Matt Hoover was nice enough to send me the new version of his ranger mod and his fang minis version 2. The new ranger does a great job of really locking the ego battery onto the board and the new minis are super sleek and just look awesome. In this video I do my best to test out both, I take my onewheel plus for the longest ride yet without charging ( over 20 miles ) to really test out the ranger by putting a huge 7.5ah battery onto it. Then on the end of my ride I take my board with a depleted battery up the steep hill to my house and try to push my board to a nosedive and see if the fang minis will save me!! I also got a little insight from Matt about an upcoming Pint Accessory!

Big thanks as always to my beautiful wife for helping me edit this video!!
Those little wheels in front should be standard in future onewheels, maybe even start adding them to the current ones that they're manufacturing right now.
Yea I can see that for sure. They really help a lot. I can’t wait for them to come out on the pint!
Then it would be a three wheel lol
At this point, I don't understand why future motion doesn't add them. It's almost criminal considering the injuries the nosedives create ; and even from a marketing perspective, the nosedive is the worst point of their product ! I don't get it.
@@6061 Wouldn't be as effective but they could put real "fangs" instead. Titanium maybe, or hardened steel.
Josh Salyers nah fangs don’t do much. My mate had some fang minis that broke on his first nosedive when he was trying to test them.
The Onewheel accessory market is predatory.
The fang wheels is a smart safety feature... I'm too old to be spilling out lol 👍🏿🤓
Oh for sure me too!
For a device at this price I would expect the Onewheel to give some sort of audible warning if the tiltback isn't enough in itself. Kinda scary how it just nosedives like that.
Yea it’s not cool for sure and I totally agree with you
Yep! I’ve been posting the same thing. There is no reason they couldn’t have that feature.
What sort of warning do you need when you ride your skateboard?
@@CJinsoo a skateboard has 4 wheels. It won't simply tilt to one side and throw you off. Electric or not. This is different from any self - balancing unit.
@@Zuflux Try explaining that to anyone who has been thrown off a skate board, seemingly unexpectedly. This is a distinction without a difference because with the skateboard it is user generated input and feedback, or a rock or twig that the user didn’t see. On the the rock or twig, the Pint should take care of that due to the motor and mammoth tire, so the rider on the Pint now has to compensate and expect deviation from the motor, battery, and programming.
Use at your own risk.
Thanks for the review, most helpful I've found yet! Sold on both and will be ordering for my Onewheel +
Awesome!! Thanks!
The safety feature is an add-on should be more like a recall they should all come with that for what this item cost
yea man I really like it, I need it for the Pint!
You dont get gloves or padding when you buy a hockey stick either.
@@MrDmadness your hockey stick won't send yound on concrete at 15mph.
@@JsDentonable your not very good with extrapolation...
@@MrDmadness You are comparing apples to oranges. how is a handheld stick comparable to a transport device? motorcycles and cars and bicycles are constantly upgrading their safety features.
I don't like the position of the battery. it would be better off on the top-middle of the fender.
yea I was worried that putting it too high would rock the board more (I wanted to keep the cg lower) I never tried it up top tho....
That is what I was thinking. It seems that it would be uncomfortable and would interfere with your foot placement.
My new battery model will be tested In the spring and production mid summer, hopefully July. It will offer swappable batterys, but a single pack will double the range. Have production model in auto cad. Form fitted moulds, so no invasive brick on your wheel. First production will be to extend the pint range ( double ) . Plug and play.
@@mikeloki2064 you would then have a dangly wire.. from you to the board, which is shit
@@mikeloki2064 yeah carry a 5 lb battery on your arm for 10+miles and tell me how that feels
I’m a little late to the party. Just bought 2 pint x’s and a gt for my kids and myself. Guessing the ranger won’t be something we will need with the new range, but the fangs look like a must have. I definitely would like the extra battery since I have all ego lawn equipment. Thanks for the content! War Eagle!!
The fang is great I thought of that immediately as soon as I saw the safety concerns it seems so intuitive
Yea for sure!
