+Robert Willis No, it wasn't a sound design. It was fundamentally flawed. For various reasons, they couldn't develop a really large chambered engine, and so had to cluster an obscene number of smaller ones together. These engines also relied on what was at the time the new tech of staged combustion. So, we had a situation where there were 30 new tech engines in the first stage alone, ( 6 times more than the Saturn V, for example, and thus at least 6 times the points of failure incorporated into the design)...plus they had a spectacularly complex system of fuel and oxidizer manifolds between these engines and the tanks (which were spherical and thus an inefficient design) and two additional stages to the overall vehicle, thus adding all those additional layers of complexity. Plus, they had to control this thing during its ascent by dynamically throttling these engines...which is crazy complex...and the Soviets lacked the advanced computer and electronics tech the Americans had access to in order to pull it off. Basically, Korelev, though a genius, was getting waaay ahead of himself when he first penned this thing. Could have been ego, I guess, believing himself capable of solving the problems with such an outrageously over-complicated design. We'll never know if they finally ever actually got it figured out, because there was never a successful launch. I'm work in design, and I can tell you, half a century later, that even by todays standards, such an insanely complex system was always going to be doomed to simple statistics.

same i remember watching this years ago sooo many times, videos like this is what made me love engineering and science and is the reason why im even in uni doing engineering and not doing some trade for the rest of my life

It’s fun watching this in 2022 knowing that it’s taken until now for SLS to start flying, SpaceX went bananas with Starship, and now that’s the lander.

great camera angles, editing, and added sound effects. to make it perfect you need that mod that changes the rocket exhaust based on air pressure, like scott manley has in his current KSP series.
it took me 100 launches to even remotely getting into space using Realism overhaul. Maccollo you should have added realplume to make it an even better cinematic. Even though the SLS mod is probably the only mod not configured for real plume but the lander engine was.Plus i love how RO gives me a 50% chance of crashing my game and having to wait 4 minutes for it to load back up. Murphy's law
+Shizzak The game crashed like 5 times while I was trying to record this video. Now I'm just like: Fuck it, the spaceX/SLS launched Mars mission with Nbody gravity is going to have to wait until 1.1!
even astronomers visual pack won't work and i am getting everything from ckan. Can't use bobcatind mod for the soyuz. lots of really good mods that need some extra tweaking. not to mention but the SLS exploration engine drops my VAB fps to like 0.5fps. have you every had a interstage or a fairing just blow up your entire rocket 8 minutes into an LEO burn. Too many times for me. I fixed it by adjusting the decouple force to something of 30%
+maccollo how did you get RVE working. I get the clouds the city lights and the ground textures but i don't have any atmosphere textures. When the creator said to put the shared asset into the plugin folder and overwrite it, it just crashes on startup
Shizzak I just installed it as per the instructions. If you have problems getting it to work you could try to start with a fresh install of KSP and start by just installing RSS and RVE.
+maccollo i did as you said from CKAN and github for RVE. It works but its a bit wonky. maybe it works better is ksp 1.0.4 but the only thing squad offers is either 1.0.5 or 0.90 beta
Now I want to see it launch with FH Block 5 Boosters, a quad landing of the boosters and this to launch in real life (Would it be called Falcon-SLS? SLS Block 3?)
No way. Clustering lots of boosters can be dangerous you know. The excess acceleration can seriously injure or even kill humans or kerbals. I refuse to build RSS rockets with s***loads of boosters unless I consider redesigning core(sustainer) stage.
The acceleration from using four 5 segment boosters isn't actually that bad. The boosters are already to small for the SLS core with a big upper stage, and their thrust actually drops over the two minutes that they are active, so the acceleration peaks at around 3 Gs.
***** That's only possible if Kerbal SRBs have thrust curve, but as of now, I have to split just one SRB pair into several SRB stages, each stage giving different TWRs by changing the amount of fuel and thrust. I use SMURFF mod instead of RealFuel or Realism Overhaul mod BTW.
The music... oh god the memories Additionally, watching your videos made me try RO. I fell in love before clicking the "launch" button... Only to have it ripped away when I found out my computer can barely handle an orbit capable sounding rocket (less than 20 parts) without some extreme framerate losses on minimum graphics settings.
+Jonah Beale (RCFlyer) It might be the ullage simulation that's using all your CPU capacity. Just open the real fuel config file (realSettings.cfg), and set the "simulateUllage =" line to false.
+maccollo It's getting much better, however a couple of times a second the game stutters with a good framerate in between. Any ideas? Thanks for the help; I just managed to put a 3 person command pod & service module into LEO.
+Jonah Beale (RCFlyer) From what I've read that's caused by the KSP garbage collector. Actually I had the same problem, especially with this rocket. I was able to reduce it significantly by setting up a profile for KSP in the Nvidia control panel with the max number of prerendered frames set to 1. i.imgur.com/3EobR4A.jpg
+maccollo I'm almost there, I've uninstalled most of the non-essential mods for RO, and my framerate has increased drastically. Currently I'm attempting an Apollo 8 style mission, (3 kerbals to lunar orbit) of course launching it atop a very spicy launch vehicle ;)
+The Dockpacka Keeper The key to rendezvous is combining patience and careful orbit adjustments. You also have to use the nav ball a lot, keep the prograde and pro target vectors aligned and keep the velocity under control and you'll get there. Scott Manley made a good tutorial video on this, it helped me understand the concept. For my first rendezvous I built two crafts specifically designed to be easy to maneuver during docking. I kept the relatively light with 4 way RCS thrusters equidistant from the center of mass of the craft. I put one in a perfectly circular orbit to make things easier, then I launched the second one and flew it closer nice and slowly. It gets much easier after the first successful time, it's like something clicks into place in your brain, you get that "OOH, that's how you do it, of course!" moment. :D
Excellent video. Things have changed a bit since you did this. SN10 just had to blow up, but it did land, proving Starship is making fantastic progress. NASA's CEV or whatever it's name is now is delayed, again. It did fly, made a mistake, it was recovered, so it's going to work and work well. But things are improving, plenty of optimism.

