GWM Ora electric car 2023 review: The MG4 EV's new rival - but is Great Wall's Funky Cat a Good Cat?

- GWM already counts Haval amongst its sub-brands, but now it's added Ora, which specialises in electric cars. And what better way to launch it than with an eponymous small hatchback? That's right; this is the 2023 GWM Ora.
Known in other markets as the GWM Funky Cat or Good Cat, the Ora arrives in Australia with a 'slightly' more sensible name and big ambitions, as it's now positioned itself as one of the cheapest EVs money can buy. After all, it's among the first models in its traditionally humble segment to offer a battery-electric powertrain.
In this expert review, Contributing Journalist Dave Morley attends the Ora's local media launch to see if it has what it takes to establish dominance against the soon-to-be-launched MG4 EV as well as more established rivals like the Toyota Corolla Hybrid, Hyundai i30 and Kia Cerato. His verdict may surprise you...

Whoah. Used to love reading Dave's Motor articles when I was a kid (quite a number of years ago). Good to see you here mate. Defo rocking the beard goals. Great review.
Considering getting one, and if I do, I really hope it still has "Good Cat" badge on the back of it still. If it doesn't then I would get one made and put it on it myself.
the looks of this car ( funky retro futuristic )has me floored.
That's a nice interior! Now I have to fight the wife on any alternatives...
GWM have really addressed the customers needs
I hope their Punk Cat will come as well
probably not ,the gwm didnt even bother to release it in CHINA😂, due to the failure of ballet cat. but from what i heard they will release two porsche style suv😅
Are you sure there is no reach adjustment on the wheel. We have reach in nz
Very good presentation.
Can you confirm if it charges on Tritium DC fast chargers?
I don’t know what version you reviewed, but other reviewers and the specs say it IS reach adjustable….
The front looks like a shed built 911 model 3 cross.
Find me a cheaper ev with this level of specification.
Looks good but expensive and range to short
Just to confirm, no reach steering wheel?! Both reach and tilt in the 🇬🇧 rhd.
Love the color
Reminds me of a Nissan pulsar on the side profile
This car will sell like hot cakes. Every wealthy family will want one as a second car for city runs.
I do not understand the performance as in China the non-GT get a 105kw motor, while only the GT gets the 126kw performance motor, so if all models get the same 126kw motor how will the GT be faster? Even in Thailand which is a RHD market gets the 48kwh model and 63kwh and both those get the 105kw while only the GT gets the full performance motor. So until they actually get here I will take the specs with a grain of salt!
GT is not about performance, it's just more "things". Wheels, selfparking, heated steering wheel etc. Disappointing
@Brian Jensen Wrong, go look at the Chinese website, the GT clearly says 0-100kph in 6.9 seconds and it even has launch control. Only the GT model in China gets the 126kw motor. So if all the models in Western markets get the 126kw motor then the 0-100km would be 6.9 seconds and not the 8.5 seconds which is the performance of the non GT models
More than a touch of Porsche look about that front I suspect !
can't blame the designer: an ex Porsche designer (already forgot the name).
Safest small car (ICE or EV) ever tested in Europe NCAP.
Its cross between vw beetle and mini
Funky Cat sounds cool. But, I'm not and EV kinds bloke.....but I like Funky Cat.
I have to admit I’m a sucker to the look of the car but I don’t think it’s that cheap to make people switch. They have to to better.
Canberra is set to ban the sale of Petrol vehicles in the coming years (apparently).
We’ll probably be forced into buying them.
They are half the price in China. Import taxes and what not drive up the price
Agreed, was hoping it would be $30k or under, Australia needs to do better on providing incentives to new buyers of EV
Looks like an ev made for the 80s/90s with the interior, looks like a 80s fridge 😅
Car wow video shows steering wheel does have reach!
this is the styliest lil car Ive seen being built in a long time. Most cars today all have the same boring lines. This looks like its from the day when car designers were actually artists
I came across a shaft in a remote location in the side of a hill, it was all overgrown with bushes. Can’t find any records on tengraph.
The previous leaseholder had no knowledge of it.
I am curious to go back but it’s gone live now.
I guess I will never know🤣
ORA CAT is not cheap in the UK. Australia probably a lot cheaper.
Guess who got the Stupid Funky Cat name, small battery & £32k price tag - the UK. It's got a tiny boot as well. The interior is good (MG could learn something from this) but no heated seats or steering wheel in UK spec!! No rear wiper or sunroof option either!! According to UK testers the ride quality is not great & as yet there are only 2 dealers where you can see it or take a test drive in the whole of the UK mainland. As a result this car will not sell well in the UK.
The Chinese companies just cannot stop copying other brands can they?
too expensive!
Ora Ballet Cat
35k will be a reasonable price
Too expensive.
Cold money 17
Disagree with you on the name. They should call it the Good Cat here as well. A welcome bit of whimsy since everyone knows what its called overseas anyway.
Po Xia 9.11
Over $40k?. Too overpriced. I go back to petrol cars.
haha why would anyone buy Kia over Chinese car?
At least if you die in a car crash with this car they can bury the whole care as it’s the same size as a coffin ⚰️
The fact that's it's an EV, made in China and cheap (if you could call $43,990 cheap) are three reasons to keep clear of it. It's the perfect combination of trouble all in one package.
I think you'll have to pay the prejudice tax then. Just like people did when the Japanese and Korean first showed up. Realistically EVs will be almost all Tesla or Chinese brands going forward.
@@markuc I'd rather pay the prejudice tax as it'll more than likely be cheaper in the long term than the cost of batteries and other electronic components that are likely to go wrong with the Chinese made EV. They can barely manufacture a durable IC engine car, but they sure do make lots of promises about their warranties...like 7 years and 200,000 km. The problem is you won't know it's a heap of junk until things start going wrong around 60,000km then if it does you're stuck with a car that's got a bad reputation and will be difficult to sell or you'll have to sell it for next to nothing to get rid of it. Sure the Chinese will make good cars one day but it's just that it's not today
@@jamessmyth5949 dig a little deeper, you might be surprised how advanced Chinese EVs are now.
It seems to be you are still living in early 90's LoL.
@@nerrixj.l.6102 No actually I'm not, I live in reality and don't get sucked in by hype and not so clever marketing.
I think it's expensive, kia picanto $20,000 or kia stonic $30,000
No thanks
I think a Tesla is the better option based on this GWM especially since the top spec is over $50k ! Resale value on this ? 🤷♂️too expensive for a Chinese manufacturer
If this was say $29,990 up to $39,990 for a top spec but not at over 50k
The full EV Fiat 500 is a much better looking car than this.
Lol 😂 Junk
