I found an Alan Watts book lying on a park bench a few days after high school graduation. In it, I found a note that said, “ Dear Finder, I have read this book, and I hope that if you choose to read it, your outlook on life may profoundly change. After reading, Please pass this book, and note, to someone whom you think may absorb its wisdom. From a fellow human friend”. I did read that book, and it really improved my outlook and made me appreciate the “now”! That was 45 years ago, and I’m still learning from Mr. Watts. I gave the book to a young lady that I met at that same park. We exchanged phone numbers, and have maintained a platonic friendship ever since.

I work at an indoor amusement park, and unlike many coworkers who complain and eagerly await the end of their shifts, I find joy in what I do. While others question why I'm consistently happy and encouraging, I explain that I take pleasure in motivating people to overcome their fear of heights, cheering them on during climbs, and urging them to conquer the zip line. Witnessing their triumphs brings me immense satisfaction, and the positive atmosphere translates to great customer satisfaction. It's a cycle of happiness and fulfillment that I cherish.

Depends how you look at it. If you have learned from you life experienced and become a compassionate and loving person helping people along the way when you leave you will have a higher vibration which will be reflected in where your next life will start. Your vibration on exit effects your onward journey, therefore you take knowledge with you in the form of a vibrational frequency.

Anyway, it doesn't make sense. The other way to go something back is that your body elements will be decomposed and recycled in the biosphere.
Individual life is primarily ephemeral, and the universe doesn't care whether you exist in the grand scheme. Similarly, few people care about my existence, and I don't care about many, but I care about people in my vicinity and myself (things I can affect), and I try to make the best of what I have and have developed.
Species come and go on this planet; even if we all disappeared tomorrow, nothing would change in our universe. We are self-aware and try to put meaning to our existence - our brains work that way. But there is no higher meaning, purpose, or greater goal beyond our need to replicate and survive - we can only build systems that make it easier to do so, but we are animals and don't like sharing (unless it is on social media, but here someone else makes a living out of it).
We exist because we do, and we can do things with life as much as our evolved capacity, social and economic circumstances, and current knowledge allow us to make out of it. Well, at least that's how I approach it, and it may be dry, but hey, it keeps my expectations more realistic.

Haha! During my working years, I was an over-the-road trucker. I often marvelled at how it was actually legal to do something so fun and even get paid for it! I loved what I did, and I met so many amazing people and had so many adventures! Our company was small, only 9 trucks, and the owner routinely gave the drivers all the same route, so we would drive together and talk and laugh over the radio the whole time. As a woman, this was particularly helpful to me, as I never felt alone at the wrong time, or unsafe. Well, I have to say though, i rarely met people who made me uncomfortable, and most of the time, everyone from the dock workers, to the truck stop employees were all friendly and pleasant to visit with. My co-workers were all really interesting people, and oh man did we see the scenery and sunsets/sunrises! What a beautiful life!

I pannicked, back then, it took quite some time to answer all the many questions, concerns, objections and complicated technology issues...
I took a breath and evaluated the situation, I managed to get all of the customers into a situation where they all helped each other .. the experienced customers helped the new customers... and there was this communal party of chatting and support.

I told my mental therapist that doing household chores makes me happy and doing personal hygiene daily is sufficient for me and gives me peace, joy, happiness mainly because everything I do is to do it keeping it seriously simple. Others may find I go above and behind, but it really is the involvement of movement that is just like music in my ears. I grew up singing and playing instruments. I am 66 years, 8 months and 17 days as of my comments and still have instruments and have original, copyrighted songs made from my entire past life exoeriences and exposures of various sorts. I will be dancing till the end of time. Singing also. I get to tune out and tune in to beats if my heart, soul and mind. And it is not learned externally or in any school. I programmed my self to venture on earth. I use to think something was wrong with me not doing what others did. When I realized others did not do what I loved and did, that’s when I loved me for who and what I am and do. Thanks for reading my comments. Smiles

Maybe-then again, maybe not. It may be that we are more than our flesh and bone, that who we really are is the being that animates the body. And that we have incarnated and lived many mortal lives before and many more to follow, each one a chapter of our unlimited existence. Each one a new opportunity to evolve, learn and grow. And in our consciousness we carry that past, present, and future all at the same time.

