In order of severity of the incline:
#1 slow down, don’t accelerate
#2 serpentine
#3 switch to elevated mode
Great advice!
I like that you put elevated mode last. It's a last resort and better for skate parks (pending what your doing.
Elevated mode can get you into trouble when you go back down hill. If your on a steep street with any traffic at all and need to slow down and or reverse quickly, it will be more difficult to do so.
Sometimes, simply descending down the other side of the hill or turning around to go back down will be sketchy as you grind your tail all the way down, forgetting you had elevated mode on.
It's a little like the suggestion about driving on snow. Don't go faster than what you can react and safely stop to. Steep declines are like driving in ice and snow when your riding the tail down 😱.
(never put fangs or any hardware thicker than float plates on your tail. This will decrease tail clearance, which is very dangerous on declines.)
@@Byromie That was SOOOOOOO HELPFUL! THANK YOU. I've been wondering about elevated mode (haven't tried it yet) those tips will help me if I need to or what to watch out for.
@@freshlycharged So when you rode the hill were you in elevated mode?
@@gfranks007 I was not. I'm not in the practice of changing digital shaping during rides. I like to set it and forget it.
Thank god I found this, I just pulled the trigger on a pint and I live in Seattle. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to make it up Capitol Hill but going up Queen Anne?? Dude, that seriously put my mind at ease. Thank you so much for the tips.
I see OneWheel’s every day around Capitol Hill and downtown Seattle. I’m seriously considering getting one for my commute. Great video!
Which do you see more, onewheels or electric unicycles?
Jimmy Chang definitely OneWheels, but electric unicycles are also pretty common around here.
Thank you for clearly explaining the terminology and cause of the "nosedive." I'm sick of everyone who eats it on their Onewheel saying they had a nosedive.
I nose dived on an incline, Didnt feel the push back, and crashed hard with little time to brace 😱 ouch!
Thought I may have broken a rib, hand/palm was grazed as well as my pride, changing my shirt was difficult for several days after that.
I bought some wrist guards too because I felt the impact there.
Too a break for a couple of weeks & returned, with a little more experience 😆
Also always wear a skull bucket!
Geez Louise! That's steep and I'll have more confidence dealing with the little bumps we have here in central NC. Thanks for sharking J.
The Seattle street's can be brutal. I am still learning on my pint but there are so many cracks and potholes that can throw you off balance. One hill I went down, I did get 25 percent regeneration.
Getting one soon may I ask what is regeneration pertaining to the board?
@@drizzydrew98 Regenerative charging is a feature of the electric motor. The board utilizes unused potential energy to refill the battery as you slow down while traveling downhill
That's incredible lol Makes me wonder if riding down a mountain you'd overcharge.
*streets
Great video. Didn’t realize pushback was a warning about exceeding capability rather than a top speed indicator. Loving my pint.
Most helpful and informative video to date in my humble opinion. Well done sir. Appreciate the knowledge gained.
Hey bro just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to create content about different Onewheel gear.
Thanks Scot. Thanks for all the energy you always bring to the community!
I was just in Seattle last weekend with my wife for a quick trip to see the space needle and glass museum. I saw all the steep hills, especially near the harbor. I wondered how my onewheel would have handled them. Thanks for sharing! 👍
Love the video Mr. Chang keep up the great uploads. I look forward to watching your videos everyday after school see you next vid.
I didn't know about the regen. Thanks for including that in the video!
Best hill test video there is. I’m super impressed with the pint hitting those. Also Kerry park is a nice touch. Took my wife there for our first date 12 years ago
Great videos Jimmy! You inspired me to buy a onewheel. So much fun!!
Loving the soundtrack in this video Jimmy!
Most. useful. Onewheel. video. ever. Thanks for making such an informative video!
Thanks for watching it.
I just got a onewheel for my channel and I had nosedive anxiety from going up the hill. I noticed my board was just a couple of inches from nose diving and I hopped off the board and did all the tips you told me.
You do a very good job on your video's!! I get my pint today, and I feel I already got the cheat codes, thank you!!
Thanks Josh! Enjoy and be safe.
Yeah Jimmy I nosedived going uphill once and it caught me by complete surprise. I've noticed my board can take pretty much all downhill declines but uphill is a different story. Nice video!
