It's not just all of the track, but it's all of the track at the absolute limit of the car. Not artificially using all of the track where you drive out just because you know you're supposed to use it all.
I had to read what you said twice, and I understood it the second time. Very good point. As I once heard someone say, "Don't track-out just because you think you have to. Track-out because the speed of the car carries you out there." In other words, if the car isn't taking you to the track limits, you're going too slow. Easier said than done. I've been doing it for 25 years and I'm still trying to find time. :) It's a journey for some people.
I was about to say something similar. Suelio Almeida said this thing in one of his recent shorts. Big difference between widening the track artificially and pushing the car to the limit that forces it to use the track.
@@AdamB5000 yeah i once actualy made a video from gran turismo 7 and i will be very honest my inputs for brake and throtle were identical to what world record did but for some reason his car had way more grip than me. also steeering kinda matched too so i really dont understand how some people gaining so much grip while at it i really dont. i am only like a second away from it but damn its impossible to have that much grip in the corners.
I have only recently started sim racing at the age of 68 and had hit a wall on lap times that I couldn’t get through. A 70 year old friend who I met , so to speak through ACC who is in NZ and I’m in England by the way told me about this video which at first I was struggling to find , and just by him relating to me this method of driving over messenger gave me exactly what I needed to know to break through that wall and get faster . I was practicing driving at brands Hatch and just by being told what you show in this video I became faster . I have just watched this video and it’s a real revelation. I would recommend anyone trying to improve their lap times at any track to employ the method you show so well. Thanks you sir for in particular this video and I have subscribed and am looking forward to learning more from your other videos. My friend who I have never met from NZ has helped me immeasurably to enjoy and succeed in this sim racing malarkey and now I also have you to thank sir. Thanks and my very best wishes Brian.
What an awesome comment, I'm in the same scenario as you but 26 with a sim friend in Texas. Thanks for the video Dave, was a real help and I hope you're still crushing lap times and having fun Brian!
i always hear guys like you saying "use all the tracks", but this is the first time someone proved it to be of value in gaining lap time. This is an aha moment for me. Thank you.
No doubt you must use the track for your advantage on your exits or entry, but most critical of the critical is to rotate your car more efficiently, otherwise if at all you face any imbalances .
best youtuber simracer enthusiast without f**in' music in background and voice over all kind of sh.t arround, just A REAL VIDEO, so thankful Dave! You rocks as always
This was eye-opening - it's one thing to be told "use all the track" but another thing entirely to see the evidence of how much time it's worth! Thanks Dave
as someone who has been sim racing for a few months now, this is single handedly the most valuable video I have seen on SIM racing and using the track!
This is one thing I enjoy about racing in general. The fast and smooth guys take time to mentor the new guys. Giving back is always a classy move. Thank you Dave!
This helped me SO much, not just at spa but everywhere else! i gained a second right after watching this! im struggling a little bit on T10, just gotta keep practicing! THANK YOU
Amazing side by side comparison that actually shows what it means when people say "use all the track", and I also really appreciated the advice to sacrifice one corner to gain speed in the next corner in certain situations. That's a huge difference. As a beginner to sim racing, thank you for making these videos!
Every simracing with a bit of experience has heard about using all the track, but this demo really makes it sink in, well done. And add to this the analysis of sector 3 qualy lap comparison between Max and Fernando, this makes me want to practice car positioning much more. Thanks for coaching us on this, Dave.
A lot of people try to find the time in the setup, not realizing that it only boost the confidence to push harder. Sometimes, watching the replay to see were you put the car will be more beneficial than tweaking the car’s setup.
Amazing video Dave. Impeccable timing as I am literally just preparing to race GT4's at Spa this week. Despite the fact that I am aware of "using the whole track", often there's a lot more to use than what I realize or feel comfortable using. However, this way of finding speed seems to be one of the "easiest" to master for us non-aliens, so it's definitely one I will be focusing on a ton in practice. Thank you so much.
I can relate SO MUCH to this video. When I learn a new track, I only start doing decent times after I realise I have to be more aggressive on using the whole track near the apex. But after watching this video, I realise that I consistenly fail to also use the whole track on corner entry. I do use all the tarmac, but crucially, not the curb. This should've been obvious to me, as I have a very vivid image from Driver61's Scott saying "use all the track"... so this video has been a bit of an eye opener. Thanks a lot Dave. Beer on me if I manage to shave 2.5 seconds off any track!
