Thanks! We have always been very close. He taught me to shoot at 4 and it's been a favorite shared past-time ever since. I'll teach my son early as well and hope he has as much joy for the sport as we do. Maybe I'll start him on some of the Black Butterfly Subsonic rounds, hahaha. Those things make me laugh every time I pull the trigger. Thanks for watching!
Big kid here too. The “serious shooters”, i.e the bench rest guys shoot furrowed brows in my direction when I go to the range and test new loads I have worked up for my .45-70. The range officers love it though when the KABOOM echoes off the bull nose roof of the range shelter. I still get a fit of giggles every time I visit with a new load to test. 500gr in S&W would be a laugh to shoot. Love your work.
Haha, that would be a fun way to wake them up on a dreary day! We have long tubes to shoot through at our local outdoor range. It's a massive boom in them too. Always turns heads, haha. Thanks so much!!
Awesome rifle.... I was looking at getting one but here in Australia were looking at around $3000 to $4000 for one, so it’s out of my budget, which is fine I get to watch you guys enjoining it. Thanks for the video and good call on the meat targets..👍
In your next video, i would love to see some static close ups of the wood and finish quality. Something quality like that deserves a few seconds of close up air time. Great video btw!
The great thing is that this is a handgun round, so putting it in a rifle already drops the recoil because of the extra weight. Then, companies make all kinds of loadings for it. There are light loads a kid could handle, all the way up to stuff that will rattle your teeth, lol.
Actually for a custom built rifle it's the going price. The price is started at the bottom cost of all custom rifle's. I will say, they are very well worth the cost. I surely love mine and it can be passed down for 5 or 6 generations.
Thanks! Things are finally getting back to normal, just hard to find tp still, lol. We’ll be having some great tests coming up with this bad boy soon. Also, we just got a scout scope mounted!
Wow, what a beautiful rifle, and that's some great shooting. I prefer to work the lever w/o the rifle leaving my shoulder. Maybe you can savor the experience longer the way you work that "leever." =)
Haha, you NEED a Model 89! Honestly, probably not much in my area. I put it in the same wheelhouse around here. Out west that would be a different story with the broader variety of big/dangerous game. One thing over the 45-70 is number of rounds in the tube for a threat. And it packs a SERIOUS punch. Also has a wide variety of cartridges as well so it can be loaded super light to SUPER heavy. I see it as a very effective close in/dangerous game rifle with great capacity.
Thanks for being the only video I have seen that would usually shoot food, but decided not too thanks to the situation. Pissed me off to see Kentucky Ballistics waste food! Especially when for awhile, we were running out here on the Kenai Peninsula. Did not help when I saw people buy whole carts full of meat.
No not at all. We were both sore/tired from work and got lazy with our actuating of the lever. Not only had we had a busy day of work, we had to haul in a 67 pound steel plate, rifle, ammo, multiple cameras, tripods, water, audio equipment, etc. It's 200 yards through the woods to our range, haha. Those trips alone will wear on you, lol.
From what I can tell, the BHA rifles are a tad notchy when new, but slick up over time. Most people don't rack the lever like they should either. The actions are designed to function with some velocity.
Unfortunately I can’t afford the Big Horn rifle but I hand loaded for a 500 S&W Mag Handi Rifle with a 400 gr cast bullet and Trail Boss powder. You are right, that 500 mag is a SWEET HEART when loaded down.
I just bought 1 that a guy bought but decided to go a different rout so it unfired but it dosnt have the piccatinny rail just the iron sights. I picked up 3 boxes of 50 of the Sierra 400 grain jsp ill load with h110 and i also got 2 boxes of 350 grain xtp hollow poi ts to load up and 200 pcs of starline brass. This rifle will be used mainly for moose and elk in heavy timber in grizzly infested country
@James Fisher, true, lol. But that gets expensive and isn't the result we are looking for as far as hunting application goes. We do plan on testing in gelatin, just has to be down the road some.
I used Jello filled pumpkins last fall. I called it non-ballistic gel. Red showed up best😆 Very dramatic too. The only downside was the buzzards wouldn't clean up after me like with pork shoulder😉
Dad and son having fun together . . . That's awesome!

The BHA looks like a lot of fun.
It really is! Just got the scout scope mounted on it and am VERY anxious to put it to work now.
Wow. That beast has thump to it!!
Letting dad do most of the recoil... How kind.... Seriously, thanks for the video.. :)
Thank You great video!
Thank you!!
Thank you guys, great review!!
Welcome & thank you!! Awesome rifle!!

