there's something curious going on with that page about the guy who designed the new training room with the *Invincible inkling bot*, you have to admit.
Samonids are also an interesting bit. Little buddy mainly helps because he has insatiable appetite due to being separated from other samoids: either that or starve to death. Some have tossed around the idea that it was separated specifically during a grizco operation/job and I'm inclined to agree. But the question is, why is it able to eat the fuzzy ooze appetite aside? I imagine it would effect him at some point.
I don't think our Little Buddy Smallfry was around during a Grizzco op. It's said in a Sunken Scroll he got lost before he could even make it to the Spawning Grounds. And if you take a look at his design, Little Buddy's snout is much more rounder than an Enemy Smallfry and other Salmonids, which has a more sharper slant. I'd imagine Neo Agent 3 must've stumbled upon him, and they took in the little guy as a pet. Also if you go to the Squid Sisters Camp in Alterna, you can slightly hear Little Buddy sing the Calamari Inkantation. Meaning he must've heard the song at some point that he's free from being a raving fish that bonks Grizzco workers.
I think that it could be related to the fact that salmonids are vertebrates while cephalings are molluscs. The wish-absorbing crystals were made from squid and cephalings and other sea creatures became humanoid because they were exposed to the man-made crystals that absorbed the dreams of the remnants of humanity, and the fuzzy ooze is made from those crystals. I imagine that the closer you are to cephalopods the more susceptible you are to it's effects. Although the Great Zapfish has been affected so...
Other “clone like” characters in other series’ took a different turn than Lil’ Judd. Roxas and Xion from kingdom hearts. Roxas might be a sort of copy of Ventus, but him personally is different, and his memories compar3d to Ventus or Sora are his own. Xion is the same way. Despite being based around Sora’s memories of Kairi, and with a few aspects of Kairi and Sora’s personality, she made her own memories with Roxas and Axel. They realized they don’t have to be “just a copy” or “just a replica” They took their existence and instead made memories of their own, became their own person, and realized the original does not define them. Lil’ Judd might not be the same, but maybe in Splatoon 4, we might have that.
The smallfry out in the plaza also acts like cameras for Grizzco monitor and one of them points to the tableturf table. Pretty sure Lil' Judd is also a cheater, looking at my hands.
I suspect that Judd IS really basically near immortal and indestructable, which is why lil judd isn't actively trying to take Judd out. He probably has tried everything he could.
One note about Marigold: One of her aliases is Poisson Rouge. Literally French for "red fish," but also likely an allusion to the term "red herring". A prominent theory about Lil Judd is that the Lil Judd in Splatoon 3 is a clone of the original Lil Judd created by Mr. Grizz. Possibly related to some sort of experiment with Fuzzy Ooze in efforts to create new mammals?
No, a red herring is not a goldfish. Poisson rouge means goldfish. Goldfishes are red, so I don't know why they are named that in English, it makes no sense.
On an offnote, Fuzzball is an actual astronomy term: another name for a black hole. So take that as you will when ORCA describes one appearing in space..
I mean, this is all stuff I've thought about already, but maybe we should also bring up that the game's Alterna logs go out of its way to tell us about Squid Jesus. I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what it means, but it's gotta be important somehow.
Every time i talk to someone about splatoon, to give them context, i always say smth along the lines of "yeah, splatoon is a fun and colorful game where you play as a squid or an octo... and where you almost get blended by an evil telephone and you fight a giant bear in space" Now im going to have to add lil jud to the mix xd
Alright ya got me cuz you awnsered the one question i had at the start of S2...."why is lil judd never judging for me?" its cuz hes on the bad guys side! I thought they would eventually just swap every now and then but nope lil judd is evil.
A realisation; the Splatoon storylines use colour language a lot to hint at themes and characters... the next DLC is notably eerily all white and grey, just with few red accents, and is visually themed around clones, biology imagery and the human climate apocalyptic event of extreme coral bleaching. And with how colourful everything is in this world, only 3 individuals in Splatoon have that colour scheme: the mysterious fashion designer Toni Kensa, and the two Judds....
This is awesome, I had no idea Splatoon had this much lore and that it got pretty dark. Thanks for bringing our attention to this and showing us all its juicy secrets!
