I remember watching these vids before my XR came in last week and I thought this looked so fun and relaxing. You don't realize how every little bump, lump, and lean in the roadway effects you until you get ON the thing. But the better you get the more fun it gets
Very nice video and narration:) I received my first board today, the pint x. After a couple hours of charging, I’ve just completed my first ever session (about an hour in my basement.) My basement is fairly open and has two poles which I used at first. The app says I went .9 miles with top speed of 5.3 mph. Toe side turns are pretty good; I haven’t completed a full (180) heal side turn yet. Lots of fun, even at 63 yrs old👍 Thanks for all of your great advice!
"Make the ride purposeful" - Mario Contino. What a great quote. I have been trying to express that to fellow skiers for many years. I just got my XR a week ago and your videos have been very helpful. I have a "to practice" list based on many of your videos. Thanks.
I appreciate your comments near the end of the video mentioning how you regretted buying the board for a minute. I had that moment today. Received my onewheel a few days ago, had been having a hard time getting the hang of it, had to bail off of it today after going a little faster than I should have and got wobble. I was like "I'm done". Took a couple hours off, went to the numerous reddit threads that said "bend your knees!". Took their advice and had a blast with it this afternoon. Takes patience. Appreciate your videos.
Great vid, Thank You! I just started riding a few months ago with zero board experience. There's a paved parking lot that's often empty close to where I live. I use the tips of the parking lines like cones to carve/slalom, always trying to carve a little deeper with each pass, stoping at the end of the row, balancing in place for a 5-count, then carving the line tips it in the opposite direction (switch/goofy). There's also direction arrows painted on the lot, 2 of them are about 30' apart, so I ride around them in a figure-8, always trying to cut each turn in a little tighter radius around the arrow than the last, switching regular/goofy each couple laps. And, as you do, I tend to ride the sidewalk to get used to uneven road/sidewalk transitions rather than riding in the smooth road/bike lanes. Helped boost the confidence quickly/immensely.
I’m 55 bought a used onewheel pint and it will be here in a few days. I was thinking it looked easy but have a feeling this video will help me tremendously! I am going to stick with it and expect it to much much harder than I could ever anticipate now. Awesome video Appreciate you taking the time to help us new riders!!
This is exactly what I needed. I’ve gone up driveway bumps a few times, but the one time I tried to rush to get out of the way of a car, the nose went down and I kept going. Thanks for the tips, I’ll get back to practicing!
Your videos are what pushed me over the edge to order an XR! That was a month and a half ago, and 430km. Now I watch your vids, and others like yours instead of snowboarding vids! Keep it up!
I bought my first Onewheel last week and have rode a few times. The first few days, I was just getting used to stopping and dismounting. I want to ride on sidewalks more, but have been hesitant because of the cracks and bumps that you mentioned. This video has been very helpful and I will go out and practice. Thank you!
Really relaxing video to watch, even for those of us who have no issues riding up driveways and cracks. I’m glad you’re making content like this because it’s so easy for us to forget how challenging things can be before you become comfortable with them. Keep up the good work, you might even be helping out the next slydogstroh who doesn’t even know it yet!
I've had my Pint (my first Onewheel) for 2 weeks and just hit 129 miles. I have a background in surfing (but have been landlocked for 12 years) so I went into it kinda' just knowing it wasn't going to be that difficult to learn and, I gotta say, it really wasn't. And, what I enjoy the most, of course, is the carving. But, all of this time I have been riding with my back foot perpendicular to the board. Then, I watched your video and noticed that your back foot is more at angle, so that it matches the front foot. I also noticed you spending more time on the ball of the foot with that back foot. So, I tried that positioning on my ride today and, I gotta say, it was weird at first, but I really like it! It not only changed the carving for me, but I also felt I had more stability when it came to going over bumps and dips in the road. But, the carving is where I REALLY noticed the difference - everything just feels more fluid and I also don't think I ever hit pushback when carving like I was so many times before when my foot was perpendicular. I do feel like perpendicular is the way to go when going off road or on trails (for me, at least), but the angled will definitely be my new go-to! Thanks for sharing!
