      No Adjustable speed setting on the belt grinder so it will do both steel at high speed and dial down to to timber at low speeds, I can turn it down even more and do leather on knife sheathes as well.

      I am always careful with all the tools, even if it doesn't look it. I find the the best compromise between speed and safety, fully safe would be clamping it down with 2 clamp or using a fence, by clamping it in place with my hand it is reasonably safe in that it can not build the momentum for a swing around (helicopter) but if the hands are not as callused as mine yes it might give you a tear if it grabs. 30 years as a tradesman working with tools I know what I can get away with with a small risk, that is why all my making videos have a disclaimer that these are for entertainment not education.

    • @DownunderFarmandForge

      I would not paint on a handle, paints tends to rub the hand and cause blistering with use.

      Which one should I use polyurethane or oil.

    • @DownunderFarmandForge
      @DownunderFarmandForge  Год назад

      @@maxgeorge5376 personally I would go oil or a wax/oil mix over polyurethane. Polyurethane sits on the surface and same issue with hand rub as a paint, plus any scratch then opens a path for moisture, which will go in a surface scratch easily but struggle to get out the same scratch after it works through the wood with capillary action. Oils and wax/oil combos tend to soak through to more depth which means a better protection over time. Stabilised timber which I use for most my handles has less of an issue than a normal piece of timber, but I still apply a finish of polish before sending each knife to the client.

    Does the pins even do anything when you don't peen them?

    • @DownunderFarmandForge
      @DownunderFarmandForge  4 месяца назад

      Still blocks lateral movement, doesn’t need to be peened for that. I prefer them un peened as you can apply them at glue up and grind the handle to shape with them in there, also peening pins is about fastest way to split wood with the burl timber I normally use

    Hi, wondering if you could tell me what kind of drill press and bit you use to make the holes for your handle. additionally, what's the least expensive way to make a good hole in the handle if one can't afford a drill press?

    • @DownunderFarmandForge
      @DownunderFarmandForge  Год назад +1

      Lol affordable isn’t really the way I do it, drill press is a must but honestly mine is pretty much the cheapest at the hardware store my bits on the other hand are pure carbide drill bits in 1/4 and 1/8 inch, that is the expensive part. Drill press is pretty much a required item as it will keep everything straight, hand drills work but any angle change will wreck the line through the scales and knife. My drill press cost about the same as 2 sets of good scales so worth the money. Cheapest drill Brit’s go masonry drill bits wit carbide tips and use a drill sharpener or if you are good a grinder to put a metal cutting angle on the top, these will get the job done, other options are lots of HSS drill bits, sharpening often, and there are a couple other better bits around as well. Carbide is the best as it will even cut hardened steel. Other than that make sure the steel is annealed, that will help with cutting and make it easier to drill