Great video. Seeing is believing. For years the most suggested tip I heard for going fast was, "Watch the fast guys and take their line. Take the right line!" People might hear that, but not fully understand why. This video shows why. The right line, and using all of the track, is extremely important if you want to go fast.
Great video idea Dave! Well demonstrated with the priceless 'Active Reset' - something 'real' drivers would die for! Amazing quite how much time is gained. It does also prompt the question of knowing where exactly your tyres are.
Great advice, for sure. I would just add that using all the track is sometimes tricky, for example the use of kerbs is very track and game dependant and the best way to find out the ideal racing line is to watch and study hot laps from good drivers.
I am into this for two weeks, already my knowledge of the different tracks in Forza 4 is getting better…view from above the race car helps, then dive in behind the wheel. There is just no getting around practice laps…glad newer generations of race sims provide for practice laps…
Great instruction as always Dave. Especially as, under pressure, I drive within myself and start to make the track more narrow. I've noticed in your recent video "being hunted" you actually do the opposite and even glance walls. I need to get this mindset also somehow. Cheers 👍
Dave that was a brilliant demonstration. Thank you. It just feels like a fine line between a "track limit warning" and a "qualifying lap", the DD wheel is defo making a difference though, so I have to say "kit" plays a significant part in all of this as well.

Hi Dave. Watching this video today improved my qualifying and race pace on Mugello from a 2:00.0 to a personal best of 1:58.7 in the Porsche Cayman. My iRating thanks you. Cheers!
Thanks for posting Dave. I had no idea what a difference it makes. One tip I picked up recently is to watch the Chase view replays of my practice sessions. I am always amazed how much of the track I am not using, but was not too worried about it, until now. Great to be reminded of how much can be gained by driving more accurately and using the whole track.
Thanks Dave for the clear, helpful instruction. Very nice of you. A good example of this during a live race is that crazy video of Max Verstappen night stint during iRacing Nurburgring 24h where he gets a slower BMW from 3rd place to 1st. It doesn’t have his throttle/brake/steering input onscreen but can hear him lifting as little as possible and using every last bit of the track
100% somthing I’ve been working on a lot on tracks I feel like I’m at my limit. Practice sessions are so important especially when you have endurance racers
Great video, i am definitely guilty of not using all of the road but the explanation of sacrificial corner is amazing & something I will 100% be more aware off 👍🏻
Another great informational / tutorial video, Dave. 2.5 seconds is mental. I usually stay off the curbs and such because sometimes it seems to unsettle the car and the added risk of off track penalties. But I guess if you practice for it and make prepare yourself... well, the results speak for themselves. Thanks for putting the proof in the pudding!
The fact that you've just told me you can practice corners over and over will save me probably even more time😂😂 Just set it all up on my button box ready to go. Doing mx5 at Laguna seca and the second to last corner has been a pain and is the difference between a 1.36 and 1.37..... So tomorrow I will be just going over it until I get it sorted. My wife thinks I'm mental 😂
Great video. This highlights a variable that is often underrated. Your slower lap is still giving the feeling you use most of the track, until you realize that it actually make a big difference.
I’ve already heard that advice so many times and i thought i was using all the track yet with the explanations i realised that i wasn’t. feels like you can always push more thank!
Really well done. I’ve always known using more of the track can be beneficial, but never realized how much it can help. Will definitely be trying to focus on pushing those track limits this next season
Like others have said, we've all heard the principle of using the whole track width, but your video does a great job illustrating what it looks like in practice. I just dropped 1.5 seconds off a GT7 qualifying time after focused practice of using the whole track for 45 minutes. Thanks for the video!
Great video! Very easy to understand the explanations & the breakdowns. You can find similar videos out there & take nothing away from them. You do a good job of explaining it so everyone can learn something. Always appreciate the help you provide & keep it up! 👊
I've been a top split driver in Gran Turismo for about 3 years and I've never really thought about sacrificial corners. I typically try to take every corner at max speed, which is obviously hurting my lap times. Because of this video, I'll now try to be more strategic in how to approach a section of corners. Thanks Dave..👍
I can't help but feel slightly attacked. While the examples at the start used less track than me, that first full lap is an almost perfectly accurate representation of what I leave on the table... Great video Dave, cheers!