Great tips for new riders. I'm always working on that last trick. Unfortunately we all fall, so I also think it is important to learn how to fall properly so as to avoid more serious injuries. Also knowing how and when to bail versus trying to maintain or regain control. A couple of falls could have been avoided if I just hopped off the board. Great content. I look forward to the next video.
Thanks. This seriously put a lot into perspective for me. I'd been doing a lot of practicing in my apartment (which has an oddly apt floor plan) and being a bit more intentional with my attempts lead to not just more confidence but efficiency. I've actually made it to my back car port and put onto the street! Thanks again. 🙏🏾🤙🏾✊🏾💓
Thanks again for your videos. I'm a laid-back rider on urban streets, not interested in speed or unimproved trails. I've watched/listened to this video multiple times picking out new elements each time. I am finding though that picking bad streets is helping my riding; road seams, rough patches, heat/pressure ridges that have become essentially speed bumps. Also, on footwear, I'm really liking Sketcher hiking boots loosely laced. The cushion of the sole and the interaction of the sole with the footpad grip tape is comfortable and reassuring for me, I'm a petite 6'-1" 255lbs:)

Like the 4208 was 400 with 650 miles yes sir can do. Anyways I see this guys ride and nobody else I watch lifts their back heel like that. I went out last couple days to try it. Thought it might cause me to crash before watching this. What a difference in the carving and turns with a pace. Hit 15mph which I get is nothing lol but it was at night on an Xr going up and over continuous hills. Love these rides man! Does help watching someone else’s style to go out and try. Love to see it man thanks! Yea yea I get I’m late to the show yall lol 😂 I was always the kid to get your Nintendo from a yard sale with 150 games for 10 bucks and I’m good with that still tbh

Because you were talking while you were riding I was paying absolute attention to your riding and to what you were saying. I remember in a video a while back you said you weren't liking the pint much, I'd love to see a video on how're you feeling about it now and what exact frustrations are with the V1. Great job!
Great video!, I just got my Pint 3 weeks ago and couldn't be happier with it, always finding excuses to take it out. The tip to lean back a little when you go over a raised bump is a must, I learnt to do that early on and it saves me loads!
Best thing I did to get comfortable on my Pint, other that taking it slow and not getting too overconfident, too fast (and even then, I broke a rib hitting an uphill segment too fast, right over the falls, less than 10 seconds after starting the daily ride! Hopped up, finished the ride, it is what it is...) Anyway, best thing I did was take a whole charge trying to go as slow as possible, and turn as tight a radius as possible to heel side and toe side, over and over again. That slow, working to be precise practice translated to a much more comfortable road and trail riding experience. Now I do it for at least half a charge every few weeks. I spent a good chunk of time working to trace the letters of a stop sign painted on my street. Seems kinda stupid, but it really did make me a better and more confident rider. Now, hundreds of miles later, I recognize that day in the first months as a bit of an epiphany...
Happened to me yesterday, 2nd week in with riding , on a dinner run returning home , lip in front of my driveway , neighbors were walking their dog 🐕, saw me ride up , was impressed by my ability to ride till attempting going up small lip front foot came off and fell on my a** , Wish I would have seen this Video sooner ! Great Vid & subbded 👍🏻
I have over 500mi on my Pint now, but I have avoided riding in the yard all summer. In the early days I had no luck learning on turf due to my being a heavier rider. I always seemed to plant the tire into the dirt as I mount the board. Just today, in an attempt to expand my horizons, I tried riding off the edge of a paved street onto my yard but failed due to my Pint digging the leading edge into the turf. Let's say gravity was not my friend. It was a gentle uphill approach with hardly any angle to it to speak of. No bumps to overcome other than the usual turf irregularities. Wonder what I did wrong? I tried to be carrying some moderate speed as I left the pavement. But, something caused my board to dip low enough to snag on the turf. Is it the leaning back that you speak of at 8:30min, though I was not climbing any forward facing step at the time.
2 things! i) LoVe ur repetition on practice emphasizing purpose --> it's fun but w riding purpose comes focus (speaks to mindfulness like when golfing ii) I've been looking at my BRaND.new board for 6 days! --> I would have ToTaLLy put on wrong shoes without your commentary - thanks so much and going to look for ur other vids
I got my Pint a couple days ago and honestly I'm really struggling with it. It's way harder than I thought it would be. I've been skateboarding for 13 years and I feel like that actually hurts my ability to ride a Onewheel. I know it sounds crazy but my legs try to treat the Onewheel like a skateboard. It just doesn't work like that lol I'm going to keep practicing and I know I'll get it eventually. This video actually helped a lot so thank you!
