Gabor, thank you so much for putting this gem on the net. I had recorded it when it was live in 1986, then lost the recording over the years. Had hoped that the complete version would surface on RUclips - it finally has :-) They don't make them anymore like this ...

This is freaking incredible. Pure spontaneous musica expression. I've known Zawinul's music from Weather Report and from Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley record, but must admit this is my first taste of Friedrich Gulda's music. What a great musician, what a great match.
He doesn't look very well at all in this concert; even more remarkable then the beautiful music he manages to produce; such a great loss to music; we've lost too many characters like him.....Rubinstein, Ogdon, Cliburn......now the music colleges seem to turn out mechanics who can play the notes but don't all produce the music. Andre Previn said at a Leeds Piano Competition years ago that "It's discouraging that technique is now taken for granted...." Part of the music-creation experience is overcoming the technical challenges to get inside the composer's intentions. If it's too easy then the piano can just become a musical typewriter.....
I dare an opinion (that might be completely wrong). Maybe, there have always been just a handful of great musicians, but, as we look back, we see them all together; but in a century, how many giants could we name? Maybe, simply, great musicians are rare, and it's that rarity that makes them so precious. Gulda is probably my all times favorite. But as I'm listening to a complete different technique by Angela Hewitt, It makes me think, music is infinite, and so, hopefully, great musicians will be.
And fools continue to mock the gods. Who said that? But really, art is about INTERPRETATION. Isn't it? So who's to say Rubinstein & Cliburn weren't musical typewriters? Someone besides you with a differing OPINION? Please try to remind those who read your words that, "this is my opinion!" (IMO) Oh, and didn't you forget Horowitz and Kempff? Listen to Kissin, Wang, Lang Lang (just listen and ignore the hate critics), and how can you not recognize the women: de Larrocha, Argerich (you know Gulda taught her)! THEY are typewriters? REALLY! So many new bright burning beautiful stars on the piano horizon! IMO, they stand on the shoulders of those giants you named, among so many other stars in the pianistic galaxy, and I say they honor them, not desecrate! If you can not hear their gift and beauty I feel sorry for you and conclude you must be deaf! That said, this is about Gulda - I agree he doesn't look well, but dear Lord, could he play! The Schubert was perfection, as good as any secretary types. lol
At 47 there is a Moment, when I would like to turn up Joe´s volume, right. But I am afraid, this is due to a problem in the recording. And in fact, Friedrich is soloing there, so...
this is gods Music........gulda and zawinul where not atheists..........Facts and love from vienna Austria.........where it all began,.Haydn,.Mozart,.Beethoven,.schubert,.,.etc.........
the fuck. that music is transcendental. it does not know one god. it does not know any god. it allows you to feel your god. thats what makes this beautiful.
Are you referring to the 8 greatest musicians from the Classical West, ja?...Let’s not forget the East and the modern West!!...Finally, just because you are published and documented doesn’t necessarily make you the greatest or the best, and by extension in any other field.

Joe Zawinul : the man who made the synth sound human. RIP Master of All Keyboards.
such a nicely said. thank you
two genious masters of musical inspiration - R.I.P.
Zawinul was probably the most creative keyboarder of the 20th century.
I've been listening, watching, over and over. Each time, fresh and new. Thank you Gabor !
It's pure magic! God bless them!!!!!!!!
Incredible. Why have I never come across this before? Talent like like this is sadly becoming rarer as time goes on.
no, you just have to look for it in different places these days! :)
exactly, and it may be manifest differently...take Arnel Pineda for example...a genius beyond his years!

Such beautiful virtuoso 👍👍👍
47:13 - the Seinfeld bass sound!!!!

Dream Clock at 1:28:48
From min 18:00 on what song is it?
1:02:30 cool take off sound and the piano heading somewhere or not?
💛☺️🌟❣️
Was this from 1986? If so, Gulda is only 56 years old here but he looks like he's 90. Zawinul is 54 and looks it.
Playing with toys keeps a boy young.

Ian McKinnon what a wonderful comment. My heart cries for the very same reason

it's a pity that gulda is almost always too loud in the mix..it's almost as if joe was just the "background accompaniment"...

What ignorance? Eight of the ten greatest musicians who ever lived were from German speaking countries.

@@archivtv5460 ooohh danke tausend Mal! Probiere ich gleich aus. 👍👍 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Gulda was brilliant, but not innovative. Zawinul was plenty innovative in addition.
Gulda is boring
I do not share this.