Great video Dave. When i watch the to splits i see them use the whole track even more in some cases. I guess it's all about Largent the off-tracks on each circuit. One of the biggest gains i found is at the bus stop at Watkins Glen where you aim for the barrier on the entry. You are faster in and out. Almost 2 seconds in that one sequence
Great video as always, Dave. I feel like you've mentioned it before but this helped me remember to explore track limits when learning a new track as well. Some tracks let you go quite a bit outside of where you'd expect the limits to end... until they don't lol. Red Bull Ring is a good example of that. Need to be more conscious of that when practicing as it's easy to forget.
Thank you! I was being told use all the track but it didn't click until you showed the side-by-side comparison. I was just using "all the track" on exits by letting the car get thrown wide from the max power it could handle and that's only half the equation. Totally get it now. I'm basically needing to widening up the corner at the beginning as well to maximize the speed all the way thru. F1 22 is finicky about track limits but I'll figure it out. hehe
Great side by sides here showing what the more serious sims allow and what it does. My first and really major sim racing I did was back with GT6, then later with FM7; the track limits with those titles are highly conservative in comparison to say ACC. Which I have to re-train my driving to take more liberty of curbing, which as you showed, makes a massive difference. Granted, not all tracks are this forgiving I'm sure, but none the less, seeing those lap times come down is so enlightening.
Being an actual race car driver (Porsche GT3R) your points are spot on. Problem for me when sim racing on Iracing is Iracing's stupid grass/gravel model. I dont dare come close to the edge fearing dropping even the slightest portion of the tires in the grass/gravel and being sent into a spin and 9 times out of 10 ending up pointing the wrong way. Iracing needs to fix this as dropping a wheel on gravel/grass doesnt automatically spin you around. Many of my races have been destroyed by dropping a wheel and being instantly sent out of contention. So now I race and keep a safety margin which of course doesnt allow me to as fast as I can.
"I'm not gonna use all of the track here and you'll see the difference" Proceeds to use the exact racing line I've been running and feeling like I was doing something good because I kept it between the ditches for once xD. I DON'T APPRECIATE BEING CALLED OUT LIKE THIS, DAVE!
Thanks Dave as ever a great video. Custom segments in iRacing are just the best! And this video goes to prove the importance of knowing the track limits!
Subbed.. you explain it so easily and you don't waffle on about stuff that's not not needed that just confuses people like most other people.. top bloke! Keep em coming
Love this video.. I race on ACC and I keep finding myself pushing my car either too much or too little and setup does slightly help but I have to be more ballsy and really push towards using all of the track... ACC can be very difficult to master imo
Very handy. I’ll study this. My impression has always been it’s mid corner speed I lose out on the really good guys, or more the precision to brake to the right speed accurately. It’s possibly my bad legs, possibly the Logitech pedals, or maybe the knob operating them. Either way - I landed on being ok with being a bit off your pace, there’s a wonderful world of drivers out there between the 1900 im at and the 2500 I think I can get to in time. As always, great content mate. Thanks.
Great video Dave. There's a chicane at Club at Silverstone, just before the last turn onto the S/F straight. The line the real drivers take is completely opposite to what eSports drivers use. The pros completely sacrifice that chicane in order to get the run into the final turn. They dive to the right then make an almost 100 degree turn, back across, almost opposite to the next turn then as they're about to drift make a total opposite lock, accelerate and have the angle to make the last corner part of the straight. Terrible description but it feels totally wrong in the sim but after watching your bit in this video on "sacrificial corners" it just makes sense. Shows the real drivers have in built big brains! 😂
Excellent video Dav very informative and something everyone can have a go at improving at getting on the power earlier and use all of the track. Going to practice now and beat my mates times 😂. More videos like this please 👍
Another belter of a vid, thanks Dave. I struggle with heavy braking on curbs so tend to avoid straddling curb and tarmac on corner entry. Im nice and aggressive on apex and exit so I just need to box off the first bit.
