Finally someone making sense. Its insane how many comments are blaming Joel for "taking away Ellie's choice", as if she ever had a choice in the first place.
The reality is Ellie never had a choice because the fireflies were going to kill her while she was unconscious after trying to throw Joel out on the threat of killing him if he tried to intervene. And it's absurd and shitty of the game to make Joel just not bring any of this context up at all as he stands there and takes a verbal lashing

@@dragonpaulz_ i disagree that Ellie didn't consider the possibility of dying. She knew and felt that her life was so much more valuable than not at least attempting to grant a cure/vaccine for people. At the very end of the first game she mentions everyone who's died while she has lived. And in the second game we explore her guilt and anger even more of her living with the choice that was made for her and feeling like she could have sacrificed herself to make her life mean something. It is not until the end of the second game that she comes to terms with her life having still meant something to Joel and forgiving him for that choice he made for her. It doesn't lessen the anger she rightfully feels through the second game

Ellie then goes on a hunt to search for Joel. The day before Joel's death in the Last of Us 2 or Ellie's dreams in this case would have been when Ellie tried to forgive him. So, the next day they're out and Ellie falls and hits the back of her head. Joel finds out she's gonna live and that she has a coma and that's when he goes to Texas. This would be a good Part 3 imo.

I have only seen videos, but I agree that these are 100x more interesting than Abby and her thing. Joel and Ellie were the heart of the original game (even as we had one missing at some point or another, it all led to or was built around their bonding), so it's only natural that these flashbacks are where we feel at home, even the ones where they fall out with each other.....making such an unnecessarily BLEAK story was, in my humble opinion, not the way to go, and was not done properly. TLOU1 was dark, and the ending was very dark....but it was also happy in a way and even with that sort of...cliffhanger of an ending, we knew that one way or another everything would be fine, even if Ellie was to find out down the road. Here, what sort of closure do we get? Nothing. It's all bleak and dark for the sake of it, and Ellie ends up in a place she REALLY did NOT deserve.

I like the softer more human Joel from the second game more. The reason he gets killed is because he chose a different path than the one he was on in the first game. The Joel from the first game would have never fallen into Abby’s trap. But that’s exactly the point. He had done so many terrible things, that coming back from that life was impossible.

I think that's why the end of the game is ambiguous. It's to have a discussion about what we think Ellie knows. It's why I kinda hate that they made a sequel. The first game didn't need a sequel. It was it's own thing. The second game isn't horrendous, but it definitely takes some wind out of the sails of the first one by solidifying a lot of the ambiguity that made the ending great.

    • @denimmoneybrrr
      @denimmoneybrrr Год назад +69

Agreed! Tbh if they really wanted to run a sequel, TLOU2 should have just been Abby and her dad having to journey across the country (much like Ellie and Joel), with the big reveal at the end being that Abby's dad is THE surgeon. This way, we actually can build a bond with Abby through wholesome moments with her dad. Instead all we got was this humorless, flat character.
Then TLOU3 could have been about the clash of two storylines. It would've hyped fans up having just played Abby's game and not having seen Ellie for a long time. But oh well, maybe the show will handle things differently.

You gotta remember that Ellie saw herself as a chance to save humanity and that her immunity could save millions. They traveled across the whole country for this. Technically it was one lie told many times, and yes most people at the end of their lives want it to have counted for something. @@relaxhedx7064 In order to have a morally gray choice you need to have options. Joel never had any options other than save Ellie or be robbed and most likely murdered by a guard.
There was no other choice but to save Ellie. That's not gray. It's the morally correct option given the data Joel had at the time. In hindsight it's the objectively correct decision. You're conflating what Joel would have done with being morally gray instead of the quality of options before him, their probabilities and their context. A morally gray choice didn't exist. The firefly didn't give him one. He being robbed and murdered isn't morally gray and neither is saving a teenage girl. It's was OBVIOUS their was never going to be a cure given the collectables in the first game and the motif of the failed messiah in the collectables. Ish's community being the second best example following the Firefly researches recording and Tommy's admission.
I am debating this because there was no morally gray option in the first game. Joel simply saved an annoying teenage girl from being murdered without consent by a hack doctor's and the Fireflies' fever dream of looking for the light. There's nothing gray about this option. Joel's choice was the light in the darkness.
The game wasn't special with respect to anything outside of dialogue and voice acting. It's a mediocre game but it's one of the best of its movie simulation genre.