What if the "Staff" are Lil Judd's hired hitmen, and they are all spying on Judd. It makes SO MUCH SENSE!!! Plus, you can't find Lil Judd anywhere in the game (except for when he's doing the ink results with Judd after any battle). And the Suken Scrolls, with how Lil Judd is plotting to assassinate Judd, and the crossed out Marigold ID cards. It makes so much sense that Lil Judd is the next villain and I can't wait for the splatoon 3 DLC!!!!
Back when the second game was still kinda new, I purposed the idea of Little Judd being Mr. Grizz, the bear stuff meant to throw us off & in the third game, I was disappointed to find that he is indeed a bear but that same friend pointed out the headset to me after we've both completed the story which made me excited.
Inevitable dialogue from either the DLC or Splatoon 4: "Li'l Judd? You were behind all this?" Li'l Judd: "Mew." (Yes, it was I. My machinations lay undetected for years, for I'm a master of deception.)
@@franknova987 No, that is 100% not what they were implying. Splatoon 3 is just capping off the end of a generation for Splatoon. Splatoon 4+ will begin a whole new set of storylines and lore that are unrelated to the whole theme of "the remains of the past trying to conquer the new world." or something like that. That's my interpretationanyways. But they will be making more games. Otherwise they'd introduce a paid battlepass and not stop updates after two years. Splatoon 3 is the best selling game in Japan right now.
Splatoon 3 dlc would take an interesting turn if Lil’ Judd was the one who was evil. But I still kinda hope grizz is doing something other than being stuck in space.
They aren’t around anymore, some of the new salmonid lore kind of confirms it. The flipper floppers worship dolphins as gods but dolphins are considered ancient creatures in the lore for example. Now there was that one splatfest where Marina said her landlord was a narwhal however that sentence is not in any other translations so it was most likely NOA slipping up on localization and forgetting lore. Most don’t consider it canon
My favorite thing about Splatoon it looks all bright and cheery but all the dark lore is barely hidden under a layer of paint. Most times it is out in the open hoe humanity is dead.
So with what Splatoon 3’s building up to, its confirmed future story DLC will most likely center around Lil Judd as the main villain and center around his plans to take over the world. Which I’m definitely entirely eager to see. And much like the Octo Expansion gave us the option to play as Octolings, hopefully Splatoon 3 will add a new race of playable creatures called Salmonlings. Even if the chances are admittedly pretty slim, since while Octarians already had Octolings, Salmonids seem to be quite different in their behavior and physiology. But hey, we’ve already got the little Salmonid backing us up in Splatoon 3’s story mode, and much like the Calamari Inkantation frees the Octarians from Octavio’s control, it also seems to placate Salmonids and even transform them. So a gal can dream!
Salmonids DO have their own music and bands, along with technology. So I don't think they're incredibly far off from Inkling/Octolings in intelligence. Maybe its just the specific spawning frenzies that make them go crazy.
it isn't too farfetch'd (poképun intended😹) to think that Calamari Inkantation can also help unify the salmonids. In fact, on a random occasion, you can hear our lil' buddy singing the starting piece of Calamari Inkantation, which is a million % adorable🥰
Even though I do think lil Judd is going to be the next antagonist( likely in a future DLC)I don’t think they will die. This is because if lil Judd runs grizz co and dies Nintendo will be stuck between a rock and a hard place, if they lock people out of salmon run after beating the DLC people would be mad for obvious reasons. But if they don’t lock people out of salmon run people will be mad because it would not make sense for grizz co to operate after lil Judds death.
Yes many comments about the Staff being Goldfish, being Freshwater fish and being invasive species are right but there is also another thing. Those Goldfish are Ranchu Goldfish, Fish that only evolved through selective breeding, they are not a natural species, some even call the breeding of these Fish... well I dont know the actual english term but the literal translation from german is Torment breeding. Also, in most stories and Cartoons its always shown that Cats had it in for goldfish as a snack, so I wouldnt be surprised if Lil Judd uses the natural fear Goldsish have of cats to control them and do his bidding, if not, its lunchtime.
Plot twist: Marigold (the true one) is in reality a double agent that infiltrated Lil Judd's scheme of world domination to capture him and, in the next DLC, Agent 8, Pearl and Marina will help her to do so.