The little pint that could. Great vid. thanks
Day 4 on the Pint and just had my first nosedive on an uphill section! As you said, didn’t feel a hint of pushback so ended up flat out - thankful for my wrist guards and now considering knee pads for some rides. Just scrapes and bruises this time.
Be safe out there! Thanks for sharing this experience.
Great video! I just bought a pint and fangs in seattle. I was planning on going up denny from westlake sometimes, although my commute will be flat, I wanted to be able to go up to capitol hill. This video put me at ease and I definitely feel better about the possibilities. I probably won't be taking it up to kerry park any time soon though. Thanks!
Entertainingly informative as usual

I love your videos Mr. Jimmy Chang. I watch your vids everyday.
I learned this the hard way haha two nose dives later I think I got it! Watched this a bit late. Thanks for the video on these good tips.
i never thought of trying to carve uphill. I always thought tackling it straight up is best. Thx jimmy u gave me a new way about approaching hills, can’t wait to try it out!
Your California trip look like a lot of fun. How are the hills in Taiwan?
Jimmy Chang cali was great, didn’t see any onewheels but amongst tesla owners it seems like a lot of ppl own one and use it as their last mile mobility device while supercharging. In Taiwan we don’t have a lot of hills in the city. Most hills would be mountainside outside the city
I wanted to see a picture with you and Elon Musk side by side.
Jimmy Chang I signed a NDA. I can’t say if I met him or not 😆
An even better way that I've have leaned to carve up hill is to switch direction without turning into the hill. This involves being able to ride "normal" or "goofy" stance. It is not easy at first. It's like trying to write with your non-dominant hand. It takes practice, and I do mean to practice on flat ground first. Practice switching stances to change direction. This probably won't work for the Pint now that I think about it since it has simple stop and doesn't switch directions like the XR can.
Good Pint & life tips!
That service sounds amazing! If it wasn't $200 I'd rent one next time I visited home on the east coast. Man I wish the XR could fly D:
amazing to see people pack together before cv19. miss those days
Great tips and vid!!!
Thanks for your reviews. I'm thinking if getting the pint.
My wife and I are about to go on a trip that involves hills. Great advice as always!
Be safe and have fun!
@@freshlycharged We finished posting our first onewheel video together, would love if you checked it out! i'm still learning about stability and figuring out what works best with my limited tech :)
As a heavier rider (240lbs) I can assure you there's no way my Pint would make it up those hills and I'd be somewhat uncertain about speed control on the way down. Diet time!
Yes.Cut down 90% on all sugary foods,drinks & pasta,bread,cookies.
You'll loose 20lbs in the first month or more. 👍👍🔥😎🎉😂
We thought about doing a very similar video... but then we remembered we were in (flat) Florida. Nice one Jimmy
Ha!
Thank you Bro, I am looking for something to commute of whidbey island to the ferry which I have a vehicle on the other side. I bought an ev scooter and it could not even go up the smallest hill (segway ninebot 900$). Your video sold me because you are dealing with the same shit I go through everyday. The other cool thing is it looks like your riding a skateboard. Awesome video and very helpful.
Demo program sounds pretty sweet
I love your videos bro. Just subscribed!
Thanks for the support! More Onewheel content to come.
The fender is a must have!
Yes but it doesn't come on these rental onewheels that you get from suprents.
you help me a lot . just shipped one pint here to brazil. tkx
Hope you love it!
