    3 simple rules
    1. Don't crash
    2. Finish the race.
    3. Don't say the N-word on your twitch live stream.

    Personally, whilst I understand some people recommend starting from the Pits when trying to get out of Rookies, I warn against doing so. You don’t learn how to race or how to avoid wrecks, by avoiding the racing entirely and if you do this, what happens when you reach the higher Licences? Yep, you find that you are the guy that hasn’t gained any of the racing experience that those around you gained when they were Gridding for races in Rookies.

      @ChambersofSiege You do, you learn to avoid them. You don't gain any experience in racing by not racing.

      Each to their own of course. Whatever you do, you’re going to get hit from time to time if you go racing, real or simulated and I’ll bet the ranch that everyone who complains about getting hit, has done their share of the hitting too, on occasion.

    I think the best way to do it is to do time trials. You don't need to worry about people crashing you out. As long as you don't go off the track (which you should be able to do if you want to race against other people anyway) you'll gain safety rating quickly. I got to A class in less than a month doing this.

  • @ThomasGallinari

    I can't believe iRacing published an official video where we are explained that racing is so dirty that we need to start at the back of the grid to avoid the mayhem.
    This is basically how to use the simulator to not simulate a race.
    You learn by doing things, not avoiding them.
    The rest of the video is pretty good anyway.

    • @backlog2389
      @backlog2389 4 года назад +1

      Agreed, qualifying at the back does nothing for you. I learned a lot about racing around others in Mazdas. It also has less of a tendency of ending your race when something goes wrong as compared to skippys or IMSA.

    • @GK-mm3nz
      @GK-mm3nz 4 года назад +1

      I started my iRacing account yesterday. I did about an hour of practice on Okayama (i think that's the name), qualified on pole for my first race, freaked out about being in first, cold tires going into the second corner, spun and got hit by two cars (my bad, what an idiot...). My second race I didn't qualify, started at the back, battled my way through the pack and got third I think. I learnt a lot in both races but I think for the enjoyment of everyone it was better for me to start at the back for at least the first few races. Just my two cents.

    • @JTheraos
      @JTheraos 28 дней назад +2

      If you've ever seen or looked into real life rookie racing, most coaches/team captains will tell their drivers to go slow and just get a feel for the car rather than worrying about placing. This is perfectly realistic advice. Obviously you don't TRY to qualify last, but you definitely just let people pass if you are new to racing and new to the car.

    Nice video! My safety rating before I watch this video was 2.79. I was fighting for the 3rd place every race and usually I used to get +.03 every race. After two races starting in the pits I got my D license and 2.43 safety rating.
    If you are a beginner like me, do what Dave does and you’ll get your D license in less than a day.
    Thank you Dave!

      @JTheraos 28 дней назад

      I joined iracing just 2 days ago and I've only done 3 races. Placed 3rd, second, and 1st, all with zero incidents and I already got my irating to 1540, got my safety rating to over 3.5 and got my license upgraded, which of course drops your safety rating by about 1 so my safety rating is now 2.60ish.

    And this very video got me into iRacing after nearly 10 years of hibernation. Couldn't reactivate my old account (only used for a few practice, so not really startet), so startet all over. And just following this video got me from Rookie over D to C in almost no time. OK, admit I've been a simmer for 35 years (definately born decades too soon).
    iRacing have improved a lot since the first beta proving grounds in the beginning.

      @JTheraos 28 дней назад

      @crussell6533 if you run clean races, you don't lose safety rating... safety rating has NOTHING to do with how you place in a race. If you mean you keep losing irating, that's because it has little to do with irating.

    My daughter just got her D license in three races. She practiced the track a few times ahead - over an hour. She qualified mid-pack, let lots of people by before turn 1, only had 1 incident point total for all three races. No on track passes, plenty of passing cars that spun or went to the pits. Laguna Seca was the track. The long front straight gives you some time to get to the back, or make a gap and avoid close racing in turn 1. iRacing has the schedule posted on their website so you can practice the week before if you like.

    great video. put simply, stay on track and avoid everyone like they're blind. iRating doesn't matter so it's not about finishing first, but finishing the safest. its easy to get mad at other people for crashing into you but at the end of the day, a smart driver will be the one who is able to avoid those people and take responsibility for the crashes they find themselves in lol