Oh absolutely. It's tough, I was in the same boat. Rode downhill, then got into Boosted boards, and the Onewheel was just awful for me to learn. It took time and a lot of short sessions practicing one tiny thing at a time. It does come though. And funny enough, recently I picked longboarding back up and got an eskate, and the Onewheel broke by body's fundamental understanding of balance. Had to relearn everything all over again.
Nice, thanks for sharing. I like the attitude of making the ride purposeful. I have roughly 500km on my XR and i still struggle with some lips, especially when they go down and cm and then up. So I have to keep trying and trying and trying.
amazing tutorial! thank you, i feel that stoak building. I feel the same way about the pint, it's great for carving and cruising but nothing fast or distant.
Really nice video! Mic audio was great and no wind noise, and the live commentary worked really well. 👍 I think you sounded more relaxed and at ease than your post-commentary vids and more like the "real Mario", like a friend talking to friends and a bit less like the professional Mario voiceover. Great riding tips and a great delivery. There has been a real shortage of riding tips videos lately but you hit the spot. 🤘
@@TheBoardGarage If you have not seen him already, check out MoKashta, he did some really good Onewheel tips videos. His curb nudge tips vid is amazing.
I really appreciate that. It means a lot. I'll be uploading more content soon, within the next week I hope. Had another hiatus due to life getting in the way.
Best video I've seen on the one wheel yet. I just got mine a few days ago and I'm feeling like you did also - why did I buy this?! But I'm persistent and hope to be as comfortable as you are someday soon!
Thanks... 2.5 years from when you filmed, I found this helpful with my new pint! Will try these skills on my next ride (in 10 minutes).... can you tell me about your dismount? I tend to hop off as a beginner but you basically slide to a stop....?
Awesome video I’m 46 Recently acquired a pint Used to skateboard way back in the day when I was 50 pounds lighter Currently 230 pounds. I agree you need to practice daily if I let a couple of days ago I feel like I have to learn all over again. Currently I’m being overly cautious not looking forward to visiting a hospital during COVID days I have all the protective gear. Totally agree that I believe shoes are very important personally in my house wearing socks I feel the most Control. Think It would be a good idea for one wheel to develop a pair hi-top shoes for there boards. Currently living in a hilly area having a lot of trouble starting up hills and riding on grass any advice with that? I have also noticed riding indoors and outside if your speed is slow my board frequently will nose dive Is this because of my weight?
I'm 55, 6'2" and weigh about the same as you. When I first started, seemed like when riding super slow, especially changing direction (to/from goofy/switch), if I stood a little too hard on the nose or tail, it made the board "grunt" a little too hard, so it would shut down, prompting several WTF! outbursts from me. I've got about 80 miles on now, able to ease in and feather those inputs without the sharp hurky-jerky movements, and the pint has got me pretty well trained as far as what it will and won't put up with. Slow speed shutdowns are really rare for me now.
@@makerwright dude! Get an XR if you weight 230ish lbs...the pint is simply not good for that weight! I weigh 222lbs, and I do not enjoy my friend's pint because of this...I mean, I enjoy it, but it's not sufficient. My XR, on the other hand: sooooooooooooo much better, and the range waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better. Last time I rode with my friend, I was holding his hand so I could tow him and his Pinty ass back to my house to charge
One thing to add if you EVER see a sidewalk panel spray painted with a red line brake hard and do not approach that panel. I learned this the hard way yesterday, first ride ever and ended up getting sooo much air and then quickly followed by a lot of ground.
I find my front foot and eventually back foot cramp go numb and hurt like hell after around 5min of riding. I have new skate shoes (adidas busenitz) so they’re not completely broken in…but what you say about the pint being uncomfortable to ride I agree with 100%. I wonder how much of that is the board and how much of that is newness to riding (about 5 weeks of riding as of posting this) Also I live in the country, and learned to ride on a lumpy field. However since then I’ve fell a few times after getting use to pavement when I ride on grass. Could you make a video about riding on grass?