@@JohnDDyer what site you get that tire? Can you explain pros cons with the treaded tire? Looks nice though.
Exactly, this should have been incorporated into the design from the start. Ever since I saw Adam Savage take a pretty bad nose dive, I was turned off to the one wheel. I thought why don't they have a little wheel in the front so the nose doesn't dig in? Glad some one thought of this?. Now I might reconsider getting one.
Why not put the that battery at the top of the wheel?
🎉thanks, I feel I could buy one some day now that it has fangs!
Those fangs are rad. Cool video man, very informative. Well done sir.
Yea man I was super impressed! Thanks big time!
hahahaha great video man! I appreciate you sharing the experience and insight. The DJ'ing at the end had me cracking up. I will definitely have to pick up some fangs. The nose dive is inevitable. I'm 40 so I don't heal as quickly as I did when I was 20. If these little fangs can save me from getting hurt they're worth their weight in gold!
yea man I totally hear ya, those fangs are awesome for sure!! I dont know why i waited so long to get them!
@@JohnDDyer I'm not sure why I waited so long either. Got them ordered now though!
killer editing on this video! I like the smartphone screen capture overlays.
Thanks man! It takes forever but it’s fun!!
Great video showing how well these mods work. Another difference of the Vampire connection method is that the app shows the % battery level like it does without the EGO. But the OW power button no longer switches both batteries on/off, only the internal.
Thanks Mike! Yea I still think I would rather go down that path than open up the battery. It was pretty tight in that thing!
South Carolina 👍👍👍. Representing Winston Salem, NC . The shot of the fangs working is a strong point too.
Yea man thanks. I was nervous the first time for sure!
The fangs are everything. Genius. Love ❤️ it. Adding the one wheel to the collection now.
awesome man, I love mine for sure
Great Review on the fangs!
Very informative! Will also check those Fangs links.
My heart jumped when you nose-dived and played the haunting music haha
so did mine!
Nice vid I like the fang drag term lol I don't have a 1wheel yet but this really helps to know
Yea man anytime! Time to get one!!
Great vid. War Eagle! I just ordered an XR and I’m looking forward to taking it out to the trails at Chewacla.
awesome Brock! let me know how it goes, I havent ridden back there yet!
ROOOOLLLLL TIDE ROLL!! Haha sorry I had to... Thanks for the great video!
Great vid. Thanks for posting this
Anytime man!
The fangs was my idea at one point. Im glad to see they added them.
Yea they are great! I’m still waiting for the pint ones....
Nice review! I still need to pick myself up a set of Fangs. Actually, looks like they have version 2.1 out now! Didn't know about the battery mod....very cool!
thanks man! you def need some fangs, they are awesome! I just saw your Channel too, I am also waiting for my Skydio 2 but I'm in the second batch :(
Haha, I guess I'm a little late to the party but I just found a new rail trail. Greetings from Charlotte!
I definitely want it body I hope I’m not too late I’m a beginner on onewheel and definitely need a range extended to practice more and learn faster 🙏 btw great video as a newbie I learned a lot thanks bro 👌💪🖖
Hey man any time! Unfortunately it’s already gone... thanks for watching tho!!
Great video bro appreciate it 🤙🏻 ride safe
Thanks man you too!
Fangs and ranger mod for Pint would be sweet, nice video John 🤟
No doubt! I can’t wait for those fangs! I wasn’t a big fan of the way the other options out there looked right now...
@@JohnDDyer sonnywheels has a pint range mod
War Eagle John!! Loved the video!
War Damn baby!
Great video. Very informative.
Thanks Thomas!
Greenville is so nice. Was just there for the Fall For Greenville Fest. Good food. 👍
yea man I am super lucky to live there! its awesome :)
Wow fantastic video bud and that's cool having 2 extra batteries with you incase the board dies on you woow! I wanna do the same one day :D
Yea man it’s def an awesome feature! I am hoping one day future motion makes a board with swappable batteries. Would be awesome for travel, long rides and everything.... one day😃
So wild, watching your video and then you mention Travelers Rest and Greenville and exactly where I live! #FLOATLIFE!!!
