saw him give a lecture in 1972 or early 1973 in Cambridge, Mass...it was great...then had the opportunity to take part in a private seminar with him with about a dozen other people over the weekend...very interesting, though I can't recall exactly what he said at this point (should have taken notes)...my main takeaway, however, was that I should study Zen, which I did for a number of years (and still do from time to time (as well as dipping into some of Alan's books or videos)...

stuff like this makes me so interested in seeing the evolution of what is considered the bible today. it was eye opening for me as a 20 year old in college when i took a class on the bible in my college and had a baptist minister essentially say the bible is mostly lies and spent the next semester explaining how and why. i wish more christians were capable of this introspection and criticism and doubt and were able to look at those around them and see them for who they really are. Not the enemy, not an abomination, not sinful. Just another person who likely wants the same thing they do. To be loved and to have a connection and to have a life that means something.

Took several classes in college about religions, the Bible, Islam, Judaism. Nothing makes you more of an atheist than when you actually look at the history, the what and the why and facts behind the religions. Common sense tells me that if some divine being was the one writing these books they’d be perfect, undeniable and not contradictory. Yet all we find in these religious texts is very much humanity at its worst- racism, sexism, anti-women, anti-gay. If there was an all loving divine being he or she certainly wouldn’t try to alienate a group with hate but bring humanity together.

@coolguy1127 Someone on reddit posted this question about why God allows abuse like sexual abuse, physical abuse and such and one of the responses was because we have to suffer and be molded by our pain to be who God wants us to be. It is just absolutely batshit crazy. God is perfect because we must suffer to worship him and somehow HIS mistakes are our problem and we must bend to his will and abuse. It is insanity.
I don't know how I hung on to Christianity as long as I did but now I am anything and everything else I can. All I know is if the Christian God is real and I go to hell for not putting up with his shit then so be it.

Yeah, I believed those lies at one stage, until Jesus set me free from it all...I have hope, joy, love, meaning, that never goes away - that hole in my heart is permanently filled with His love. John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
      John 1:1-14
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God- 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