My new Pint is not working on grass - I get overcurrent warnings or a wheel spin message. Anyone else have that issue? Really wanted to learn on grass first.
I'd recommend against learning on grass. The reduced traction leads to slips. The uneven surface, at slow speeds, leads to overcurrent issues. Think of slowly going to a large lip in a sidewalk, and trying to climb it. The board will likely stall and shut off, because you're going to reach the torque output of the motor. If you take that lip faster, you'll pop over it because the forward momentum reduces the torque requirement to roll over the lip. Similarly in grass, low speeds on dips and rises will constantly hit the torque ceiling of the motor. I'd recommend wearing proper safety gear and practice in an empty safe paved area.
I'm 69 in reasonable shape. I'm thinking about getting a one wheel. I used to live on a skate board in my teens and did a lot of slalom sking when I lived on a big lake back in the day. I wonder if that gives me any kind of edge as a beginner? Still haven't bought one yet but seriously thinking about it.
I think riders riding on high psi are a group on its own. I barely see people riding psi's higher then 25. I ride my plus at 29 and I love it. So much feel en direct feedback from the board, never want to go back. The Vega is not ideal as on hard psi carving is harder, but with almost all 3rd party tires hard psi and carving is amazing! Once you are used to high psi low psi feels sluggish and basically like riding your bike with a half flat tire.
I was uncomfortable for about a week on my pint.. 146 mile later I’m still learning the pint and only ride at 12 to 14 mph.. I go up drive ways and sidewalk gully’s strait on. Much easier for me
Nice riding. Great tips. I have about 265 miles on my Pint in a little over a month. Good advice on training every time you ride. Once I started riding off-road, my skills in pavement got better. Would you be kind enough to send your camera setup and if you use an external mic? Thanks!
Sure. This was recorded on a GoPro Hero 8 Black, and the audio was recorded on a Rode Wireless Go, into my phone. Then I just sync it in post so I can get my voice mixed in with the ambient sound.
@@TheBoardGarage thanks for the info Mario. How long is your selfie stick? Watch out for cars down there. I ride a lot in Kingston, just 90 miles north of you.
I have found that the worse case scenario when ridding a one wheel can happen when you are ridding on the beach and there is little ripples on the sand left from the water outgoing natural motion . If you are ridding parallel to the ripples, the board may get wabble (side way motion), if you don't slow down or stop , the motion will intensify , you will get thrown out the boar and you might end up with a broken leg .
Have you gotta a wierd lump on the whisper? I noticed if i use more them 20 psi the tire wont be able to stay in the back down rest position.. And will usually fall on its side.. What is your opinion
@@TheBoardGarage oh gosh. I'm at 5 miles on an XR. I've also got a Segway mini pro, which I use for filming. That was so much easier to gain proficiency.
Do you recommend learning to go forwards and backwards or learning to ride on both sides. I personally ride in the opposite way of you but I can't ride the other way and I find it very hard to go backwards mostly cause im nervous because I can't lean my heel with out nearly flipping the wheel
I’ve been riding my OneWheel for about a week, and this is helpful! I’m still a little nervous about trying to go up my driveway... it kind of has that curve as you go up it for drain water, any tricks for tackling that?
Kyle Obst If it's what I'm thinking of, then it's a little channel for water to flow down to get to the storm drains? If that, then it's really practicing being able to stabilize yourself when the board rotates in different directions. Torsional rotation is hardest to get used to, which is likely what's also happening. I'd say make a visual plan of how the board acts on that area, and then try to anticipate the shifts. With practice you'll be able to control the move without overcompensating. Good luck.
Mario Contino That is what I’m talking about, I have not attempted it yet, I just tried to make the transition from grass to my driveway, and completely flew forward and fell for the first time on concrete LOL
Well grass to concrete is tricky, since grass doesn't have a lot of traction with a slick tire. So if your board has to travel up a lip the traction will drop out as the motor increases torque. So those need a small jump to remove weight from the board. Takes a lot of practice to get the feel for those kinds of terrain changes.
