Beyond Sol | A Mission to Proxima Centauri in KSP / RSS / RO

Proxima Centauri is the nearest star to our own, Sol. With a 4.2 lightyear gulf separating Earth and the rocky exoplanet Proxima Centauri b, traversing such a massive distance is substantially more difficult than simple interplanetary missions. Proxima b, in this video, is theorized to have a thin atmosphere, be slightly larger than Earth, and have a very flattened, weathered surface due to the lack of tectonic activity and near-tidal locking to its home star.
Filming this mission has been a journey in and of itself. I've actually filmed 3 other, unique, ready-to-release versions of this mission, but I decided not to release them because I simply didn't believe that they lived up to my standards. I'm really happy to release this one and I hope you enjoy it.
Ground operations on Proxima b were inspired by @reach6898 in their Proxima colonizing mission.

Disclaimers:
The debug menu was used during this mission to avoid nasty bugs caused by being on an exoplanet among other problems, though rest assured that the only times I used the debug menu were for getting around these bugs. Additionally, I custom-configured many parts to function properly with Realism Overhaul and to meet the requirements for my mission. Do not expect your game to behave the same way with the same mods I used.
Also I'm aware that in the thumbnail I wrote "Nearest Star," what I mean is the nearest star to us other than Sol.

I've been getting a LOT of questions about torque cancellation from the rotating habitats, so here's why they both rotate in the same direction:
Both habitats are from a mod, and the mod includes counterrotating counterweights on each of the centrifuge parts, individually canceling out the torque on each centrifuge. There was no option to remove the counterweights on the parts, so I didn't bother making both centrifuges counterrotating as it didn't matter torque-wise and was easier to launch.
Cant wait to see what you’ll achieve with KSP 2
How long did it take to get to proxima centauri?
question the mods i downloaded made by Nertea dont seem to work the for me at all. any help would be appreciated.
@@ericgolightly8450 current technology 6,300 years !!!!
also if it diddnt do that, and you had them counterrotate, there would be a small torque wich would push the craft off-axis
Here’s me being proud of finally pulling off a crewed Duna landing and return in stock… this is just insane
Thank you!
Once you've successfully returned from Duna you can pretty much go anywhere, it's just about scaling up at that point

Just shock and awe. Looks like hundreds of hours sitting, tweaking retrying, calculating, thinking, engineering, planning. What the actual. I remember how I felt like a little kid getting his first toy when I first time managed to land on Mun, then on Minmus, then building a working rover and landing it on Mun and Minmus and then... When I actually did my first rendezvous mission and started to use landers rather than stages to land on bodies, and not to mention how my satelite network evolved as well. From antennas stuck up a basic module to sophisticated carrier rockets with 3 satellites to achieve a triple geo-stationary network... My best achievement in that playtime was to send a satellite carrier to Duna in preparation for a landing mission. I never got to that landing mission before I quit playing the game. I just needed a change, didn't have what it takes to play so long in one game even if it's fun. Respect to you though!

Looking forward to you making videos with KSP 2, going to be a whole other level of amaze i feel. :D
I dont think KSP 2 will really surpass what was shown in the video, most likely just make such feats more widely available and less likely to fail because the devs never bothered to fix the game's physics them selves.
Cinematic and technical masterpiece. Game such covered with mods, that if somebody will told me that it's not the game - just rendered 3D cinematic - I'll believe.

Idk how yall do it, i can barely launch my first rocket with that modpack and here you are going to another star system. Amazing work
I did something similar myself except I didn't need to freeze my crew **Laughs in Warp Drive module** **Cries in how much power it drains to the point where you need a singularity reactor not to mention it adds an Anti-Gravity effect to my ship when it's fully charged with Exotic Matter** and I also never left the sollar system... GOD DAM
I love that you build it with "realistic" payloads - instead of just making an unrealistically massive rocket to put it up. The confinement's of the rocket also means you need to build smart.
Your Vehicle reminds me a bit about the ISVs from Avatar - except it pulls its payload were you pushes it, and the ship only uses the rotating habitat modules when coasting, and in the burn and deacceleration phase accelerate at a constant 1.5g to make the gravity... and ofcourse it uses a photon beam and a huge sail to accelerate and deaccelerate on the tour from and to earth. (But that is beyond the scope of Kerbel i gather xD )
Cool video.