Hi jimmy I have good news also question below in comments. My family is letting me ride nowadays in my neighborhood and to the shopping center. I finally got more confidence riding as well. I started on pacific mode and trained on small hills. After a few days I wanted to go on the bigger hills. So I tried elevated mode. I found that elevated mode helps my anxiety on new hills I haven’t been on before. But I enjoy skyline overall because it accelerates fast to overcome bumps, to go up hills without leaning too much toward and is the best bet for braking downhills. It saved me this time I was taking a detour and didn’t expect to bump into a huge hill. It went up and down the scary hill like it was on a track or something. Very fun to ride but I sure need to get safety gear. I’d totally recommend safety gear to the next people that ask me about the pint. Also thank you for posting a lot of videos. It motivates me a lot to keep going, learning and to enjoy the outdoors
Question 1. Is elevated as fast as skyline just more elevated to keep the rider more safe from the front/nose touching the hill or bumps, etc? (Like acceleration I mean. I noticed some changes in acceleration in other modes but I forgot to check skyline and Elevated mode speed differences as well so unsure if speed and acceleration would be different in those two modes)
2. Is elevated safe for downhills and dismounting uphill or downhill in case of emergencies? I’ve dismounted off of some hills with skyline but some uphills fling you off and downhill sometimes is too deep and the engine turns off with simple stop causing a backwards nosedive with simple stop so not sure how I’ll stall enough to let a driver pull out from their home’s parking (sometimes the park I go to the house’s have cars pulling out unexpectedly on the uphill and downhill to get there)
3. I’ve been having issues connecting app to the pint. It would connect and disconnect most of the time. Hopefully it isn’t just me
4. Since I got the hang of skyline should I stay on skyline all the time since my commute has tons of hills? Sometimes pacific can do it just the nose sometimes will dip if I hit a bump or don’t build enough speed early on the hill or before hill or when those emergency moments where I need to stop for a car pulling out of their house on the hills.. Skyline accelerates fast just in case I stall stop (stopping while slowly balancing forward so the engine doesn’t turn off when braking) for the unexpected cars that pull out on the hills.
Thank you again. Sorry if my questions and etc might be messed up or misunderstanding. It’s 3 am here and I couldn’t sleep because I’m still mind blown that I survived my pint engine stalling on elevated uphill
Jimmy, did you have the Pint on Elevated shaping? I've been trying it on grass hills. It takes some getting used to but it seems to help.
Funny I nosed dived going up a short steep hill last week, I was going to slow, Im to fat and had no warning other than my XR struggling....Ok that was enough but being able to litterally walk it out was great and a huge eye openeer. This has me thinking about getting out of mission.
I live in he Oakland hills, where it's 5 miles down a hill to downtown. I have had my Onewheel XR for a week now and I've been riding it around in the hills. I'll definitely be able to tell you what it's like to ride daily on steep hills after I put a few miles on it.
So fun!
You made me get a OW Jimmy. First try this friday. Lets see how it goes.
looks exactly like my town of Duluth MN.. Im sold lol
I always worry about nose diving going up hill bit haven't yet...i won't even try hills of a certain steepness...almost had my board shut off on me when i barely went down hill on a full charge. Really surprised me...definitely plan your route so you don't begin going down hill!
@@deanbotton7298 I have the XR...and yeah it tries to warn you twice before it shuts off. I was at 98% and going for like 15 seconds and then hit the brakes slightly as I went down hill and it warned me the board would shut off if I continued to brake at all. Didn't actually happen cuz I got to level ground after that but it freaked me out!
Thanks for the videos but on most of those sideviews I have to hold my phone diagonally to level out the doors and windows of the houses. Some added dramatic effect?
If I had to choose, I'd nosedive uphill rather than downhill. Less time to accelerate towards the ground. Any snowboarder will confirm this. The impact is much smaller if you fall uphill.
I always liked wrecking cars while going uphill for the same reason.
Just got my Pint yesterday and can’t stop riding. Lol, I’m in Colorado Springs, where are you Jimmy?! You should put a group ride together.
Thanks for the tips! I'm about to buy a Pint but I'm in a hilly region, your video gives me some confort (even if I can say I'm a little scared as well ^^)
And you should be scared. The pint is okay on hills. Doable but you need to be careful.
@@freshlycharged ok ^^ so maybe a XR would be more appropriate
I was surprised by the power of my pint. I have gone up and down some steep hills - I live in a hilly area and almost didn't buy the pint because of it - but I have not had one issue doing this as I use the "Don't overpower the motor." I live in NJ (Near and Around Montclair) which has SOME STEEP STEEP hills.
I wish I watched this video before my onewheel arrived. My first ride on My onewheel had a highlight in the form of a nosedive going up hill. I didn't know about it and thought I would get momentum to make less strain to the new motor. Luckily it just resulted in a small hole in my hand and sore elbow and hip. I successfully rolled but when my elbow and hip rolled around they hit pretty hard on the concrete. To add insult when I arrived home my pads where on the doorstep from amazon. Better late than never lol.