I love that you cover foot-wear first thing. Ditch the athletics and get some skate shoes people! Athletic tennis shoes are horrible shoes to ride in. Need more cushion? Nope, you need to go to Jake Leary youtube page and watch his video about foot placement....if you still want cushion, add it to the foot pads, not your own feet. Proride pads are great for this.
Eyyyy thanks for the shout out! Watching this video right now to prep for my next tutorial vid on the TFL channel. Next one is on going over bumps, coming out next Tuesday

Ty Mario...im from upstate ny but live in Cali...I really enjoy your videos and perspective.
Really helpful video, I'm just starting out got 7 miles under my belt. Thanks for the tips.
Picking up a Pint today. Nice video, great tips, and pretty much exactly how I plan on riding (slow neighborhood cruises).
Happened to me yesterday, 2nd week in with riding , on a dinner run returning home , lip in front of my driveway , neighbors were walking their dog 🐕, saw me ride up , was impressed by my ability to ride till attempting going up small lip front foot came off and fell on my a** ,
Wish I would have seen this Video sooner ! Great Vid & subbded 👍🏻
Very good video. Very informative. Thank you. I am expecting my Pint X to be delivered tomorrow!
Lived in Queens for 10 years. Been in Dallas for over a little over a year now and got my pint about 2 months ago. Your videos make me miss Queens!
Damn I just need to get a pint already thanks for the great tutorial. I'm just gonna do it.
Did you do it?
Great vid... thank you. You are a very good teacher and i like your style. Im on day 2 with my pint. I "subscribed"... plz keep it coming!
Just want to say that this guy is one amazing rider... great skill. Also I love these videos, nice job!
Thank you so much! 🙏
Great video...I also watched your emergency stops vid. Both very helpful for someone getting a onewheel "tomorrow". Subbed.
2 things! i) LoVe ur repetition on practice emphasizing purpose --> it's fun but w riding purpose comes focus (speaks to mindfulness like when golfing
ii) I've been looking at my BRaND.new board for 6 days! --> I would have ToTaLLy put on wrong shoes without your commentary
- thanks so much and going to look for ur other vids
Give it a week. I got mine 5 days ago and first day I felt like that just keep trying
What a fantastic video! This truly helps beginners, like me!
Nice, thanks for sharing. I like the attitude of making the ride purposeful. I have roughly 500km on my XR and i still struggle with some lips, especially when they go down and cm and then up. So I have to keep trying and trying and trying.
been waiting anxiously for this!!!
Finally recognize the streets that you are riding on.
amazing tutorial! thank you, i feel that stoak building. I feel the same way about the pint, it's great for carving and cruising but nothing fast or distant.
Really nice video! Mic audio was great and no wind noise, and the live commentary worked really well. 👍
I think you sounded more relaxed and at ease than your post-commentary vids and more like the "real Mario", like a friend talking to friends and a bit less like the professional Mario voiceover.
Great riding tips and a great delivery. There has been a real shortage of riding tips videos lately but you hit the spot. 🤘
Much appreciated! Thank you. There are more coming, both like this as well as more scripted. Cheers!
@@TheBoardGarage If you have not seen him already, check out MoKashta, he did some really good Onewheel tips videos. His curb nudge tips vid is amazing.
Wiz Rom Indeed I have. A shame he seems to not be doing much content anymore. He seemed a much more skilled rider than I.
You are very quickly becoming my favorite Onewheel channel.. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR CONTENT. PLEASE DO NOT STOP !!! Btw...my name is Mario too:)
I really appreciate that. It means a lot. I'll be uploading more content soon, within the next week I hope. Had another hiatus due to life getting in the way.
Can't get over that beautiful intro.
Thank you sir. 🙏
Boosting ur engagement
Best video I've seen on the one wheel yet. I just got mine a few days ago and I'm feeling like you did also - why did I buy this?! But I'm persistent and hope to be as comfortable as you are someday soon!
Great videos man, very informative for a new rider like me. Thanks for the tips
Thank you. I appreciate you watching! Good luck and stay safe.
I never felt comfortable on my pint or pint x. Finally picked up the xr and it’s way more comfortable to ride.
Thanks... 2.5 years from when you filmed, I found this helpful with my new pint! Will try these skills on my next ride (in 10 minutes).... can you tell me about your dismount? I tend to hop off as a beginner but you basically slide to a stop....?