I took a ride up to Tandem on the XR. Parked at Welborn street. I put 2 miles riding around downtown before heading that way. When I got to Tandem I had 22% left! Riding up that way is a slight hill that you really don’t notice haha. Charged while eating to about 60% and headed back. Got back with 8%. Feet were numb after 20 miles
Damn man! Yea 20 miles my feet were numb too!
Nice video, man! I could definitely put that ranger mount to good use!
Alright man first comment she’s all yours! Hit me up on Instagram so I can get your shipping details!
@@JohnDDyer Thanks!!! Sent you a dm on insta!
Wde John. Great video, man. Glad I stumbled onto your channel.
thanks man, WDE!!
I have fangs on my corvette. Nice accessory
Dang from Greenville to TR and back that's impressive, I live in Spartanburg deciding if I want a onewheel or not and I definitely think I'll be keeping and eye out for a good deal on one now
yea used can be good too just try to check it out in person to make sure it all looks legit.
I'd love to use that old ranger. I've been thinking of doing the whole thing diy according to their manual, but putting two metal plates (battery commectors) into that plastic housing isn't easy. This would be the ultimate solution. :D
Oh man I think its already got a new home, but I will let you know if it falls through...
@@JohnDDyer Yee I came a bit late to this. As long as it gets used it's cool. :)
I have pint and is excited for the fangs to come out. Ive alread nose dive going up hill and only tore some ligaments. Lucky for me not major.
Oh man I am so sorry, I nosedived too it really sucks... I am still anxiously awaiting the pint fangs too!
greenvilleeee 🤘🏼
good video. dang war eagle fan. maybe the dawgs can win a natty sometime this century. you must be in SC
That’s cool. But also illustrates why I just bought an average EUC. I can already do double his added device distance from stock on my inmotion V10.
I just got the same EUC :)
Awsome video could definetly use the old ranger cheers
Sorry man it’s already at its new home... thanks for watching tho!!
That was a steal for the 7.5ah , where I am it costs $600 for the battery without any accessories
FB marketplace used man (if you have it)! Gotta find someone that the ego mower wasnt enough to cut the whole yard ;)
Speaking of add-ons, I could think of an extra batteries build on the top of the fender forming a seat, then with a handlebar in front, you be riding the legendary ONEWHEEL UNICYCLE!!!
hahhahahahahhahah
Yeah I think it's that tyre. Mine with the Ego 2.5 battery gets 11-12 miles, with the Ego 5.0 I got 19 miles. That on the Vega.
Cool video, i'm just down the road in Asheville NC
On nice! I need to get up there some more. U ever ride with Dom??
This video made so much more comfortable in purchasing one, knowing there's those fangs lol im scared of breaking something
Yea they are an amazing product! Still waiting on them for the pint tho 🙄
Your OneWheel looks like it’s re-entered the Earths atmosphere twice !
hahah yea its been through hell from me and the previous owner lol
Would make more sense to just create a thicker fender with integrated battery cells that is better balanced and less obtrusive. Someone with a 3D printer could mock one up for a production version in under a day
Yea I have seen some diy ones like that. Def makes more sense. This is just a cheap way to use the batteries that many ppl already have. It’s a compromise and just like most compromises...🤷♂️
The fender itself should be the battery
It should come with wheels from the factory. One of my main deterances from getting one is fears that the company will lose a lawsuit do to an injury and go under.
That thing is huge and looks like it makes the back space alot smaller. They should have a groove for your leg/ankle in the battery.
Travelers Rest... man. Talk about some range! Good stuff man! Love that XR dj'ing at the end..lol.. 2 turn tables and a onewheel.
Hahaha thanks Jay, yea my legs were dead when I got back! 🤣
That nose dive anticipation was like a jumpscare in a horror flick. Glad you road it out smooth and safe. Another great video. Thanks for sharing.
