When they take the rhythm into double time, Jaco flows just like water. Every note is perfect like his fingers are on autopilot. Thats just outlandish! Best tone and electric jazz bassist to ever exist I think.
Jaco's the baddest bassist and arguably one of the baddest musicians of the 20th century. if you follow him, every single note has flawless purpose. it's difficult to understate how ridiculous his virtuosity is, and the fact he just grooves with it is even more impressive. you'll never hear this again...Jaco still held the key and flirted with the root note, but he's really his own force of nature. next time you hear a repeating bass line, think about how superior this is by comparison
The chemistry this era weather report. Wayne being Wayne. Joe guiding the harmony along. Jaco so musical and creative while staying RIGHT in the pocket. Simply magical.
saw these cats in 1980...the best concert that I've been to...and I've been to many many concerts before and after weather report. must say as far as concerts, earth wind and fire was running neck and neck with these cats.
I feel wayne is actually uncomfortable. All sweaty, sometimes giving this “what am I even doing here” look. Looks like Joe or Acuña are having more fun
Wow wow wow. I am a huge jaco fan and I just heard this recording for the first time. He is incredible. Never missing a beat. Wish I was alive to see this band.
They were going to make this song the theme for the show Sanford and Son but it was WAY TOO Cool and FuNkY for Fred and Grady! Man, what a groove they had going....this is the epitome of the 70's!
I saw this line up in 77/ The Heavy Weather tour/Al Dimeola opened up for them/ I was 18 year,s old the hair was standing on top of my head wow!! Clayton
I SO much loved this version of the band! They had a similar revelation with Alex Acuna that they had previously gone thru with Dom - the guy they thought of as "percussionist" was MORE than capable of filling that drummer's chair! Alex and Jaco together were magic!
That bouncing beat. Like a guy with a basketball. I’m absolutely in awe at the greatest bass player we’ll ever hear. They don’t turn up often, these genius instrumentalists with the ear of a Bach or a Mozart. In fact I can only think of two, Pastorius and Jimi Hendrix.
When i was in Spain for a bit i found this amazing version of Barbary Coast at that time I was swinging heavy with the fusion sound made those Spanish nights unforgettable, to my dismay when I got back to the states and tried finding this on YT it said it wasn’t available in our country, for a couple years Ive been periodically searching for this performance, thank you to whoever uploaded this, you definitely have a greatly appreciated viewer! Take easy y’all
surgical groove at the beginning and then the rhythmic fly up with a legendary osmosis, incredible aware, a divine inspiration, a masterpiece, pure and simple...
One of their most underrated pieces. The fact that most ‘A’ grade bassists can keep up til they go double-time plus induces a false sense of security and the trademark mischievous grin gives the game away, yup, they’re off on one! Zawinul’s facials are also a joy to behold on this particular very special rendition. I’m sure they did it better later with Erskine because he had the swing thing, but this has such an attack to it, an iron fist in a velvet glove.
You just can not compare this band to any other band, ever! They sounded like no other band and this is what makes them the greatest Fusion Band in history!
That moment when they capture the Jaco grin, the ‘oh yes!’ An absolute jam. They were the greatest band on the planet for a while and stayed that great for several years. I’ve never heard anything to compare with this.
Alex Acuna, Jaco, and Manolo Badrena (?). They've got it going on, holy smokes. This is just amazing...what a treasure to watch this all these years later,
Is this all we have left this can never ever ever go away too ridiculously nasty Rip Zawinule and Pastorious and I'm just sad never got to see this awesome Band live the Best W.R.
Embora esta não tenha sido a formação original do WEATHER REPORT, dizer o que desta sonoridade? SENSACIONAL, Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Manolo Badrena e Alex Acuña, além do ótimo gosto musical, mostram neste vídeo, o quanto eram músicos de excepcionais qualidades.
shekere, its from west africa and is a holow dried gourd with a net of beads very loose around it. We used to call it a cabasa in our band but today its replaced by a drum of metal beads on a wooden handle that gives a sound like it and is very compact. you shake, slap or twist it in time. cool instrument. also used in cuba and brazil, different names.
The shortstops, the pa-pa-pa ghost notes, the sheer fucking precision of the playing. Oh My God. A man who understood the bing on the bang of the bong. Only about 5 people understood the bing on the bang of the bong AND COULD PLAY IT. Jaco Pastorius could swing with God himself and go ‘COME ON!’. We’ll not see his like again.