Does this hurt the motor? The manual says not to go past a 15 degree hill. I myself have gone past this multiple times, but I’m not sure if I should not be doing that?
Hi Jimmy, cool video thank you. Hey what helmet are you wearing? Looks like a baseball cap with the visor.
Great video and gained a new sub, but I will say-like you mentioned in a previous video your voice really does put me to sleep, LOL.
I rented a pint x off someone from Facebook marketplace and I was super bummed that the performance was super low. It couldn't make it up hardly any midsized hills without nosediving. Well, turns out the tire pressure was only 9.5 psi. It's supposed to be 20. The battery was dying super fast too. That explains it. So make sure you keep an eye on that tire pressure too!
And yeah maybe I should have rented from SUPrents instead. They probably check their tire pressure more often.
If you do that Serpentine pattern it is easier if u lean each way to nose dive due to the boards turn mecanics in the software
You should say hi to the Moment people, they love onewheel, goes well with the use of their lenses.
Could you safely ride down these hills? I haven’t seen any video on onewheels braking down hill and would love to know their capabilities.
When going down hill how do u break
if it goes too fast or how do u stop or slow down to control
Michael Dande lean back slightly with your knees. Vice versa to move forward
Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Chang! You will need to try and navigate the steepest hills in San Francisco :) There are some that will stop a Onewheel (most vehicles aside from a car) for sure. Seattle is such a beautiful city. I have my hyper scooter coming soon so I will be tooting around San Francisco and commuting with it soon.
JIMMY CHANG!!!
It is NOW time for a NEW more refined XR! The pushback on the pint sucks! FUTURE MOTION MAKE ONE!
Damn I was most curious about how much the regen put back into your battery. What was the regen % in the app?
Hey Jimmy. Isn't there a "hill" setting that can be used for some of that uphill portion? Or does that setting not work very well? Not sure if the Pint has all the normal settings.
I usually set it and forget it. I don't like messing with the app.
@@freshlycharged I am the same. I set it and forget it.
I didn't know these things, and now I am bleeding . . . I nose-dove hard, uphill. I am sure it was pushing back, but I did not realize it. Lesson learned.
Jimmy, what is it like to fall on your specific wrist guards? I noticed they are not as bulky as other ones that I have seen.
They are the fingerless gloves by flatland3d.
Bikes, ebikes are better in almost every aspect of transportation.
Onewheel doesn't require locks, or a secure lock up area outside a destination. Onewheel fits into a car far more easily. If you're too lazy to bike all the way that's a big plus for onewheel.
how does it compare to the xr on those hills/?
Aloha Jimmy My Name Is Allen From Hawaii I’ve Got The One Wheel Pint & This Video Made Me Really Curious About What Was Your Battery Percentage Going Up These Hills Because from My Personal Experience I Tried My Board Going Uphill And not even 10 min into my riding from a 100% charge Going Uphill Killed Half Of My Battery Life & I just felt Really Disappointed about the product it probably is just not made to go uphills as far as battery life ? Mahalo Allen
The overcharge protection is moreover about protecting people from an overcharged battery, rather than protecting the battery. Remember, these are lithium ion batteries that can catch fire or explode under such conditions. Not something you want in your house as you go to sleep, or in an airline overhead compartment.
Lol no way. Just moved to queen anne and bought a one wheel. I think I live on one of the steepest hills in queen Anne. I haven't tried it on my hill yet. 🤞
Your wife left you in the dust...
Do you have to brake going down hill to recharge? And, if so, should you go down the hill slowly as possible if you want to charge more? Seems like making the onewheel slow you down would require power? To counteract the force of gravity using the motor? This confuses me most about regen!
@@deanbotton7298 so its not "regenerative braking" it's "regenerative freefalling"?
@@RW-zm4cv ruclips.net/video/_p4h3jwJob0/видео.html
Hey Jimmy, just got my pint a few days ago and was wondering how noticeable push back is on flat ground? I was going around 14.5 mph but didn’t really notice anything. I’m afraid of nose diving by unknowingly pushing through push back.
P.S. thanks for the videos they helped me pull the trigger on getting one and I’m glad I did!
Much more noticeable than on the XR... Not sure what else to compare it to. Put it in Redwood and the pushback and nosedive will come earlier.