And interested in your old ranger. Thanks for the giveaway👍
Man it was super scary for me lol. It looks like the old ranger has already found a home. I will let you know if it falls through tho.
@@JohnDDyer no worries. Yeah, i get my fangs in tomorrow. Just stepped up from Pint to Plus and having a blast. But a little insurance is nice
Thank John, cool video.
Any idea what the cost of the fangs for Pint might be?
I suspect they will be around $50 similar to the ones for the XR/Plus but I honestly don’t know. I’m just ready to try them out!
❤️ Love
when they leave u behind on their boosters just say "hey guys u wanna take a shortcut" when it's a dirt path 😂
Hahah now ur talkin!
For those of you wondering why the company doesn’t add these wheels to future OneWheels.... that’s because by adding the wheels it will admit to a problem they’re not ready to accept yet.
Indeed. And it would be a threewheel 🤣
General HowTo that it is not a true one wheel if it has extra wheels
Threewheel.com was taken already.
or it will make you reliant on tiny wheels not suitable for all surfaces to save you during times where you shouldve jumped off and just catapult you straight into the ground
On one hand, including the wheels takes away some of the choice and trick potential of a Onewheel, forces Onewheel to admit their safety features are sometimes wrong (and that they haven't been able to remedy the problem yet), and isn't a guaranteed fix.
On the other hand... fangs can be kind of cool; if Onewheel supported Land Surf, they kind of help build a little Onewheel Economy and community; they admit that the Onewheel does not always behave as expected and that they are aware and have a solution; and maybe this would open the door for other accessories to be officially supported.
Hell yeah travellers rest
I go to brevard often!
Awesome! It’s a really pretty area for sure!
smart!
that was cute
Yes sirrrrrr.
ahhahahaha :)
The best onewheel accessory by far is the kush hi footpad. Any concave footpad will make a huge difference in your riding, but the kush hi is the best in my opinion.
man sounds awesome, I am topped out on onewheel spending for now lol, maybe next year!!
Just installed the FANG Mini 2.0's myself. Hey, even 1 save makes them well worth the $$. Hopefully, I never have to test them myself...but glad I have them installed. What % would you say your battery was at when you see those nosedive conditions heading uphill? I'm very cautious once I hit 10% battery.
I would be careful below 50% honestly
if the day ever comes that i get a one wheel, im 100% getting those little extra wheels to prevent nose dives. i live in Australia so the tax and price might be higher, but the fact i would be paying over $1000 for the board, doesn't change to pay a little extra for safety first.
100% agree!
Fangs should come standard with any onewheel. I got road rash first day of riding.
agreed.....onewheel needs some help in the safety department
"no more nosedives" hahahaha
9:00 ahego
battery lmao
It’s a big momma 🤣
TLDR: DO NOT HOT SWAP YOUR BATTERIES. IT WILL FRY YOUR BMS AND DAMAGE YOUR BOARD.
So I saw this and wanted to post this for anyone who might watch this video and want to do the same thing! The Land Ranger Kit's are awesome. It uses a method called VnR 'Vamp N Ride. It drains both the OW battery and the EGO battery at the same time. So when one is dead, both are dead. When you plug in a fully charged EGO battery, 'a rush of current will go into the depleted battery and it will affect its health/lifespan. 20% voltage difference between the 2 batteries is okay.' - SonnyWheels FAQ.
The point is, VNR your board. If you want extra range, run the two EGO batteries in parallel on the fender or in a backpack, and use all the batteries at once. When you hot swap, you will end up damaging your board and end up spending quite a lot on replacement parts early.
If you want to hot swap batteries, you need a CnR or PnR (Charge and Ride, Plug and Ride) solution. Instead of tapping into the power lines, you plug an XLR cable into the board and charge on the go. You have to wait until your board is down to at least 80% and you have to switch it off when going down hills to prevent overcharging, and you have to have a hardware version 3206 or earlier to make it work. This makes VnR more appealing, but with the CnR you can ride as long as you have charged batteries, making it a possible solution for ultra-long range riding
yea the rate that the juice rushed to the OW batter I believe is within its specs to handle (I thought I also read this on landsurfs website), buuut I also had a pretty old board with over 3000 miles so i wanst too worried about the battery honestly. its def safer to not hot swap them like I did but it kept riding fine after doing that a few time then later died due to excessive water damage lol
@@JohnDDyer
Always a sad day when a OW gets hit with that splishy splashy.
agreed, this comment should be promoted or similar warning put in the description.