Zawinul to Pastorius shortly after he joined the band: ‘you’re with us now, we know how good you are, just relax and use that tone of yours. Use your tone.’ Listen to ‘Cannonball’.
Jaco and creating the spare bar/spare note! No no you don’t just through the octaves you’ve got space. Only Pastorius understood this. Zaminul I think think had an inkling, the space at the end of a long phrase.
About the train sound effect at the beginning: Wayne Shorter grew up in South Street, Newark, one of the last houses before the railroad tracks leading to Penn Station. I'm wondering if that memory didn't play a part on this composition! Just a thought!
How does Pastorius play those short stopped notes, at that speed? I’ve tried, I can’t do it. With ghost notes thrown in. On a scale of 10 I’d give myself a 6 or 7, I can’t do this stuff which he suggests is easy. I have same problem with ‘River People’, ‘oh octaves doubled, easy!’ After a minute you hurt and you’ve got cramp. And he’s laughing through 8 minutes of it. Then when they played ‘River People’ live they played it much faster! I was like, ‘Stoppit you bastard!’
Jaco Pastorius was truly one of the greatest bass players in the history of music. But he would’ve not of been 1/2 without the drummers & percussionists he was playing with. Acuna, Don Elias, Peter Eckstein and all of them! Bassists out there, give props to the percussionist/drummers you’re working with. You’re not a F****** thing without them
What a band! WR burns! Joe called Jaco ‘the warhead’ cause when he’s on target that shit is just gone. WR is gonna close the show cause what band ever is gonna want to follow this?
This is the greatest 9 minutes in the history of recorded music
One of the most incredible pieces of bassing ever, of all time. The way he creates space, it’s hard to put into words.
C# is such a funky key on bass because the minor 3rd is the open E string. Jack’s groove is absolutely deadly.
This guy funks
Black Sabbath tuning
I wish the world could harmonize like Weather Report. It didn't matter your skin tone, religion or native tongue you just got funky with it. Yea Baby.
When they take the rhythm into double time, Jaco flows just like water. Every note is perfect like his fingers are on autopilot. Thats just outlandish! Best tone and electric jazz bassist to ever exist I think.
Hell yeah bro ... golden fingers
His grooves and basslines were always perfect. And he never got in the way of the soloist.
Approved !!

Joe Zawinul (p), Wayne Shorter (t sax), Jaco Pastorius (b), Alex Acuna (d) and Manolo Badrena (perc) live at Montreux in 1976.
saw these cats in 1980...the best concert that I've been to...and I've been to many many concerts before and after weather report. must say as far as concerts, earth wind and fire was running neck and neck with these cats.
wayne always has the calmest, most spiritual look on his face. And it's magical
@IPSECMERLIN Merlin same thing
I feel wayne is actually uncomfortable. All sweaty, sometimes giving this “what am I even doing here” look. Looks like Joe or Acuña are having more fun
@@nelsonpereira9306 nah wayne absolutely loved playing live especially when it came to the jams with Jaco. Hes just focused on the funk 2:30 and 8:10
@IPSECMERLIN Merlin lol well there it it. fun thread
@IPSECMERLIN Merlin I never said they weren't.
That chord Joe Zawinul plays at 6:31 is gnarly
I love how the guy shaking the Gourd thing looks like he's having a hell of a fun time.
awesomepossum890 that groove is killer he's having a ball
cat's name...Manola Badrena...Legend...
I want to have that kind of a good time every time I play! Badrena!
That groove so subtly depends on Badrena to both feel the spirit of it all and keep it alive. It's such an overlooked nuance.
@@mr.enigma4475 Indeed! Shaking a big gourd like that and keep it in a good swung feel is straight endurance.
Some of the best playing I've heard from Wayne Shorter. In the zone.
Wow wow wow. I am a huge jaco fan and I just heard this recording for the first time. He is incredible. Never missing a beat. Wish I was alive to see this band.
Saw them at Berklee in Boston 1976. Incredible show.
They were going to make this song the theme for the show Sanford and Son but it was WAY TOO Cool and FuNkY for Fred and Grady! Man, what a groove they had going....this is the epitome of the 70's!
Jaco's groove is just soo deep it's almost impossible.
