It was in the late 50s or early 60s when I met Joe first in Innsbruck when he played with Fatty George, I was a child and he bought me some ice cream, that's why I remember that afternoon. Years later we met again in Munich when he was touring with Weather Report and he introduced me to Wayne and Jaco. Then I met him every year until his death. I really miss him.
I saw Zawinul at the old Catalina Bar & Grill on Cahuenga in Los Angeles 97 and then in 2005 when his band was named the Zawinul Syndicate at the Detroit International Jazz Festival....man he could go....absolute genius.
Joe Zawinul is the Master Innovator of Fusion Jazz. He will not, and cannot be duplicated. Copied?, yes, but the mold has been broken. ONE OF A KIND. You're gone, but your legacy lives on!!! Thank you for the memories!!!!! Peace and Love,
Saw this in 1983 at the Greek Theater in L.A. Mahavishnu Orchestra opened up for them. What an amazing night. A highlight of my 40 years of going to shows.
not seen this before thanks Top Video amazing picture quality 1986 great beautiful full sound No other Band like Weather Report they paved the way for many ,with Guitar a real gem this all and out 100% Master Class Concert
Only 1 zawinul ever as he's the musicians n front of him and the ones behind him he definitely had his own sound and own music a genius like miles.pastorios.blakey and many many others thank u ZAWINUL
I was privileged to work with this band I took 3 pairs of congas for Bobby Thomas Jnr to try and Joe Zawinul walked onto the stage and said what are you doing and BTJ said I need to try them out Zawinul said"..I thought you said you could play, if you can play you can play on cardboard boxes. ..true story
there will never be a duplicate of Joe Zawinul.A master of swing .bebop and fusion.early years of Cannon Ball Aderly to Weather Report finally syndicate.Wanted more of your sound.
Thank you for blessing us with this undeniable footage of a legend at work, truly meaningful for a student of the game like myself to cherish one of the greatest in his natural habitat
Saw WR three times, saw this band (Weather Update), saw the Zainul solo tour, and saw the Syndicate 3-4 times. Zawinul was a true badass......I love his music.
This is the Joe that I miss, having fun, playing his toosh off and leading a great band. Peter is smokin on this along with Victor. Enjoyed every moment.
HE SHOOK MY HAND. WHEN HE WAS WITH CANNONBALL RIGHT AFTER BITCHES BREW CAME- OUT. WHEN I COMPLEMENTED HIM ON-IT HE IMMEDIATELY SHARED IT WITH THANK-YOU AND SAID CHICK AND I ......WHICH SHOWD ME HE NEVER THOUGHT HE WAS THE MAIN MAN...................HE TAUGHT ME ,(STILL-DOES) THAT THE STATUS THING CAN GET IN THE WAY AND THANK GOD FOR MORE THAN JUST MUSIC IN LIFE.....HE NEVER WAS INTO. FRONTING!!!! I'LL ALWAYS LOVE-HIM.
The first tune sounds like it came from his solo album di- a - lects which I have. One of my favorite musicians, I love all his music and his attituge/dedicationm he is an inspiration and will always be -fc
caught Joe Z years ago at the playboy jazz festival,, bill Cosby MC , one band finish, and the stage rotated around , and they came out playing bird land ,,,,,
Billy Barton Love his playing and arrangement, but his weakness is his synth patches. He has terrible taste in sounds. If he had hired a sound designer he would have been unstoppable even today. Maybe he should have gotten in with Bob Moog back in the day. Instead he went the route most keyboardists go, trying to use the latest technology, rather than what sounds good and timeless. Ironic how when musicians try to stay up to date their music does not age well.
Billy Barton Yes, he did. He was an amazing musician. But as a musician myself, and a keyboardist who only plays vintage analog instruments, I can tell you that it's not just me who is saying this. And I can't even say it's the early digital synths he was using, because I have heard him play an ARP 2600, which is an amazingly fat analog synth, and he's playing the cheesiest sine wave patches. That was his weakness. I just think he was a great piano player and musician who was not talented at programming synths, that's all. Contrast that with Herbie Hancock, who made the coolest and most timeless sounds that to this day do not sound dated. I am a hater of the Yamaha DX7 with a passion, but Herbie managed to make it sound cool, because he had an ear for synth programming that Zawinul lacked. When Zawinul plays piano or Rhoades though, it's like a different musician playing, and that's where he shines.
***** Like who? I think because he was such a good player, his sounds were admired by a pavlovian response, but no synth player I have heard uses simple sine wave patches on an ARP 2600. And Herbie Hancock, which is a huge influence, is far more copied. If you listen to Herbie/headhunters and the amazing timeless sounds he used, and even his early digital stuff, then hear Zawinul's sounds, his patches sound cheesy and dated, like he picked the first preset. I just don't think Zawinul was talented at programming synths. When he plays the piano or Rhodes, he's great, and occasionally he will play a cool patch, but rarely.
saw weather report in 19 76. very different to later digital keyboards. all analoge but wonderful . for 4 quid!, also spyro gyra in edinburgh. for a fiver. much gratitude for true heart art
fuck 2016... Victor, you will be missed!!!... Victor`s solo changed my life... for me it was`n`t jaco who got me to this point, it was Victor and this concert... min.24 and min 35:30... it`s crazy... genius...
Joe Zawinul & Lyle Mays the only 2 jazz keyboard players than make anything but cold electric jazz! These guys are/where the masters of their tools. Amazing the tones Zawinul uses. What year was this recording? Was it ever released on cd?Anyone....
Must desagree! He is in trance and involved, like the rest of the crew! Most often has eye-contact with Zawinul! Perhaps his glasses make you think he is bored! Cheers! Mo
Tracks 1. The Harvest 2. Dr. Honoris Causa 3. Update 4. Consequently 5. Face The Fire 6. This Is This 7. Badia / Boogie Woogie Waltz Personnell: Joe Zawinul - synthesizers & vocoder Steve Khan - guitar Victor Bailey - bass Robert Thomas Jr. - percussion Peter Erskine - drums
Miss Him So Much.....Not Fair, he passes from a rare skin Disease.....I saw him with Weather Report in the early eighties, then Played with Jaco myself circa 1986? Then with Weather Report not long after Victor Bailey Joined the group.....
Saw Weather Update in the Fall of 1986 in Boston. I believe it was supposed to be with Mahavishnu but Jonas Hellborg had a passport problem. Local fusion band "Tiger's Baku" opened up for Weather Update instead. This might have been at Berklee. Was anyone at this show? Anyone know the date of the show? September????
It was in the late 50s or early 60s when I met Joe first in Innsbruck when he played with Fatty George, I was a child and he bought me some ice cream, that's why I remember that afternoon. Seeing Joe Zawinul smiling makes me smile.
you're right, this man didn't seem to smile for a scramble
Joe Zawinul is the Master Innovator of Fusion Jazz. He will not, and cannot be duplicated. Copied?, yes, but the mold has been broken. ONE OF A KIND. You're gone, but your legacy lives on!!! Thank you for the memories!!!!!
Peace and Love,
One name, one band, that ere close contenders but heavier the way I lIT... UZEB !!!! 😎
You are absolutely on track. I don’t know why he wasn’t given the accolades he deserves which tells a lot about the current state of popular music.
Also arguably the Godfather of World Music as a popular wave phenomenon and a "genre" (along with Fela Kuti, Herbie Hancock and Peter Gabriel)
Great Zawinul, he's (he was) the very best!
I never saw WR play live but I did see Joe Z live at the Blue Note in NYC! What a great night! I was lucky to have been there!
Bass players always got it up for Joe.... He had his own unique everything going on old Joe. Miss him :-( He left a lot though :-))
Saw this in 1983 at the Greek Theater in L.A. Mahavishnu Orchestra opened up for them. What an amazing night. A highlight of my 40 years of going to shows.
I saw that tour in DC. I don't think it was '83 though. 85 or 86