  • @ChiChiWoo
    @ChiChiWoo 4 года назад +1

    My guide:
    1. Do not qualify. This will put you at the back, but it’ll help you avoid crashes. Don’t be mad about your finish, it’s about safety.
    2. At the start of the race, try to fall back carefully, but not too much. It will give you more time to slow down without people rear ending you and affecting your SR.
    3. When you see smoke and/or cars wrecking, give a tap on the brakes and go slowly through without hitting anyone. Once through without damage, continue on.
    (Works on all types of tracks)

Had to concede on lap 15 and fell to 4th. Guy behind me was getting frustrated and decided to dive bomb me from behind on the Chicane (Turn 5?). My advice on how to get of rookie class? Don't. Stay in rookie for a season, learn your car and then learn car- and track awareness. Also learn to drive out of your comfort zone and off the line. It's rookie class for a reason and if you follow a video like this then you are a rookie (or curious)

    I agree on the part wait till the field spreads out, but what i miss is you have to train first i started last week in laguna seca ran multiple hours to set up my steering wheel, learning the track and car. Ended the first race on p1 second on p3 just by being faster because i spent more time. Yes ofcourse i had some bad races both my and mostly other faults, but if you race the way like dave showed you dont know how to follow other cars and how to safely overtake

    I am not fast so my goal is to drive constantly and I get mid pack finish sometimes top 5 and when I check the results the guys finished behind me where faster than but they spent more time off track because they where not consistent.

    Hey iRacing!! please add an option to "skip qualifying" so that people that do qualify don't have to wait the entire 5 minutes to race. That just makes it stale and boring. I don't mind the strategy, and I do the same...I just do a really slow lap so that I'm not the guy making everyone else fall asleep at the wheel while waiting on the race to start!

    • @T1cksandLeeches

      @What's on my mind that's called a workaround, not an in-game option. Clicking a button would be a lot faster and easier, and allow you to practice without having to leave for qualifying and hoping you can get back into the server before the race. If everyone has qualified/skipped, the qualifying period doesn't need to drag on for the entire time. It would be a nice quality of life upgrade is all.

    Premise: I love Dave videos! That said, why does it seem that getting out of Rookie is incredibly hard?

      That said I indeed had the mindset, meaning that I knew I wasn't trying to win fights but just stay out of troubles.
      My first race I got rammed real hard on turn one, had my car broke and just left but after that I did the aftermentioned 4-5 races and just doing my thing was enough to win a couple and get out of Rookies :)

      Luck can play a big part. I ran my first race yesterday. Started on pole and there was a big wreck on the first lap and knocked 3rd place back to 20+s away. 2nd was 5s away. All I had to worry about were some backmarkers so I came up within a few car lengths and let them spin themselves out and went on by. I doubt I'll be that lucky every time. Main thing is to stay on track, avoid the walls and avoid other cars. Worry less about your finishing position and more about losing points. If you know someone is going to go for a gap let them go. It's just not worth the effort in the beginning.

    • @backlog2389
      @backlog2389 4 года назад

      @@johnnypenso9574 I think your mind will change as time goes on. When you get to IMSA series those early positions/aggressiveness can really save you a lot of time and can be the difference between a shot at winning and only getting a top 5. I'm not saying you should be taking people out, just make sure you stand your ground and even be on the offensive.

    Don't you just love it when Back-Markers try to block you out? It's the epitome of bad sportsmanship. It's not like they ever had a hope of winning to begin with. All they're trying to do is make everyone that's doing well as miserable as they are. You know what they say. The second you get successful enough to pick your head up and see over the fence, people will inevitably start throwing rocks at your head just to spite your success.

    Just got out of rookie after 6 races. For me starting in top 5 or in the back is what worked. People disconnect after a while in the race so finishing in a good position isn't really the priority. Safety first xD

    Honestly, I always seen people looking for guides how to leave rookies. I'm not sure if I just was lucky. I made literally 4 races and was out of rookies. It was the simplest thing ever. In all races I finished 6th. In one of the races I had a crazy dive bomber so I finished with 4x and in another race I went off track once and so I only had 1x. The other 2 I was 0x. It's simple, don't crash. You have to be preventive of what the others are doing. I see two guys fighting in front of me. Most likely I won't be trying to overtake them both. Before overtaking I also analyze the other guy in front of me. Sometimes they are going all crazy trying to get out of your tail, but they just end up making a mistake. You just have to be patient. If you avoid all crashes you will most likely not have any problems with the rookies, even the crazy guys. If you see an overly aggressive, weaving driver, just let him have the position, why bother fighting? You don't gain anything yet for winning, so you might as well want to get out of rookies asap

    I played my first time on an oval course as a rookie, yesterday. It was a bit difficult to prevent a crash. Many racers crashed into the wall or drifted and turned. So someone pushed me into the wall so I turned as well. I like Nascar and oval courses. But now I have a rookie of 2.68 now. I had a bad start.
    Edit: My mistake was that I did a qualify and placed 7th of 20 drivers. The next try is to skip the qualifying.