Oh I was just assuming Marigold is the cover identity for several criminals who needed to ditch their old lives and lie low for a bit. I mean, I guess it is suspicious that there's only three of them and four places that "Staff" is at. But there's lots of options for interpretation until we get the answer later!
Marigold and her clones probably work for Lil' Judd. I'm pretty sure that Splatoon 4 will get away from Inkopolis and its surroundings. With only new characters, new stories... So the DLC has to wrap everything up. And I think it will. Also Splatoon 3's solo mode was really using Splatoon 1's cast a lot. Cuttlefish, Callie and Marie, Agent 3, Octavio... So maybe the DLC will use Splatoon 2's cast. Pearl and Marina who are basically already confirmed, and Agent 4 and 8. I'm pretty sure 8 will be there but please tell me that they won't forget about 4. The only thing we know is that, unlike most Inklings, they're very academically inclined. They have a lot of room for personality and development and I hope Nintendo won't just ignore their existence in this DLC.
It's hinted that Mr. Grizz may return in a Splatoon 3 DLC, hence why he still appears to be alive in space. He could possibly have a redemption arc like DJ Octavio, trying to take back his company and repurpose it into more of a national defense operation (to protect Splatsville from the Big Run?) I had my own Splatoon story in which a small group of humans returned to earth after building a ship similar to the Polaris. They built a city out of the crashed ship and decades later have a population of a few thousand. In the present day (in Splatoon), the humans send a team of two (a man and a woman, similar to Adam and Eve) to explore the area in search of new life forms. They discovered the modern Inkling society. Later on these two humans team up with the Agents to take on an enemy that threatens both worlds. Sadly this could never happen because Splatoon always screws humans over 😔
I'm really glad you have returned to posting videos. Loved your content throughout the years & I'm excited to see what comes down the line Also happy belated bday!
I'm un-surprised that I have to bring this up, but is everyone going to just pretend like Barry never happened though? In one of your first interactions with harmony she states that Hotlantis isn't actually owned by her, but by a guy named "Barry". Now obviously, we've never seen this Barry guy but he does play a minor role that connects Lil' Judd to Mr. Grizz even further than you'd expect. No, seriously, remember how that Scientist built a stasis pod for Judd? What if since Judd made a clone of themself in their stasis pod, maybe Mr. Grizz made a clone in THEIR OWN? So... if that's the case... Why does Barry have such an enthralment with cephalopod culture like some big emoticon spamming otaku bear, While Mr. Grizz himself, the guy who he's literally made out of, is this stern, Business savvy, workaholic who just wants Humanity to rule the earth again and doesn't give a flyfish about the fact that the kids are squids now and that's how it needs to stay? Well, It's almost like Barry found his escape from the harsh realities of being Grizz's clone in engrossing himself in the new world, rather than changing things back to the way they once were, he embraced the new Sea-creature society and welcomed himself into it merrily. By that point he wasn't even thinking about Grizz, he was just enjoying being a part of the new Earth. Perhaps Mr. Grizz would have done the same had he learned to let go of the past sooner. But I guess until he falls from orbit in the next game he has plenty of time to re-think his life's decisions.
Splatoon DEFINITELY always has stuff around the corner if you go looking. Beyond even the story elements... All songs on the OST are canonical, existing tracks in universe. Written and played by the various bands. Each band usually has a blurb of lore about them too, and occasionally continuity details too. Every weapon in the game is inspired by various objects of human creation. Usually an amalgamation of concepts, but you can almost always see the comparison between splatoon weapon and real life inspirations. Seriously this game sets itself apart by how much lore and fluff info it has.
Excellent work on this theory breakdown! Lots of good evidence here that I never even noticed, like the Lil Judd pencil cup in Grizzco and LJ's increased fuzz in Splat3.
Also, Marigold is too not like most of the other npcs, she’s freshwater.
There’s freshwater band members in universe though, so I wouldn’t say that’s as bad of an anomaly
There’s more. It might be a coincidence, but both cats and goldfish are common pets, a possible allusion to a connection with the age of humans.
@@bloodorange7428 Band members are an odd case, as they seem to be way more fast and loose with the series’s design conventions.
They realized they don’t have to be “just a copy” or “just a replica”
They took their existence and instead made memories of their own, became their own person, and realized the original does not define them.
