Jazz as a spiritual instrument? Absolutely. This group actually changed the consciousness of the entire planet. Many a low vibratory entity was eliminated through this higher consciousness evoking band. That's the purpose of jazz in its entirety.
Everybody keeps on raving about Jaco and Erskine, but these guys had a completely different groove down. The early Erskine was simply out-classed by Pastorius (with a few exceptions) but Chester and Al were on that same high level. And look at the size of Chester's cymbals and hi-hat. Some noise.....
Amazing rhythm section, Alphonso Johnson and Chester Thompson. Mr. Thompson would eventually find his way to Phil Collins and Genesis. Wonderful to hear a live version of Mysterious Traveller!
Alphonso paved the way for Jaco to fit in to the vibe of Weather Report which was more of a progressive approach than Miroslav Vitous had envisioned. Alphonso was my favorite bassist from his work with George Duke- I liked that fuzz sound that he used occasionally.
weather report, mysterious traveler, frog and night gown, Raleigh underground, 1975 OMG!!!! I feel sooo lucky and honored that I saw this band and was so close......it was a mystical experience
If anyone sees this comment and can help me out with understanding how Alphonso Johnson got such an amazing bass tone here, I would like to achieve something on this level.
Alphonso Johnson is actually my preferred Bassist in Weather Report.
Alphonso is a unheralded Master !!!
Much as I like Jaco, there is not enough pre-Jaco WR on RUclips, so this is brilliant.
