Do you like the Ora Funk Cat’s name?? 👇
No! Naff name!
Infantile 👎
The name is terrible, so dated. I would find it embarrassing to have to tell people what it’s called. But apparently the 80’s Motown thing lives on in somebodies marketing dept.
What were they thinking ?..maybe it translates better in China. I'll stick with my MG4 order thanks..
No I couldn't buy it with that name
Finally a proper review instead of (Late Brake Show and Fully Charged I'm looking at you) somebody cooing over the silly logo and the blue dashboard and ignoring more fundamental weaknesses. Actually the one thing I like about this is the colours - I'm sick of cars that are grey on the outside and black on the inside. I'm surprised they don't have black and white monitors for their infotainment too. So I'm sure version 2 of this will be a real contender.
Well said. The fully charged show is directly sponsored by state Chinese EV companies. They use to disclose this but have not seen this recently.
I thought that the Fully Charged Show review was a bit silly. He loved the LED lights on the rear window when pressing the key button, I have a proximity key on my Nissan Note and just open the door with no rummaging around in my handbag. Matt Watson from CarWow thinks that it will have a range of 133 miles on the motorway and that is not good
I agree with you about car colours as well, when I bought my Note, the choice was red, blue and umpteen monochrome colours from white to black. My preferred car colour is dark metallic green and I had to go for red.
School Report: "needs to do better" - the car that is, not you DR.
Has a lot of showroom appeal, and for some, that will clinch it. I’m waiting for the softer riding version though, the Kumfy Cat.
Loads of reviews of this car around. This seems the best. Others seem trivial - designed to entertain rather than inform, and some miss out important stuff that's mentioned here.
As others have suggested, interesting that others were far less honest/brutal on the ride quality. Issues like the indicator are somehow both trivial and hugely significant simultaneously! Think they'll be plenty of Fiat 500/Mini folk who ignore the range, value, etc because of the appealing style. But difficult to look past the MG4.
The Ora proves an important things about new Chinese car makers: cars are not just the sum of their parts. Established brands know that there is more to it. Things like ride tuning for instance. At the moment these cars are just good looking spec sheets. It takes much more to be a good car...
But that's generally been the Chinese way. They copied the Mini, making it look quite similar-ish to the original. And the best of it is, they seem to feel it's enough to make it *look* the same, and it then must be as good. They just don't "get" that many Mini's are bought for the heritage angle. They also closely copied the Range Rover Evoque, calling their version the Land Wind. A court case resulted, with the inevitable verdict coming down in favour of the Chinese. I have since seen a road test of this RR Evoque copy, and it was frankly atrocious. Rough basic non turbo 4 cylinder engine, shoddily finished interior, awful ride and handling, but it *looked* the part from the outside......and it cost around a 3rd of the price of the genuine Evoque. It probably wouldn't be too long before your Land Wind became Broken Wind.......
@@Brian-om2hh Your description is at least 10 years off. Yes, you are right, there had been copies of Mini and Evoque, and, say, the Honda CRV, some models from Toyota that I can't remeber the names to, and of course the Porsche Cayenne. Anyway, the list is long. However, none of the copies has succeeded in becoming the hot top sales in the Chinese market, heck, not even close. At least two of the car makers which are notrious for cosmetic copying have gone bankrupt. You really don't get to see a lot of those "copies" in China. Google the Chinese car sales statistics if you want.
This car is kind of a miss now that the MG4 is out
And the Smart #1
Great review. I love the look of this car but it is definitely off my list after this review. Well done. Lotus used to offer a service to other car manufacturers to sort out handling. Sounds like they could do a job here.
When did the lead singer of Coldplay become a car reviewer?
Wow, an actual honest review not beholden to the company which supplied the car to the reviewer! Well done!
The one major item that all reviewers miss is total cost of ownership rather than initial purchase price. This has become particularly important when evaluating cheap Chinese EVs against higher quality more expensive EVs due to the shockingly high depreciation for these vehicles
Great review!
This particular brand may not hold it's value too well, but better known and proven EV's certainly do..... I saw a 5 year old 17 reg Hyundai Ioniq electric (the orginial version) with 90k miles on the clock, sell for £15k in just a few days.
Nice to see a fairly honest review.
It's supposed to be coming to Australia sometime also, no idea when but GWM are well established here.
