    70-79.5 - Worth trying, but you’re not missing out if you don’t.
    80-84.5 - I recommend trying.
    85-87.5 - Definitely try this!

    I'm fairly certain the charcoal filtering method they use does not disqualify their whiskey from being called bourbon, as it's considered a subtractive process and not an additive one. The reason they're called Tennessee Whiskey and not Bourbon is a matter of branding, pure and simple.

    • @SippersSocialClub
      @SippersSocialClub  4 года назад +22

      That could very well be true. But this is what they say on their official website: "Jack Daniel's is not a bourbon - it's a Tennessee Whiskey. Jack Daniel's is dripped slowly - drop-by-drop - through ten feet of firmly packed charcoal (made from hard sugar maple) before going into new charred oak barrels for maturing. This special process gives Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey its rare smoothness."

    • @xkristoferx
      @xkristoferx 4 года назад +18

      You are kind of correct. To be labeled as a TN whiskey, the spirit must be made in TN AND be charcoal filtered. This applies to ALL TN whiskeys except for Benjamin Prichard's Tennessee Whiskey
      who doesn't filter but was grandfathered in. While TN whiskeys are "technically" bourbon, purest will say that the filtering process removes the bourbon naming. So saying that TN whiskey is branding is correct but it is also a law just like 50% corn and new barrels are laws for bourbon.
      source: from TN

      @@xkristoferx All true. It meets all requirements to be called either spirit and chooses to be Tennessee Whiskey. Kinda splitting hairs at this point; I just didn't want the idea spreading that it doesn't qualify as bourbon. For some reason that's a common debate and many don't understand the underlying facts.

      Jason Coates oh it’s 100% splitting hairs, for sure. Even the US and Canada refer to TN whiskey has “bourbon made only in the state of TN” butttttttttttt the Tennessean in me says it’s different. It’s like saying whisky and whiskey are different spirits. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I was frankly amazed how much better the barrel select and the barrel proof were over the traditional Jack. Jack and Coke was a mainstay of my late college early 20s. The barrel select is like an "adult" version and I also recommend it.

  • @carlsonjeremiah88

    When JD makes the barrels for the No7 they use wood from multiple areas because the different altitudes change what the flavor is and when they make the single barrels they use wood from the same location they do some other things to make it special but when you pick up a bottle of single barrel there are a few different ones. So if you pick up a bottle and like it then get another you may not. So when you get a bottle look at the ring on the top of the bottle it will tell you what type of barrel they used so you can get the same one next time.

      Hey, Jack Daniels Cooper here. The wood sits on our yard for roughly a year, before that it dries on another yard for 5 months. It’s all the same wood, the single barrel however, comes from the cooperage in Alabama and they are typically selected from the top of the warehouse where temperatures reach 90 degrees almost year round

    Great review! Just been moving into Jack from Jim Beam. It's definitely a lot lighter and smoother. I'm mainly into the flavored whiskeys and the apple liquer hits the spot for me. The first time I drank it, it was so much less punchy and potent on the tongue than the Jim Beam Apple, it fucked me right up without me being any the wiser. Jack has a stealth quality to it. So smooth you don't quite realize how powerful it is until you acclimate. Again, great review though. I'll definitely be checking out the single barrel variant when I see it.

    The reason it isn't called a bourbon is due to being marketed as a Tennessee Whiskey. The charcoal is not considered an additive. Evan Williams is also charcoal filtered but is still a bourbon it's actually labeled a straight bourbon which is even stricter. Traditional JD fits all legal definition of a bourbon in the US.

    Jeremy, Great job on ALL these JDs without a SpitBucket! Hope you enjoyed all that you poured for those 8 bottles. I think JD is a bourbon but they chose to differentiate themselves as a sub-category using the title of Tennessee whiskey. I don't consider using charcoal filtering as an additive. Just like toasted and heavily charred and barrel finishes (red wine and rum, etc.) as long as they use an oak barrel for at least 2 or 4 years doesn't disqualify as a bourbon. I keep thinking about trying a bottle of the Double Barrel (SiB BP) but here it is about $65 so I'd rather enjoy ECBP and OF 1920 Prohibition and even KC SiB 120. But will look to try at a bar sometime. Glad you did this BIG run. And there are still at least 3 or 4 more JD offerings to try. Cheers and congrats!!

    I started drinking no 7 in high school. That was a man's drink. Shoot it back like a cowboy and nothing more American then Jack and Coke. Then I tried Gentleman Jack and I said, F No. 7. Then I tried the single barrel stuff and I said, F Gentleman. The Single barrel has been known to be a one trick pony, not very complex but I really like it. I don't care for Rye and the flavored stuff is garbage.

    The only Jack Daniel's Expressions that I have not tried are the liqueurs, the ryes, and the Single Barrel Barrel Proof... Of what I have tried, none of them does it for me. I can always find a whisk(e)y that costs the same or less and gives me more of the experience that I'm looking for... I have been told that the SBBP is the one to try, but I'm in no rush.