Matthew Wynne Yeah, and because of that, whoever the drummer was in all the WR versions, could just play over the top
Weather report had a synergy like no other!
No one could groove like Jaco, the guy was just incredible.
Badrena and Alex were awesome together - as wall the whole band (special love for Jaco - as a bass player).
I was 1980.at Weather Report concert in Zagreb Croatia. It was a great concert
That bouncing beat. Like a guy with a basketball. I’m absolutely in awe at the greatest bass player we’ll ever hear. They don’t turn up often, these genius instrumentalists with the ear of a Bach or a Mozart. In fact I can only think of two, Pastorius and Jimi Hendrix.
this is one of the best live shows from any band. I keep coming back to this groovy laden show!
I love the contrast between JZ's expressive face and WS's poker face!
I’ve heard it a hundred times. I weep at this. It’s probably the best bassing I’ve ever heard.
surgical groove at the beginning and then the rhythmic fly up with a legendary osmosis, incredible aware, a divine inspiration, a masterpiece, pure and simple...

Tuve la gran oportunidad de verlos en buenos aires en el año 1980,es uno de los recuerdos mas hermosos que tuve en mi vida, realmente impresionante
6:14 The band starts to come off the floor and defy gravity! Even Zawinul can't believe his eyes!
My favorite Weather Report lineup.
Same here
They were all so great But I have to agree with you!
Had the great pleasure to attend an Alex Acuna drum clinic a few years ago. I learned so much in two hours. Such a kind human and great musician!
Jaco is going at the end, ‘can we play this even faster!’ I love That Man.
You just can not compare this band to any other band, ever! They sounded like no other band and this is what makes them the greatest Fusion Band in history!
One of my favorites! I'm glad I got to hear it in person!
That moment when they capture the Jaco grin, the ‘oh yes!’ An absolute jam. They were the greatest band on the planet for a while and stayed that great for several years. I’ve never heard anything to compare with this.
I think the grin was because they brought it back to the head when he wasn't ready. But it didn't matter cause his timing was so on point.
Just maybe the greatest band Ever!
Alex Acuna, Jaco, and Manolo Badrena (?). They've got it going on, holy smokes. This is just amazing...what a treasure to watch this all these years later,
what about wayne shorter
Escondidas Finn what about zawinul
was just talking bass and drums, Wayne and Josef are amazing as always too!
That rhythm section was obliterating it
Its so funny.....every time i start watching this clip.....i just cannot stop watching it. These guys got to me,im a goner :D
wayne is so damn nonchalant so damn untriggered it's a great lesson in zen ...ultimate focus & playing impeccably
Galileo Shift precisely, it’s that spiritual fire.
He spent 6 years with Miles...
I saw this band in 77/ My hair was standing on top of my head the whole time! Al Diemiola opened for them ,Wow! Clay
I saw this same show Sept 1977/ Al Dimeola opened up for them! Greensboro Nc/ Piedmont Sportsman Arena! William
Badrena gives me life every single time!!! Talk about loving what you do in life
Is this all we have left this can never ever ever go away too ridiculously nasty Rip Zawinule and Pastorious and I'm just sad never got to see this awesome Band live the Best W.R.
when they get into the Eb jam it sounds like what became "The Pursuit of the Woman With the Feathered Hat" jam, on the Mr. Gone album.
David P come on come over.
A versão ao vivo é muito superior ao estúdio. Ouvir isso treinando é maravilhoso
Jaco‘s bass line is sort of a signature line. I heard him using it it several times, e.g. on Al di Meola’s album Land of the Midnight Sun.
Embora esta não tenha sido a formação original do WEATHER REPORT, dizer o que desta sonoridade? SENSACIONAL, Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Manolo Badrena e Alex Acuña, além do ótimo gosto musical, mostram neste vídeo, o quanto eram músicos de excepcionais qualidades.
Poker face Shorter is giving tiny looks left and right ‘yup I’m listening!’ What a joy to watch.
Alex Acuña.... Master and piu sesión drum of Jaco.Es un privilegio ,para ambos !!!

This song drives and jams hard. Weather report rules 🙏😇💖💪👏.

Whoa. Thanks for the upload. Jaco is playing really focused here. Beautiful tone too.
SOOOO ON POOOINT, LOOOVE IT!! they grooove soooo well!!