With Joel there is a minuscule chance that the Fireflies could have developed a vaccine since Cordyceps is a fungus, and even if by some miracle they did the vaccine would only work as a preventive measure in a world that is already overrun by infected. With Ellie there is a massive amount of survivors guilt and conflicted emotions knowing that your life was the one possible chance to save humanity and that the man you viewed as a father figure betrayed your trust and made the decision for you. The facial performance from Troy and the animators when Joel struggles to tell her is Oscar-worthy. I've felt exactly what he's feeling during a couple of my breakups, when you know what you have to say will hurt the person you're talking to and destroy the relationship. The words compress, dammed painfully behind your lips.
Here Joel knows that there's no more deflection. She's given him the ultimatum. But he knows that he'll end their relationship when the words come out. Worse than that, he's been hiding behind the lie for so long that he can't comprehend how completely the truth will devastate her. He foolishly tries to comfort her as the ramifications crash through her.
I never questioned why this cutscene was placed where it was, between the Nora interrogation scene and Ellie returning to the theater. During my last playthrough it hit me hard: Ellie wasn't shaking because of what she did to Nora, which was my original impression. She'd received the final piece of the puzzle that Joel had destroyed an entire community to save her. She was avenging someone who perhaps deserved what he got. "I made her talk," Ellie says, and she's reeling not from the brutality she inflicted but from the full revelation.
That's why this cutscene appears her. Her confrontation with Nora is the other bookends to this scene, when Ellie visited the place the Fireflies lost everything. Her memories of searching the hospital were now flooded with the images of Joel's massacre.
For all we know, she didn't even kill Nora. She may have learned who the Salt Lake crew was - who Abby's father was - and backed away in shock. She notes in her journal that she suspected as much, but the full truth was too much to bear. I can see her dropping the pipe in horror and leaving Nora to die.

This is the transfer of survivor's guilt. Joel's personality through the whole first game; his anger, his shield, his rage at not being able to save Sarah. Then he realises there's a chance to save Ellie and he does so and it's brutal and cathartic. Now in the second game he's super chill because he's absolved himself. But here he passes it to Ellie. Ellie now knows that every piece of happiness she has comes at the cost of the suffering of all humanity.

I could tell you what you already know; that it wasn’t five minutes ‘actually’ and that the transition happened after he’d been terribly wounded, nursed back to health by Ellie and then saved her from David. But if you didn’t feel that worked then that’s your truth. I sort of had the opposite in that when they found Tommy I couldn’t believe that he’d get rid of her. I was absolutely astonished in that moment - I don’t think I remember a game character ever acting so opposite to both what I expect and what I would have done if the game had (in that moment) gave me a choice.
My original point stands regardless. Joel’s guilt IMO came from not saving Sarah. I think we can justify his ‘dooming humanity’ in her name rather than Ellie’s if that works better. And I still think that in saving Ellie at the end he forgives himself for not saving Sarah.

Survivor’s guilt. In TLOU she talks about how everyone she loves has died or left, which is why she doesn’t want Joel to leave her. She later reveals that she found out she is immune after watching her best friend/crush die right in front of her when they were both bitten, and although they never say it, I think Ellie had to kill Riley when she turned. She is a child who has been deeply affected by the virus and wants her immunity to mean something for the world. She WANTED to die for the greater good. She wanted to sacrifice herself for the hope that no one else would ever have to lose someone to this virus. Joel KNEW that she would have willingly died to save everyone else, and he still took her choice away from her. Later on in TLOU2 we see a flashback where she tells Joel that she was meant to die at the hospital and that her life would have mattered. She feels that he stole her destiny and the potential for her immunity to save the world.