Great advice Dave. The problem is with newer racers who don't have direct drive wheels or decent pedals and are stuck with the beginners stuff like the Logitech G29 and also only having one smaller flat screen instead of triple screens or a single curved screen or for that matter anything larger than a 21" monitor let alone VR. Those drivers with just the more basic setup find it harder to see where the edge of the track is without going too wide and spinning it. Also with the more basic wheel and pedals you don't get the 'feel' of knowing where it all is. I am like that, no matter what I try to do with mine I can't use the force feedback to know if I am on the kerb, the grass or track. I either turn it off like I have done or the wheel is so stiff that even a 5 degree movement feels like you are trying to control a Boeing 747 powered by a Sopwith Camel engine. But it is a great instructional video for anyone looking to improve their lap times and it just shows how even doing that technique on 2 or 3 corners can gain you precious 10'ths.
Two thoughts on this: 1. It would be a great option/mod if games could show you the track limits via a 3D object (touch this “wall” and you’re off limits) to help visualize how much track is usable. Otherwise it takes a looong time to figure out and learn the true limits. 2. A list of sacrificial corners would make for a great reference.
iRacing does a pretty good job of that already. Although it isn’t a physical object that you see while driving on the track, they still have the track limits shown on a map in the rules section for each corner of the circuit. And sacrificial corners you just have to understand when to do that over time. You start to recognize patterns, for example a chicane sequence before a long straight, you’ll want to sacrifice the first corner to open up the second corner in order to get the car as straight as possible through the last corner and onto the straight. Very well shown here in the video
great video as usual Dave, if someone is a few seconds faster per lap it's not because he drove 2 or 3 corners perfectly, but because he can "put" all the corners together perfectly... and that's a great skill! Only Aliens can do this ;-)
Dave, could make a video about how to go about making setups? Every time I try messing with it, I compare it with the baseline setup and realize that I haven’t quite “bettered” the car
Great video Dave. I always struggle with this tbh. But that’s mainly due to finding the limit of my driving skill before the limits of the track itself 😂 I’m sure many will learn from this video though a lot of things to take from it 👍
I like these videos a lot! The problem for me and most beginner/intermediate drivers however is that in order to use all the track, you need a tremendous control of the car especially on the limit. Sometimes, I deliberately use less of the track because I know I am risking to go wide or even crash because my car control is just not good enough yet. It is a little bit like when track tutorials tell you you should brake at this point, but I dont have the same capability of brake control and level of smoothness in trail braking. If I brake at the same point, I am a gonner in that corner lol. Still good to know what we should work towards.
Great video Dave. I find myself lacking the confidence to have the car drive me to the track limit rather than just opening the steering and driving out myself.
Thanks for the info Dave, I didn't know that you can do the custom sectors. I know what i'm doing when I get off work. Thanks a ton, keep the great content coming.

F1 22 is finicky about track limits but I'll figure it out. hehe
Yes widen it at both ends 😁
Miss these detailed track guides, great vid Dave thankyou
Yep, the grass is lethal on iRacing 😂
"I'm not gonna use all of the track here and you'll see the difference"
Proceeds to use the exact racing line I've been running and feeling like I was doing something good because I kept it between the ditches for once xD. I DON'T APPRECIATE BEING CALLED OUT LIKE THIS, DAVE!
doing it with sectors of the tracks is such a good idea. baffling how much time is lost by not going all the way to the limit
I'm guilty of this. Thanks Dave for making a point.
Thanks Dave as ever a great video. Custom segments in iRacing are just the best! And this video goes to prove the importance of knowing the track limits!
The variables of racing fast! This is great Dave! That trail breaking video definitely changes how I race, as will this!
Subbed.. you explain it so easily and you don't waffle on about stuff that's not not needed that just confuses people like most other people.. top bloke! Keep em coming
Thank you, appreciate the kind words 👍
@@davecamyt now I have a question.. do I stick with LFM on acc or do I try I racing? I've never tried it. I know it's expensive but is it worth it?
@@jake010993 in my opinion ACC doesn't come close 👍
@@davecamyt ohh wow! It's so hard as I've seen so many people say it's not as good also. What do you prefer with I racing over acc?
