    Love those old 289's. So easy to work on. Distributor right up front where it's supposed to be 😁

    • @deankay4434
      @deankay4434 Год назад +1

      Yes, but with HEI there was no need to pull the distributor every 30k for a tube up! I had a bet with the older gentleman who opened the shop 42 years earlier. The weights didn't wear the holes. Follow the sticker and tune. Check the carb for improper adjustments was the main thing, then they vented the choke pull-off and had to block that. Making sure idle throttles completely closed, manual secondary opener worked as in clear flood mode, adjusting the secondary air valve spring load was very important as the would hesitate if opened too soon, ran doggedly is closed to long. Adjust the air fuel mixture after checking for vacuum leaks with Kent-Moore propane enrichment tool & hose and pinching off the carbon canister purge hose from thermal vacuum switch as the Q-jet was the only true variable vacuum secondaries on the market until Fire introduced the "VV7200 & VV7400". And found out the Ford dealer techs did not understand the enrichment circuit with a water manometer. It easy if you had the gauge. I have two that goes to 28" of H2o. 12" & 16" are forever burned into mind. Under warranty, the carb with a standard 2bbl carb and lost many customers because the LTD could run 24 mpg on the highway by only 16 at best with the antique 2bbl carb. It was a shame as these where horizontal versions of motor cycles and Stromburg carbs. Only Ford chose a rubber diaphragm instead of an aluminum top load spring the piston acted against when the throttle valve was opened. I spent hours with the Ford service mgr, who had two Ford Engineers come into the dealer after hours. I spent 2 hrs per night for 3 nights (Short on the third) but took my papers drawings of a motorcycle carb next to the VV7400, left and nothing happened. They all asked good questions but I felt it was not getting thru. They changed the diaphragm material and issued a "TSB", then had techs drill a 3/32" hole on the back cover, but it dripped gas onto the intake if the diaphragm started to leak. I gave up, went home and back to work. 3 or 4 months later, they asked to a meeting in a building to offer a position with customer relations between mad Ford owners and an engineer from they department that was responsible for the complaint. Example; They had B+ to the sunroof switch that was a "DPDT" switch to operate two relays and three limit switches! Back, stop, forward, stop while open (Vent Mode) then closed. I told them in house, you can't do that without thermal resetting NTC thermistor at the fuse block. We argued but I proved them wrong each time as they used 14 AWG wire up the "A" pillar" across the headliner. It pulls 22 amps at stop open. 23 amps to stop vent and 27 amps to stop closed and not thermal limit at the fuse box that was time delay or current sensitive. So instead of changing the harness and removing the 20 amp fuses, they put 25 amp fuses in the box. These are heat sensitive devices not current sensitive. So, over a 5 week period, 12 cars had fires. They ask me to fly to Atlanta GA to look at a sunroof fire (Thermal Event) i asked if they had changed the wiring harness and fuses to NTac thermistors, they no! So Why would waist time fly down there and tell the same thing I said in Omaha. No good answer except we want a fresh set of eyes on it. I told the Ford guy the Einstein quote; " Doing the same exact thing over & over, and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity". He hung up and never heard from them again! True...
      DK, Omaha.

      @@kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160 Yes, air is sucked into them. It is just the complexity added to them over the years to meet "CARB" requirements. Anaerobic chambers added to change A/F ratio depending on altitude. The "Boost Control Deceleration Device" that opens durning periods of high vacuum for allowing cleaned air to by-pass the carburetor completely to not allow any hydrocarbons out the tail pipe. Under certain conditions, this is when mufflers exploding . GM called it a "Gulp" valve. Then Honda introduced a solenoid controlled vacuum device that had 24 hoses. I stopped at this point. The 289 "Special". 225 HP version. Had the tried and true 4V heads on it, and the Ford shoebox 4BBL. The cam was a milder spec than the K series engines, but this engine was a lot easier to drive every day, and it had plenty of giddy up to it.

    Was that you who pointed out that the rear wheel covers are different from the front, because of the front hubs? Musclecar Campy featured a very similar example recently, and one of you two learnt me about those wheel covers. Those Chrome Reverse-looking wheel covers are some of my favorites! Others being the turbine-style ones on early C3 Vettes, and the mag-style ones seen on '67-'68 Shelbys, which were also used by GM on (I believe) mid '60s SS Chevelles, and even on some MOPARS. Each manufacturer used their own center badge on them. Also love the Magnum 500-looking covers used on '70s Ford trucks, and have a set! Then there are the Halibrand-looking wheel covers on the '66 Galaxie XL...

    Beautiful car specially since I love red! Back when I was 16 had chance to buy Mercury comet. I'm pretty sure it was a cyclone but I don't remember. I had the 289 but I remember it being baby blue with the blue interior that was darker than the baby blue. The old boy tore it up a little bit turning into the road that led to his driveway and he caught the culvert. Tore up the arms and the fender on the passenger side. But even then the car had like 35,000 miles on it. The deal was for something like $200 to $300 I'll come by hit and the Chevy truck 1962 I think it was. I gave him half the money took the truck. Went home found out it's going to take another $100 at least back then to get the truck where it would barely pass inspection. Shorter stories and never bought that comet. But I can go right over and look at it to see if it was a cyclone or not. I soak the money into the old truck and since I didn't have the money to buy the car any longer I got a fellow that I knew would love to have it. So he got the deal. Fortunately he parked in his father's Barn after they hauled at home. If he hadn't he wouldn't have it today. But 25 years ago he fixed everything that was wrong with it and you can't even tell it today. It was Chevy truck I got rid of it 6 months after I bought it and fixed it up a little bit. I know that the brakes on that red mercury work better than the brakes on another infamous Mercury comet. Thanks for showing us the car

If I had it again I would upgrade to disc brakes up front with a dual master cylinder. Never liked keeping those old drums adjusted equally. Really didn't like having a wheel cylinder blow up front one day and almost hit my carport wall. Saved by the hand brake! The best thing about these cars from my perspective is driving on a warm day or evening with all of the windows down. A great experience I'd love to repeat.

      With subtle modifications- porting the heads, swapping driver’s side exhaust manifold with one that exits straight back from a newer Comet, and dual exhausts these engines can make a lot more power yet appear stock.

The Durability Comets were all stamped as 'F' but had true Ford K-Codes. I don't know about the BFX drag cars but it's clear they were K-codes. As for regular production vehicles, I doubt one exists. Every time I see someone claiming they have a K-code its based on the VIN and as soon as one looks it's obvious the car is not a true K-code. Obvious giveaways are the manifolds, lack of a 9" rear end, presence of PS and or PB as well as engine markings.
