus? Thus those who believe that Jesus is God which follow catholic beliefs could be false. If that belief is false then it could be nonsense.
    - Do you know that the teachings about hell that it is eternal fire could not found anywhere else in the Bible? If you believe otherwise then again your belief could be false. If false again you might spending your whole trust on the nonsense.
    - Do you know that the writers of the gospel were not eye witnesses? Mark's gospel was written 40 years gap than the time of Jesus, and according to the scholars the life expectancy at that time was short since there was no medicine yet, therefore people during Jesus' time could be dead, thus Mark's book must have been based on circulating hearsay alone. Hearsay in any case is not reliable wherein the judiciary court would not in any case accept any witness who is not an eye witness. If the reliability of the new testament is feeble, how could you be comfortable with putting your whole trust on a weak thing?

I don' think there is a single written religious text in existence today free from some subversion or corruption. Such is what it is to be a human being and a recitable and prism for both heaven and hell. How does one cut through, then? This is where I've really found Swedenborg of the greatest help and whilst I don't always agree with what he says, he sets out well a golden thread that runs through all of the Abrahamic faiths, and others like Buddhism too. For me that thread becomes a marker that helps me not to get too lost in some difficult and esoteric religious text; his words can be like some scythe that cuts through and clears the way.

That is peculiar, his son Mark, has a channel on Utube, playing the recordings of his father's talks and seminars.
His daughter has a delightful Utube recording of taking LSD together with her father.
He died in the place he wanted to die, and his ashes were scattered by his family according to his wishes.
Whilst he was an alcoholic at the end, he was not a drunk.
I suspect he used alcohol as a catalyst to gain the insights he enjoyed rather than numb himself to the world.

The Catholic Church did not write the Bible, Peter was not a Catholic. He was a Christian, so were the rest of the disciples. Christ fulfilled, the law, i.e. the canon. Furthermore, all scripture is written by inspiration from God and is profitable for doctrine. Alan Watts came from a Lenz of Protestantism that preaches works, which is heresy. Alan had preached from the Lenz of the true gospel, which is Ephesians 28 and nine and John 316 he would’ve actually died with some peace in his life instead of a homeless bum living on a boat as a drunk. Horrible father too. Sad dude really. The Gospel has always been that we are saved by grace through faith and never of our own works. he somehow transfigure this message by saying going against or trying to do anything in life is like trying to accomplish our salvation and then he spiritualize the message. Very misleading stuff.

Keep listening to Allan Watts and you'll soon wake up and when you've done this the end of your video will change from the source you're referring to completely turning to it being Allan's words you've always been looking for. Another thing is that if you have been influenced by religion since before you turned 18, you may need to let Allan's words land gently and gently on you so that you don't feel like you were deceived all your upbringing by religious adults. A good clip on the knowledge surrounding it is the clip with Stellan Skarsgård being interviewed by skavlan where he asks Skarsgård questions about God. Don't know if there is any translation of this into English as they speak Scandinavian languages. I myself am Swedish like Skarsgård. All the best to you for your video and your reaction to Allan. Now keep going Allan and you will wake up soon and so should all your followers, family, friends and this entire planet do. After that, conflicts in the world will be a blue memory and everyone will feel very good, even from a young school age where you are allowed to stick to what you really love to do and not be guided by grades in school that will judge what you can become in an adult professional life.

That sounds contradictory to what Alan Watts said in a much longer lecture I just listened to, where he expressed great sadness at people expatiating a divinely or spiritually inspired message becoming turned into a sort of deus ex machina, your celebration of Alan's thoughts as something of higher truth than multitudes of others, and your suggestion that this person will wake up if they just listen to loads more of Alan's Words to become Un-asleep, is exactly the sort of thing that will perpertuate the very things Alan was saying are is an ongoing problem with doctrinal belief systems, on this plane of existence.
We have to think for ourselves, or maybe evem better feel the other persons perspective for ourselves, just as now, I empathize with you, and feel as you read this you may feel irritated or lectured to, which is definitely not the case..your opinion is equally as important as mine, these thoughts are only to be shared for musing on.
That's my take, it isn't gospel, just my thoughts to be considered.
      Best wishes☮️
