Hello Polo [POLO REACTS] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I just posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: www.youtube.com/@gabriel.bardac/community

@@DFFno I just checked the list of concerts from the EFMB tour - Masters Of Rock was really in 2015, I'm correcting now. I relied on the description of the video, where it says 2016 twice.. What a phenomenal band - genius songwriting (thank you Tuomas), top-notch musicianship from the rest of the boys, and then there is the incredible Floor Jansen. Not only is she the greatest female vocalist I have ever heard, she has unbelievable charisma and stage presence. As does the rest of the band, she puts her whole heart and soul into performing.

With all due respect to the unique vocal stylings of Diana Ankudinova, Floor is a master of her instrument. In front of 82,000 fans, she whipped this on them in the 13th song of the 15 song set. Floor might be the revered lead of Nightwish but her solo projects starting in 2019 really highlight her vocal genius. Pay attention to Gabriel Bardac's post for direction to the Nightwish catalog if you wish to sample more, though I'd encourage you to stick with Wacken performances since the sound quality is so superb for a live show. Ever Dream is dynamic ... And shorter. After I exit my bed and change devices I'll amend this post to include a select list of Floor's solo performances.
I don't consider myself a Nightwish fan like the majority of the folks you'll find here. I'm really a fan of Floor's and her solo projects, which, after seeing her solo performances from her appearance on the Dutch tv show Beste' Zangers solidified my fandom of Floor and introduced me to Nightwish. So, to promote Floor I'm going to take the liberty of posting a selected playlist of live performances that I consider the most enjoyable for me from her catalog of solo projects.
    2019 - Beste' Zangers
Solo cover of "Shallow" (Lady Gaga) - ruclips.net/video/M68pe4a_9zk/видео.html

Isn't she wonderful? Our beautiful-est graceful-est kindest majestic-est (I could be here forever, really) Queen of Metal!
This woman is magical, her voice has super powers as you said.
The moment she sings the words "Myyyy Fallll" for the first time you're hooked for life.
She's a role model for many people including me and i'm older than her. As a musician, a human being, friend of the animals and Nature,
wife and mother. Last year she fought the greatest battle and won, she's a cancer survivor. Two weeks after her surgery she was on stage to preform for us all, and that experience was out of this world. We thank her for everything she does for her fans and we love her until the end of times. 💖💖💖💖💖

Floor Jansen is "only" 6 feet tall.
Drummer Jukka Nevalainen is already suffering from insomnia here. Shortly after the recording of the next album started, he had to be replaced by his friend Kai Hahto.

Welcome onboard friend. Just a quicks we background. Floor Jansen ( Yansen ). 16 years old joined the band Afterforever, then Revamp and side project Northward, and Nightwish. Supported many bands including apperances to groups like Epica, Ayreon, and many more. Performed many songs on the Dutch show the Beste Zangers ( Best Singers ) made many great cover songs and her own solo album too including her Amsterdam concert. She can sing opera and metal and Christmas carols as well and in multiple languages like spanish, Italian, German, English, Dutch, Sweedish and much more. Her best superpower is being a very kind humble person. Who even sung a song to help War torn children. Her Genre can be anything she sets her mind too. Ive heard her sing Country, Rock, Metal, Opera, Folk, Pop music just waiting for Rap and R&B and reggae and Punk then i think shed done it. Oh and she has litteraly sung the phone book on youtube worth a look.

This performance was my introduction to Floor and Nightwish, and I was entranced from the opening drum hits. Then Floor strides out and just assumes command of 82,000 people, showing an amazing personality - a stage presence matched only by Freddie Mercury. And that voice! It's a combination of natural talent, great physical assets (6'1" and 180, the lungs of a racehorse, and her dentist can inspect her molars from the tenth row), and a vast amount of training and hard work.
Count me among the old rockers who've been listening for decades, but have never heard another singer remotely as good, or a band remotely as good. The fan base includes kids, their parents, and their grandparents ... how many bands can make that claim?

I am late to the game with Nightwish only having listened to them maybe for about 4 years now. The talent, theatricality, showmanship, song quality, etc. is unsurpassed in this genre. Floor is a goddess and you are right she has superpowers in her throat. At once the voice of an angel and also of a Valkyrie. A great band with a deep, loyal, knowledgeable, dedicated following. Keep working on your poker face.😊

@POLO REACTS: Hey bro! Given you say you like powerful vocalists, I've got not one, not two, but _four_ singers for you to react to!
    1) Iron Maiden, Hallowed Be Thy Name, live in 1982. This was the first performance of Bruce "Air Raid Siren" Dickinson as Iron Maiden's lead singer. And at 68 years old, he has not only beaten throat cancer, but he's still performing!
    2) Unleash the Archers, Abyss. Led by frontwoman Brittney Slayes, Unleash the Archers won the Juno Award (Canadian Grammy) for Abyss, Canada's 2020 Metal Album of the Year. They hail from Vancouver, BC, Canada. And to give you an idea of how powerful the voice of Brittney Slayes is, it's like Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford (Judas Priest) had a daughter and taught her to sing metal.
    3) Bloodywood, Aaj. Hailing from New Delhi, India, Bloodywood is an Indian folk metal band that combines Nu-Metal, electronica, and rap lyrics. "Aaj" (pronounced "aah-j") is a Hindi word meaning "today."
    4) Sabaton, Christmas Truce. Sabaton is a power metal band from Sweden that sings about military history. This particular song is about the Christmas Truce of World War I, in 1914.

"...give you chills.."? Goosebumps? Yeah, every time I hear Floor . :)
@9:05 "..expecting a face-melter.." I've heard several professional guitar players praise Emppu for this, saying he plays exactly what the song needs, no more, no less, & doesn't sacrifice the song for his own "Look at me!" moment.
He IS capable of that, as you'll see, if you continue to watch their stuff. ;)
(Fyi, Tuomas , the keyboard player writes almost all of their songs, but Emppu writes most of the guitar parts. )

Expect the unexpected with this group. I suggest watching a range of their songs, particularly from this concert but also performances with their original lead singer Tarja.
I don't know if this song has ever been used as a film score, but they have done film scores in the past (and also one film).
Floor isn't seven foot, unless she's grown since the last time I looked, but she is extremely tall - 6'4", I believe, though I could be wrong.

Switch-ups is what Nightwish is famous for. All songs are completely different. No fillers. Emppu (guitar) plays exactly what the song calls for and he can shred when needed. Floor sings all genres including growls. You were close on her height. You only missed it by one foot. 😉🤘

  • @vogel2280
    @vogel2280 Год назад

As others stated. This is Symphonic Metal. And YES, in general symphonic metal is Progressive music.
The thing that makes music progressive is an element called *'reprise'* , a piece of the music that recurs later in the song, but with a twist. For instance it can move from singing to guitar, it changes from minor to major and/or moves from a dissonant end-cord (no resolution) to a consonant end-cord (resolution). Resolution in music directly ties into emotions in the brain.
In the typical hit-machine-radio-music-generator all verses, refrains and solo's end with resolution.

Originally Floor was sent by Allfather Odhinn to Midgard to gather the souls of fallen warriors to Valhalla, but she
got distracted and joined a series of bands. However, Floor still gathers souls by her grace, beauty and the sheer power
    of her vocals.
We give thanks for her at our Blots regularly and hope that Odhinn won't notice that she has never returned to Asgard.