Even with the daylight? I thought it would be impossible to see stars in the daylight of the moon... Mainly because of the reflection of the light on moon's surface, offuscating the stars.
KV_IRA the reason you couldn’t see stars from the pictures on the moon was because the moon reflects a lot of light. In order to be able to see detail on of the surface of the moon and of the astronauts. They brought the exposure of the camera way down. Good video, but are you sure solid boosters are not powerful enough? Watch this solid rocket booster test for the SLS rocket ruclips.net/video/Qn6OvHofcoo/видео.html Or did you mean the solid boosters in the mods you were using were not powerful enough?
Quite certain. The 5 segment boosters only allow for 120 tons of initial mass to LEO with the EUS upper stage. That's not enough to do this mission with Orion. The quad F9 setup has about 58% more impulse than the 5 segment boosters.
i dont understand wyhat is this a recreation of a future space program or what the heck but this was a masterpiece especially when u transfered the idk those people into the other capsule , very well planned

Well said my friend.... well said.
If you don't know it, it's "I am the Doctor" by Murray Gold I believe.
+Thomas Wingfield was it from the 50th anniversary?
+Thomas Wingfield Yeah I know, one of my favourite of all time but thanks anyway!
+Top Hat Towers No, it was originally in the first 11th doctors episode
Looks like a cigarette
Still not as many engines as the ITS. :D
boost an SLS with 4 ITS boosters now thats something i wanna see
Drake Hamilton Strapping the SLS core stage onto an ITS stack would be more imaginable (though pointless due to the ITS core's low thrust).
NetRolller3D ah screw it! SLS strapped to ITS strapped to SLS lets go!
BigDiglett omg!
This video has put doctor who to shame. THIS IS AMAZING!
OH MY GOSH THE "I AM THE DOCTOR" SONG AT THE OPENING
Doctor Who!
Good video, but are you sure solid boosters are not powerful enough?
Watch this solid rocket booster test for the SLS rocket ruclips.net/video/Qn6OvHofcoo/видео.html
Or did you mean the solid boosters in the mods you were using were not powerful enough?
This is for going to the moon BTW
Quite certain. The 5 segment boosters only allow for 120 tons of initial mass to LEO with the EUS upper stage. That's not enough to do this mission with Orion. The quad F9 setup has about 58% more impulse than the 5 segment boosters.
***** If that is not enough to go to the moon then how the heck will SLS get to mars? Also how much does your lander weigh?
***** Protips for docking?
Put the docking ports together.
Every body gangster till it lands on da moon
That has to be the best astronaut I have ever seen!
Its when you do those missions return to earth and go "shit I forgot a parachute" that are the best
Or ablator amounts aren't sufficient from excessive mass savings.
Kerbel Space program, the game for geniuses. Nice vid!
That was the most beautiful gameplay ever created
For some reason, I find this more inspiring than all the NASA stuff. Lol.
i dont understand wyhat is this a recreation of a future space program or what the heck but this was a masterpiece especially when u transfered the idk those people into the other capsule , very well planned
love the music so geronimo!
Really nice video:)
Love the Doctor Who music, I knew I recognized it but it took me a minute to remember where it was from.
Ah that music and that sweet Roaring sound.
They asked him "how much thrust do you need?"
"ALL OF THE THRUST"
Psychiatrist : The Frankenrocket can't hurt you, It doesn't exist
