Lag Fix - Old PC Games (Like Robin Hood: Legend of Sherwood) - DXWND - Windows 10

- Hey guys, today we're going over the DxWND fix for old PC games from the 90's/early 2000's! These are games like Robin Hood: Legend of Sherwood that seem to lag, even on really expensive, custom built PC's.
The first download link features the two files you'll pull into your steam library folder:

The second link is to the V2_02_90_build.rar of DxWND:
sourceforge.net...
In that second link, be careful what you click- make sure that the only file you click is that one. It's a good ways down the page, as it's not the newest version of DxWND.
This fix works for both Windows 10, Windows 8, and even Windows 7.

**UPDATE AS OF 01/08/2021**: Hey guys, it just came to my attention that the first link may be down. I'm not sure if it's a temporary thing, as I didn't initially create or upload those files. For now, without those two files I'm not really sure if this fix will work, the steam discussions has other options available for potential fixes that might also work, but we'll just have to wait and see. I'll keep my eye open for any fixes that also might work.
You can use the WayBack Machine to download the files, worked for me.

i love finding this olds tutorials, it helped me a lot. I really want to play this game, i played it at a real young age, now at my 23 years old i can finally play it again, thanks for the help and thanks for the memories.

To avoid the mouse flicker, I ticked "Compensate Flip emulation" under the "DirectX" tab.

OMG seriously thank you so much for this video. I've tried all the DirectX fixes and I had mouse issues with all of them, but this fixed the problem completely! Seriously, thank you. Also, I had the flickering issue that I think you were talking about and I discovered that it happens when my desktop wallpaper changed to another image so I just turned down the frequency to like every 30 minutes :)

Thank you so so much! After so much time I was finally able to play claw without lag! The fix is so good that the game runs in fast forward! Seriously though, it did speed up the game but I managed to fix it in the timing tab. Thank you again!!

It took me a while to figure out the settings that suited me but this Worked! for all those in 2018/20019 this still fully works if you do correctly! I remembred that i had this problem in the menu with the orginal game when i played on Win98, i think it just make it happen more.

Hint: in the "Main" tab go to Position and check "Keep aspect ratio" and "Desktop" (instead of x,y coordinates). This way the game gets scaled to the desktop size without being stretched.
I tried but it dosent work, the game is still in 4:3 ration.any suggestions?
the game only works in 4:3 ratio. if you have a wide screen display, you'll get black boxes on the sides. You could stretch it to the whole desktop though (by unchecking "keep aspect ratio") but then it actually looks stretched and weird. The HUD and everything was only made for 4:3 ratio back then.

Hi. I try to download the DSWin8 from the first link, but i can't do it. Did'nt recognize the direction. Could you share the link again, please? I really wanna play this piece of art and the lag is killing me!
dayumm. it seems it doesnt work anymore :( I followed the instructions closely, but after doing what was to be done, the game doesnt even start. A black screen pops up, then after 5 seconds, I'm back to the desktop. :(

TIP FOR DESPERADOS: Guys, this might work, like I tried it only once but it worked, I wasn't really expecting; you don't have to use all this stuff but just having that ddraw.dll. In this moment, game won't lag but cursor will. Plug another mouse in, while your main is still plugged; if you're using the first mouse it's going to lag, but the second one is going to work, I hope so.
Doesn't change anything for me sadly, still lagging like crazy. :(
first try to extract all downloaded files if your files are in winrar or winzip, extract them on desctop folder you made earlier, and when you are copying path of game go on three dots nest to the text box and find there your game files then put that path in. i had a problem with files location or not extracted files of dxwnd. it must be one of these two.

Get from your local e-waste recycling center an old pc decent for this era and problem solved. I got one broken and fixed it myself and I don't have to fuck with any issues caused by modern hardware incopatybility. Eventually you can buy game on gog - they games are tested and patched to work on modern hardware with no issues.
I downloaded the DXWnd file as suggested, but I just get a .rar file and can't run it like you do in the video. It just asks me what I want to open it with.

Unfortunately i tried it with ''Storm'' korean Beat em Up game and keeps start game nice speed, but during the stages, the FPS will decreasing gradually :(

Hello, i've followed the same settings as you did but, when i open the game, there is no image, just the sounds. I am using the steam version of robin hood. Is there anything i could do?

A pro tip. Dont do the mistake i did when finding the path for the game. If u use steam to find the local files for your game then u need to add the /game.exe in the end or it wont work. If u use DXWnd to add the path it does it for u. It´s easy to miss it.
hey the first download link is not working...please help me..
Unfortunately it looks like whoever initially uploaded those files has taken them down, I'm doing some digging but that appears to be the only place where they existed. I can see if I still have them and try to create a new link for them, but for now, the link's still broken.
I've done everything you said but the game (Desperados btw) hasn't that green circle...it's white.
Don't know why.
It's three days that i try everything for this game to run.

Hey got desperados (wanted dead or alive) working through this method. The only difference is that you must download a third file (along with the aqrit.cfg, ddraw.dll files) to copy/paste into the games folder - ddraw16.dll.
You can find where to download it from here:

located top right of screen.
Simply follow the rest of the instructions in this video and the circle goes green :)

Wonderful program! thank u really much! Now my game, Beasts and Bumpkins, finally runs pretty smoothly, no lagging. Ther is only a problem, the map gets a bit distorted where villagers walks or where my cursor currently is, like u see the pixels moving. Do you have any idea of how I could fix that?

Yeah grap some old pc based on PIII/Athlon XP/Duron... I brought one from e-waste broken, fixed and i have no problems with early 2000 games, because i run it on decent hardware for it.

I've done everything, checked the links and the boxes several times. I even tried some different things that could've worked...
So my question is: could it be possible that a different DxWND would work for some people? Or what is it that the DxWND program adds for us to play the game? (great sentence)

I'm not 100% sure what DXWND is doing, apart from trying to emulate the way the computer would be running for the game and giving it the files it needs that windows perhaps doesn't have anymore. My first question is if you're using the disc, because this won't work for the disc version of the game- only the steam version! After that, there's a little bit of playing around unfortunately. Everyone's computers are slightly different. -Monica

The first time I did this it worked perfectly but now I want to play the game again all the settings are gone. I have to download everything again en change all the settings, I did it the second time but now it does not work. The dot will not turn green and I have checked the settings more than 3 times.
Hey! I've got everything down. The game is running but... The characters are moving SOOOO slow! It takes 10 seconds for Robin to move just one step forward. What should I do? Fyi, I use a Dell enspiron 15, Windows 8.1

That's all right! Make sure to check your options in the software. Some of the options will change around your visuals. My best advice is to take a long look at the options in the software, as every computer is different. also make sure you're not trying to run this program with the disc version of the game- it will not work! Only the digital version of Robin hood will get this working. -Monica

This works for a few minutes on mine but when the mission goes on for longer than ten minutes it starts lagging loads again
Hello :) have all done like you, but my probleme is if i start Robin Hood while DXWND is open too, after the start of the logo and the small intros, the Screen automatically zooms very close and then nothing more happen. My Desktop has 1600x1024, and i tried this and some different formations, but its even have the same result. :(
And i use NOT the Disc Version! :D

With the dxwnd open the game will not run it crashes after 1 second but when I close dxwnd It will run but laggy like normal

I have two monitors, a 2k and a 1080p one. On the 2k monitor the game didn't work so i decided to disable the 2k one and try on the 1080p one and it's working. Maybe this is the same for you, you cand give it a shot :)