The New Testament is an historically reliable document in which eye witnesses to the events it reports documented them within living memory of other eye witnesses. A segment from 'Saved by the Light of the Buddha Within'...
My new understandings of what many call 'God -The Holy Spirit' - resulting from some of the extraordinary ongoing after-effects relating to my NDE...
Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what some scientists are now referring to as the unified field of consciousnesses. In other words, it’s the essence of all existence and non-existence - the ultimate creative force behind planets, stars, nebulae, people, animals, trees, fish, birds, and all phenomena, manifest or latent. All matter and intelligence are simply waves or ripples manifesting to and from this core source. Consciousness (enlightenment) is itself the actual creator of everything that exists now, ever existed in the past, or will exist in the future - right down to the minutest particles of dust - each being an individual ripple or wave.
The big difference between chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo and most other conventional prayers is that instead of depending on a ‘middleman’ to connect us to our state of inner enlightenment, we’re able to do it ourselves. That’s because chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo allows us to tap directly into our enlightened state by way of this self-produced sound vibration. ‘Who or What Is God?’ If we compare the concept of God being a separate entity that is forever watching down on us, to the teachings of Nichiren, it makes more sense to me that the true omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence of what most people perceive to be God, is the fantastic state of enlightenment that exists within each of us. Some say that God is an entity that’s beyond physical matter - I think that the vast amount of information continuously being conveyed via electromagnetic waves in today’s world gives us proof of how an invisible state of God could indeed exist.
For example, it’s now widely known that specific data relayed by way of electromagnetic waves has the potential to help bring about extraordinary and powerful effects - including an instant global awareness of something or a mass emotional reaction. It’s also common knowledge that these invisible waves can easily be used to detonate a bomb or to enable NASA to control the movements of a robot as far away as the Moon or Mars - none of which is possible without a receiver to decode the information that’s being transmitted. Without the receiver, the data would remain impotent. In a very similar way, we need to have our own ‘receiver’ switched on so that we can activate a clear and precise understanding of our own life, all other life and what everything else in existence is.
Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day helps us to achieve this because it allows us to reach the core of our enlightenment and keep it switched on. That’s because Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what scientists now refer to as the unified field of consciousnesses. To break it down - Myoho represents the Law of manifestation and latency (Nature) and consists of two alternating states. For example, the state of Myo is where everything in life that’s not obvious to us exists - including our stored memories when we’re not thinking about them - our hidden potential and inner emotions whenever they’re dormant - our desires, our fears, our wisdom, happiness, karma - and more importantly, our enlightenment.
The other state, ho, is where everything in Life exists whenever it becomes evident to us, such as when a thought pops up from within our memory - whenever we experience or express our emotions - or whenever a good or bad cause manifests as an effect from our karma. When anything becomes apparent, it merely means that it’s come out of the state of Myo (dormancy/latency) and into a state of ho (manifestation). It’s the difference between consciousness and unconsciousness, being awake or asleep, or knowing and not knowing.
The second law - Renge - Ren meaning cause and ge meaning effect, governs and controls the functions of Myoho - these two laws of Myoho and Renge, not only function together simultaneously but also underlies all spiritual and physical existence.
The final and third part of the tri-combination - Kyo, is the Law that allows Myoho to integrate with Renge - or vice versa. It’s the great, invisible thread of energy that fuses and connects all Life and matter - as well as the past, present and future. It’s also sometimes termed the Universal Law of Communication - perhaps it could even be compared with the string theory that many scientists now suspect exists.
Just as the cells in our body, our thoughts, feelings and everything else is continually fluctuating within us - all that exists in the world around us and beyond is also in a constant state of flux - constantly controlled by these three fundamental laws. In fact, more things are going back and forth between the two states of Myo and ho in a single moment than it would ever be possible to calculate or describe. And it doesn’t matter how big or small, famous or trivial anything or anyone may appear to be, everything that’s ever existed in the past, exists now or will exist in the future, exists only because of the workings of the Laws ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ - the basis of the four fundamental forces, and if they didn’t function, neither we nor anything else could go on existing. That’s because all forms of existence, including the seasons, day, night, birth, death and so on, are moving forward in an ongoing flow of continuation - rhythmically reverting back and forth between the two fundamental states of Myo and ho in absolute accordance with Renge - and by way of Kyo. Even stars are dying and being reborn under the workings of what the combination ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ represents. Nam, or Namu - which mean the same thing, are vibrational passwords or keys that allow us to reach deep into our life and fuse with or become one with ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’.
On a more personal level, nothing ever happens by chance or coincidence, it’s the causes that we’ve made in our past, or are presently making, that determine how these laws function uniquely in each of our lives - as well as the environment from moment to moment. By facing east, in harmony with the direction that the Earth is spinning, and chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo for a minimum of, let’s say, ten minutes daily to start with, any of us can experience actual proof of its positive effects in our lives - even if it only makes us feel good on the inside, there will be a definite positive effect. That’s because we’re able to pierce through the thickest layers of our karma and activate our inherent Buddha Nature (our enlightened state). By so doing, we’re then able to bring forth the wisdom and good fortune that we need to challenge, overcome and change our adverse circumstances - turn them into positive ones - or manifest and gain even greater fulfilment in our daily lives from our accumulated good karma. This also allows us to bring forth the wisdom that can free us from the ignorance and stupidity that’s preventing us from accepting and being proud of the person that we indeed are - regardless of our race, colour, gender or sexuality. We’re also able to see and understand our circumstances and the environment far more clearly, as well as attract and connect with any needed external beneficial forces and situations. As I’ve already mentioned, everything is subject to the law of Cause and Effect - the ‘actual-proof-strength’ resulting from chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo always depends on our determination, sincerity and dedication.
For example, the levels of difference could be compared to making a sound on a piano, creating a melody, producing a great song, and so on. Something else that’s very important to always respect and acknowledge is that the Law (or if you prefer God) is in everyone and everything.
NB: There are frightening and disturbing sounds, and there are tranquil and relaxing sounds. It’s the emotional result of any noise or sound that can trigger off a mood or even instantly change one. When chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day, we are producing a sound vibration that’s the password to our true inner-self - this soon becomes apparent when you start reassessing your views on various things - such as your fears and desires etc. The best way to get the desired result when chanting is not to view things conventionally - rather than reaching out to an external source, we need to reach into our own lives and bring our needs and desires to fruition from within - including the good fortune and strength to achieve any help that we may need. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo also reaches out externally and draws us towards, or draws towards us, what we need to make us happy from our environment. For example, it helps us to be in the right place at the right time - to make better choices and decisions and so forth. We need to think of it as a seed within us that we’re watering and bringing sunshine to for it to grow, blossom and bring forth fruit or flowers. It’s also important to understand that everything we need in life, including the answer to every question and the potential to achieve every dream, already exists within us.