Lmao the borat scene
Hahaha you know it!
Hello just wondering if you still have the battery ranger from land surf?
No it’s long gone. Sorry man...
Man I have a wowgo board and I ride the swamp rabbit pretty frequently. I knew the area looked familiar!
Oh nice! How do you like the wowgo??
@@JohnDDyer love my wowgo. I travel for work and have ridden everywhere from miami to Baltimore. I have put well over 500 mile on the board with no issues. I had never ridden a skateboard in my life until I was stuck somewhere one time with work and couldn't even get an Uber so I started looking online for a cheap ride and found wowgo. My Board gets around 15 miles of range and I have so much more freedom. I've had the board a year now.
@@JohnDDyer so far this year I have ridden Orlando, Charleston, Atlanta, Miami, Jacksonville, st Augustine, Savannah, Huntsville, Houston, Dallas, Cincinnati, Chicago, Baltimore, myrtle beach, Greenville, Columbia and Tampa. It's been a blast! Can't wait for next year!
That’s awesome man, a lot like my story with my boosted V2 ( I got it used on eBay) it was my first skateboard took a bit to learn but after that I took it everywhere too when I travelled to work, not so much in the US though, maybe one day. I got to take it to France, England, Switzerland, Italy, Dubai, Abu Dabhi and Germany, nothing better than these personal electric vehicles for exploring a new place! It’s an awesome way to get around and def turns some heads!🤣
@@JohnDDyer yes sir they're tons of fun but it just sucks you can't fly with it because of the battery. I am director of Logistics with our company so I just throw it on the back of the equipment truck before we head out of town and it's there when we get to the next town lol. I have seriously saved hundreds of dollars in Uber fees.
should retrofit one of these with one of my tools 12.0 Ah milwaukee batterys, that would be funny to see lol.
oh baby! that would be uuuuuuuuuuge! hahahha
I've already done this, its amazing. 2 x 12 ah.. I recommend knowing wire gauges and electrical readings, nothing short of oscilloscope grade before attempting this though, a straight plug in without a charge controller = burned stuff ;) there is no such thing as dead battery... ever.. :) dead legs after lots of rough though, that's a thing .
@@MrDmadness haha nice my 12.0 powers my chopsaw for more than 16 hours worth of cutting so I can only imagine how much 2 would power something like this.
did the ranger bric your xr? just got a bricked pint for free because they did the extra battery mod...i need a new computer/sn# for it since its reading void error
Nope, I never had any issues with the ranger but it was hooked up to my plus. Now extreme rain and me riding my plus in way to wet weather later on bricked it and I donated it to a friend.
Hot swapping batteries though that’s smart
yea baby!
Would you be able to have 2-3 of those adapters, or does the extra battery weight overcome that?
Good Video John. Can you explain the "vampire connection". I looked at the Land-Surf web site and there is no visual difference between the parallel and vampire versions. Instructions are only available for the parallel wiring. Does the vampire edition run into the regular One wheel charging port? Does it work equally well with the V1 and the plus models? I have both.
Well I’m not sure since I haven’t used it, reach out the the guys at land surf they are usually very responsive!
What wrist guards are you using? They look cool
i like the ego mod with the quick charger you only need 25 min till full battery i have one for my mower to bad you dont have any speed mods
I know, I want more speed too... especially for my Pint!
I’ll take ranger mod the old one lol
My guess of why you don’t get expected range is the battery is degraded since it was used when you got it (battery’s lose capacity over time)
I'd definitely want the fangs
Yea I was really impressed by them!