£32k for a tiny boot, rubbish handling, cheap & nasty finish. Wow... Where do I sign up... 🤔😂🤣. Clearly beaten by a long long way, by the MG4 or MG5.
It’s a bit expensive for what it is. If they offered for 22k then not bad but too expensive for an unknown car brand in uk
Very popular in Asia but the price in UK is almost double. 😅
Just use the very good voice control for hesting, its actually way better than most cars in this
They could be pushing the limits at the price they're asking. It may not be too long before we begin to see good clean 12 to 18 month old examples of the eNiro, Soul, and Hyundai Kona come to the market at this price. All solid, proven EV's. One of those would be my choice over this unknown and unproven brand. What might the service and spares situation be like? That's just it. Nobody knows......
An unknown (in the uk) brand, small battery, slow charging and costs around the same as " brand" EV's with similar toys and larger range = a chuffing hard sell
Needs to be top of the crop in something.
Only a £6k price drop will help ora shift numbers.
It sells for 15K in China, ergo the selling numbers -why oh why everything is more expensive in the UK?
@@firstnamelastname9631 It's the greed of the automotive trade and everyone who has a finger in the pie, once it arrives in the UK. I used to use the customs tariff and on checking, it's 10% duty and 20% Vat on electric vehicles, so on £15000 in China, plus shipping costs to the UK (maybe 5% of Chinese value) you can get a rough estimate. It won't be anywhere near £31k!
@@andycotton162 Even UK produce is cheaper abroad.
I was recently in Peru and bought a bottle of scottish whisky in a supermarket, the price was almost 30% cheaper than in a London supermarket -that's including transport and the top rate 'luxury product' tax.
really cool review :)
That’s a $25000 at best
If the bigger battery version was available for £30k then maybe they’d have a chance but this version for £32k? I don’t think so. This will get marginalised by better and cheaper cars very quickly.
And hopefully the price will come down.
Always love your honest reviews!
That indicator stalk would make me hate it. I could not live with that.
Honest review from this fellow as usual. Why is anyone buying this Chinese rubbish.
So all the old jokes about BMW indicating were down to the stalk and not the driver! 😂
So sick of other RUclipsrs reviewing EV’s supplied by the manufacturers and giving glowing reports. Of course they do, otherwise they won’t get any more cars to ‘test’
I don’t watch them anymore.
Same with the lousy Chinese motorcycles.
Thanks for not sucking up to the manufacturer and telling us how it is.
its bland, a sought of suzuki swiftish style fron early 2000s , the nameing is almost a cartoon type . these will be a rare sight on our uk roads , at £32, 000. with a miniscule boot
without to many bells and whistles , the home mkt retail this between 12 /13 grand , just sayin.
A prime example of form over function.......
Alfa Romeo is still good looking car!
Actually coming from a 500e and trying out a MG4 the build of the interior is far far superior, the 500e has cheap plastic everywhere, the mg4 that has one of the cheapest feeling and looking interiors going
Honest review. Refreshing!
1950s American interior colour scheme. Looks cheap and nasty . By the sound of it dreadful to drive, but at least you won't get far before you have to stop and charge it.
What a little beauty! Love that colour too. The review seems a bit "carping" - missing the big picture. It's so much better than the alternative ugly-bugs.
Cold elk 39
Looking nice, but seems it will date quickly. Shame that drive seems below par. Not great value.
U were the only reviewer who constantly criticised this car
Never trust what a car reviewer says who drives loads and loads of different cars. Better to get reciews from actual owners
Evs have become like buying washing machines which also have an electric motor and are usually white! It's seem to be based on price and specs and not pedigree, reputation, build quality, emotion etc. That's why unknown new entrants from China costing 30k + are being recommended. Would never have happened with a combustion car.
EVs are like washing machines, microwaves or many other machine.
Looks good but needs work to sort out the handling
Umm? More like “ Clunky Rat!” Much better options of EVs at that budget point.
Ha Ha. I cannot think of anything to commend it either. Even the name and styling are suspect in my view.
Maybe if it was a couple of £k lower than the MG4? Actually it still would be a no from me.
@@davidlang3625 i'm not a fan of the styling either. It's too much like the Nissan Leaf Mk 1's Miss Marple styling.
This is the harshest review of Ora Cat, among all English and Chinese reviews.
Not really - a few out there now saying the same thing - too expensive for what it is with low range and slow charging. It’s going to date really quickly I’m afraid.