Thanks so much! Big Horn Armory definitely does a great job!
Hey Terry, where did you get a price from in Oz? Are they hard to get here? Cheers mate 👍🏼
In Germany it goes for around 5000€ :( But want one ^^
Wow that is a beast sweet rifle .
Thanks! Yeah it is!
Spectacular rifle
Thanks! They do some amazing work!
In your next video, i would love to see some static close ups of the wood and finish quality. Something quality like that deserves a few seconds of close up air time. Great video btw!
We'll definitely be doing it. It really is a beautiful rifle. The black walnut is amazing for sure! Thanks for watching!!
Question about recoil, coming from someone with a 243. How much recoil does this rifle have? Im 17 and rather on the slim side.
The great thing is that this is a handgun round, so putting it in a rifle already drops the recoil because of the extra weight. Then, companies make all kinds of loadings for it. There are light loads a kid could handle, all the way up to stuff that will rattle your teeth, lol.
Like a 12 gauge shotgun shooting 3" 00Buck
I've always liked the BHA lever actions but ouch, they're expensive.
Same here. It's definitely one of my favorite looking rifles. The lines are amazing.
Actually for a custom built rifle it's the going price. The price is started at the bottom cost of all custom rifle's. I will say, they are very well worth the cost. I surely love mine and it can be passed down for 5 or 6 generations.
Thank you! Great video and a beautiful 89! How does she handle the heavier 700gr?
You're welcome & thanks so much! I didn't get a chance to shoot a 700 grain through it. Heaviest was a hot loaded 500 grain and it did extremely well.
Kudos to yall for being considerate during the meat shortage and not buying Boston butts to shoot.
Thanks! Things are finally getting back to normal, just hard to find tp still, lol. We’ll be having some great tests coming up with this bad boy soon. Also, we just got a scout scope mounted!
Was the subsonic the low velocity or the medium velocity?
Wow, what a beautiful rifle, and that's some great shooting. I prefer to work the lever w/o the rifle leaving my shoulder. Maybe you can savor the experience longer the way you work that "leever." =)
Thanks, haha. It was a little stiff, so it was easier to drop it first
Really beautiful Rifle, think some barrel porting would help.
Thanks, yeah they make some awesome guns!
Can't wait to your field tests on meat. Are you planning on doing a video hunting with this rifle? I think that would be interesting.
We are very excited to test it there as well. I would definitely love to hunt with it! We just got a scout scope in...man does it make a difference!
@@buildhuntxplore nice, I can't wait to see how rifle and scope set up looks all together, also excited about seeing that video hunt.
Im trying to talk myself into not needing this, but what would you say you’d use this for over a 45-70?
Haha, you NEED a Model 89! Honestly, probably not much in my area. I put it in the same wheelhouse around here. Out west that would be a different story with the broader variety of big/dangerous game. One thing over the 45-70 is number of rounds in the tube for a threat. And it packs a SERIOUS punch. Wolf's Prairie Outdoors to load your 45-70 up to what .500 can do in the BHA would likely bend the weaker Marlin/Remington actions
Thanks for being the only video I have seen that would usually shoot food, but decided not too thanks to the situation. Pissed me off to see Kentucky Ballistics waste food! You're welcome! Thanks for reaching out. We want to educate, but still have to be mindful of the world around us.
Simmer down Karen
Is it quite difficult to rack compared to a marlin 357?
No not at all. We were both sore/tired from work and got lazy with our actuating of the lever. Not only had we had a busy day of work, we had to haul in a 67 pound steel plate, rifle, ammo, multiple cameras, tripods, water, audio equipment, etc. It's 200 yards through the woods to our range, haha. Not bad at all and gets even easier as it breaks in.
From what I can tell, the BHA rifles are a tad notchy when new, but slick up over time. Most people don't rack the lever like they should either. The actions are designed to function with some velocity.

Awesome! I’ve looked all over for one of the Handi Rifles in 500 S&W and cant find one. Would definitely be a great little brush/truck gun!
You ever chrono these rounds
I just bought 1 that a guy bought but decided to go a different rout so it unfired but it dosnt have the piccatinny rail just the iron sights. You just have to work the action quickly. (I went to Cody Wyoming and picked up my Model 89 in person a few years ago)
Good to know! I truly enjoyed shooting it! Sadly, it was a demo for us and had to be sent back. Maybe one day I'll own one. Thanks for watching!
💪💪👌👍👍🐻
Thanks!
Terry, you need a moustache.
He had one his whole life until we were extras in “The Patriot” and they made him shave it off, lol
Get one of the 460s
Maybe one day!
Try out a 375h&h
One day! I'd love to for sure!
Wolf's Prairie Outdoors I love the vids you post in the 45/70 club we are in!
Why bring weapon down to leg just to eject the round...???
Nobody's eating calibrated ballistic gelatin.
If the meat shortage persists ....
@James Fisher, true, lol. But that gets expensive and isn't the result we are looking for as far as hunting application goes. We do plan on testing in gelatin, just has to be down the road some.
@R32R38 maybe so
I used Jello filled pumpkins last fall. I called it non-ballistic gel. Red showed up best😆 Very dramatic too. The only downside was the buzzards wouldn't clean up after me like with pork shoulder😉
Why?
I’m not quite sure I understand your question. Why what?
Doesn’t look like a smooth action
It was a little rough. Needs a few hundred rounds through it :)
They are nice but not 5000 dollars nice.