@@freshlycharged Thank you!
@@freshlycharged lol...
Did you say don’t go down hills when you’re at 100% battery? I live on top of a hill. A fairly big one. I will have to go down the hill in the first 100 yards of a full recharge. Will this force a motor shut down? Receive my OW tomorrow hopefully. Super stoked.
yes
Before rides I warm up in my driveway/street with circles and figure 8s. It helps my ride, and takes but a few minutes. Your battery should drain well by then. If not, you can zig-zag downhill, so you're not at a constant high angle of attack.
I’m 62 and just ordered the pint. I have to admit I’m scared of falling yet will definitely not be put off and will ride with caution. Considering buying football pads to protect my clavicle while learning. Would the small wheels in front (fangs?) be helpful going up hills? Helmet, gloves, wrist guards and kneepads. Balance is everything
Fangs are no replacement for safe and skilled riding.
Jimmy Chang yes but in your opinion will they possibly reduce the risk of injury?
@@ken-mb5cp yes.
thanks

Wish I watched this earlier today. Took a nasty nose dive today
Are you still in Seattle? We should organize a group Pint-ride!
Yeah, Jimmy! If you're still around, I'm in too!
Jump bikes are way better than Lime for future reference.
Thanks for the suggestion. Check out my latest Seattle video.
Good advice. How about riding in elevated?
I was waiting for him to talk about that!
@@Bulsie28 it would have been maybe the only opportunity unless he finds an even steeper hill lol.
I just think that If he’s giving uphill tips that would probably have been number one lol
Totally forgot about that. I usually just set my onewheel to the setting that I like best and I don't mess with it ever again. Elevated would have lifted the nose a little bit but I don't like to ride in elevated because of the awkward stance and I feel it is harder to notice pushback when it happens in elevated.
I see, thanks for the clarification! I’ve been curious about elevated mode for a while now and haven’t had any big hills to test it on.
watching this after fracturing my elbow going uphill 😆 lol
part 4 going downhill?
Where in Colorado, I'm in windsor
That's one steep hill, god d*mn
you were riding on elevated mode? or other mode?
Im also wondering this. I notice elevated mode responds with less forward lean for more (climbing) speed
incline mode???
What kind of gloves are you wearing?
Flatland3d fingerless gloves.
@@freshlycharged awesome. thanks! Keep creating these great videos. I just got a pint last month and I love to ride. Your tips have helped me understand the basics.
Seems like it would be faster just walking uphill.
what settings....are you on ???....there is a OW setting for elevations....what your psi ???....did you pay all those good looking people at the top......of the lookout point...hey lights aren't working....just saying
Future motion seriously need to do a refresh. Folks like myself are not getting living in a hilly city + that speed limit. Battery tech has gotten better. I'm sure 30mph is possible with 14mph steep hill climb speeds. Please FM, I want a onewheel but reality is your current boards wouldn't suit my needs
Would the XR work better uphill?
Paul Cormier my XR seems to rip right uphills, I should have pints at my shop in a couple weeks to try out, but so far the xr is awesome
@@asbjonesI can't wait to own a onewheel. I'm saving my pennies. The sport looks awesome! To carve on pavement!! and battery life with miles around city! Im in love

I'd rather walk this and save the battery.
How much do you weight?
this was pre COVID, so I was 160 lbs...
Sorry about being in Seattle
Jesus, yer pint is so clean ...
I've had mine for only 3 weeks and it looks like hell.
I guess that's what I get for being a beginner.
Sad face.
Question, at 3:42 and 3:44 and 3:49, do you see the white battery indicator lights go on on the board? Is it possible you're lifting your heel, just a bit, while carving on the hill? Maybe another reason to explain why people will say their board "disengages with no warning" when they're riding, especially if it's slow enough for the OneWheel to maybe think you're trying to dismount, ending with what seems like a nosedive, but really isn't... Yes, that motor "quiver" can be disconcerting when going up a steep hill! Keep your COG even, and don't lean forward... be prepared for it! Great videos Jimmy, Float On!
Even if you lift your heel, if you are going faster than 1mph the board will not stop or disengage.
Ehh maybe you should purchase a Propel eboard?
