  • Some have imagined that heaven is a state of endless worship rituals. But Swedenborg learned that heavenly “worship” is actually much more interesting, active and practical.

    This is great. I often think if I'm doing enough here in this dimension, I am not a church goer but focus more on the love of others ... and myself. It truly is good news.
    Thought I'd drop a poem since I'm here.
    Let God In
    In the darkest of our hours
    In the ever changing light
    Let God’s Love embrace you
    Let His guidance be your sight
    Among all the struggling souls
    On this world and the next
    Let God’s Grace restore you
    From all things hexed
    There is within our being
    A light that shines forlorn
    Waiting for the wisdom within us
    To be nurtured and reborn
    In every ounce of trouble
    There’s a clue to who we are
    Leading onto greatness
    That’s so near and yet so far
    I invite the ever present
    I invite the yet unclear
    I invite the many masters
    To stay close and to be near
    Let’s kick this evolution
    That we all can feel is naught
    Not conducive to the outcome
    For which we have been taught
    It’s just a fleeting moment
    It’s coming to that place
    Where we can all delight
    In all things that we face
    Face off bad emotions
    Kick them firmly out the door
    Don’t let them keep us bounded
    To things we want no more
    Let us prepare the welcome;
    Realise our sin;
    Put a smile upon our dial;
    And Let God In!

    Beautiful cathedral. Thank you for making this video. It took me most of my life to understand that our state-of-being is the most important thing -- not going through the motions, just showing up to church services -- because if what you are doing is not feeding the soul and inspiration the physical will mean nothing. What is important is caring deeply about making a difference in the lives of others and developing our soul in such a way that love flows into us from Heaven because we desire it and it flows out of us into others because we want others to share in what we know and what we are learning.

    I always thought the Heavenly Kingdom and the Spiritual Kingdom were one and the same! I definitely need to do more reading and studying of Swedenborg's work and slow down and really try to understand his writings and not skim his through his works.
    Thank you so much for your in-depth explanations, Curtis! 😊

    • @offTheLeftEye
      @offTheLeftEye  7 месяцев назад

      There's a lot to understand in Swedenborg, Leona -- be easy on yourself! Curtis has done a bunch of videos in this series on Life After Death that describe the two kingdoms. It's all heaven, but Swedenborg describes one kind of mind/heart-set that is more love centered (a "heavenly" or "celestial" disposition), and one that is more truth centered (a "spiritual" disposition). No need to fret about it, though -- we end up in the place that is the perfect fit for us!

    I loved the fact that you can come and go into a temple as you please in the spiritual world without angering God and even getting punished for it. God clearly knows to darn well that church is boring for some people but is very cool about it at the same time. Especially as his children are churches in general. I don't mind church at first but there are so many false teachings and people who do harm then good with their own Christian religions I want to stay away from that and love and worship God with the goodness and happiness I feel in my heart. However even though God may understand why a person doesn't come to church he still wishes for us to keep the sabbath day holy which can be hard now days.

    • @offTheLeftEye
      @offTheLeftEye  7 месяцев назад

      As this video pointed out, WisdomPanda, one way of defining "worship to God" is living a life of love to others and to God. That's a way to keep the Sabbath, for sure, whether you attend a weekly service or not.
      Great point about each of God's children being a "church" in themselves!

    A most interesting topic and very informative. Sometimes on Sunday mornings I wonder, is it only the New Church in the afterlife, since by that time we should have no questions about Swedenborg's teachings. Or will there be United Church of Christ, United Church of Canada, Church of England, Church in Wales, Church of Scotland, etc.

    • @offTheLeftEye
      @offTheLeftEye  7 месяцев назад +1

      Great question, Dennis! Swedenborg says we'll all be instructed in the truth of who God is -- but that info may be able to infill all kinds of different faith traditions. As Swedenborg says, when we enter the next life, we're not asked what we believe, but how we LIVED. Love is the main thing, as I understand it!

    Really helpful insights, as always. Thank you. I like to imagine the workings of the mind as a council of advisors collaborating to inform our practices and decisions. Each council member is keeping an ear out for good teachings and doing work to apply those principles in novel circumstances, looking for potential applications on different levels of experience, say.
    Perhaps this relates to how celestial angels remain present in our inner stillness, protecting and nurturing our deepest loves and intentions, while influences from the spiritual kingdom focus on finding the means and refining them. Working in tandem, continuously.

    Hello Curtis Childs, I have a request. I've lived on the streets for a decade, but now my life has turned around and I have a family and a full-time job. One of my colleagues has a character trait that surfaces in many homeless, namely: Being proud of the evil they do and feeling shame for the good.
    Because they see the good as weakness and the evil as strength.
    It's been a long time since I've read Swedenborg, but maybe you can make a short about it, because I show my colleague the clips you make sometimes and I want to tell him this character trait without "throwing the pearls before the swine" and have him attack me about it.
    I would like a short about how some people brag about the evil and how they hide the good.