He went too far
Not really. He has just pointed out things other reviewers oversaw but the conclusion are similar. It is an overpriced looks over function toy.
How can a small Chinese company make a better looking interior than Volkswagen?
They not a small company 😂
It looks good but maybe too many negatives
The biggest difference between the Good Cat and the Funky Cat IS THE PRICE. In China £12,000 UK £31,000 RIPOFF BRITIN AT ITA BEST
I'd be very concerned about the facial recognition tech. I don't have a problem with it as a concept and I'd be happy with its implementation in other vehicles. But let's not pretend there isn't a very dark side to facial recognition in this car's country of origin.
so product from other origin with facial recognition is not dark at all? better check the phone that you use to send this comment where it made from lol, you more then welcome to live like a caveman as no one force you to buy it
@@jamesli2040 您真可爱。
@@egregs can say the same to you
@@jamesli2040 and you know fully well the difference between where something is made and the ownership structure of the company making it. 晚安。
@@egregs know that so well and that's why I find your logic funny, 小聪明
It does look cool, perhaps better than the MG4 in some things but unfortunately, the MG brand, even not being owned by the same people, takes a role in people decisions. This brand is really not known in Europe, so it's gonna take longer for them to build that up.
I bought a cheap watch once. You know what I got? A cheap watch.
What were you expecting to get? The link between quality and price is much different in other countries.
I believe at the end of the day, people will probably buy MG4 over this funky not practical but also expensive cat 😅. The range and the price are 2 important factors in EV’s world.
Sorry but disagree range is a consideration and then can be important - average person does no more than 10,000 miles per year that’s around 32-41 miles on 7 or 5 day driving week. This car for an average driver will be perfectly fine - What car seem to think everyone is regularly doing 200 mile trips and keeps pushing this agenda.
@@Dreador. you are right about the average but what if you need to go on a trip? A large portion of people upgrade their old cars to new ones just for being safer in an accident which may never happen to them. The range has a similar concept. Although you may go on a trip once or twice a year, you choose a car which can take you there more easily. The look is good, no arguments there, but it is not practical. Let’s compare it with MG4:
MG4 is RWD which can offer better handling in theory, it has 7 years guarantee, better range and bigger boot space for 7 grands less.
Of course you can buy the trophy model which has similar price and offers 280 miles and faster recharging speed.
Do not forget that Mazda (which is more reliable and known brand) has the same theory and even offers a gas car once or twice a year for going on road trips, but they could not sell very good. People often buy new cars to enjoy on road trips.
Don’t get me wrong, I really wanted to like this car, I like the design, but I believe for a new car brand, specifically in a market which most of their competitors are good, they needed to offer something unique which they failed in my opinion. Tesla has the range, VW has the brand name and German quality, even Kia and Hyundai offers a lot. Buying an unknown car brand which has little support is quite risky, they needed something which motivates customers to buy, and I don’t find anything about them to address that motivation.
In China, they offer a really good and competitive price, but In Britain, they rose the price a lot while do not have the brand recognition and the needed features in comparison to the other major players. I believe the car would be a total failure, of course the time will shows I am right or wrong.
@@Dreador. the average miles per day is meaningless. You need to consider how your EV copes with events like Xmas holidays, with long journeys to see distant family, car loaded up with stuff/passengers, cold weather, lights and heater on, everyone trying to use charging points at once...fun? I don't think so. People say, oh just hire a ICE car for those occasions, but have you seen car hire prices nowadays?
@@piglet5287 Exactly. I believe who ever owned a car would agree that the range is one of the most important factors to choose an EV.
Who wants to be nervous about finding the next charging station just after 190miles (Although I am pretty sure, It would be roughly about 150 miles 😅)
@@Dreador. You'll have to charge it more often and it will also take longer. Not optimal in a city enviroment where in home charging is not an option.
"Expensive."
This article breaches the IPSO Code of Practice and the Trademarks Act 1994 by repeatedly showing and speaking about ORA as a sub-brand of Great Wall Motors (GWM).
In fact, GWM is repeatedly infringing the trademark of the trademark owner, OR&A Ltd (& ORA Ltd.) who have owned this trademark and used it continuously since it was first registered in 2012, (Registered Trademark UK00002609800).
To clarify ... the trademark ORA™ does NOT belong to GWM and they are breaking the law by using it.