@@JohnDDyer yeah they'd definitely be good for beginners or anyone in general. I know going 15mph+ I don't want to be flung off the board
For sure! I can’t wait for them for the pint!
@@JohnDDyer I still can't decide if I want the xr or the pint
Yea man it’s a tough one. If you have anyone else to ride with, wife , girlfriend, nephew, kids etc. I would recommend starting with a pint and then seeing how many other people love it then get a second pint. Riding on your own is awesome but sharing that float feeling is even better 😃
That looks very much in the way of things. Hate to have a battery rubbed up against my leg that close.
Great video! Can those batteries handle the relatively fast discharge/high amperage?
Thanks Elias, I’m honestly not sure what they are rated for as far as discharge rate, there is a lot of discussions about them on the FB onewheel owners group tho that might be good for you to check out.
I got the ranger kit with the 5.0 battery. It works great . 👍 I out run my friends on there Xr’s all the time
heck yea! what kind of tire are you using??
John D Dyer Burris 6 in with tread At 20 psi
Hi again. I have a little question about the ranger, do you plug it right from the start or do you wait for the board’s battery to drain?. Also, do you know if there are any fangs available for the v1? Thanks again, your videos are amazing!!!!
Hey David! I plug it in from the start since I wired mine into the battery directly in parallel. If I did the charge and ride i would have had to drain it a bit to not overcharge. I dont think any of the fangs work on the V1 :( sorry man, you could reach out to the guys at land surf and see if they have any options tho, they are super nice over there! Thanks for watchin!!
Is the ego battery a back up (existing battery still being used) or replacement essentially ?
is it possible to install two fangs on both end for the pint?
First time seein ya. And, dude, what a GREAT video. 👏👏🤘 To quote Katt Williams, you are “FRIENDLY and inforMATIONAL.” 😄
BOTH mods here should be STANDARD STOCK (at least the Vipers!). Carrying TWO of the bigger batteries is the way to go (one onboard, one in the ruck). Lovin the Hoosier wheel! 🤘
I’m brand new to e-mobility but’ve done a good 6 mos. of research. (Just bought the Qiewa QPower scoot.). Next I’m lookin into THIS bad bitch! ✌️👍
Thanks man. It’s an addicting and fun hobby for sure!!
how much does this setup go for, just the one wheel plus the 7.5ah battery?
do you know if the range extender also works with the pint?
the land surf ranger doesnt, but I think sonny wheels has one that does.
John D Dyer where do I find this sonny wheels guy
War Eagle!
The fang wheels won’t allow you to ride out a high speed nose dive. How do I know? Because I nosedived at high speed with the fangs and got thrown onto the pavement HARD.I’m thinking if you had run higher air pressure at the stock setting of 20psi you’d have gotten better range. I noticed a pretty dramatic improvement going to 22-24 psi with my stock tire.
oh man I am sorry, yea the nosedives are the worst, its always in the back of my mind honestly...
the fangs are dope but I can't imagine putting such a massive addition on a onewheel for a little more range
It's not a little... its 4x
Yea it’s a lot of range. The big battery was 4x. The little one is 2x. Just depends on how important the range is. My favorite ride was just out of my range which really sucked...
It blows my mind that these don’t come with wheels on the front from the factory. That’s just a poor design. I also can’t believe that the rear deck doesn’t have a pressure sensor to sense if you take your rear foot off and stop the thing from teaching you how to do the splits.
All One-Wheelers suffer from PTSD from their First Nosedive. You see it in their riding. Sticking to my Meepo. 1/3 of the Price too!
Esk8 and euc's are the way to go.
yea I have all 3 now, still have a little PTSD from the nosedives but time does help with that for sure...
That Ego battery is an absolute beast. Does it change the OW+ riding dynamics/feel at all?
Yea it does. The smaller battery not so much but you def feel the 7.5ah!
Why One Wheel doesn't install fangs from factory is just insane to me. I've heard 100's of stories of the same nosedive falls.
ranger just boosts the battery by placement of additional battery-it doesn't charge up when riding?
