    I have 20 years sim racing experience and 10 years in iRacing and I have to say this video is the perfect advice for new simracers and iracers. Copy Dave's mentality into all your online races and you will do well. This video is so perfect it looked scripted because each car did exactly what was expected of them. Judge the behavior of the other drivers, expect the worst, remember the names of the dangerous guys and the good clean guys. the racing only gets better from there.

    This is good advice. For me coming from racing only "arcade" racing games on Xbox I was highly inconsistent so I also had to work on that. In games like Forza you only do 3-5 laps and then move onto another circuit in a different car. It really helped my consistency to do lots of practice in a single car and making sure that I was good enough to take part in a race.

    When I was going out of Rookies, my tactic was always to start from the pits, catch up to the rest then keep a safe distance so I wouldn't get caught up in their crashes. About half way through you'll be in the top 5. Then the tactic turns to going a little bit closer to stress the guy in front to make a mistake, but avoid getting caught up in his crash. Look for where they struggle, then put pressure on them aproaching that point. Not even once did I attempt a propper overtake. Won several races doing this. But it all feels like cheating. Not a fun way to race.

    • @Khosumi
      @Khosumi 5 лет назад +8

      I wouldn't say cheating. You're definitely just taking advantage of people's egos and their emotions "I'm not going to let that guy through, I want to keep this position, I'll do anything to keep it that way" and just ends up doing a horrible mistake thinking it would work, or they just straight up do something either their car can't handle or they themselves as a driver still don't understand.

  • @pnewhook

    What Dave doesn't mention is being fast enough to stay behind others waiting for mistakes takes a tonne of practice. I watched this before subscribing to iRacing and assumed all I had to do was cruise around. I was 20 seconds down by lap 2. Still, great mentality to advancing through the licenses.

    I'm just getting into PC car racing as of Jan 2021, after having not really done any racing games since Gran Turismo 3 on the PS2, which I absolutely loved. I've never used a steering wheel nor pedals, but I do drive in real life and I ride a motorbike. So I decided to skip messing around and go straight for the Fanatec CSL Elite +PS4 bundle with the LC pedals. All thanks to a chance encounter with Forza Horizon 4. I'm sure I'll be checking out iRacing et al in no time :-) Can't wait! Just need to figure out how to set up a sofa-seating position, as I don't have room for a full cockpit, not even a folding one. Either that or the sofa will be ejected from the house haha.

    This video was brilliant, solid advice, shame that every time I got into practice, qualifying or a race session I just went for it despite the voice in my head saying "slow down, just get to the finish," but it did teach me to let the fastest guys through, then usually one or two of them crash towards the end, this happened often and allowed me to get a couple of podiums when I didn't have the raw pace for it. • @BoosiveFPV
    @BoosiveFPV 4 года назад

    Good video however. It all depends on the ability of the rookie. Have they come from racing on other sims etc. Obviously for you Dave being very experienced and then going back to rookie to demonstrate how to do it. Makes it look super easy. Like shooting fish in a barrel for you as you are much better level then those you were racing against. From a rookies perspective though. If they don't know the track properly or understand race lines, breaking points and apex's yet. They will likely start last and finish last doing this. So I guess what Im saying to the rookies is; be in control of your motor, understand racing and know the course first and foremost. For this technique to work. Dave has all of those attributes and is a great driver.

    That’s not a bad strategy to simply “hang back and avoid incidents”. But there are a few potential issues:
    1) you are able to do this because you are far quicker and more experienced than the others in this race. People trying to get outlet of rookie aren’t.
    2) There were a minimum of 5 times here where those less experienced drivers could’ve taken you out. They didn’t by pure luck, nothing else. Had you been taken out how would your strategy look?
    3) You are involved in the race, but you’ve paid for the simulation and are not racing. You’re simply gaming a system. You can keep your SR consistent the best by never entering a race, too.
    You’re doing this so you can try to race later? When? Are incidents less at higher levels? Users have studied that extensively (including Empty Box) and there’s no evidence that there are less incidents among “better” drivers.
    This is a good strategy to game a rating system. But you’re not racing, and you aren’t playing the simulation. Let’s be clear.

    Although this isn't the worst example, but i really hate this attitude of treating iRacing like a game. Yes technically it is a game, but its more than that and its not just about "leveling up". If you have joined iRacing than I assume its because you love racing and i mean LOVE racing otherwise you would just go buy Gran Turismo and play smash em' ups in every race. So if you LOVE racing than that means your goal is to come 1st, I'm not a win at all costs guy but hey I'm there to drive as fast and as hard as possible to yield the best result i can in every race. But one thing i really hate is guys that drive around at the back of the pack (Not Dave in this video) 4-5 seconds off the pace that get in the way and say "I'm just here for safety rating" the only time you should be using this method is to get out of rookies. Basically if you can't race as fast as you can without making mistakes then you don't deserve to go up the next license level, iRacing takes Practice Practice Practice and there is no substitute for that, the more you do it the faster you'll go and less mistakes you'll make taking your license to the A class and being able to keep it there and compete for wins.

      While you do have a point, the scenario is present in real road racing too. Especially in mixed class club racing like SCCA. Not all cars are prepped to the same level nor driver skill. Everything in this video applies directly to real road racing. Although a game, many like me view iRacing as a good sim to keep on skills during the off season.

      When the field can consistently avoid wrecking in the first corner of the first lap and drive with the patience of real professionals, then I will be happy to qualify mid pack or better. Otherwise I'll be happy to wait until the wreckers do their thing and then start racing once that crap has passed.
      Remember, it's not where you start the race that matters.

      No, it can be done in iracing. When you downshift without the clutch you have to rev match and blip the throttle. You'll see me doing it everytime I downshift 👍