Nice Animation, TY, very nice work.
props for using the beyond earth ost.
I think you won the game. What an amazing feat to pull off!!!!!
Wow! That's an achievement on KSP indeed.
In real life, the only changes to it would be thousands of ships in fleets (to better guarantee success), and the shield would be many and they would fly in formation millions of miles ahead for protection (if a particle the size of a grain of cigarrette smoke hit the ship, the gamma radiation produced would kill everyone). Pretty minor tweeks really. You nailed it.
hence the particle shield
@hobogrifter: No, that shield as designed is worse than none. Go take a read on the Newtons conservation laws, your answer is there. Here's a hint: Try flying several shields millions of miles ahead of the ship with people. Also, why only send one ship when you can fly a fleet of ships for safety and redundancy?
this is absolutely amazing
Really nice job!

I CAN NOT WAIT FOR THIS GAME
It looks a lot like the ISV Venture Star from Avatar!
Well not really actually
it does
It doesn't really look similar
@@man-from-2058 yeah it does. It doesn’t need to be an exact recreation to look similar. It’s got the spindly mid-section, the massive circular fuel tanks, the particle shield, and the shuttle docking on it. The similarities are there.
The venture star is based on the real life concept design of the "valkyrie"
in the film, the shuttle is called valkyrie, and in real life a similar concept shuttle was called venture star, for some reason they switched the names
The particle collision shield doesn't protect the ship after it turns around to decelerate. You need one on both ends. Of course the engines will still be vulnerable, but maybe the outward thrust will deflect any colliding objects.
one on both ends? xD or you could just move it halfway
Or even a second pair of engines that can stick out beyond the shield

Which LS mod are you using?im currently preparing my interstellar mission with USI-LS,it seems to be possible, what exact problem did you run into?I might be able to help
@@dragonking3431 Sorry for the late reply, i thought i already answer to you lol
I was using Snacks! mod as i mentioned before, the problem i still get, is that im not able to produce snacks faster than my kerbals consume it. I also tried USI but it seem too intricate and honestly, it likes me, but due his learning curve, is probably for another moment...
It’s relatively simple once you have it figured out once, the main factors are habitation and supplies, for habitation there’s 2 values that determine how much of it a part gives, multiplier and months, months just simply adds more time to the hab timer for the amount of Kerbals it affects, multiplier multiplies the habitation of all things on the ship, generally you want a good balance of the 2,most parts have that automatically though so you don’t really need to worry about it,generally the best option to get more hab time is spam the atlas module from SSPX until you reach 50 years with your desired amount of Kerbals, once it reaches 50 years it goes to infinite.for supplies first you have the normal consumption, every Kerbals consumes a certain amount of supplies per day(I don’t know it right now,you can look it up on the USI wiki though),this can be drastically reduced using recyclers though, you should have enough of them to affect every Kerbal, you can set the SSPX greenhouse modules to life support mode and they will become great recyclers(for my own mission I need to support 400 kerbals on a 20 year trip though,so I made myself a very large recycler part, most recyclers have a relatively low number of crew affected and tweakscale doesn’t work on them).then you have the greenhouses, they use fertilizer and mulch(which is produced by kerbals as they consume supplies, you don’t have to worry about it at all),producing supplies using fertilizer is much more efficient than just simply packing them, you get ~10x more supplies out of a given mass of fertilizer than you get if you normally packed them, essentially pack as much fertilizer as you need for the with fertilizer readout on the mods menu to be long enough for your mission, then make sure your greenhouses supply production can keep up with the rate kerbals consume it at(I usually just launch the vehicle, test if it can keep up then revert flight, you can calculate it but the numbers are hard to work with and there are way too many modifiers involved)
Woowwwwwwowwww
Holy mod list, getting it all the work is a game in itself

What's KSP 2?
Kerbal space program 2
Mankind was born on earth, it was never meant to die here.
love your vids! I'm curious how do you manage to get such smooth framerate?
Thank you! Well, I didn't have such smooth framerate... at least with the raw video. I do some processing to my raw video before it's watchable. Before I even begin filming, I slow down the game with Time Control, so that my final product isn't substantially sped up. Next, I run my footage through FFmpeg, where I use the mpdecimate tool to remove all the duplicate frames in my raw footage (from recording 60fps on a program that's running at like 12fps). Then, I speed it up or slow it down in my editing software (DaVinci Resolve) to sync with the music.
@@EntropianVFX thanks for the info!