How do you go up the cubes
Great tips in this video! Thanks!
That was great. Now I want to grab my pint and go!
One thing to add if you EVER see a sidewalk panel spray painted with a red line brake hard and do not approach that panel. I learned this the hard way yesterday, first ride ever and ended up getting sooo much air and then quickly followed by a lot of ground.
Excellent tutorial sir, very helpful!! Thanks very much 😎👍👍🇬🇧
I’ve watched this video so many times
I find my front foot and eventually back foot cramp go numb and hurt like hell after around 5min of riding. I have new skate shoes (adidas busenitz) so they’re not completely broken in…but what you say about the pint being uncomfortable to ride I agree with 100%. I wonder how much of that is the board and how much of that is newness to riding (about 5 weeks of riding as of posting this)
Also I live in the country, and learned to ride on a lumpy field. However since then I’ve fell a few times after getting use to pavement when I ride on grass. Could you make a video about riding on grass?
My Pint arrives tomorrow 😳
Really helpful video, thank you! 👍
Great video Sir. Thank you.
Thanks so much for the help - I will just safety up and go for the pavement.
How did you stop it? I didn't see you lifting the toes, neither did I see simple stop.
Kinda feels like that without experiencing high PSI. There's a pretty noticeable amount of slush in a 20 PSI Vega once you learn to trust the board.
Where can I get a higher psi tire for my pint?
If you are ridding parallel to the ripples, the board may get wabble (side way motion), if you don't slow down or stop , the motion will intensify , you will get thrown out the boar and you might end up with a broken leg .
when you say it's not a comfortable riding experience do you mean in general or only when you go very fast
Have you gotta a wierd lump on the whisper? I noticed if i use more them 20 psi the tire wont be able to stay in the back down rest position.. And will usually fall on its side.. What is your opinion
Yes, they have a weird bump in the center of the profile. If you look at my recent Pint tire review, I talk about and show it.
Teach us how to do that stop you did at almost the end of the video!
I'm a new one wheeler. This is really helpful. I was feeling a little discouraged today. How many miles have you done?
About 300 on the Pint and about 1000 on the XR.
@@TheBoardGarage oh gosh. I'm at 5 miles on an XR. I've also got a Segway mini pro, which I use for filming. That was so much easier to gain proficiency.
Great video!
Do you recommend riding with your dominant foot in front of you or on the back?
When I used to snow ski in my teenage years. We always said if you didn't fall you're not trying hard enough
Your videos are great!
U in queens?
If so, surprisingly quiet area.
Is it bad I hit 24.7 mp on my pint
There is a lot of talk of Tyre pressures, u say 26 psi. May i ask how u worked this out? Thxs mate.
Yo Mario! Love your content man, and video style. Do you have a video where you go over your camera setup?
Not yet, but it's on the list.
Do you recommend learning to go forwards and backwards or learning to ride on both sides.
I personally ride in the opposite way of you but I can't ride the other way and I find it very hard to go backwards mostly cause im nervous because I can't lean my heel with out nearly flipping the wheel
How do you get used to the feeling when the road is uneven and the board dips sharply toe side or heel side, unexpectedly?
Loose ankles
You should do a video on changing the tire
Got one coming up.
Keep it the great content!👍
Kinda interesting how often your back heel comes off the board. I don't think mine ever leaves the board, even when turning.
It's something I originally picked up from Stroh, and it kind of just stuck.
@@JakeLeary You're watching my garbage content? 😳 That's flattering. Hi Jake!
@@TheBoardGarage you’ve got some of the best content out there man. You’re a professional teacher and it shows
idk i ride a pint too the range isn’t great i can do a full charge ride which is close to 9 miles barefoot
What's the max PSI it can handle? In a few other videos I've heard people say 20 is the standard.
My Pint is currently at 26psi. My XR was at 30 but I didn't love it. So that's back at 26psi as well. They can handle a lot.
Hi. Where you rocording over the video or you had a mic when riding? And what mic do you use???
I had a mic when recording this. It was a Rode Wireless Go, going into a phone. Then synced in post.
What's the psi of the wheel?
About 24psi I think.