    He actually wrote that the churches in the celestial or heavenly kingdom are simpler or "without magnificence.” However, he also wrote that the celestial people themselves aren’t less intelligent, they are actually thousands of times more intelligent and wise. About number 225, when I first read it I thought it was confusing because it appeared like Swedenborg was saying that there are no preachers in the celestial kingdom, but then a sentence or two later he wrote that there are. The way I understood it after reading the Latin and comparing it to places in his other books where he wrote about it was that in the celestial kingdom the "preachers" (because they're not really called that) are more like guides due to the fact that they don't teach from a position of princely or kingly authority, but rather from a tone of asserting common knowledge. The difference is between asserting a truth the whole community has already accepted and then gaining further enlightenment on it, vs preaching fundamental truths that the whole community isn't aligned closely on, or hasn't fully accepted into their heart. In ancient Greek, the philosophers like Plato, Socrates, etc (who I think are the “spiritual” people like those Swedenborg wrote about), would turn over ideas constantly in the public forum, never quite accepting them in full because their hearts were partially divided. So they had to talk and talk, or debate and debate, and never quite get to the heart of the issue and move past it. We’ve all been there whenever we’ve sat through a long, seemingly unnecessary meeting at church or at work - rather than getting to the heart of the issue, it just drags on. For this reason, the spiritual people are gathered under authority figures the Lord has put into place because they think along the lines of the group, or groupthink, more-so based on social influence, rather than based on a love for the truth itself, because to love a truth for its own sake is to love the good in it, its essential usefulness, i.e., to love the Lord.

      Thank you so much AcousticAce for these wonderful insights about the kingdoms of heaven. You are quite a scholar, reading in Latin as well. Yes my understanding is that there are priests in the spiritual world who go visit the heavenly or celestial kingdom, but that the highest angels have the Word inscribed on their hearts and do not need so much instruction. They are fully engaged with living it. Yes your observation of a group think makes sense to me as well, since the highest heaven is mostly focused on love to the Lord and the spiritual kingdom on love for the neighbor. Thank you so much!

    I have been to a different kind of place in the afterlife where the truth is written in the laws of physics and all the inhabitants, including all the plants and animals worship by the force of nature within them. Water for instance worships by flowing in accordance to gravity and subatomic particles worship according to quantum physics. This creates love and peace and joy and authenticity and belonging. The people are also nature angels and they obey their divine life code, in which is recorded the instructions for their behavior. All government is by internal instinct and leaders and rulers are the ones who organize social events. All the work of creating order is done by the grid of predetermination and nothing ever happens that is not the will of God because the will.of God is the life code and the life code cannot be disobeyed
    There is no free will there at all. The worship services are social events where people dress up in clothes they have made by hand and marvel at each other's creativity and talent. The rituals all involve food and the purpose of it is to glorify God and God's unfathomable generosity and wisdom for creating this perfect predetermined system where all of infinite reality and eternal life is pre-made in utter appropriateness down to the tiniest quark. That God knows so much that he can make this reality for them is considered a matter for endless celebration, and appreciating the perfection and wisdom in each other is the love of God that is shared. Every day there is somebody's birthday, or somebody's wedding and the kings and queens who plan and host events are busy 24 7. Time is different there so in spite of how busy everyone is, there is always time to go make something beautiful with your hands. These angels who are willing to let God make all the choices for them are very special indeed. I think Swedenborg didn't get to see this realm because if you are not one of those perfectly obedient no free will angel.you can't even visit. No one with free will is allowed in, not ever. I got to go because I'm from there.Even my human life is pre-planned in minute detail. I don't actually have free will. You do, maybe, but I don't. Cool, eh?

      @@offTheLeftEye yeah, so to give you some context to consider while you are pondering the free will issue, I am here on earth to try out free will in an atmosphere of perfect forgiveness so if I make a mistake I can still get home.My whole life is planned in minute detail right down to what my atoms are doing and how my electrons are dancing around in my brain, but all of this serves just one purpose to get me to the point of choice. I don’t get to choose anything that happens, I get to choose whether or not to accept what happens as the love of God towards me. I get to choose to be grateful or not. I was sent here to meet my true love and soul mate, and I have in fact met them, plural. I have a spouse and a brother figure and I have a son and parents and aunties and uncles and a whole bunch of friends and of course Jesus. So God didn’t lie. But most of these people are in the spirit world. They have died and even though God has allowed them to stay in the World of Spirits to hang with me until I die, I’m still completely alone in the physical. Getting to the place where I’m ok with this arrangement is not easy and saying that I’m grateful for a life in which all my family is dead is next to impossible. God keeps pointing out that in exchange for having my family in the afterlife I have been given all these gifts of clairvoyance and astral travel and experiences in the other realms and a big big work to do for God there. But I’m still freaked out about how closely my work resembles witchcraft and what other Christian people think of me and how unfair it is that I am stuck in a human body and all my friends and loved ones are free to frolic in the garden of prayer as I call the afterlife. I’m not very close to being grateful yet. Nevertheless, I don’t have free will. This is the life God gave me. I only get to choose with what attitude I will live it. Also I am not Eric I am Eric’s wife. My husband is dead. This is his Google account. I love to think he is still participating in the internet culture he loved so much when he was alive.