@@Lulink013 goldfish are definitely orange.
@@Lulink013 Some goldfish definitely look gold.
On an offnote, Fuzzball is an actual astronomy term: another name for a black hole. So take that as you will when ORCA describes one appearing in space..
Don't. Trust. Marigold...
Thanks for having me in this video :D ♥
I was thinking there would be expansion pack were you are a CUDDLE FISH AND THATS HOW THEY EXPOSE THE FINAL VILLAN IN GAME
If that little cat becomes the next villain in the DLC or Splatoon 4 then we have an Avengers level threat.
I hope Lil’Jud starts the next Word War
A worldwide spelling bee battle between world leaders
I mean, this is all stuff I've thought about already, but maybe we should also bring up that the game's Alterna logs go out of its way to tell us about Squid Jesus. I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what it means, but it's gotta be important somehow.
6:25 10:16 I just love the high pitched voice you used for Lil Judd
Every time i talk to someone about splatoon, to give them context, i always say smth along the lines of "yeah, splatoon is a fun and colorful game where you play as a squid or an octo... and where you almost get blended by an evil telephone and you fight a giant bear in space" Now im going to have to add lil jud to the mix xd
Hearing you talk about Splatoon is just an absolute joy and right up your alley.
I mean...Splatoon3's Alterna Logs make it pretty clear WHY the new species repeat the mistakes of humanity.
Alright ya got me cuz you awnsered the one question i had at the start of S2...."why is lil judd never judging for me?" its cuz hes on the bad guys side! I thought they would eventually just swap every now and then but nope lil judd is evil.
OH MY GOD THEY'VE BEEN WARNING US SINCE THE BEGINNING
A realisation; the Splatoon storylines use colour language a lot to hint at themes and characters... the next DLC is notably eerily all white and grey, just with few red accents, and is visually themed around clones, biology imagery and the human climate apocalyptic event of extreme coral bleaching.
And with how colourful everything is in this world, only 3 individuals in Splatoon have that colour scheme: the mysterious fashion designer Toni Kensa, and the two Judds....
I love how there's subtle hints here and there and then in tableturf Nintendo just threw all the subtleness out the window
Bonus this about marigold that I heard online: her in game files have the salmon run file extension.
Inevitable dialogue from either the DLC or Splatoon 4:
"Li'l Judd? You were behind all this?"
Li'l Judd: "Mew." (Yes, it was I. My machinations lay undetected for years, for I'm a master of deception.)
And the player character just staring like e____e bc they saw it coming
It’s just a matter of time for Splatoon 4 to release and for Lil Judd to become the big main villain
Sadly by the way the splatoon 3 direct talked about the story mode, seems this IP is going to stay as a trilogy
@@JuniperGreen162 Yeah, it'd be silly of Nintendo to end the franchise now, considering how much money it's making them.
The funny thing is. If you pay attention a lot of Nintendo games are horror games with a bright colourful aesthetic
Splatoon 3 dlc would take an interesting turn if Lil’ Judd was the one who was evil. But I still kinda hope grizz is doing something other than being stuck in space.
I had no freaking idea that this lore was even a thing!!! Yet another thing to obsess over 💕💕 Thanks for making this vid!
Only 3 mammals? What about whales, dolphins, seals and sea lions?
I like how JW uses basically the same "pffft, okay" reaction that I had at Li'l Judd's Tableturf speech
Or with the introduction of fuzzy ooze we get furries or something
Salmonids DO have their own music and bands, along with technology. So I don't think they're incredibly far off from Inkling/Octolings in intelligence. Maybe its just the specific spawning frenzies that make them go crazy.
it isn't too farfetch'd (poképun intended😹) to think that Calamari Inkantation can also help unify the salmonids. In fact, on a random occasion, you can hear our lil' buddy singing the starting piece of Calamari Inkantation, which is a million % adorable🥰
Harelings or Cuttlelings are a possibility aswell
Calamari inkantation doesn’t ‘free’ any Octarians from Octavio’s control lol
I just realized I never questioned jud existence despite him being THE ONLY FRICKN MAMMAL LEFT
Lil’ Judd is just Liquid Snake but if he was a cat.