Makes me happy and dancing alone infront of my display :D
Zawinul to Pastorius shortly after he joined the band: ‘you’re with us now, we know how good you are, just relax and use that tone of yours. Use your tone.’ Listen to ‘Cannonball’.
I love the sly grin Wayne gives Joe at 2:50, like he's thinking "Wow man, we've got us a bass player here".
beautiful tune, thank you for uploading nearly 15 years ago
insane, what a bass line. Just amazing music
Thank you for sharing. WR has such a great sound. Love/miss Jaco. Such a talent!
Thanks Jaco for this mega groovy tune! It´s not always obvious who has composed what in WR!
Acuna, Badrena & Jaco never lettin that groove up, damn!
Seriously, man. Just CRANKING
Porca zozza che 3 soggetti!
It’s more or less perfect. Zawinul conducting is going, a little less a little more! C’est magnifique.
Only one man can compete with this, Mick Karn who studiously avoided Jaco but I bet listened privately all the time!
RIP Wayne Shorter, thank you so much!
Лучший состав Репорт. Джако прекрасен!
Jaco and creating the spare bar/spare note! No no you don’t just through the octaves you’ve got space. Only Pastorius understood this. Zaminul I think think had an inkling, the space at the end of a long phrase.
and a great sax named Wayne Shorter..... did you know him?
original lineup with Alex Acuna....supergroove bass line...clean and bright ...the legendary Weather Report tone and sound...WOW!!!
Yeah, at double time. Amazing
About the train sound effect at the beginning: Wayne Shorter grew up in South Street, Newark, one of the last houses before the railroad tracks leading to Penn Station. I'm wondering if that memory didn't play a part on this composition!

Been looking for this for bout a year now 🙌🏾 .. thanks for the vid
Fantastic video - and the most fun I have ever seen JZ have ;)

Tears I never got to this great legendary Band play
I love the faces Joe makes. ahaha !! :D
Jaco is gettin Joe off big time!
Génial, for the moment it's my favourite WR video. The groove is perfect and the sound too!
dont miss Alex's improv with Lyle Mays> "Duo #2"...stunning!
This is the only recording of this song being played live to my knowledge.
aXios I had never considered that before!
I think you might be right!
Nah the Peter Erskine lineup did Barbary Coast.
wait how NO ONE ever realised the rhythm on double time is just that one section from "come on, come over" by jaco pastorius 😂💯
30 years ago i saw this on vhs video. Made my day and life.
One of Jacos best Groove
Jaco Pastorius was truly one of the greatest bass players in the history of music. But he would’ve not of been 1/2 without the drummers & percussionists he was playing with. Acuna, Don Elias, Peter Eckstein and all of them! Bassists out there, give props to the percussionist/drummers you’re working with. You’re not a F****** thing without them
Let's not forget who's the mastermind cooking all this up, yep the guy at the keyboards
Actually i thibk jaco wrote this song. But yes zawinul wrote alot
Among jazz musicians it's Shorter's body of work pre Weather Report that's most influential
This was actually one of the first weather report songs written by jaco
Jaco wrote the song
joe zawinuls melodies and accents are insane
This is what should be on television.
2 dead, 2 Roman Catholics, titest band ever. Thanks for posting. Glad I got to see Jaco before he died. God Bless.
joes textures are out of this world
What a band! WR burns! Joe called Jaco ‘the warhead’ cause when he’s on target that shit is just gone. WR is gonna close the show cause what band ever is gonna want to follow this?
Alex burning those quarter notes on top of Jaco's sixteenth...this is the definition of organic synergy.
this sound is trickery funk music of harlen rsrs ! Jaco is the expert of swing bass !
Jaco is the swing Bass Man !
From Tartaria with love to human kind!
No words can express
the best band ever in the past century & for all centuries and ages & sheets.
Fuck TRAP
🤣🤣😅
Brilliant ❤
Right! Now we go double-time and even quicker! It’s brilliant and baffling.
Zawinul looks like he is about to jazz at 6:40
Most vital vibrant segment of the Weather Report discography ... b4 Jaco went ‘nanas ...
WR firing on all cylinders here! 😀
I'm watching Futurama right now!
Its beautiful innit?
@@craigcaver4051 Whoop whoop! 😃
Wayne looks like he got out of the shower to play on stage...
Straight up NBA playoffs sweat
Jaco.....💪🏽 nobody play like him...to the end of universe