Zawinul So unusual, so unique, so refreshing,. You need a passport to listen to him.
Yes, a great original - and a guy who escaped the holocaust as a child (he had 1/4 gypsy ancestry but managed to stay under the radar of the NaZ's.
Well put.
Wow! Never heard any live cuts off This Is This before!
Drummers and percussionists always get grief from Askholes...maybe Zawinul needs to try a Guffing cardboard box. Arrogant baxterd !!! 😂
The audience is SO mind blown that they've been rendered catatonic!! 😀
Zawinul just keeps getting better and better
there will never be a duplicate of Joe Zawinul.A master of swing .bebop and fusion.early years of Cannon Ball Aderly to Weather Report finally syndicate.Wanted more of your sound.
...and let's not forget he composed the soulful track, 'Mercy, Mercy, Mercy' for Cannonball!

The first tune sounds like it came from his solo album di- a - lects which I have. One of my favorite musicians, I love all his music and his attituge/dedicationm he is an inspiration and will always be -fc

54:21 Y esos sonidos... A años luz de cualquier otro músico de jazz.
I love the good part of the internet.
magic... love... magic...
Zawinul was so intense. Like he is a cook in the kitchen brewing up a stew.
Billy Barton Love his playing and arrangement, but his weakness is his synth patches.

I'm not so critical. He made a difference in music.

+wiremessiah I wonder why so many players copy his sounds?

Consequenly from 24.00 is a Weather Report great.
Since 73 JZ has used his tune Badia via WR to deliver his most inscrutable voodoo this is no exception. But kinda prefer the original versions.
Miss Him So Much.....Not Fair, he passes from a rare skin Disease.....I saw him with Weather Report in the early eighties, then Played with Jaco myself circa 1986? Then with Weather Report not long after Victor Bailey Joined the group.....
une musique avec 50 ans d'avance sur son temps

You should try Carolina reaper. You'd unstoppable in death metal.
