What is wrong with God? Bowie, Prince, Maurice White, Toots Thielemans, Greg Lake, Victor Bailey... What a sad year. One thing's for sure, it's becoming on hell of a jam session up there.
I saw this band on tour supporting the Procession Album, the only change being Bobby Thomas Jr on percussion. Everytime one saw Weather report one knew at least one star was born. Omar hakim almost made me quit playing drums that night; he was astounding, and still is.
Omar Hakim is by far the best drummer Weather Report has ever had. His versatility, energy, enthusiasm and technique are unmatched. WR was lucky to get him. A real gem.
+Alexandre Soares I think it is incorrect to say that Omar Hakim was the best drummer that Weather Report ever had. This band is a totally different inception of Weather Report. I heard them all and 30 years later all I can say is that Zawinul impresses me most. I love Hancock, Corea, Methany and many others but Joe's contribution to the art ( we call music) is overshadowing everyone else. They don't even make solos, and why should they? All of them together are telling us the story. His music sounds like from another world or place in space. Just think about it. Listen to track #3 from ( NYC ) 1982 album"Weather report". I loved their records around that time. I saw them in Manchester in mid '83. They played spectacularly well, but had an odd, boomy sound balance. Maybe it was the venue to blame - an old, classic Victorian theatre, not built for large scale amplifiers.

I've always been more of a Chick Corea guy and have seen RTF a number of times but have to say that Joe really impresses me. He can create a mood like no one else and is a fantastic composer. Just listen to A Remark You Made from Heavy Weather. The synthesizer work is almost indescribable. I'ts amazing how many great musicians came out of Miles' academy of fusion in the late '60s to early '70s particularly the landmark albums In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew. Zawinul, Shorter, Corea, Mclaughlin, Hancock , Williams and the list goes on....
I believe this was their 1st record after Jaco Pastorius was no longer with the band. Despite his huge presence, and absence Procession, Domino Theory, and Sporting Life was some of the best material they put out there. Victor Bailey added his own dimension to the sound, a new just as great a version, in other words he killed it. Jaco & Victor are sorely missed, along with Zawinul. I was lucky enough to see these configurations with Jaco & Victor.
What are all Joe's keyboards here? I see Oberheim Xpander, Sequential Prophet T8, Rhodes Chroma(?), and ARP Quadra, but I can't tell what's underneath the ARP. This is a real treat!!! Been a fan of this incarnation of the band since my young teens. Cool to see them soundchecking some "Sportin Life" tunes!
+mootbooxle At 40:20 you can see the keyboard below the Quadra and it looks like a Prophet 5 to me. I may be wrong. Not sure what's below that. The rest you mention are spot on.
+mootbooxle A wild stab in the dark for the other two mystery keyboards. Possibly the keyboard from an Arp 2600 under the prophet 5, and I may have gotten a slight glimpse of blue from the keyboard below the Xpander which looked a little Emulator 1 like. Not convinced, but a possibility.
On Joe's right bottom (ie. the side facing the audience), it looks like a KORG_POLY_6? He uses it for the 'jazz guitar' type tone on "A Remark You Made" solo.
I'm mad about it too. Made an audio loop a few times, so I can enjoy it for a longer time! I play piano but never wanted to know the chords they play. It's like magic. If you know how it's done - the magic it's gone.
Al Bo When Pastorius played well, he could be amazing, but he did not always do that... Same with Zawinul, which seemed sloppy far to often (despite being very good at times, and being a great and creative composer). Shorter was more consistently top notch and always played tasteful high quality solos, riffs, harmonics and fills, despite Joe or Jaco's often quite uneven performances.
Zawinul needed a different bass player. i think there was too much competition between Joe and Jaco, and in my opinion Victor Bailey replaced Jaco with no regrets. I love both the same, one is a genius of the instrument, the other one, Victor is a Giant. i miss them so much
oh noo, the duet improvisation is cut out :/ would it be possible to upload also that part.. Its a rare and beautiful moment in history of music. thanks a lot

The end of Where The Moon Goes... sick!
I'm mad about it too. Made an audio loop a few times, so I can enjoy it for a longer time!
I play piano but never wanted to know the chords they play. It's like magic. If you know how it's done - the magic it's gone.
The hardest song The Manhattan Transfer ever sang..
Omar is so tight! SICK
Jacos boots probably were too big. Otherwise nice bassplaying.
It depends.... For me, i like other bassplayers with Weather report more. Jaco was a monster, but to me, i got so tired of his sound and aproach.
I love both the same, one is a genius of the instrument, the other one, Victor is a Giant. i miss them so much
11:57 sick beat drop!
11:49 actually
nice music
oh noo, the duet improvisation is cut out :/

Simply: Top Notch!

Magnifique
A Remark you made 40:00
30 Jahre und so frisch......
What's the song right before they start Db waltz at the beginning? It's not in their discography...
Nessuno mai mi ha dato tanto....
No Jaco.......still sounds great but Jaco is sorely missed!
Omar...
awesome good!
Weather Report live at montreux
perfect. ...
Go Omar...whoa.
Le serengeti sans le cri du lion, c'est comme weather raport sans le son de la bass à Jaco...
Damn I wish Omar and Mino had a chance to play with Jaco. I don’t think they ever overlapped, right?
Yes