Great Wall Motors (GWM) did apply for the same trademark in 2021, but the application was opposed and therefore not granted, (UK00003662470). They have however, continued to use the trademark on their vehicle, in breach of the above legislation.
The IPSO Code of Practice is quite clear what actions the publishers of this article should take. I await their (prompt) response before referring them directly to IPSO.
You shouldn't be touching anything on the display while driving!!!
Nowadays while driving you can play as much as you like with a tablet (car display?) but you touch your phone and you are dead meat.
@@firstnamelastname9631 actually the law is about a communication device and not a touch screen. You cannot touch a tablet or phone if it has a sim card as the problem about distraction with talking. It is a little odd about hands free, but the law is about touching a device with a sim.
The electric car con...Going green off the backs of those poor soles living on gulag wages in one of the most polluting countries in the world.. Just super...
Poor soles?
It just looks really weird (with an even weirder name). Like its designed by a non-car person. And like any china-made car, the CO2 footprint (production) makes it contraproductive climate-wise.
Way overpriced and awful range but at least it has design
This review is the polar opposite of the review from Fully Charged?
Fully Charged is motivated by a pro EV ideology. What Car is more pragmatic
Agree. Roberts review was very entertaining as usual, but after watching other reviewers... it was very sympathetic to say the least.
I thinks Doug Revolta's is the most comprehensive/balanced of the ones I've seen.
Let's face it we all love Robert L for his entertainment value & inimitable style but, is he a seasoned motoring journalist who reviews all types of vehicles, big small, ICE, EV with a balanced viewpoint? No. Fully Charged only reviews EV's & anything else electrical & have a pro EV agenda so they are not going to rock the boat too much when it comes reviewing new EV's. It's interesting to see & hear other peoples reviews & take on new cars but I have to trust my own judgement which in the case of the Funky Cat is in the "not on your life" category. Amongst its other short comings it's simply too expensive for what it is & has a daft name. If the Funky Cat was selling in the UK for the same price as in China it may have a chance of selling a few units to the fashion victim brigade but even then only in relatively small numbers.
Get back funky cat.
Elton John's lawyers are on the case🐈
K
Very interesting watched the late brake show and autotrader review of this car which I recommend people to as you will see in this review it’s overall negative when the other 2 are positive and Explains in more detail the safety features .
Naff Name “ Funky” that removes Customers in the U.K. who are over 50 and the range on this intro model is lousy. Will buy the better range model when it comes into the U.K. BUT only if the Funky Crap is removed plus no choice of models and why is the Car more expensive in the U.K.- we were advised £28k as well?
Not at £32,000 it’s not.
MG4 is better
Range, ride and handling are all better in the MG4. Not forgetting the price. This base funky cat is the same as the top spec Trophy MG4.
Good to have choices.
@@CastleKnight7 Yes. What truly matters the most wins for the MG4 but the interior/infotainment on the Ora is definitely way way better.
Elle est super mignone.
Whatcat?
Mini, SLK, micra love child?
This review contradicts most other reviewers in terms of handling and he can’t use indicators properly. Maybe he should stick to making music with Coldplay.
£22,999 and you ll be laughing.
£22,999 and I'd be hot footing it to an MG dealer in search of an ex demo MG4 or 5...... Not very long ago I watched a RUclips video of someone who'd been using an MG5 for business use. It had covered 40k miles in around a year, with no problems.....
Kind savior 31
Overpriced chinese rubbish and no spare wheel.
I’ve seen a several reviews on this car and this is by far the most negative. Others have mentioned how good the ride is,and yet this one says it’s really poor. All driving uk roads, so who is correct?
Funky Crap!
...and if your social credit score is low the facial recognition system will turn the car off.
If your western supremacist/racist indoctrination is high enough, you will make bigoted comments on ytube.
As will the Chinese Govt in the event of any conflict..
Is it so hard a thing to do to throw a piece of rag on that camera?
Just too many adverts. Have unsubscribed!
Sorry it's so ugly and looks dated already.
Like the Mk 1 Nissan Leaf, this won't age well. It looks oldi woldy from certain angles now...... In complete contrast to the MG4, which looks current, and stylishly edgy......
Your right there Brian. Don't know what the designer's are thinking. But wasn't building a iconic classic good looking vehicle. 🙄
This is unfortunately Chinese car, that looks like Chinese car, China however can produce a nice and futuristic cars, desirable for Europe, prove of which is e.g. awesome NIO ET5.
MG4 is better...
