  • Both Jack Daniel's Old Number 7 and Evan Williams Black Barrel are staples of the bourbon game. I decided to figure out which one is better both as a sipper and as a bourbon and coke. Jack and Coke or Evan and Coke.

    Comparing these two on the same day is laughable; Jack tastes and smells like jet fluid with aspartame, whereas Evan tastes and smells like bourbon. I cannot say enough bad things about Jack Daniels as the most overrated "whisky" probably in the world. Evan Williams is a great budget bourbon, can be enjoyed neat if you don't expect great complexity; I use it in cocktails or for got-home-late-and-want-a-quick-glass, and it's great! I wouldn't even clean my tools in Jack Daniels..

    well Evan Williams has 3% more alcohol which will add up when drinking several EW's and coke. Also the sugar is mainly what gives you the hangover. so its just less alcohol in Jack and coke. Ande alcohol gets converted back into sugar in your digestive system, so more alcohol more sugar- more hangover.

  • @scaryeyeball
    @scaryeyeball 5 лет назад +5

    Hi. I think Jack not only has a taste of "acetone" but also a strong nose of acetone/glue. It isn't unpleasant. But just what I always note.
    Also, the Evan Williams has an 86 proof compared to the weak 80 proof Jack. I think it even used to be 90 just a short while ago if I'm not mistaken. Which is more of a proper whiskey proof.
    Perhaps that's why you had more of a hangover drinking the same amount of Williams? Just sayin'.
    You're right about the better taste of Williams though. Comparatively. Especially for the price.
    Don't go blabbing about it too much though, because then it will raise up. ;)
    Also, those mixers you make are gigantic! I mean, "theater-sized" drinks. Make them smaller for God's sake. They will stay colder, less watered down from melting ice, and you won't look like Oprah at a McDonald's. You can always pour another. So instead of 3 of your buckets o' booze, have 8 tumblers o' tonic. Even a Jack and Coke shouldn't be poured, super-sized, into ones' face. ;_;

  • @mbspoobah
    @mbspoobah 5 лет назад +2

    You nailed it on all counts. The harsh edge of the JD, which diminishes it as a neat sipper, is what makes it ideal for a whiskey and cola. I've tried with no luck to make a whiskey and coke with finer bourbons and whiskeys - no way.

    I have slightly different opinions. Jack and Coke is my preferred, all around. Better taste, and as you noted, less hangover issues. But, for the price (generally 1/2 what Jack Daniels costs, Evan Williams is pretty much too good to even bother worrying about it. I find Evan Williams to be a mach better value, I found it at 16.95 for 1.75 lt. at a grocery store. It's great forv those times when you get home from work, you're tired and you just want a drink and you don't care if its a 10 dollar bottle or a 100 dollar bottle, you just want to unwind. Great job Bill!, Jack shure has it's place but Evan Williams does to!

    I slightly prefer JD but my wallet drastically prefers Evan's so I have been going with Evans more recently. However, if it's a special occasion, I'll splurge a bit for the JD. Nice review.

    Cheap whiskey usually gives you a horrible hangover especially when you add a sugary soda to the mix it makes it even worse. I would probalay agree EW is a better neat drink than JD because JD is just too sweet to me using the maple charcoal filter that Tennessee whiskey requires.

    • @steveamsp
      @steveamsp 5 лет назад +1

      The gut-rot from the sugary mixer certainly doesn't help with the hangover, I also think that drinking mixed drinks frequently leads to people consuming way more alcohol than they realize, and more alcohol generally means worse hangover. Interesting that your Evan Williams/Coke hangovers were worse than the JD/Coke, Bill

I want Evan poured at my funeral ✌🏻for all the good times, and the worse times .. you can’t go wrong with Evan’s .. American tradition at its best imo !!

    2-1/2 shots EW
    1 shot fresh lemon juice
    1 shot simple syrup
    Shaken

    I had a decent headache this morning but not terrible, i just slept it off then had pizza and Dr Pepper. I did buy the EW because of the price, but the drinks were very good.

    I have had the same exact experience. I drank jack for a while and switched to Evan and Jim beam because of the price and because I thought it tasted decent too. But after a while I definitely noticed that I would get way worse hangovers from the cheaper bourbons and even felt worse the same night. Though jack tastes almost the same, I feel like the quality is much better and I feel much better the next day compared to cheaper bourbons. I’ll stick with jack for as long as I live! Side note: the same goes for cheap vodka. Plastic bottles vs higher quality makes a world of difference surprisingly.

      40% vs 43%, so after your ninth ew you’ve had the equivalent of 10 jds. Unless that’s crammed into a short period of time i’d say that difference is negligible.

    I used to drink jack and coke when I was in Korea (50 years ago), mixed drinks were 25 cents at the NCO club and 10 cents during happy hour - fondly known as sloshed hour back then. Another drink i liked back then was Walkers Deluxe and ginger ale.
    Now I take 3oz of Evans to about 1oz of water, Iv'e been doing that for 40+ years now, A 1.75 of jack goes for close to $40 here while a 1.75 of Evans goes for $24.
    I think the Evans has a better taste when taken with water so why not save the $16 and buy a 12 pack of IPA with it?

    --- [1] I "taste" EW Black Label, 43% ABV, neat fairly (once per month) frequently. Being a base-grade Bourbon/Tenn Why (like, JD No.7, Jim Beam White Label, etc,), EWBL's 43% ABV carries more flavor than its lower 40% ABV base-grade group mates. EWBL's base-grade group mates are actually fairly decent for base-grade whys. However, because of the higher 43% ABV, EWBL is a bit better than its base-grade group mates. --- [2] At $10-14 per bottle, EWBL is a steal. --- [3] Even better, the EW Bottled-In-Bond, 50% ABV Straight Bourbon ($14-18) is even a better value & is a most excellent whiskey. Richard :)