I'm pretty confident we'll see more of this in this games dlc
Oh my god. Lil Judd. I never knew. I am keeping my eye on this cat from now on.
_"And this is the Story.... You Never Kneeeeew!"_
Plot twist: Marigold (the true one) is in reality a double agent that infiltrated Lil Judd's scheme of world domination to capture him and, in the next DLC, Agent 8, Pearl and Marina will help her to do so.
All of us mammals shall perish when I die, as I've developed enough malice inside to return back to my true form.....
in the splatoon 3 artbook there is lil judd with grizz co eyepatch on it
“Alright dude, just stop drinking the ink and keep painting the map.”
This was really interesting, love when people go deep into stuff that I and most people collect and never even look at.
Having never played Splatoon I never knew any of this. This lore is awesome!!!
0:54 Pokemon Snap but it's of Marvel Characters? I can't wait to take pictures of Spider Man!
It should be noted that the final opponent in the card game is also a clone.
It’s always the the quiet on who are most deadly… He caused the cataclysm that causes cat-astrophe!!!!
There's something about "Power Level: Stevie Griffin" that is hilarious
It's hinted that Mr. Grizz may return in a Splatoon 3 DLC, hence why he still appears to be alive in space. He could possibly have a redemption arc like DJ Octavio, trying to take back his company and repurpose it into more of a national defense operation (to protect Splatsville from the Big Run?)
I had my own Splatoon story in which a small group of humans returned to earth after building a ship similar to the Polaris.
Sadly this could never happen because Splatoon always screws humans over 😔
But he’s just a little guy 🤏
This is my new favorite emoji
I'm really glad you have returned to posting videos. Loved your content throughout the years & I'm excited to see what comes down the line
Also happy belated bday!
Very cool video, i'm really happy to learn more lore about my favorite game with subtle details that i've missed !
So adorable and scary at the same time
Why do I feel that Lil' Judd might be worst than Mr. Grizz? Heck what if Mr. Grizz was afraid of Lil Judd.
Okay so if Marigold is an experiment we could end up with fish people as a 3rd option but they wouldn't necessarily be Salmons, unless.....
This was great!! Definitely got me into trying to check out Splatoon Lore 🙏🏽🙏🏽
I still need to get Splatoon 3, so I’ll have to save this for later. But always good to see a Jwittz deep dive!
"No fast travel to tableturf" - proceeds to go the longest possible way to the tableturf area
Glad you're making vids again
I could be off, but isn't Marigold specifically the goldfish running food and drink tickets? Grizzco could just be reusing them through this.
No, iirc ALL the goldfish are using the "Marigold" alias.
Excellent work on this theory breakdown! Lots of good evidence here that I never even noticed, like the Lil Judd pencil cup in Grizzco and LJ's increased fuzz in Splat3.
Also I want to apologize for the team wipe when we queued together for Salmon Run sometime in the past month. It was cool seeing your username ingame as a decade-strong fan but I threw HARD that shift. That is, unless you don't go by JWittz ingame and it was an impostor. I can't imagine why someone would impersonate content creators in Splatoon though
The marigolds are looking very suspicious
Imagine if lil Judd isn’t Judd and he is the true villain of all time and we find out that he is pure evil in splatoon 4.
I love the splatoon lore going back coming from 2 I didn’t expect any of this mr grizz being last boss now little Judd is the new main villain, I wonder if it’s the dlc this where this will play out
JWittz: The most adorable creatures are the most evil.
Me: LIAR! Grizz is not cute!
(Also, you should totally voice Li'l Judd's translated dialogue in a Splatoon animated series)
Splatoon, huh? Nothing scary for Halloween this year?
*watches video*
Oh... OH...
I play tableturf battle, during the 3 week of no electricity in Puerto Rico do to Hurricane Fiona, that was the only thing I played during that time ._.
not sure if this is relevant or not but the fishsticks melody matches the blender (splatoon 2 dlc) melody pretty well! i feel like a connection could be made!
I think I could understand somewhat how lil Judd feels
The true villain are the servers.
NOW I GET WHY MR GRIZ WAS LABELED: the ursine anomaly #3
That's just bc his designation on Ark Polaris was "Bear #03", not bc of anything the Judds did
It still doesn't make sense that grizz co is even still in business other then capital bs