    In case I haven't mentioned this before 😇, these teachings of Swedenborg are very Baha'i-like. My feeling is that Swedenborg experienced Christian communities with churches in heaven because that was his background. You've mentioned before how Swedenborg described the various heavenly communities as being composed of like-minded people, or maybe people on the same spiritual level. Maybe that's why he was drawn to Christian communities. This same principle is mentioned in the Baha'i writings, that "like seeketh like".
    Have you read Mark Twain's Letters from Heaven? This book could not be printed in his lifetime because of how it made fun of the common understanding of heaven, the harp music 24 hours a day, the discomfort of being hit by angels' wings, etc. Many people my age cannot sit for an hour in church without becoming unconscious, much less endless days. And your mentioning the insincerity of people who listen to how we should be without any intention of actually practicing this life style, like loving your enemy and turning the other cheek. This is one of the main reasons, IMO that younger people are choosing to not belong to a church. They may want to belong to a religion, but they expect it to be sincere in practice.
    As you probably know, the Baha'i Faith is still young and evolving. We don't have churches, but we do have Houses of Worship, actually called "Dawning Places for the Praise of God", open to all people of all faiths or none to enter and pray or meditate. The purpose of these sacred buildings in the life of the community is for the people to start their day with prayer in the House of Worship and then going about their jobs and occupations in service to the community. Work done in the spirit of service is the same as worship, so most of your day could be considered worshiping God. There's no clergy involved.
    You mention all the different levels of heaven where people are drawn to according to their spiritual maturity. Baha'is are drawn to a level called "the Most Glorious" Kingdom. I don't know if Swedenborg mentions this Kingdom, or maybe it didn't exist in his day.
    I really liked your presentation!

      Harlan! Nice to hear from you again! Thanks for sharing your reflections on this topic. I love hearing about the parallels between Swedenborgianism and Baha'i.
      Mark Twain's book sound interesting. And yes, I agree that young people are looking for sincerity.
      I love your description of Baha'i houses of worship as a place to begin your day so that you can take your worship into your workday. "Work done in the spirit of service is the same as worship" aligns perfectly with what Swedenborg says! Chara here, and I had the pleasure of visiting a Baha'i Dawning Place in the Chicago area. Absolutely beautiful and serene and inspiring!
      To my knowledge, Swedenborg doesn't mention "The Most Glorious Kingdom" by that name. He does describe heaven as full of infinite variety, so who knows what wonders and levels and intricacies and glories we'll witness when we're there! Thanks, Harlan!

    I have a question. If people from the spiritual kingdom come over to the heavenly kingdom and preach to them because 'preaching' is not a thing in the heavenly kingdom, how are they able to do this? I thought I read in other parts of Swedenborg's works that people from the more outer kingdoms aren't able to breathe in the more inner kingdoms, and in fact, can't even see anything there. Are you able to shed some light?

    • @offTheLeftEye
      @offTheLeftEye  6 месяцев назад

      You're right about the breathability and visibility in different levels of heaven, Nadia. But Swedenborg talks about spirits can be prepared for visits to other communities/levels. Two of the key principles in heaven are LOVE and USEFULNESS, so if something needs to be done to fulfill those two things, accommodations can be made. That's a first, off-the-cuff answer. What do you think?

  • @sherihutchings
    @sherihutchings 6 месяцев назад

    I need some advice. I want to send my kids a Christian school, because I appreciate God being a part of their learning and I love loving values. However I notice that each school/religion has their own twist on their beliefs and this can cause a bit of negativity in my eyes. like it is veering off the loving path with some of the righteousness. Sometimes compassion is lost. We know from Swedenborgs teachings that God is basically all loving and I believe this. What do you guys do when it comes to steering your kids through a religious upbringing? Especially when you know all the things we know about our all loving God and the afterlife?

    • @offTheLeftEye
      @offTheLeftEye  6 месяцев назад

      I (Karin) hear you, Sheri! Just like with everything about parenting, there is not a one-size-fits-all answer to this question. (And frankly, no matter what tactic we choose as parents, it will work for some kids, only to seemingly backfire with others.) So what I can offer is to just choose a school that you can be most comfortable with, and then try to keep conversations going with your kids about what they are learning. If something comes up that you disagree with or feel uncomfortable about, you can share your differing opinion on that topic. It's actually a good way to instill in your kids that no one has a perfect understanding about things, and that they can feel free to reflect on anything that they are taught. Ultimately, it will be between them and God to decide for themselves what makes sense. And lastly, I can say as a mom of 4 grown kids, trust that God is taking care of them and leading them in developing their own beliefs, no matter what path that takes. You don't have to have the perfect answers or perfect strategies, but only to do the best you can and be there for them with love. ❤️

      As davidmandixy indicated, Swedenborg does address that a bit, Stephanie. He says that putting truth and wisdom to USE in the way we interact with others is the key. But I think there are probably uses being served by those isolated meditators, even if we can't see them openly. God, the Father of us all, has a much bigger description of "worthiness" than most of us would, it seems to me. It a person is alive in this world, there's SOME use they're serving.