Other videos I have seen of Watts are spot on. This however has some essential flaws. People know that something is fundamentally wrong with the church and Watts steps in, respected, smart sounding, as if he has studied Tao and Buhdda, and various sutras (as if we peasants have not). He offers a condescending view as if what you believe is stupid, but it's your choice to believe it. He stumbled on a truth, but only a partial truth which he masquerades as, in fact, the truth. If I hadn't met Yeshua I may have fallen for it. I agree with you captain.@@captainmeow2771

Fellow humans, we stand at a crucial crossroad in our shared history, and the path we choose next will define not only our lives but the lives of every generation to come. We have achieved astonishing things-building civilizations, unlocking mysteries of science, exploring the depths of space. But despite all our progress, we have not yet mastered what may be our greatest challenge: peace.
Peace is more than an ideal or a distant hope; it is the last, best chance we have to create a future worth living in. The threats we face are unprecedented, with conflicts that span borders, environmental crises that disregard politics, and technologies capable of both building and devastating worlds. In a time where the stakes have never been higher, our only lasting hope is to embrace peace as a practical necessity for our survival.
Look around. Almost half the world lives amid the echoes of war, conflict, and unrest. We see it in the faces of displaced families, in cities turned to ruins, in communities torn apart by anger and loss. This is a truth we can’t ignore, and it’s one that affects every single one of us, whether we experience it firsthand or feel its impact in our society, our economies, and our shared humanity. The world has become a place where peace feels fragile, a privilege for some, rather than a universal right. But peace cannot be a distant goal-it must become our collective priority.
The time is now. We cannot wait for peace to simply arrive or hope it will be granted by the hands of a few. Peace must be built by us all, from every corner of the world, across every divide. It is in our hands-ordinary people, leaders, communities-to insist that there is another way. Each of us has a role in rejecting division, hatred, and complacency, choosing instead to uphold human dignity, compassion, and understanding.
This is our chance to change. We must choose peace-not as a passive absence of war but as an active commitment to justice, cooperation, and compassion. It’s time we recognize that real strength lies not in dominance but in unity, not in conquest but in understanding. Peace is a powerful force, one that has the capacity to break cycles of violence and create spaces for healing and growth. It’s within our power, and our responsibility, to make this choice.
It won’t be easy, and it won’t be fast. But if we don’t seize this opportunity now, when will we? For every child who grows up knowing only violence, for every person who lives in fear and displacement, for every culture losing its history to destruction, we carry a shared responsibility to end this cycle. For every life lost, every dream shattered, and every hope deferred, we owe it to ourselves-and to each other-to make peace our legacy.
This may be our last chance. Let us set aside the divisions and hostilities that have held us back. Let us work, with everything we have, toward a peaceful world that our children and their children can thrive in. The moment demands our courage, our humility, and our wisdom. Together, we can make peace our greatest achievement and our most enduring legacy.
This is our last chance-let us seize it, and let us make peace our path forward. Derek Sadie

It comes through understanding Jesus from a spiritual lens. Otherwise, if we’re all god, then any of us could technically claim authority as the Antichrist. It was because of Jesus’ sacrifice, and his divine timing that we can claim him as the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit.

Perhaps it is as they say: technology which is sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic. Maybe this applies to mind altering drugs too.

Any inkling of "I am God" will always become "I am great and powerful and beyond reproach" (ego) as long as you think that you're the chooser. But you're not the chooser. This is what none of us wants to admit. You don't choose what you prefer, nor what thoughts come into your head, nor how you feel about those thoughts, nor what you'll think of next. As Watts says, "You don't choose your thoughts. You don't choose your feelings." And in conversation with Elliot Mintz he says it plainly: "Neither fate, nor free will." There's no such thing as choice. Yes, we learn. But no, we never escape our conscience, even if it's opaque or wrong, sometimes. We never escape our own judgment. Because there's NO CHOICE. But not just no choice for humans. How would God choose anything? By going "Mmhmm, yes this feels BEST!" But did God choose that thing XYZ to feel best to Him? Or is it just 'best?' See it yet? It doesn't mean there's no meaning. It means there's no choice. So be honest with yourself and your ego. Ego exists but also it doesn't. It's part of the show. Because the secret is that ego = belief in choice. We think we choose and thus we must overly justify our choices, even the wrong ones, to protect that little vulnerable thing we think is 'I' choosing. See that there's no choice. At all. Even in where your eyes move. See that there's no choice, and thus it's not up to you at all if you wake up. See that there's no choice AND YET THERE'S STILL MEANING. This is the opposite of nihilism. This is faith.

"Paradise is this beautiful rock we all live on for a very short time." This is a story too. So is this (my) comment. Consciousness IS story. Consciousness is a singular point of view (as compared to 'out there') in which we experience the world, we are aware of our desires (judgments about the rightness or wrongness of things, even just the desire to stay alive another day), and we act. Then we see things happen and we feel the implications of those things and then we adapt and act more. That's consciousness. That's story. A main character and a plot. Even if it's just "I'm me and I'm hungry." Hence why Hindus see life as a 'drama,' and God playing all the parts. But that drama includes the stories we tell as part of the meta story. The ideas we have are part of this story that's happening. It includes all the ideas and stories we have ever told, factual or fictional, and all the ideas and actions those stories have generated. I'm not justifying any given thing, nor saying that all stories are the same or of equal accurateness. I'm just saying that there's nothing we can think about that isn't story, because thinking (consciousness) is story.