Game seems amazing but I have zero idea how to set ffb settings on g29 😞
Love this video.. I race on ACC and I keep finding myself pushing my car either too much or too little and setup does slightly help but I have to be more ballsy and really push towards using all of the track... ACC can be very difficult to master imo
This was an eye-opener! Thank you Dave! Now I can return to AMS1 and become a king.
Thanks.
I'm gonna try this after work.. Thanks Dave, I'm so hooked on your content lately.. Keep up the great work
Good stuff, well put together and hits home how those tenths here and there really do add up to the difference in lap time. Cheers Mr Cam.
Great video! Even though I know some of the principals of the apex, sometimes I struggle going through the line I really want. So much to learn.
Solid video, the Sim community needed and will benefit from this tutorial.👌
Cheers mate. Always gets tricky though with off track penalties. Will definitely practice and try this more
Really good video, all new sim racers should watch, even many racers that didn't realize they were doing it wrong.👍
Great video! I was just about to sit down and work on Spa then I saw this post. Time to practice these concepts. (ACC, Porsche 992 Cup car). Cheers.
Excellent video Dav very informative and something everyone can have a go at improving at getting on the power earlier and use all of the track. Going to practice now and beat my mates times 😂. More videos like this please 👍
I’ve been having trouble with the Cayman at spa this week, so I really appreciate this video a ton!
Another belter of a vid, thanks Dave. I struggle with heavy braking on curbs so tend to avoid straddling curb and tarmac on corner entry. Im nice and aggressive on apex and exit so I just need to box off the first bit.
Thanks Coach Cam! Looks like I will be running at Spa today to try some new technique and work on racecraft. Great content!
Two thoughts on this:
Only Aliens can do this ;-)
Nice im ready, only thing left is to buy the wheel and equipment, should take me about 5 years to save up lol
Dave, could make a video about how to go about making setups? Every time I try messing with it, I compare it with the baseline setup and realize that I haven’t quite “bettered” the car
Brilliant video Dave. Would you consider doing a video on qualifying tips such as best way to bring tyres in etc?
Great video, Dave. Can't wait to get back on track and explore the limits.
Great video Dave. I always struggle with this tbh. But that’s mainly due to finding the limit of my driving skill before the limits of the track itself 😂 I’m sure many will learn from this video though a lot of things to take from it 👍
Really important tips to make you faster. Great video Dave. Your 'rough and ready' are better than my best videos... lol 😂
great to see you back to iRacing
I like these videos a lot! The problem for me and most beginner/intermediate drivers however is that in order to use all the track, you need a tremendous control of the car especially on the limit. Sometimes, I deliberately use less of the track because I know I am risking to go wide or even crash because my car control is just not good enough yet. It is a little bit like when track tutorials tell you you should brake at this point, but I dont have the same capability of brake control and level of smoothness in trail braking. If I brake at the same point, I am a gonner in that corner lol. Still good to know what we should work towards.
Beautiful demonstration. Wow. Thank you.
Wow Dave, I tried this on AC at nordschife with the Lotus 2 eleven and knocked out pb after pb!! Thanks!
Amazing, thanks for sharing 😁
Liking those earbuds Dave. Got a referral link, Wink Wink. Thanks for reminding us of the basics of driving quickly.
I'd have to check Amazon. I can't remember what they are now 😳
Great video Dave this couldn’t come at a better time as I’m currently learning the Porsche 911 round long beach. Very helpful 👍
Finally beginning to jump back into iRacing and drove the cup car around long beach for a bit last night, such a great combo
Fantastic tips and super logical way to bring the knowledge to audience
Great video Dave. I find myself lacking the confidence to have the car drive me to the track limit rather than just opening the steering and driving out myself.
Amazing video as always Dave, really good advice 👍 I’ll give that a try for sure
Thanks for the info Dave, I didn't know that you can do the custom sectors. I know what i'm doing when I get off work. Thanks a ton, keep the great content coming.
Been on iracing almost 10 years and never knew it, I kinda hope it's something they added recently.. now I got to figure out how to use it😂
Thankyou for helping me realize what I need to work on in my practice sessions
Dave for President😅!
Thank you very much, you are simply the best👍💯. Greetings from Switzerland. Sandro
I'm just really impressed you were able to do two consecutive laps at Spa without an off-track! 😅
Hacks 😁
Great video. Thank you for taking the time to make it. Really useful.