      Its not about finishing position, so your pace does not matter at all; all that matters is that you dont rack up offtracks or car contacts.

    Well I survived the rookie classes but don't have 150 dollars to drive a b class series. This is why so many series are empty most of the time. They need cheaper options because having to buy many tracks plus a car is insane. Even if they went 5 bucks a track they would see an increase in people playing.

    • @Valenfield98
      @Valenfield98 4 года назад +1

      In this case, think and buy "smart". Check not just the IMSA race calendar for example, but also other series like Skip Barber, VRS GT Sprint, iLms etc... Very likely if for example today, you raced at Monza in IMSA, that same track next week may be in iLms. So yeah, check the series and make a calendar based on the content you have. By doing this, you won't be throwing 150$ each month and still have plenty of racing

    • @marycrush906
      @marycrush906 4 года назад +2

      @@Valenfield98 Buy smart??? That doesn't change the fact that you have to eventually pay 150 dollars to run a smaller series. That's insane. I have already decided that if I buy a series it will only be street stock C license because It has the biggest pop. Others series that I looked into had 1 or 2 people in a practice and none to race. I looked at various times of the day and have been researching a lot so the pop didn't grow much throughout a day cycle. So, my point was if they had a reasonable price package for a series beyond the rookies iracing would be huge. I believe this had killed iracing potential to have a huge community. I actually looked into iracing back in 2012 and I didn't stay for this very reason. Buying a track at a time and so forth doesn't work for most because you get bored of the 1 track a week garbage series you have to do while you are piecemealing a future series.

    Just get gud, qualify first, and then leave everyone else behind EZ. Honestly though, not qualifying only has the benefit of not getting hit from behind on the first corner. The other side effect is that you see every single wreck that will occur during the race (better get good at wreck avoidance and predicting the unpredictable). Another issue is that you have to pass people that are slower than you and typically these people are not very good at going two wide. The best advice for qualifying is to just qualify the best you can. I learned that lesson the hard way and you don't have to.

    I would qualify, usually on the first two rows, and after 3-4 races, I got out of rookie. Just need to be mindful of your rear view mirror going into T1 on lap 1 and keep the off tracks to a minimum.

    • @thelarry383
      @thelarry383 4 года назад

      @GT1 You should avoid quitting races as it hurts your irating a lot more than just running the race to the finish, even if it's towards the back. The more good corners you have vs incident points, the better. That's what I've read about in the forums.

    I'm no pro but I got outta rookies in like 4 races in the mx5. I'm just careful and I don't fight people. open practices should ONLY be used to familiarize yourself with the track and traffic. the grip(details unknown) is much different.

    Great guide and tips but it does assume you are better than everyone else in the field! 🤣
    I understand the philosophy behind it all, but he entered the race being at least two seconds faster than the best driver (as stated at the start) in the race. His opponents could do nothing against his perfect brake timing and clean lines. A true rookie is not going to be this clean. Again, I understand it's not about position, but I just found it amusing having a pro showing how "easy" it is to do this. Well sure - for you!
    And I half expected Luca to T-bone him on the corner after he passed him or to simply turn into him on the initial pass.

    Also, don’t think its always everyone fault. You have part of responsibility and if not you could often have seen it coming and react better to dodge the contact.

    I asked iRacing Support to check my past 10 incidents since other people wreck around me and give me 4x on oval track. So lets imagine I run a perfect 25 lap race that's only +0.05 safety rating, but a 4x is -.02, and a 8x is -.1 like how am I suppose to have fun.....? Only two options: 1. sit in the back and stare at the clouds 2. have fun and try get bumped a little but get a 4x for slight contact or have someone wreck the whole field in front of me. It just makes no sense why they would link me this video in my support ticket so I guess I will ask support questions.

    Last night I was racing a Dallara race at Texas. Had a 0x the entire race. I didn't get involved in any wrecks and was about to win. It was the last lap and some dipstick came outta pit road and just completely turns right up into me. Ruins my 0x and my chance to win. I finish second cuz I had to go to the pits.