It opened my mind up when Alan said that the champion runner identified his self-worth with his suffering - how strange indeed it is to believe that only by suffering could one achieve good things! The “must succeed” “must do” makes life deeply miserable, leaving us feeling powerless and tormented. We forget the beauty inherent in the process.
I really like Alan - he is sincere and kind, and conveys words of wisdom in a poetic, simple, beautiful way.

I don't think it will ever happen. We have enough automation that it is indeed within grasp (and feel free to laugh light-heartedly at people who have earnestly bought into the delusion that humanity is still in a possession that we need to work all the time -- they have been fed propoganda from the people who want them working for them, they are not awake) not to work anymore, but the catch is that all this automation has owners, and the owners of this automation will use it to serve their own selfish ends, not humanities.
Sad way to look at our current state of life, but, realistic. And if you want it to change, the first thing you need to do is to understand this.

My takeaway here is to indulge in fantasy in order to insulate (or even delude) oneself from the harshness of reality. This type of thinking can lead to problems like Stockholm Syndrome. Sometimes, the simplest answers hold the truth, namely that pleasure is pleasure, pain is pain, work is work, and leisure is leisure.

I discovered Alan Watts during the Napster years of the internet when people shared entire DRIVES instead of individual files.
On one particularly fortunate dive into "Napster Land" I came across a drive with HUNDREDS of hours of Alan Watts lectures spanning his entire life!
When 20-something year old me heard his "life is a dream" lecture for the first time, it catapulted me into a new version of myself who continues to evolve to this day!
I'll never know who's computer I downloaded that from, but if I did, I would thank them from the bottom of my heart!

For the vast majority of my life I've taught English as a second language, mostly in Japan. For the most part (there have been some terrible schools) it has been a very enjoyable experience. I never get that Sunday afternoon, Monday morning feeling and it's never the same day twice. For me it is a type of game. The pay generally isn't very good so I'm not rich. But when I do lie on my death bed looking back on my life I'll know that I didn't spend most of my life in a office doing a job I hate.

I remember semi-jokingly, I used to say the purpose of life is to chill...but in my younger mind, I thought it meant we have a job so that we can make money to afford a home so after all the stuff we need to do to sustain ourselves, then we can be in that state where we can chill. Maybe watch a movie with a snack? Listen to music? Read a book? Something like that. But I realized before even listening to this, that we should be chill in everything. Our purpose is whatever we're doing in any given moment. If there's too much to do that you stress out, your whole life is a means to an end. If you have kids, I can only imagine how stressful that can be, and if I ever took on that life, I would wanna make the absolute best of it.

I have always made work a game, no matter the job. I worked 6-12 hours a day as a kid and I needed a way to get through it. I try to do something really well to get to a tipping point where someone says- hey did you see what he did? And then I move to the next metric until someone notices the outlier. Variety is the spice of life they say. I look at data points or something I haven’t seen anyone I know accomplish. No one has a clue why I do what I do and why I am and have been happy most of the time doing jobs or tasks most people dislike. I am full of energy and it has brought me a lot more success and appreciation for life. I hope all seeing this video can apply it to their lives in any form at all. ❤🎉

We are all just visitors here...of our own device. As surely as we enter, we will exit. We may make an impact on others lives or we may not, but time will erase it in its entirety. No matter how we measure ourselves or others, it is immaterial for we are as smoke on the wind. Four score years...one score to grow, one score to live, one score to reflect on how two score were misspent, and one score filled with the aches and pains and ruminations of the end. You can't know how fruitless it all is until you're near the end of your story and you've read it to yourself. This is humanity's story...it is the same as the fruit flies just on a different scale.

There are 3 things I gleaned from this video. One: that efficiency is what kills play. Can't dance to your work if you are endeavoring to minimize the time or effort spent on it. Two: that a lot of the drama from my favorite isekai anime is from taking the play away from the characters' games. They lose the ability to change the setting (going from real life to the game mindset and back again) and take things much more seriously. Three: the play can be in either the journey or the destination. Play in the journey like the dancing soccer players or dishwashers or shoe shiners. Play in the destination in the runner reducing their time and the joy they got in repeating that until their time improved. The problem arises when some people see the lower time and start assuming others should be able to do that and anything more than that is "wasting" time.
